SECOND PAPER BOUND PRINTING. 1981 University of New Mexico Press larger trade paperback, Robert H. Lister and Florence C. Lister (Anasazi Pottery). An important look at the life and times of one of the true pioneers of Southwest archeology. - Amazon
Florence Cline Lister's remarkable career spans more than 50 years. Beginning her work at a time when women were often relegated to the background in the field of archaeology, she gained prominence as an expert in pottery analysis. Florence and her husband, archaeologist Bob Lister, traveled the archaeological world for decades and produced numerous respected studies in the field of archaeology. Since Bob's death in 1990, Florence has continued to write insightful books on the history of Southwestern Archaeology.
Interesting history of a pioneering archeologist who was instrumental in mapping out the time periods of ancient civilizations in the Southwest and among the first to use tree ring dating for his research. I wish he would have made it just a little earlier to some of the sites that were so carelessly pillaged by pothunters.
This is an excellent biography of an early figure in Southwestern Archaeology. Morris probably best remains known today for his work at the Aztec, NM ruin and his restoration of a great kiva there. While his techniques were rudimentary and would not be considered anywhere close to proper methodology today, he was a pioneer in a time when digging for pots, relics, and mummies were the primary focus rather than the more meticulous work done today. A particularly sad part of this biography is the lack of recognition of the contributions his wife Anne made to his work, which has been established in later research. Still a fascinating, though somewhat detailed read.
