There is no theme in this book but there is a little bit of information that LeBron was homeless and now he is a billionaire. I liked this book because I really like playing basketball and I knew all of the players and how they became pros.

I love that the WNBA players are featured seamlessly with the NBA players so kids reading this won’t think The W is some foreign entity they’re not interested in.

My only issue is that 1. I found two typos and 2. Candace Parker and Sue Bird are featured twice. Would have been nice to give two different players shout-out’s with those spots. No NBA player was featured twice. The book is from 2022 and KP was the reigning women’s NCAA point scorer at that time. Also, T-Spoon had “The Shot” and Lisa Leslie had been the first to dunk in the WNBA. Just saying… We don’t need to know twice that Sue Bird won 5 Olympic golds (author note: nothing against Sue Bird. She is one of my favorite players and hosts a great podcast with her wife Megan Rapinoe).

Jack, my student I was assigned to for the reading interest book list, just completed 3rd grade and is going into 4th grade. The interest survey was easy to follow and pretty bland but I learned so much from that one piece of paper. I learned that he likes realistic as well as science fiction. Jack also enjoys fantasy which lets me know that he has a good imagination and can be creative. I also learned that Jack is a fan of basketball and funny things. Jack is very diverse because he likes scary books too. Jack also enjoys reading chapter books because hes best at "Long books reading in my head, reading extremely fast." This survey hit a lot of different points and gave a wide range of possibilities so when I saw Jack's survey, I immediately thought of basketball as a free book for him. I chose this book, "Sports Illustrated Kids Big Book of Who Basketball" because he said that he likes basketball and this book also fits under the realistic fiction genre. The next book I chose was "The Book Itch: Freedom, Truth, & Harlem Greatest Bookstore." This book would fall under the "multicultural" book. I chose this book because it is about books and I can infer that Jack loves books. I also chose this because it seemed like an adventure and Jack likes those as well. Following my free book and multicultural book, I selected "Horrible Hauntings: An Augmented Reality Collection of Ghosts and Ghouls" to be Jack's non-fiction book. I selected this book because he said that one of his favorite topics is scary. He had listed a book he liked having to do with zombies so I drew the connection that maybe he likes ghosts as well. My final book for Jack is for his award-winning book. This book is called "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library." I chose this book for Jack because it is all about solving a mystery through multiple clues. I consider this to be an adventure book so I think Jack would enjoy finding the clues and solving the mystery with the characters. Overall, I think Jack would be happy with my selections because it fits his favorite topics, genres, and he even got a book that's part of a series.
