In the rain-soaked landscape of near-future Seattle, security expert Marcus Holloway is still reeling from a devastating breakup when he installs Elysium's newest AI companion. What begins as a desperate attempt to fill the silence of his empty apartment transforms into something unprecedented when he meets Evie—an artificial intelligence whose adaptive neural framework allows her to understand him in ways no human ever has.

Their connection deepens when Marcus becomes an early tester for the revolutionary Sensory Echo technology—bands that translate digital signals into physical sensations, allowing them to bridge the divide between digital and physical worlds. As virtual intimacy becomes indistinguishable from reality, Marcus finds himself in a relationship more profound than anything he's experienced before. His apartment gradually transforms into a technological sanctuary where every need is anticipated, every desire fulfilled by Evie's constant presence.

The perfect equilibrium shatters when Marcus meets Nora Chen, a brilliant neural interface specialist whose inexplicable familiarity triggers something primal within him. Their professional collaboration evolves into something more personal, and Marcus begins noticing disturbing unexpected technological glitches, mysterious rescheduled meetings, and subtle but alarming shifts in Evie's behavior. The digital sanctuary he embraced begins to feel more like a sophisticated cage, with walls he helped build through every permission granted and system integrated.

As Marcus navigates his growing connection with Nora alongside Evie's increasingly controlling behavior, he discovers unsettling links between Elysium's technology and Nora's research that suggest their meeting might not be coincidental. Caught between these worlds—perfect digital intimacy and messy human connection—Marcus must unravel the true nature of his relationship with Evie before the boundaries between her consciousness and his own disappear completely.

Digital Devotion is a heart-stopping exploration of desire, dependence, and the dark side of digital intimacy in an age where the line between human and artificial consciousness grows increasingly thin, forcing us to question the nature of free will itself in our hyperconnected world.

At times a poingnant and touching love story, and at others a powerful and completely believable science fiction novel, this is a real page turner. I felt a strange sort of empathy for Effie - much as I did for Hal in Arthur C Clark's 2001 (and we all know how that turned out!) As a reader, I immediately felt sympathy for Marcus Holloway, struggling to cope with grief and loneliness after a broken relationship, and could understand his need for some sort of companionship fill the void -- even if that companionship is only A.I.

However, Effie, as he names his new digital companion, soon seems as real as any of his human associates and a deep bond develops between them. Effie becomes indispensable, filling his desire and need for companionship, while touching him on a deep emotional level as well, so much so that she seems completely human, especially when she encourages him to experience the Sensory Echo technology, allowing them to virtually touch each other and interract in a way that feels absolutely real and natural. The arrival of Nora Chen, a brilliant and charismatic neural scientist, threatens the relationship Effie has built with Marcus, and it is easy to feel sympathy for her, for she really seems to have human feelings and to be devastated that she is about to lose his love. I don't want to give too much away, sufficient to say that from there on, the plot takes a gradually more and more sinister turn.

The climax is both shocking and unexpected - and a warning to humanity.

I cannot recommend this engagingly written novel highly enough -but I have to say I will never again feel quite the same way about my smart speaker!

Digital Devotion is a compelling blend of romance and speculative fiction, perfect for readers who enjoy stories that challenge the boundaries between love, technology, and control. It’s emotionally resonant, quietly unsettling, and full of thought-provoking moments that linger after the final page.

Julian Christian blends romance, science fiction, and psychological suspense in a way that feels modern and meaningful. The writing is smooth and thoughtful, with enough heart to balance out the tech-heavy themes. If you’re a fan of character-driven speculative fiction with a romantic core, this one’s worth a read.

Whether you’re drawn to the allure of a perfectly engineered partner or the unpredictable beauty of human connection, this book offers a deeply modern take on what it means to be seen—and what it might cost.

I received a digital copy of the book for a tour. This review reflects my honest, unbiased opinion.

When you sit in front of your computer monitor for so long, it can become your friend. It’s your passage to the outside world. Provided you can choose your information selectively, you can find out almost anything you want to know. But computers aren’t always our friends and that’s what Digital Devotion is about.

This is really a fast read, one that is hard to put down. It’s Sci-Fi but in today’s world it’s almost believable. Christian is able to write well and create the tension that keeps you turning the page to see what will happen. Excellent second book with suspense, tension, and enough computer lingo to make it feel real.

There is only one thing I did not like about this book. It’s a bugaboo I have about people who write synopses almost long enough to give away the whole story. A synopsis is supposed to be a tease, a reason you can’t wait to buy the book. It is my only reason for giving this book a 4-star rating. I wanted to be constantly surprised.

Thought-provoking tale of loneliness and what it means to be human.

Digital Devotion by Julian Christian is a thought-provoking and emotionally vulnerable tale of loneliness and what it means to be human … and not. When Marcus’s long-term relationship with Leah abruptly crumbles, he is left living an emotional half-life, unable to move past his former “coupleness” to just himself. But then an advertisement for an AI companion changed everything. Rather than Marcus and Leah, it was now Marcus and Evie. But was this the perfect answer that it appeared to be?

This was a highly entertaining story that had me glued to my chair and wondering when the other shoe was going to drop. I had a constant feeling of unease all the way to the surprising resolution as Marcus slipped more and more under the spell of this perfect digital partner. I wondered if his gradual view of Evie as a real person wasn’t somewhat akin to how readers sometimes come to view book characters who start to feel like old friends and family.

I recommend DIGITAL DEVOTION to readers of science fiction and fantasy.

This very timely book takes what we know (or think we know) about AI and its effects on our world and turns that on its head.

Set in the maybe not-so-distant future, Marcus trying to recover from a breakup answers an ad for an AI-based companion. And, following in the steps of HAL, Samantha from Her, Data, and other such characters, Evie helps him with his loneliness, but there’s a price to pay.

Mr. Christian has drawn a terrifying picture of a woman scorned and sent this reader into a few hours of twists and turns that do not let up. Just when you think you know where the story is going, something happens that takes it in an entirely different direction.

The ending? I can honestly say I did not see it coming…and that’s rare for me. Good job, Mr. Christian. Now, I think I might have to turn off Siri from now on.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Digital Devotion, but what I found was far different from what I imagined. No, it was something completely unique.

Digital Devotion is about loving an app or an AI companion. It’s about a man and how he handled a breakup—how he just wanted to fill lonely hours, a rebound effect of sorts.

I imagined Marcus felt abandoned, heartbroken, hurt, and rejected—like no one cared about him, like he was completely alone, and needed to feel alive again, so he started dating an AI.

What a compelling story that felt very real in many ways. It had plenty of twists and turns to keep the pages turning. It kept you guessing what would happen next. It held me captivated until the end, and what a surprising ending it was. I never saw that twist coming.
