This was a quick re-read for me. I read this book when I was in sixth grade. So much has changed in my life and I certainly know more about life than I did then. I have to say that this book always stuck with me, but reading it again was an excellent idea. Looking back I realize that I didn't understand a lot of the small things in the book, like the intricacy of the relationships and even some of the references (one in particular to Jean Paul Sarte). My only criticism is that it felt as though it ended very quickly and I would have liked it to have been tied up a bit better in the end.

This is the reason I still go to book sales - I don’t think I would have come across this paperback gem otherwise since it doesn’t appear to be widely available, if at all, and certainly not as an ebook (although it deserves to be converted.) I found it for change and discovered a well-told story about a biographer who, while doing research on a local doctor, uncovers a much deeper and dangerous mystery. I plan to read more books by this author – if I can find them.

Paul Fischer comes to Oregon for six months to write a biography of a medical pioneer, but is it is not the doctor's tale which captures his attention. It's a family of three sisters whose mother was a patient that intrigues him.
