Judith Kohnen's book One Chance, One Moment (The Mandy Story Book 1) is her debut novel. This book was inspired by Barry Manilow's song Mandy. This story is one of lots of humor, romance, respect, hope, jealousy, self-pity, vengeance and of course LOVE!!! Once you begin reading it you will not be able to put it down until you finish. You will be turning page after page after page until the end. This is such a must read and believe me you will not go wrong with it. The two most important messages I found were we all have power to make a difference in someone's life and Love and and will conquer all. This is such a romantic story but yet it's funny and suspenseful too. I gave it 5 stars but it deserves so many more. I highly recommend it to everyone and I am waiting anxiously for the sequel to find out more about Garry and Amanda's relationship. I look for more from Judith Kohnen.
This is a lovely story, Judith Kohnen has such an easy writing style, and I was drawn in straight away. When famous Singer/Songwriter Garry Danzlo is badly injured in a car accident, he shuts himself off from the outside world, only his Sister & Brother-in-Law, his Girlfriend & his trusty butler are allowed to see him. That is until his Sister hires a Holistic Nurse to rehabilitate him. Amanda is recently widowed & desperate to adopt a young boy Robbie, the job offer is too good to pass up. Garry is dead set on getting rid of Mandy, but her fun loving & sweet nature wins him over, & we get to enjoy a very funny & sweet story & at times very emotional so make sure you have a box of tissues close by. One Chance One Moment is an absolutely entertaining story.
Garry owns a mansion in Bel Air, California. His father ran away from the family when he was ten. Johnathan asked Garry for his forgiveness but Garry wouldn't have it, he betrayed him many times. His voice played in Garry's head like a broken record. Johnathan took his own life, Garry buried his father in linen shrouds and the bloodstained garments found on his body, for blood of the individual is considered by Jewish law to be part of the body and must be buried with him. As suicide, he was not to be honored or receive public recognition. He took off from his mansion he was running away and trying to clear his head. He got into a car accident, four months later, the entire right side of his body was useless. He is adamant that he doesn't need a nurse, all the nurses and therapists that Melissa and Dan brought in were either fired by Garry or they left on their own. Amanda was given the job to help Garry heal . She would get paid 50,000 dollars and she would be paid another 50,000 dollars if she could get him back up on his feet in four weeks. Amanda has advanced education in holistic nursing. Does Amanda get Garry to walk again? Garry is Jewish, from Brooklyn, he is a pianist, composer and producer of his own music and he surprisingly became a singer. After his accident he became moody, and mean and very stubborn. Amanda wants to adopt Robbie, she is a registered nurse and she is 32 years old. She is also a widow and she was a suspect in her husbands murder. Melissa is Garry's sister, she is tired of Daphne. She likes Amanda and she is 29 years old. Dan is Melissa's husband and Garry's CEO and manager. Nicolas is Garry's butler and friend. Daphne is Garry's girlfriend of more then a year, she is also a marketing genius. Robbie is 8 and in a wheelchair and wants Amanda to adopt him. He is a very nice little boy. Miriam is Garry's mother, she wants Garry to stick with the Jewish ways. She tells Robbie to call her Bube. I love this book, I couldn't put it down. I loved how well developed the characters are very well developed. I didn't want this book to end, this is the first book in the series The Mandy Story. I loved this authors style of writing. This is my first book by Judith Kohnen and it most definitely will not be my last. Judith you are an amazing author and I highly recommend this book.
A VERY UNIQUE AND ENJOYABLE READ. The author has a unique style of writing that comes through in witty humor, touching moments, mystery, and great character development. You easily connect with the characters who are brought together and face challenges in accepting “what is” in their current life situation, individually, and in their patient/nurse relationship. I truly enjoyed the humor and wit interwoven throughout the main character relationships. Mysterious characters leave you in moments of suspense; you naturally want to know more about them and the motivations behind their behavior. There were moments when I laughed, had tears, and I didn’t want to put the book down. FUN, WITTY, CRAZY, and SWEET.
This book is just awesome. I don't give many books 5stars. This deserves more than that. I felt as if I was holding my breathe the whole time. This was one of the best books I've read in a while. I think I cried at every other chapter, and found myself laughing out loud just as much. These are one of those books that make you want to reread it as soon as you finish. Its hard for me to decide where to start talking about this book, so I'll just say you Must Read this book.
Famous celebrity singer, Garry Danzlo, is distraught over his father’s suicide. His attempt to clear his head by going for a drive results in a devastating car crash that leaves him maimed and bedridden. His sister, Melissa, soon realizes Garry’s trusted employee, Nicholas, is overburdened with the task of taking care of Garry by himself. And, Garry’s spoiled girlfriend, Daphne, is no help. She’s more interested in spending Garry’s money by jetting all over the country and sleeping with other men. She clearly finds Garry’s new condition repugnant, but she’s not about to let go of her only source of income.
Melissa is a concerned and devoted sister. She decides to make one more attempt at finding a nurse for Garry and she chooses sweet, but emotionally damaged Amanda. Amanda needs this job in order to adopt wheelchair-bound Robbie. There’s just a couple of things Amanda must do in order to remain in the Danzlo house as Garry’s nurse - she must dress as bizarre and dowdy as possible to avoid setting off Daphne’s jealousy and she must pretend to be Jewish.
Practically penniless, because of her murdered husband’s gambling debts, Amanda endures taunts and cruel treatment from a bitter Garry. But, true to any good romance novel, the unlikely pair soon find themselves strangely attracted to one another. A series of problems, obstacles and romantic snags ensue.
I found there were several storylines included in One Chance, One Moment. Some were intertwining and some were somewhat disconnected from one another. This certainly compels readers to stay on their toes while following the story. Some of what conniving Daphne did in her ongoing attempt to get rid of Amanda was downright criminal, yet she was never held accountable. I would like to have seen Amanda fight a little more, instead of resorting to crying as much as she did. I’d like to see her character become more assertive in Book Two. In addition. I’m hoping some of the unresolved issues will be addressed in upcoming books - When does Daphne get what’s coming to her? How will the religious differences be addressed? Will Amanda be put in danger due to her husband’s illegal gambling debts?
If you enjoy a good love story, packed with interesting characters, people you’ll love to hate, and just the right amount of sex, you’ll enjoy One Chance, One Moment. I’m awaiting Judith Kohnen’s follow-up novel!
eBook Review Gal received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
One Chance One Moment by Judith Kohnen is a phenomenal read. This is Ms. Kohnen’s debut novel yet once you read it, you could see that she has an affinity for writing. This was so masterfully written that the characters came alive for me, it was like watching a movie rather than simply reading a book. Every character was important and had strong personalities. This was an emotional roller coaster ride for me starting from the moment Robbie was introduced till the end of the book. There is so much emotion in this book that you better make sure you have a box of tissue handy.
Garry is a broken man who lost his will to live following the suicide of his father, while Amanda is a widow who took this job so that she could adopt an 8 year old boy and give him a loving home. Amanda (Mandy) is a fun-loving nurse and holistic healer hired by Garry’s sister Melissa because she believes that Amanda is the answer to her prayers. Can Amanda convince Garry that there is so much yet to live for, and adopt a beautiful child? Or is their relationship doomed from the start?
WARNING this is not a TRASHY novel, so if that is what you are looking for then this is not the book for you. This book has love triangles, murder and intrigue galore! Intrigued yet? I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!
Masterpiece 5 Stars! Garry Danzlo is living the good life. A car accident destroys his world. Now bedridden, Garry can only see life with no hope; he is consumed with bitterness and depression. As a last resort, Mandy, a holistic nurse, is hired. Garry’s finance, Daphne, (evil to the core) wants her gone. As the story grows, the plot thickens and a deeply emotional journey for many begins. “One Chance, One Moment” is a masterpiece of a love story. This engaging multilayered tale is filled with well defined, colorful characters. Sensitive subjects are addressed, harsh realities are dealt with and a softer side to life is explored. I laughed, I cried and I wanted to spit in a particular persons eye (Daphne). There is nothing better than reading a solid, moving romance novel. Kudos to you, Judith Kohnen.,I’m giving you the highest honor a reviewer can give…a 5 Star rating! I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book. I loved it! I found it to be very unique from the other romance books I’ve read. It was filled with loads of surprises. I loved the way each chapter ended, either on a funny note or in some thrilling way that kept me wanting to turn the pages. This book is heartwarming, funny, and so very touching that it had me tearing up and laughing many times. I loved the way the characters were able to grow and share together. I even loved the secondary characters. Garry is a bit of a beast, but you learn to love him in a very special way. Best of all, this book actually opened my eyes to some things I am dealing with in my own life right now. I feel I have a better understanding of what I really need to do. I’m keeping this book. It was definitely a worthwhile read.
OMG! I loved this book! It was sooo funny and sooo emotionally moving that I was crying one minute and laughing the next. I had a hard time putting it down (but I had to tend to my boys!). Couldn’t wait for them to go to bed so I could read some more. I’m not a fast reader, but I finished this book in two days. This author had a unique style to her writing. I really liked it. I loved that she had multiple viewpoints. It helped me to understand some of the other characters. Eddie was so mysterious, and though he was not a good guy, somehow I loved him. And Daphne, the girlfriend was so like somebody else I know, only I think Daphne is surely a bit more devious. I’m thinking she is surely in the book two, which I can’t wait to read. I’m looking forward to the sequel to this book!
One Chance, One Moment by Judith Kohnen is outstanding! I don't think there is a single Barry Manilow fan out there that hasn't made up a story in their own head about the hit song, Mandy. One Chance, One Moment is Kohnen's version of her own story. Although Garry is a rock star needing rehabilitation after a near tragic car accident, he in no way reflects the personality of Barry Manilow. The story line is all about the song, and the possibilities that exist. The characters are strong and consistent and the story line is fascinating. I was totally enveloped and cannot wait to see where Kohnen takes me next. She is a very talented author with deep insight into hope and courage. I completely loved Amanda's story!
This book took me a little by surprise. I expected a good romantic read, what I didn't expect was the humor. I loved it. Those who know me, know I love to laugh and I love when books take me by surprise. This writing style was very smooth. This is the first in a three book series and I can't wait for the rest. I am usually not a huge fan of the musician romance stories, but this book didn't feel like your typical music romance. It was very well written.
I loved the characters. I was also pleasantly surprised at how many supporting characters I fell in love with. Don't get me wrong, I loved Garry and Mandy, but the sister was hilarious. The butler was equally as fun to read about. A great story all around. I can't wait to see what comes next.
I, as a male, am not romance reader by my nature but intrigued by this book being based on the song Mandy by Barry Manilow, who I unashamedly admit is one of my favourite entertainers, thoroughly enjoyed this book.
I will admit that I kept pulling for Mandy and Garry to get together and wanted harm to come to anyone and everyone who were keeping them apart.
It is a great read for anyone who enjoys a bit of mystery, romance, deceit, love. This book has it all.
I would recommend this book to everyone, even those men who are "too macho" to read girl lit.
I hoping the way that it ended will allow for a sequel to follow. I want to know more.
This was a great book--a good one to read when you're looking to escape for a bit. I enjoyed the characters and their interactions--felt like it had a good flow and it kept me engaged--a good mix of comedic moments interspersed with touching, heartfelt moments and romance. I was intrigued by the idea of a story behind the song. I love "Mandy" --an oldie, but a goodie! :) Would definitely recommend...
This book was AMAZING! I was absolutely consumed by it and couldn't put it down until I finished! It made me laugh with it's quirky, witty humor as well as cry with its tender, romantic moments. It inspires one to take chances in life and love and to move forward with hope and faith. It's definitely a MUST READ!
First.. I must say I HATE the cover. Sorry. If they reissued it with a different cover I would happily hand over my money to buy a copy.
Second.. I freaking love this book! I won the second book in the series in a contest and the author asked if I had read the first book. When I said I hadn't she kindly sent me the first on kindle. I totally devoured this book. I'm not a contemporary romance reader. Okay, well here and there but its not my preferred genre. This book, though, was off the hook. I cried. I laughed. I fell in love. I sang along (which my kids disapproved of). I almost threw my kindle at the wall during the last 5% of this book. I thought it was going to be a cliff hanger but thank god it wasn't. The main characters are so full of life and spirit. Mandy is amazing. Garry is so sweet. The mom is awful but you can still relate to her and I suspect there will be some character growth from her sooner or later. There was even a bit of mystery surrounding a side character that I hope comes up in one of the next books. I want to hear about Eddie some more. ;) Hopefully he is the man hinted at in the second book.
Seriously ignore the cover and read this for an emotional rollercoaster. So worth it.
I grew up being intrigued by the romance novel genre as that was all my mother would read on her free time. I was intrigued to pick up this book by a friend of mine who told me about the author. This book reminded me of the whirlwind of feelings I got from the movie Amelie.. always wondering what was going to happen next and captivated by the authors imagination. I felt like each character I could relate to in the different aspects I carry within myself which made me reflect a lot. I could especially relate to the stories main character Amanda and her sense of hiding yet embracing her true nature. I loved how thought out the book was with each character and felt that there were a lot of elements to them that kept me interested in reading more. It provoked emotion, thought and desire all at once. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a great read.. you will not be bored!
This novel has all the drama you crave for an adult romance novel. The personalities of the characters are so dynamic you won't want to put it down. A great 'beach read' this summer! Enjoy!
I actually started reading this a few books after I read Return to Me by Kelly Moran, and the plot was somewhat similar. They both involved the main guy character being bedridden (and essentially depressed) and the main girl character having to be their nurse, but they were both so different in many ways and so good!
This book is filled with many plot twists and is essentially suspenseful. It makes you want to keep turning the pages because not only is it so sweet and intriguing to watch Mandy and Garry's relationship develop, but there are many storms brewing that you want to closely observe as well...
Mandy and Garry were SO cute. I really feel like the story is mainly Garry's, though. I say this because Kohnen did an awesome job in developing Garry's character. He's somewhat arrogant and like your stereotypical celebrity, but after his incident he becomes reserved and he is... essentially childish. Mandy comes into the picture as the rock, the one who is there to make Garry realize things and help him find himself. After reading the book, you definitely see several changes in Garry. He is sooo sweet...
Kohnen also balances the good with the bad. There are definitely characters that are "evil", and you can't help but hate them with a passion. Kohnen's play of words throughout the book makes you have strong urges to jump into the world of the book, set things straight, and give some characters a piece of your mind. The reader is pretty engaged with the story, in my opinion.
Overall, I loved this book. There were moments where I wanted to cry and/or yell at someone, and there were moments where I laughed and was filled with plenty of warmth and love. There was a balance of elements in the story and they were powerful. They had an impact on my emotions, thoughts, and overall reading experience.
Kohnen's words were, in a sense, poetic and I felt so "divine" while reading. It made me want to sit up straight and talk all proper and fancy, haha!
I TRULY enjoyed this book and I STILL can't get over it (it has been about 5 days)! I definitely recommend this book, and I canNOT wait for book 2!
The idea that intrigued me to read this book was the healing power of energy. I had a feeling it would teach me about this concept along with the sweet and sour banter between our protagonists since one will act as a pig headed patient and the other his nurse. In the beginning I was so excited to read this book but the more I got into the book the more I started to get disappointed. I so wanted to like this book but alas, it just wore me down. I felt my hopes go up when Mandy would unleash her sense of humor filled tongue and die down when author would explain too much through metaphors. Now, metaphors are normal and expected as it brings out the lyrical side of the author, giving it a sense of poetry. But sometimes, it just feels simply overdone. There is a paragraph in this book which just felt ridiculously filled with them. Each line had a metaphor and I started cringing after reading a few. This was my issue with the writing technique with author. Now, if we talk about the story. I really felt some parts were just enforced to make this book longer. Except for the ups and downs I felt while reading, it was so long without having the credit to entertain us throughout that length. The main issue of Garry’s mom and Eddie’s weirdness was left undressed. What happened to the gangster that was behind Mandy? These issues which actually made this book so longish were not even addressed. Also, why was healing as a technique not addressed? I thought that was the center of the book. I’ll’ tell you how I actually thought this book was just not for me, in between the weekend I started reading a paranormal book and I was literally running off to finish it and I did it within a day. This is how crazy I get, if I like a book. I had to force myself to wrap this one. This book belongs to people who are in for; a way too much brooding male protagonist, people who enjoy books with poetical aspect with lots similes and metaphors, lastly it’s about a gal who cries whether she is happy or she is sad.
One Chance, One Moment by Judith Kohner is book one in The Mandy is the story of Amanda Fields, a nurse who is hired to rehabilitate Garry Danzlo, a famous musician after he was in a horrific accident. The story opens on the day of Garry’s father’s funeral. Garry is conflicted by his father because Jonathan Danzlo left his family when Garry was a child and before his sister, Melissa was born. Unable to deal with his guilt and sorrow, Garry takes off and gets into a terrible accident. After four months, Garry is still bedridden and has fired the latest nurse hired for his care. He is depressed that his career is over and his guilt about his father’s death. Amanda Fields is recovering from her husband’s murder as well as being accused of the crime. She is approached by Garry’s sister to help Garry and Amanda takes the job for a change of scenery and she needs the money to get her life back on track. Soon the attraction between the two becomes apparent but standing in their way is Garry’s selfish and conniving girlfriend, Daphne and Eddie, Amanda’s friend who is a little more sinister than Amanda seems to realize. I loved the flirty development of the romance between Garry and Amanda. I love the teasing attraction that left the reader eagerly waiting for more, hoping for the moment when Garry and Amanda will finally admit their attraction and make that more toward a romantic relationship. I enjoyed all the characters who had a part to play in the development of the story. Daphne is a great character to hate and despise. You will cheer when she finally gets put in her place. This book has drama, romance, and mystery. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to finish the series. One Chance, One Moment by Judith Kohner is available On Amazon on the Kindle for $3.95 and in paperback for $14.95
I was given a free copy of this book, by the author, for my true and honest review.
This is a story loosely based on the hit song Mandy, by Barry Manillow.
Garry Danzlo is a Grammy award winning singer/songwriter. Essentially he is Barry Manillow. Amanda is a nurse, with a past. Garry is in a car accident that leaves him extremely weak on one side. He's depressed and has lost the will to recover. His sister, Melissa, finds Amanda, through a friend, and hires her to come to Colorado to help Garry in his rehab. He hates her on sight and she has to fight to help him heal.
The story is a good one, in theory, but hard to follow. First, it's written in third person, with multiple points of view. I found it extremely confusing. One sentence you are reading from Amanda's POV and all of a sudden it's Garry's POV. It was hard to follow.
I also felt like some of the story was undeveloped. Perhaps there is another book being written? But there was "danger" for Amanda, but we never really found out what the danger was. The fact that she is not Jewish is an issue, but we never get a resolution to that either.
And like a Barry Manillow love song, there are cheesy moments. Cheesy lines that made me groan. It was like Copacabana meets Mandy. Overall, this just didn't do it for me.
My sincere thanks to the author for providing me with a complimentary e-book copy in exchange for my honest review.
One Chance, One Moment by Judith Kohner is book one in The Mandy story of Amanda Fields, a nurse who is hired to rehabilitate a famous musician, Garry Danzlo, after he was in a horrific accident.
Garry is still bedridden after several months and has fired any nurses that his sister has hired for his care. He is depressed that his career is over and his guilt about his father’s death and takes out his anger on everyone. Amanda Fields is recovering from her husband’s murder as well as being accused of the crime. She is approached by Garry’s sister takes the job for a change of scenery and she needs the money to get her life back on track. Soon the attraction between the two becomes apparent but standing in their way is Garry’s selfish and conniving girlfriend, Daphne.
I really enjoyed this story and felt it had a good flow and kept me engaged wanting something good for both Amanda and Garry. There was a good mix of humour interspersed with touching, heartfelt moments and romance. Daphne kept you guessing what she was going to say and do next to win back Garry's heart, I mean millions! I look forward to the next book in the series.
I loved this uplifting story of Amanda, the quirky, sweet nurse with a little magic in her, and Gary, the musician with a broken body and broken spirit. The author did an amazing job of weaving desire, humor, and tension to keep me turning the page to see what would happen next. This is an imaginative story telling. At times, I could relate to the struggles of loss and redemption and the elation of finally getting what you want, only to have it taken aware too soon. Other times I lost myself in the fun and silly interaction of the main characters and the supporting characters as well. I rooted for and booed most of the characters through their adventures. Nicholas, the butler, is a protector, a father, and a rascal getting into imaginative adventures and playing pranks on the deserving villain Daphne. I wanted to choke her! Melissa, Gary's sister, is hilarious to the point of chaos. Assisting Amanda, to disguise who she really is, the women leave a trail back to Miami and the truth of who Amanda is, her tortured past, and Eddie. Her guardian angel and personal demon all rolled into one tall, dark, and handsome billionaire. An easy read to escape into a world of sex, intrigue, the magic of redemption.
I love these types of stories and was so excited to start this one. I set time aside at night when I the kids were in bed to start reading this one. However, I was a little disappointed.
The multiple POVs just became too much especially since they were written in third person. At first I was not sure what to think of what was happening. I could see where the author was trying to go with the characters and the story, but it was just not executed properly. Some parts of the book felt like a soap opera and how they unfolded were just not believable. The premise was very sweet and how Amanda took the job to afford to adopt a little boy. I really liked how Garry’s sister handled Garry and knew all the tricks Garry would pull to get rid of Amanda. Those initial scenes were very well done. However, somewhere later, the story lost its spark. I felt like a little too much information was given. Some parts of the book could have been eliminated. I liked the characters and I liked them together. At some point it went the wrong direction and I started to feel disconnected from the story.
A copy was provided by the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Over the years, I can count the number of romance novels I have read on half of one hand; they are not my ‘go-to’ genre by any means. But after meeting Judith at an event I attended recently, and finding out that she is a writer too, my curiosity got the better of my usual reading style, and in this case I was pleasantly surprised. While not usually a fan of the ‘fall in love in a few days’ premise, Judith managed to weave a story filled with believable characters and a very satisfying ending. In fact, I find myself anxious to read the sequel to Garry and Amanda’s intriguing story.
Judith’s book flowed with an easy style, packed with realistic dialogue and steamy love scenes. Kohnen took me through the story’s action, while skillfully filling in the back story until I felt a very real connection with the characters. In the end, One Chance, One Moment had just the right amount of humor, tension, and intrigue to blossom into a truly entertaining page-turner.
If you are not a fan of romance novels, let One Chance, One Moment be the book that changes your mind; and if romance is your go-to genre, I bet you’re gonna love it!
I really wanted to like this book a lot more than I did, but it just wasn't for me. The idea behind the book sounded right up my alley, but it just didn't deliver. The split third person POVs were hard to follow and read for me. I think it would have been much easier in first person. I also felt that the writing style and dialogue made the characters seem much older then they actually were. I just couldn't get an accurate picture of them in my head. Also, there was so much overdone drama that it just seemed too unrealistic to me. If I have a hard time connecting with the characters, I just don't ever really get into the story. There are so many books that I've stayed up late into the night to finish, and this just wasn't one of them. I found myself having a hard time just finishing the book at all.

I started to read and found myself being pulled into the most loving and incredible story that I have read in a long time. I found that every time I sat down , I had the book in my hand, reading. I love to read and this book totally captivated me. I loved everything about it. The way Ms Kohnen told the story, to me, was breathtaking. I found myself daydreaming about what would happen next. I also loved when I found out it is based on the Barry Manilow song. He has always been one of my favorites. If you love a good story and want to be carried away, even for a little while, I would highly recommend One Chance, One Moment! I already have a few more people anxious to read it. Thank You Ms Kohnen for writing such a lovely story.
When I read the description I was quite intrigued with the story with its healing energy between the two characters. I was very excited to dig in to this story but the more I read the more disappointed I got. I felt that some of the drama was a little over done and I just couldn’t quite connect with the character with the writing style. I would have much rather it been in first person than switching between the different point of views. The other thing that really got me was that I felt that it was a little too long for the story. Felt that it didn’t really need to be that long.
