Grace's name may be a bit of a misnomer, for graceful she is not. She wants to be a ballerina, but dancing is not her forte. "Give it up, Grace," the other girls tell her. Saddened, Grace turns to drawing--and when she does, she starts to feel better. Grace is good at drawing and the other girls love her artwork. Grace finds a way to be part of the ballet using her true talent--she paints the sets! But the indefatigable Grace also keeps dancing in this easy reader that encourages youngsters to celebrate their own special gifts.
Huh. I mean, it's great that she found something she excels at, but its kind of a bummer that she was bullied into giving up something she enjoyed but wasn't great at.

GRACE by Kate Parkinson features a young ballerina who dreams of dancing, but lacks the form and finesse to be successful.
Young Grace is told to “Give up, Grace” by her ballet classmates. Discouraged, she goes home and draws a picture of a cat finding solace in the arts. She soon realizes that she has a talent and joy for painting. Her ballet classmates applaud her drawings and she becomes the set designer for their performance. It’s unlikely she’ll become a professional designer, but she’ll continue to enjoy dancing.
The front endpapers feature a cat demonstrating the five ballet positions immediately drawing in young readers. The large-print, easy-to-read font presents sentences that are perfect of beginning readers. The attractive illustrations include a diverse group of characters with memorable facial expressions that will connect with young children.
Librarians and classroom teachers will appreciate the simple but important message. The large, simple drawings are perfect for a read-aloud experience followed by a drawing and dancing activity.

Grace does not live up to her name. While she loves ballet she's not very good at it and the other tutu-clad students are quick to point it out. This makes Grace sad. Still, it turns out she has another talent that she can use--drawing! This is a sweet book about finding where your talents lie, and not giving up things you love. The illustrations are big and bold and dance across double-page spreads. Even the end papers are fun, as the cat demonstrates the five ballet positions. This will be a hit with beginning readers.
A quick read about a young girl who wants so badly to be a good dancer and she tries so hard! It isn't too long before she realizes that she isn't very good at it and as a result she starts to paint. As she paints, she realizes that she is good at it and through that talent she is able to contribute to the dance class she left behind. And she keeps dancing. Because when you love to dance, you don't care what others think, you just realize you can't make a living out of it.
One day I want a book in which someone who is a talented artist with no interest in performing is cajoled into creating sets or costumes by their actor/dancer friends.
Instead we get fifty billion variations on the "kid who loves performing but has no talent for it, SETTLING for making sets and costumes." UGGGHH. That is not the answer to that problem!!
Such a cute book about a girl trying to find her "thing". She tried out dancing and that may not be the right fit. Find out what she does that makes her truly happy and highlights her strengths!! 4.5 stars
A short and cute story. Grace was not a good dancer which made her sad but found another talent which made her happy. Very good for beginning readers. This would also made a good storytime selection for younger preschool audiences.
Grace show readers how we each may have our own strengths, and we should stay open to opportunities! Bold illustrations in solid colors and thick black outlines bring the reader up close. Simple font and simple text invite beginner readers.
Grace isn't good at dancing, and gets told to stop, so she finds something else she is good at: drawing. The ending felt awkward, but good lesson about finding what you are good at and being okay with not being a superstar at everything. Simple, short words good for beginning readers.
