Two necromancers, a fortress, and a titan – that might not sound too complicated, but for Timmy, nothing is ever simple.
To earn his pardon and win the war against the Eternal Empire, Timmy will need to call upon every scrap of power, cunning, and determination he can muster. Whether it’s dealing with belligerent spider people, whales who’re too angry to die, or otherworldly titans with dreams of conquest, Timmy and the gang will have their work cut out for them.
The Eternal Empire might have assembled the greatest armada the world has ever seen, and they might have a seemingly endless supply of hidden naval bases, and the less said about their secret projects and ancient artifacts the better.
However, Timmy is going to teach them a very, very important lesson – never, ever mess with a Grand Necromancer who has time to plan, especially when he’s accompanied by a gang of the world’s most unconventional heroes.
I'm a reader and writer with a keen interest in psychology, history, physics, and economics. I'm especially interested in the intersection of these different areas (e.g., the psychology behind the sub-prime mortgage collapse).
In terms of fiction, I enjoy reading horror, fantasy, science fiction, Westerns, and thrillers. I believe that every genre has its good points, and I want to be able to incorporate all of these strengths into my own writing.

You know how the longer a series gets the more likely it is that new books get repetitive and the series gets more and more predictable? Not this one!! I bless the godesses of Muse who fuel this author's creativity. Far from being predictable, each page and chapter is a delight of inventiveness and humor. This latest book is much longer than the others, which means the opportunities for laughter, amazement, and admiration abound. I have so many favorite scenes in this book that to say the book is a new favorite is an understatement. First, if this is your first time learning of the author or series, do yourself a favor and start from the beginning. Second, be sure that snarky, macabre, and ironic humor are the kinds of humor you enjoy. Third, grab snacks, beverages, a comfy reading spot, and begin. Especially now, having books to immerse yourself in books that affirm the power of friendship, love, and basic consideration for your fellow salient beings feels as good as a spa day with all the extras! Enjoy!!
I have now read the complete 5 book series in L.G. Estrella’s “The Unconventional Heroes” series, finally completing the 5th book “Two Necromancers, a Fortress, and a Titan”. I found the first 4 books to be entertaining, funny at times and clever at times. The average pages in the first 4 were about 330 pages. Book #5 is a whopping 1,521 pages long and there in lies the issue: It should probably only have been 3-400 pages at most! Of the 1,521 pages, probably 1,200 were used to re-iterate and redefine each characters “magic” specialty's, restate each character's “back story” and define their current view of the current story iine and their relationship to EVERY OTHER character under the current circumstances. Every time the narrative shifts to one of the characters, the current story line is completely rehashed, the character's magic skills explained ... again ... and how their personal history shaped them. By the end of the book, the SAME DESCRIPTIONS for EACH CHARACTER WERE EXPLAINED AGAIN, and AGAIN, and AGAIN … ad-nauseam. In many cases restated using the same words and sentences used just mere pages before.
Hey. L.G.: You already told us all of that at least 100 times before .. in this book!
Bottom line: This is the only book I’ve ever read where I SKIPPED HUGE NUMBERS PAGES (some times as many as 25 to 30) AT A TIME only to find that the current focused character’s “definition” was STILL being reiterated and the plot had NOT MOVED AN INCH.
2 stars for the occasional cleverness and rare tongue in cheek humor.
Took a few years but we finally return to the world of The Unconventional Heroes, and I am so happy to be back. It was so much fun reuniting with Timmy, Katie, Old Man, Gerald, Spot and the gang, and continuing to follow their adventures as they try to gain their pardons and help win the war. This volume introduces a number of new additions to the gang, including a zombie whale and a ninja cat, but they all fit in with the established insanity of the series.
One thing I have to say I love about this series is how it tweaks expectations- in a normal fantasy setting, when confronted by a dragon, the heroes will fight it, or at the very least, try to bribe it. And Timmy does try the latter, but he also does what he does best- finds an unlikely solution to get the dragon to switch sides. Likewise, I love how, just like in the end of the previous book, the Emperor is overthinking his enemies- assuming that Timmy must've used some crazy magic to control the dragon, while dismissing the actual reason as being too far-fetched.
That being said, there were some issues, one being that given the time between this book and the previous volume (I read books 1-4 and the 2 anthologies back during the pandemic), there were certain characters mentioned whom I could not remember- downside of taking so much time between books... Similarly, this books suffers a little from Tolkienism in my view, in that chapters go on for so long with so much stuff that could conceivably have been trimmed down without changing the story as a whole. I still enjoyed the book, but there was a lot of things that could've been skipped or cut down to make the chapters shorter.
All in all though, can't wait to see where the series goes from here- although hopefully we won't have to wait as long for book six.

As ways, a fun romp with our favorite band of misfits. My two nitpicks are that that one the characters are getting a bit too much OP, and the book is a tad too long, Could have been two or three books. Otherwise, enjoyed seeing Spot and the Twerp developing further.
First time I am giving a book by LG Estrella 3 stars. I expect a much tighter novel from her. Lots of time she kept repeating the same thing especially when it came to Timmy. This book needed an editor to trim those unnecessary passages. It had its moment especially when it came to Spot. I would have loved to have more POV from the Empire’s side. If Everton lost couple of battles it would be nice too.
This is more of the same, but that isn't a bad thing. Each book in the series has been enjoyable, funny, and a good time. I may have wanted a bit more plot movement, but I'll survive. I continue to love the wide array of characters, and each book brings up new angles.
Far too much info dumping. A good third of the book could be cut. But love the characters, description and plot. Just found myself scrolling through pages of nice, but unnecessary backstory.
Two or maybe three books in one. Lots of battles and tedious philosophy, but little human interest and nothing of Timmy's castle. Only a love affair and a delightful new dragon liven things up.
This book is the longest in the series so far, and throughout the book I kept asking myself: "yes, it's nice to read about them doing this or that in the war effort for Everton against the Empire, but where is the build up for each mission, the deeper underlying motivation that makes me feel the stakes in this particular fight?"
The answer came towards the end of the book, with the big battle. It delivered, and then some. It justified the addition of yet another two individuals to Timmy's ever growing crew, it justified all those other battles we read about that hardly had me anticipating the battle because we fell right into it because every battle was a prelude to this one.
Once again, LG Estrella managed to tie all the loose ends together neatly and nicely, while also making me root for the characters in the next installment.
The subplot with James and Millie was also an unexpected delight to read.
I'm not even FINISHED with this book and I wanted to write a review.
Its 1/12/2026, since your reading this in the future I live in the USA and Renee Good was just killed by ICE. The president (may he burn in hell), kidnapped the Venezuela president, and he is making plans to invade Greenland.
It's a shit show.
BUT this book is what I need. I don't go out of my way to find "cozy books" but this book really is hitting me in the feels. A group of super kind "over 5000" level adventures go about helping people and smiting evil. I always enjoy books that break convention and the title being Unconventional Heros is exactly right, the standout characters, to me, being the super kind necromancer/his apprentice and the young dragon leaning to be kind from all the adventurers.
If you dont like sappy books, this might not be your cup of tea. But for me its just what i needed. It has brought me to tears a couple times.
Hoo boy! L.G. Estrella continues her series on this extraordinary necromancer team.
The kingdom of Everdon is in all-out war with the Empire. The Empire's desires are simple: conquer the world. Everdon was formerly part of it, but rebelled.
The dread necromancers Timmy and Katie marshall their forces, trying to enlist aid for the Empire. First they go to a merchants alliance. They're like a union of small nation states focused on commerce.
The next two possible allies are good goblins? And the spider people? They're exactly as they sound. The Empire's already got their clutches into them.
Finally, there's an all-out battle--or two--or three.
Military fantasy fans with a sense of humor will enjoy this series!
This was meant to be my Christmas–New Year treat, and at around 45 hours of audio, it absolutely delivered and it is not Christmas yet. Yes, there are some repetitive scenes and phrases, but honestly, I didn’t mind because I love the series. The characters are the real highlight. Every one of them feels fleshed out and full of heart, and the narrator once again does an amazing job bringing them to life. While there are new characters, I’ll always be closest to the OG crew. They are constantly dragged into new quests while doing everything they can to win the war against the empire. It was fun, chaotic, heartfelt, and endlessly entertaining.
I adored the audiobook, and I can’t wait for more from this series.
The series just keeps on giving. It keeps on giving and it’s all about Timmy. It’s the characters. A pull yourself up by your own boot straps kind of guy. Necromancer and Eldridge sorcerer who is one of the most well balanced, and all around decent human beings in all fiction. His pink loving little precious and totally terrifying apprentice, the young Dragon, the pyromaniac elf all were destined to horrible fates their lives, turned around just by meeting him.
This is the latest book in the series that I have been following and it obviously and hopefully isn’t the last one as it leaves you in mid air. I really enjoy these books. He’s a really good writer in that the stories are varied interesting and the characters really well drawn. I would recommend his books to anybody who likes well drawn characters lots of action and an awful lot of humour. He’s a bit like Terry Pratchett, only with ever so many more battles and lots of gory detail.
I love coming back to this wold and the characters. Avraniel is the character who stood out the most in this book for me. I loved seeing her growth and especially her bond with Spot. I remember how it was mentioned in one of the books how Spot will outlive almost everyone from the team, and I kept thinking about that. I love seeing them all together. I hope we never see anyone from the team die in any book.
This is a more serious book, but it's still a great read. Plus who couldn't resist a story with a dragon dentist, a talking cat, ninja rats, and another grand necromancer? Speaking of which, Millie joins the group. Also there is the start of a romance. And not Timmy and Vicky! More of this and I'll be giving out spoilers and who wants that?
The opening scene was a masterpiece! The book gets better and better from there! Ever wonder who laid Spot’s egg? You are about to find out! Ever wondered about the mechanics of sentient baked goods? Apparently L. G. Estrella has! Hope you have as much fun as I did!
I finally finished it, but it needed lots of time to savor. I truly enjoyed this book & can’t wait to see what happens with everyone. I cried a couple times, but I’m glad it all worked out. Great writing and world building - I love all the characters, even the dumb Emperor.
I love this series and this book was no exception! It maybe the best one yet! There were parts where I laughed out loud and was actually biting my nails at the climax. I highly recommend this whole series!!
I’m truly enjoying the growth of this author and his characters. I can’t wait for the next installment! I don’t want to give any spoilers, but it takes all of their combined efforts and intellect to get through this. Wonderful characters.
Excellent addition to the Two Necromancers series. While you can read this as a stand alone book, I do recommend you read the other books in the series as well. My one caution is this book is long, even compared to the others in the series, but taken your summer vacay and read it!
A totally enjoyable series, with so much adventure, likeable, even lovable, characters, and inventiveness, to keep the reader enthralled to the end. Highly recommended.
I love this series! And the books are a wonderful length to really enjoy but I hate reaching the end when the next one isn’t out yet. I want more, soonest! Please and thank you, LG!
This is another great book in this charming, fun, YA series. I recommend this series to anyone who has a child, particularly a boy, who says reading isn’t fun!
