Robert Ervin Howard was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction. Howard wrote "over three-hundred stories and seven-hundred poems of raw power and unbridled emotion" and is especially noted for his memorable depictions of "a sombre universe of swashbuckling adventure and darkling horror."
He is well known for having created—in the pages of the legendary Depression-era pulp magazine Weird Tales—the character Conan the Cimmerian, a.k.a. Conan the Barbarian, a literary icon whose pop-culture imprint can only be compared to such icons as Tarzan of the Apes, Count Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and James Bond.

I got Heroes of Bear Creek & promptly sat down & read the two stories I've never read & couldn't find elsewhere; "Mayhem & Taxes" & "A Elkins Never Surrenders". According to HowardWorks.com, this is one of the most expensive of Howard's books out there. I believe it contains all his humorous western stories. Not all are about Breckenridge Elkins, but most are.
This book is actually 3 books: A Gent From Bear Creek which contains "Striped Shirts and Busted Hearts" (new) "Mountain Man" "Meet Cap'n Kidd" (new) "Guns of the Mountains" "A Gent from Bear Creek" "The Feud Buster" "The Road to Bear Creek" "The Scalp Hunter" "Cupid from Bear Creek" "The Haunted Mountain" "Educate or Bust" (new) "War on Bear Creek" "When Bear Creek Came to Chawed Ear" (new). (new) = stories written for the novelization, not previously sold. The unmarked stories were edited somewhat to fit into the story line. I've read both versions of some & the changes were pretty minor.
The Pride of Bear Creek which has "The Riot at Cougar Paw" "Pilgrims to the Pecos" "Gents on the Rampage" "The Apache Mountain War" "Pistol Politics" "The Conquerin' Hero of the Humbolts" "A Ring-tailed Tornado"
Mayhem on Bear Creek "No Cowherders Wanted" "Mayhem and Taxes" "Evil Deeds at Red Cougar" "Sharp's Gun Serenade" "The Peaceful Pilgrim" "While Smoke Rolled" "A Elkins Never Surrenders"
It was fun to read "Mayhem & Taxes" & "A Elkins Never Surrenders", but certainly wasn't worth spending a lot of money. Neither was one of the better Elkins stories, but both were fun. The first was very short - about 5 pages. The second was a bit longer, but still pretty short & I didn't care for it as much. Since both are out of copyright, I'm going to try to get around to typing them up & sharing them out. Don't hold your breath, though. ;-)
I'm not a fan of westerns, but this was good. The author is long dead, but I can't help but wonder why he took two stories from earlier in the book and rewrote them for later on. I must admit that sort of drove me nuts.
