I swore off a bad-boy manchild. Until I get stuck on vacation with Dominic Flores—hot, tattooed bad-boy… and a manwith a child.
We both get invited on a vacation we both desperately need, and while trapped in a beach house for a week (not to mention locked in a coat closet and stranded on a second-floor patio), I brace myself for the expected.
But…
I expect lazy, and then I get home-cooked dinners and successful businessman.
I expect slob, and then I get vacuumed carpets and a loaded dishwasher without asking.
I expect selfish in bed, and then…well, wow.
I expect deadbeat dad, and then I see elaborate French braids…and PTO President.
Each time I see him slather his daughter in SPF 50 and handle a tantrum with patience, when he helps me with the school’s budget and plans a fundraiser, and still makes me coffee just the way I like it, I wonder.
I swore off men like him. But is he the exception… or worse, the rule I was meant to break?
PS 2—and its fearless leader—get their happily ever after in Strictly Extracurricular, the sizzling finale of the Lessons in Love series. Expect a swoon-worthy single dad, his sparkly five-year-old daughter, steamy summer lovin’, BIPOC representation, and a found family that loves just as fiercely as they fight—plus enough chemistry to set the pages (or your e-reader) on fire.
This high-heat romantic comedy works as a standalone, but for the full force of all the feels, dive into the first two books in the series!
Likes: I enjoyed how much of an independent character Lina is, not afraid to speak up for what she wants, and really puts herself out there when it comes to Dom. Both she and Dom are sweet with how they look after everyone around them, and work together to learn to let loosen up and find happiness with each other. And I adored his daughter, Frankie. She's the kind of child I'd hope to have :)
Dislikes: The plot, to me, had some slower moments where I felt like I had to give myself a little mental nudge to keep reading. It would eventually pick back up again, but it took me longer to read than it typically does for a book this length because of that. And I also think it was mentioned more than enough times that Lina is a "boss-ass bitch" lol
Got a chance to read the ARC and it did not disappoint! If you've already read the other two books in this series, like I did, you'd be excited to hear this book is about our favorite side character, badass AP Lina! And if you haven't, 1. you should, and 2. pick this book up anyway.
Things I really enjoyed about this book: ✅ relatively slow burn, at least compared to other contemporary books ✅ competence kink for both characters ✅ hot 🔥🔥🔥 scenes that are also funny and intimate ✅ so much emotional maturity! A true third-act conflict that is well communicated and overcome by real character growth ✅ a super cute daughter who is realistically written ✅ delicious descriptions of Filipino food *chefs kiss*
One of my favorite aspects of this series is that it's grounded in the author's actual experience as a teacher in Brooklyn. In this book especially, it makes the characters feel real and honest.
All around, a fun read! Highly recommend, especially for fans of Roxie Noir, Rosie Danan, and Stephanie Archer.
Lina swore off men and their childish ways until she literally walked right into Dom’s arms. This FMC then accidentally finds herself on a beach vacation with a hot tattooed single Dad. Dom looks like a mandatory exception to her rule… literally and figuratively.
I loved reading this third book in the series by @anakirkshaw.author and happened to read it all during Teacher Appreciation week (main characters are all teachers and in the public school sector).
The story follows the journey of whether Dom and Lina can give in and figure out how to be together while not losing themselves … working at love while also fulfilling their other responsibilities - life, family, work and self care.
Go read the other books in this series and fall I love with this authors writing and stories !!
I've read all 3 books in this series and I think this is the best one yet. I love this series so much so when I got the ARC for Strictly Extracurricular, I stopped what I was reading and jumped on this right away. I finished it in one sitting - that's how good it was!
The book revolves around Lina, who we have seen in Books 1 and 2 and Dominic, who is Oliver's (Book 1 MMC) cousin. The beloved AP of PS2 and the most hard working teacher/admin, you can't help but root for Lina. She takes care of everybody before herself, she's kind and considerate and loves being needed and assisting others. Dominic is a single dad who has a successful business but struggles with control and making sure everything is perfect and neat. He has a sweet daughter, Frankie who frankly stole the show in the book. Lina, Dominic, and Frankie were roped into spending a week vacation to help them relax and that's how their love story starts. I love their relationship and how it was easy for all 3 of them to fall into the dynamic of being a family. I liked how it was not glamorized in this book - how Lina got introduced to Frankie, how they adjusted to being a couple but also being hard workers, and especially how they carved out time to be together. Being Filipino, I love how certain details are so on point about the culture. I adore the Flores family and really appreciate how Ana has shown the best and worst things about being part of a huge Filipino family. I relate and emphatize so much with Dominic and his struggles. I love how Lina and Dominic supported each other in ways they were needed. That is a sign of a healthy relationship.
This is one of my best reads this year. Amazing romance book but really it is more than that. It's about loving and taking care of yourself, being one with family, being open to ask for help, accepting people make mistakes and that perfection is impossible, being kind to yourself, and knowing love is worth fighting for.
Thank you so much Ana for the eARC. I cannot wait to order the physical copy so I can have it on my trophy bookshelf haha.
Acting principal and all-around competency queen Lina has just shed a one hundred eighty-five pound tattooed freeloading slug of a man and isn’t looking for another guy when she stumbles upon a gorgeous, tattooed mystery man who just happens to be the newly minted PTA president and the wildly successful father of an adorable, precocious five year old. He’s also part of a group she’s spending a week with at a luxury beach house just before school resumes for the fall.
Single father Dominic isn’t looking for a hookup when he meets his daughter’s principal, but an idyllic week at the beach bonds them in so many ways, including his little girl wrapping herself around Lina’s delicate and highly capable little finger. But how on earth can he trust another woman to be present for both him and his little girl when his track record has been terrible?
Lina and Dom are dynamite together, and their respective relationships with little Frankie are precious. Appearances by the previous couple in the series as well as the extended families make for an excellent and satisfying read.
I was generously furnished an advance reader copy by the author and booksirens, and I’m pleased to share my honest review.
A freaking round of applause for Ana Kirk Shaw 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 this book has truly made me feel a rollercoaster of emotions! I have been lucky enough to read her first book, Beyond the Bell, as an advanced reader copy and I fell in love with her writing and how opposites attract like Georgia and Oliver 😍 then I got lucky once again to be chosen to read Teach Me A Lesson as an advanced reader copy and wowwwww! Elias and Mia are the epitome of best friends to lovers trope 😍 but now, after finishing Strictly Extracurricular, I am head over heels with Dom and Lina 🥰🥰
This book truly blew my mind and made me feel like I was side by side with Dom and Lina, as if I was their shadow or something. The way these two love so freaking hard and yet are hard with themselves made me feel like I had to pull on my own hair, exasperated that these two were so blind to how they felt 😅😂 this is the story of Lina, our lovable and workaholic AP who used to be a tag team with Oliver when he was principal of PS 2. Lina who always was a boss a** b****, and took no mercy on anyone who didn’t deserve her politeness. She is literally one of a kind and no one can withstand her wrath bc she got things done!!
Dom and his little girl Frankie, ugh just to die for 🙂↕️❤️ they are the epitome of father and daughter! Dom is just trying his best to be perfect for Frankie and to never disappoint her! All he wants is for Frankie to be loved, happy and okay, at the expense of his own happiness. And boy do we see that happen between Dom and Lina! But Frankie, she’s so freaking cute and anytime anyone talks to Frankie, it’s just cuteness overload 🥰😍
This book has truly become one of my favorites of all time!! It’s full of laughter, a round family, an adorable small child who might be 5 but is actually 45 and very wise for her age and two grown adults acting like teenagers 😂 forever in love with Dom and Lina and how they always put Frankie first ❤️
I had the opportunity to be an ARC reader and wow! I didn’t want to put the book down. It was so well written and I loved the main characters. Lina is caring, loving, and a strong independent woman. Dom is so much the same (minus the woman part). It was fun to see such compatibility in the characters. You always see two different personalities being paired together but never the same. I have children of my own and little Frankie was the highlight of the story to me!! She made the story so much fun! This is a book I’d want to read again!
WOW. 😭🩷 I absolutely love this book. I can see Lina in myself. It truly was gratifying to read a book about a couple who work together to learn how to step back and enjoy life together. Such a beautiful story in an amazing series.
I’m OBSESSED with the Lessons in Love series. Ana’s writing is so good, full of humor, spice that SPICES, and all the feels, and this book was no different. I think Lina and Dom might be my most favorite yet, and their relationship progression with each other and with Frankie was absolutely perfect. 5 stars, no notes. Thanks to Ana for an eARC 💖
I'm so in love with this series and so sad to see this is the finale! Dom turned out to be the perfect match for Lina who I liked as a side character in both of the other books. The blurb:

I like all of the characters in this book but I think the best character was Frankie, whose personality explodes off the page like a glitter bomb, lol. The mental health struggles of both MCs was written well and the way they helped and supported each other was wonderful. I'm looking forward to more books by this author. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
After reading the second book in the "Lessons in Love" series, Teach Me a Lesson, I could not wait to see what the next book would be like. When I found out about the release of book three, Strictly Extracurricular, I was super excited! I was definitely not disappointed.
I could not wait to catch up with some of the staff of PS 2. I like that, even through I did not read book one, I was still able to get to know the main characters from that book in this one. I really liked getting to know Dom’s family, especially his daughter. About my only complaint is that I feel like the “disagreement” in this book should have gotten to the point that it did.
All in all, I did really enjoy this book, and I liked the ending. I also am intrigued by two new characters that were introduced in the epilogue. I’m excited to potentially get more from this “world.”
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**
Was this a hilarious romcom or handbook for how to do life?? Yes to both.
I laughed, I cried, I purposely read this book so slowly to savor it because I love this world and these characters and everything about this story. I also highlighted the absolute shit out of this book because the PARENTING ADVICE?!?! Are you kidding me?! I’m still only 2 years into parenthood and I highlighted and annotated so much of this book, this literally should be retitled as A Guidebook for Millenial First Gen Kids (specifically Filipinos) Trying To Break and Heal Generational Trauma. And Tita Gloria and Frankie are easily the best characters in this book. Oh! And the COMPETENCY PORN?? Good grief. Can there be more smut based around hot, competent men with fantastic, ahem, oral skills doing household chores please? Kxthxbai!
5 stars! I was so happy to receive an Advanced Copy Reader of Strictly Extracurricular, the 3rd book in the Lessons in Love series. I’ll drop what I’m currently reading to dive into any new book of Ana Kirk Shaw and devour it in 1-2 days, I just can’t put them down! This book is even more special because you’ve really gotten to know all the other teachers & couples from the last 2 books - but was better than imagined with the single dad vibes, badass FMC and the flirting & banter were top notch!
These two came with their own flaws, that ended up mirroring each other's. They felt a connection but weren't on the same page. We follow Lina, an assistant principal, and Dominic, the PTO president and father to a smart 5 year old. And they decide to give things "a try" but are not ready for what comes next. Is she ready to be a part of a family? Is he ready to let someone in? When you start to feel alone, family will be there for you. This book is a great representation of that. There is such great character growth between the two MCs
This was by far my favorite read this month! The writing style was beautiful and the pacing made it impossible to put down.
Lina and Dom have officially earned a spot on my list of favorite book couples. Their love story unfolds so naturally and with such heart, I felt every moment of it. Their struggles were relatable: Dom’s anxiety about being a burden and Lina’s tendency to overwork herself really hit home for me.
The spice was perfectly done, steamy but never over the top, and the humor had me giggling more than once. Honestly, I was kicking my feet and smiling like a lovesick fool the whole time.
Sweet, funny, emotional, and so relatable. A solid 5/5 stars!
Perfection! The characters were fantastic, they had believable backstories and were super relatable. The plot was great, the storyline wasn't exaggerated or boring and the spice was spicy! Highly recommend giving this dual POV a read you won't be disappointed.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this series with just the right amount of deadpan humour, delicious spice, and down to earth characters. I will miss this little Brooklyn PS 2 universe and look forward to what Ana writes next!
Also, Lauryn Hill’s chronic lateness is called out in a very real way, both hilarious and nostalgic.
4.5⭐ Wow this book was so much more than I was expecting!! The romance was top tier and the spice was hot ASF but also the look at generational trauma and learning to have different and healthy relationships than those you grew up watching. And Frankie was such a damn cutie!
This is by far my favorite out of the series! (though I did enjoy them all) I love Ana Kirk Shaw's writing style, it consistently has me laughing out loud. The inner monologue of the characters is always hilarious. I loved Lina, Dom and Frankie's story and I look forward to reading anything else Ana writes!
I am gnawing at the bars of my enclosure for this couple 🥵 the chemistry, the culture, the lessons in letting go and putting yourself first - SOOO good!
I loved this series from Ana Kirk Shaw! I was on her ARC team for all three books in this series. Each one was so much fun, and they just kept getting better. Strictly Extracurricular was no exception.
Lina was such a fun FMC. She is a badass woman who deserves to have someone worship her. Enter Dom. Dom is a single dad who happens to be the PTO president at the school where Lina is the VP. Do I need to say more?? This book features some of my favorite tropes such as forced proximity, amazing banter, and oh yea.. single dad.
I loved so much how both MCs complemented each other. They both understood the other on such a fundamental that they knew exactly what the other person needed. & I loved how much Lina was willing to jump head first into the mother role.
The third book in this series did not disappoint and left me with such a full heart and feeling so happy.
Dominic tries his hardest to fight his feelings for Lina. Lina wants to avoid anything with Dom but can’t help wanting him (and often letting him know just how much 😉) Throw his adorable and funny 5 year old daughter Frankie into the mix and you can’t help but root for all of them to find their joy.
With lots of family, his cousin Oliver (book 1) and other familiar faces it’s a joy to hang with the gang from PS2 again. You’ll be happy to spend your time with them all. 🩷
thank you to Ana Kirk Shaw for allowing me to read this as an ARC!
This book was so sweet, even during the spice, it is sweet! One giant found family who all love really big❤️ Lina is the kind of woman who is overworked and gives her all to anyone and anything in her life. Dom is a hardworking, extremely independent single dad to the wonderful Frankie. he thinks that he should do every single thing on his own and never take a step back from life. Together, they work on finding out ways to take a step back and put themselves first!!!
Actual Rating: 4.5 Spice: 3 (Nothing crazy but scenes written very well)
Recommend to: someone looking for a multi-cultural contemporary romance with build up, spice and mature characters.
Tropes: Single dad Multi-cultural Rep (Filipino & Dominican) Bipoc Rep Boss Bitch FMC Competency Kink Generational Trauma Vacation get away Forced Proximity Neurotic MMC Principal FMC X PTO Parent MMC sex confidant FMC
Upfront Need to know: This is book 3 in a stand alone interconnected series. I did not read book 1 & 2. That being said, this book works well as a stand alone, up until the epilogue. That was definitely written for fans of the entire series but still enjoyed it. Not reading the previous books does not take away from your experience.
The writing style made this book easy to read and feel real. I ate this up with a spoon. Could not put the book down, literally woke up with my kindle still in my hands because I wanted to keep reading past my bedtime. I love good multicultural rep in my books and this did not disappoint. We had the food, the generational trauma, the langue, the vibes. I want to give the author a round of applause for actually writing mature adults that approach and handle things like grown ups. Any drama that happens results in character growth and not just for the sake of adding drama. The FMC isn't plus size but there are references to her soft stomach so I would describe her as Midsize. Plus we get a little "my ass is looking good" moment after the FMC describes some new weight gain. She is a problem solving, take care of everything and everyone kind of lady, even at the expense of her wellbeing. The MMC is a single dad, working with abandonment issues, generational and cultural trauma. He is also a let me take care of everything myself, I don't need help and I need to be the best at everything I'm doing kind of guy.
The build up to their romance was not slow burn but filled with tension of will they wont day and when will day. It was edging hook up. Thankfully the FMC kept things fun and flirty. It also allowed for their connection to be clear before they got physical. That leads me to the spice. Once our MCs got started it was fire! I loved the way the scenes are written. There is lite kinks mixed in there and shows a healthy example of a couple exploring each others likes in the bedroom. The MMC was top shelf worshiping his lady. Our FMC was confident in the bedroom and not shy at all.
The MMC is a single dad so we do have a child in the mix. Usually, children that have plot roles in romance stories feel not real. This time, for the most part it felt like a real child raised by a single parent. Personally, I think at times the little girls comes off 1st grade not Kindergarten age but her behavior and clothing choices scream Kinder. She was cute, funny and added a good layer to the story overall.
I can probably go on longer on how much I loved this story but then I would be giving spoilers. So go read the book so we can talk about it lol.
This book has made me a fan of this author. I will be reading the previous books in this series and likely anything else put out by this author. Thank you for the opportunity to ARC read this book.
If you want more plot than spice in your single parent romance reads, Ana Kirk Shaw needs to be on your radar.
This is my first ever ARC and all opinions are my own. When I was having a hard time picking out my next read, this showed up in my inbox and I was ecstatic to start!! Even better...it's single parent romance.
Why single parent romance always hits hard for me: - You get to see the parent being the absolute best, while still perfectly flawed (unrelated: I am autistic and parenting is my special interest). - You get to see how the love interest interacts with the child/children—and how the single parent falls for them because of it. In other romances, the falling-in-love part can be vague, but here, you see when the parent gets charmed. - Both love interests learn to be friends first. They always have the kid in mind, and it leads to mature conversations about hard things. There’s more at stake, which makes the emotional payoff hit deeper.
This book nailed all three!! Especially the emotional payoff part because GOD I felt it—my heartstrings being tugged that I felt like I had to throw my kindle across the room (in a good way!) because I couldn’t handle it as it was too much.
Lina’s unfiltered comments are hilarious, and I love that Dom isn’t put off by them—in fact, it draws him in. Dom is soft and patient with both his daughter Frankie and with Lina, and that kind of gentleness? Yeah, it’s doing things to me. Also: hello, competency kink. The bar is in hell, but Shaw makes DILF Dom look extra hot. Even his neurotic tendencies are charming lol.
I haven’t read Shaw’s other two books in the series, but the title Lessons in Love is a perfect fit here. Dom and Lina (assistant principal!) both have their own arcs of learning to let go, be a little selfish, and accept help when it’s offered. The character development feels believable, given the timeframe, and it’s done well for both characters.
Bonus: As someone Southeast Asian, it meant a lot to see a Filipino family dynamic in the book. I haven’t read many books with BIPOC characters, so this made the story even more special—and one of my favourite parts overall.
*ARC review with slight spoilers* Can I just say how much I love this series! This book is not exception to that.
Lina is someone who feels like she needs to do everything for everyone else, even if she does not get paid for all the principal work she is doing without being the principal. She stays at school until late and in the beginning, never does things for herself.
Dom is a single dad who does not ask for help. He feels guilty about ever leaving his daughter Frankie, even if they both need it at times. He is trying gentle parenting will also knowing that sometimes it is the stupidest thing in the world.
They both decide to go on a vacation to Dom’s family beach house; neither of them knowing that the other was going to be there. While staying in the guest house, they learn to find themselves and pull back on what they think they need to be doing, taking breaks and letting others help when normally they won’t. It is here that they let their attraction to one another, physical and emotional, and become more than friends, entering into a relationship. When out of vacation mode and back into the real world they go through challenges, learn each others bodies (in some of the best sex scenes I have ever read), and learn to navigate a relationship with a 5 year old child involved. I will not spoil the ending but believe me, it is heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time! Yes, tears were shed.
I would be remiss if I do not mention the edibles scene because it is the BEST SCENE EVER!! Please do yourself a favor and pay full attention to it because so much happens and I love it so much.
I appreciate how Ana Kirk Shaw included Georgia and Oliver as well as Mia and Elias. This group is some of my favorite protagonists of all!
I also need to give some appreciation for Frankie! I love this smart, sassy, and glittering five year old with all my heart and she deserves the world.
✨single parent ✨forced proximity ✨found family ✨summer love ✨competency kink
- Oh my goodness I loved reading the novel about Dominic and Lina. First of all Lina is such a great and considerate character, that made sure everyone around her orbit was okay. Like her passion for helping others resonated so much with my personal traits. ✨ Now Dominic a devoted good single dad to his daughter. Dominic is a person that is a business man, who wants to control much, and wants things according to plan and up to his neat picked ways and standards.
- Now transition to the plot line of the vacation to relax what a time when the love story stars. Seeing that chemistry built between Lina and Dominic which is not just the physical attraction aspect but wanting to be with eachother and taking that leap of love! 💋 Not only was the start of their romance the most engaging moments of the novel, U loved the close family bonding the three had Frankie, Lina, Dominic all being together was such a wholesome moments. When Lena came introduced, it was such a trust and comfort approach that was a beautiful dynamic potrayed 🫂!
- I loved how everyone spent time with each other and valued maintaining the personal relationships it was so important especially when a person has children, family and friends that you’re introducing. I loved that Lina and Dom were supportive systems for each other and over time certain personal aspects were more clear over time! Such a healthy relationship and family dynamic being built after such a vacation. I loved reading this novel and I recommend everyone to read!
Thank you so much for allowing me to receive an early copy in exchange for an honest review. This novel highlighted representation, a story full of characters that impact and make a difference. This novel was not only a romance novel but also highlighted family, connection, and a world full of new experiences.
