His Playground

Antonia
Blood. Pain. Tears. Despair. Hate. All words I associate with those around me. But it’s true what they say. You can’t choose your family. And mine? Well, I don’t think anyone would choose them.
I’m the daughter of a notorious Don. A daughter who is nothing more than a piece of meat to be used as a bargaining chip. Which is exactly what my father has done. I can either go along with his plan to marry me off to a stranger. Or I can refuse and pay for it with my life.
Love. I always thought that one was made up. A fairy tale that had no place in the real world.
People weren’t really conditioned to love. Especially not me.
But my new husband? He almost makes me believe that love is something real. Almost.

Carlo
This city is my playground. Nothing is unattainable here. Nothing except her.
You could say she’s the one who got away. But the thing is, I never actually let her go. So when the opportunity comes along, I jump on it. I offer myself up in place of my friend.
Antonia doesn’t know it yet. No one really does. But she’s always been mine.
The arrangement isn’t just for me, though. I have more than one reason to marry this woman.
She also has more than one reason to hate me. It’s why I have to do my best to win her over… before she learns the truth and tries to kill me in my sleep.

Idk why I keep reading second chance romances. They always piss me off.

This will probably have spoilers. You’ve been warned.

I liked the first book which is why I read this one. I didn’t hate it. Seemed a little quick for me.

One reason why I hate second chance romances is because most of the ones I’ve read have the mmc breaking the fmc’s heart for some “noble” reason and he does it in such a cruel way. Then time passes and he wants her back and she usually folds like a cheap table. Thankfully Antonia does give him a hard time and doesn’t give in right away but when she does decide to give him a chance she jumps right into saying I love you.

Another thing I hate is that because the mmc breaks up with the fmc for her safety or whatever reason, he doesn’t do it because he doesn’t love her. He will spend however long that they’re separated still loving her but yet he sleeps with half the female population. And what’s worse is the fmc usually ends up celibate. Thankfully Antonia isn’t celibate during their time apart.

I also usually love single dad romances but idk.. first, I hate the name Jazzy. Jasmine is a beautiful name. Jazzy sounds stupid. And I get that she had a mother and Antonia isn’t her birth mother but I feel like Carlo was being a douche and snapping at Antonia whenever she tried to help. Like you claim you love this woman so much but you seem to want to keep her and your daughter separate. He even put in his will that Louie and charlotte get jasmine if something happened to him. I get that him and Antonia weren’t on good terms at that point but still.

I’ll def keep reading the series but I need to stop with the second chance romances.

I didn’t like this book as much as the first because the FMC was kind of annoying lol and I’m not usually a fan of the “single dad” trobe but nonetheless it wasn’t bad and I’ll be reading the third installment of this series once it’s released

the house always wins

thank you so much kylie for the arc !! i’ll never get enough of these books 😍 always a banger after banger

this is a mafia romance, arranged marriage, second chance, single dad, mafia princess, betrayal, dark secrets, poisoning, violence, torture, gore, gambling, duo pov, book two in interconnected standalone 🖤

antonia and carlo had a swoony romantic relationship a few years back. they fell in love with each other and saw a future together. but that all changed when antonia came home and saw things she wished she could erase from her mind. now carlo hears that she is being bargained off like a pawn for antonia’s father’s own benefits, he offers himself up to be her groom. antonia is absolutely clueless as to who she’s marrying. she always knew that this day would come but for it to be so soon and to someone she thought she never met before ? she can’t think of anything else besides obeying her father to avoid death. with this arranged marriage, antonia and carlo gets a second chance at rebuilding their love for each other. but antonia has her walls built up so high carlo fears he won’t be able to break it down. he blames himself for her loss of trust in him. but he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe. even if it means breaking her heart.

HELLO GIRL DADDY CARLO ?!! 🥰 omg i love him so much. i just KNEW he would absolutely steal my heart. when i met him in book one i literally already gushed. this man is so seductive i simply would’ve folded the moment he even looked at me 😭 the way he is with jazzy is actually so beautiful. he’s so gentle and his protectiveness truly showed. the man was literally threatening kids if they even think about going near his child LOL 😂 he actually ran background checks on six year olds as if they even know what a crime is 💀 he’s such a grumpy man and i love him 🫶🏼

antonia my girl 🥹 ugh she deserves the world !! her life was always being controlled mostly by her father. she grew up in fear being in that house. she knew the violence that surrounded her so she always obeyed. the only sliver of freedom was being with carlo even if it was in secret. when she walked in that night my heart absolutely dropped along with hers. gosh i can’t even think about it without sobbing 💔 she held onto that hurt for so long that she just never let anyone close to her anymore. she kept everyone at arms length after that night. but she just didn’t know the real reason … until she did 🤯 i love her endlessly. she’s someone that needs to be reassured and i absolutely felt that in my core

honorable mention for the rest of the crew 💋 LOVED getting to see louie, charlotte, sammie, emmanuel, and evie again 🥰 this group is so slay and i literally want to be a part of it so bad 😩 i miss them everyday !! and now there’s a new addition to the family 🥹 little jazzy baby !! she’s so bright and innocent. she’s seen too much for a child so young. but she always puts on a brave face. she always cares for others before herself. her story with her mom is so heartbreaking 😔 ahhh i just want to squeeze her 🫂 protect her at all cost omg !!

SO EXCITED FOR MORE IN THIS SERIES 😍
i need to know about sammie so bad it’s actually killing me !! i feel like he has such a dark side that no one questions about 👀 but also emmanuel and evie ?? omg i’ve been obsessed with them since book one !! this series absolutely EATS

This was so weird? Can‘t believe this book is written by Kylie Kent. I adored the previous book and were really looking forward to this one but I didn‘t like it at all (sadly). Everything happens way too fast and felt not realistic at all. The whole topic with Jazzy happens way too quickly and I think it‘s not relatable that this little girl just accepts Carlo as her father and lives her life happily. The story telling was flat and as a reader you can‘t feel any emotions because the topics were processed like on a checklist. Surprise kid? Check. Arranged marriage? Check. Childhood sweethearts? Check. And so on. There wasn‘t any depth and I‘m really disappointed.
This book felt messy and I had the feeling the author just wanted to finish this book as quickly as possible.

“His Playground” is the story of Antonia and Carlo.

The story begins with two parallel plots- heroine is forced into a marriage with the hero and hero discovers he has a child.

We soon realize the heroine hates the hero because he “cheated” on her, while he loooovess her.. at the same time he is now 100% devoted to being a dad so he doesn’t want heroine to be a surrogate mother. The story moves along and we see the heroine go from hatred to love once he puts the cream into the eclair and suddenly, all is hunky dory. We get some ex drama, a terrible dad plot, lots of sex and a sorta happy ending.

The fact that it’s made clear the hero slept around while heroine was whining about the heartbreak ticked me off. If he was so powerful, couldnt he have fought for her. Also, I hate a spineless heroine who forgives everything when she gets coital bliss and unfortunately the MC fell in that category.

I have so many unanswered questions… why targeted Carlo? Why poisoned Jazzy’s mom? Why she didn’t wanted to speak to him? I mean, I could go on and on and on… this felt so unsatisfying to read! It was an okay read, didn’t hate and had a good time, but unfortunately it left me feeling so confused and frustrated because non of my questions were answered. So, I can’t rate it better than this.
Antonia was 21 years old going on 9, she acted like a child the whole time, what was so ironic because we did had an actual child in the story.
I have to sincerely apologize to Louis and Charlotte, their book wasn’t that bad after all.
The epilogue of Jazzy’s prom night was so damn cute! I loved it.
Oh and don’t get me started with Uncle E, he was the best thing in this whole book!!!!!!!
Never been more excited about learning about a spinoff, I’m so ready for Dead or Alive. The date can’t come soon enough! Em and Evie are going to be epic!

Pretty good story. The side plot of Antonia’s father felt unnecessary. No real explanation was given as to why he wanted to get info on Carlos. Also, what was going on with Wendy/Penelope? No explanation as well. Annoying when a story is left unfinished like this was.

The plot was very interesting. I was entertained the whole time. Carlo and Antonia‘s story was heartbreaking but so cute I loved them as a couple. I loved the progression of the relationship between Carlo and jazzy they were so cute.

The multiple plot twists in this was so good!!

I cannot wait for Emmanuel and Evie’s book!!! All the crumbs of them in this book I was screaming!!

This is the second book by this author I have sone an arc review for. I liked this on. I like that the two mc’s felt so much for each other and were able to rekindle what they once had.
I do feel like there were pieces missing in this book. More on Jazzys mom and why she disappeared, what Joey was really after on the disc, etc. The end of the plot left me desiring a little more drama to it. But, all in all, this was a good read.

So disappointing. I was hoping it would be better than the first, no such luck. I love Kylie Kent books. ive read loads but this series feels rushed. The characters have no depth so I feel like we dont really know them enough to care what's happening. their interactions are ao basic, its hard to feel anything or understand why they are even together. So very disappointing.

spoiler...

The mafia don dad, so big bad and scary that he came to meeting with no security and got shot all in one scene. The main antagonist in the book poised a soup and had one minor shooting attempt. Just felt very rushed and had 0 point. I read this book across a few hours.

this book was unfinished.

things happened so quickly in this book. i don’t understand how a CHILD is able to disassociate from things so easily and it was never addressed head-on, only talked about like twice.

the FMC’s mom being alive should’ve been a much bigger storyline. the MMC discussed it briefly with the FMC. even if the FMC didn’t want to see her mom, the author could’ve wrote something in about why the mom left and what she is doing now. why add the “my mom’s not dead tidbit” just to skip over it quickly.

i also didn’t like that jazzy’s mom didn’t have a storyline. a woman leaves her daughter alone at a casino, stalks the MMC’s wife for a week and writes her a letter telling her “take care of my baby,” has random men coming to her home asking questions about the MMC and the author doesn’t feel the need to give her a proper story? why was she sick? how did she get sick? why were the men asking her questions about her baby daddy? why did jazzy think the men were going to take her away? if this was all the FMC’s father’s “doing” why wasn’t this discussed during their final meeting?

2.5 stars mainly because I did actually finish the story although I feel like I have no idea what was actually going on. there were multiple storylines with multiple people that I'm assuming are all going to also have their own books but nothing was really resolved.

Spoilers below. so the book starts with the MMC getting a call because his 6-year-old daughter was dropped at the front desk with a note that basically said here's your daughter. he couldn't figure out who her mom was. his daughter Jazzy was tight left about everything other than saying that she lived in a trailer park with her mom. he does a DNA test and she is his and he basically overcompensates by trying to do everything for her. I don't know if the story tells us how old he is but later in the story you find out that Jazzy's mom was his foster sister so he had been with a few times but she had laughed and went somewhere else. think she was 17 so I'm assuming he was probably 17 at that time also because he was still in the Foster system. so that would mean that he's probably like 25 based on Jazzy's age.
then you have the FMC who is 21 but is a Mafia bosses daughter whose mom was supposedly killed when she was younger and was raised by her dad. who wasn't the greatest and basically showed her videos of kidnapped girls and told her if she didn't stay in line that she would be sold off to the ex HT Trade and that's what happens to my boss's daughters who aren't compliant. we're not really given a lot of information other than the fact that at 18 years old the FMC and the MMC dated and she used to come to the casino where his apartment is. they broke up because he told her to come to the apartment and when she got there it was staged to look like he hits just slept with a blonde girl. time Jump to her being 21 and her dad goes to the mmc's boss from the first book Louie and says that he wants to make a deal and Marry off FMC then MMC agreed. his friends I guess didn't know about his past relationship with the fmc. she doesn't know who she's supposed to marry but at the engagement party she realized it's the MMC and she technically meets his daughter at the wedding but she doesn't know anything about his daughter until after the wedding and they go back to his apartment. then you get the storyline about him wanting to do everything and then he makes up a will so that all of his things go to his daughter and that if he passes away his daughter goes to Louie and Charlotte from the first book. then there's a little bit of fighting and back and forth and then this weird storyline with the fmc's college. that her dad is trying to get her to get a thumbnail drive from the MMC and she tells her husband and he shows her the file and tells her that the file shows all the bad stuff that her dad has been doing like HT trade. he also tells her on the file is stuff about her mother including photos of her mom with children and that her mom is not actually dead and she's remarried to someone else. he also shows her a file and tells her that the reason they broke up originally and that he staged the whole situation with the blonde girl because he wanted to protect the FMC.. okay. then someone tries to poison the FMC which ends up being her dad I'm still not 100% sure why but okay. then you find out apparently the reason Jazzy's mom was sick is because she was also being poisoned by the fmc's dad's people because they were asking about the mmc. I'm still not 100% sure why. then at the end people break into the apartment all the girls kill them and then the FMC decides to go meet up with her dad to give him the thumb drive with the guys watching and I'm not 100% sure why he still tried to do all the things he did but she gets mad and tells him that her mom is alive and that she basically left both of them and he gets mad and then the dad is killed. then Jazzy goes off to private school. then the story ends.

Oh and there's lots of back and forth between all the guys Being like the best Uncle and doing things like giving her a trust fund or buying her a ranch.

In His Playground, the second book in the Owning Vegas series by Kylie Kent, readers are plunged into a world of familial power struggles, deep-seated resentment, and the tangled emotions of forced love. The story revolves around Antonia, the daughter of a notorious Don, and Carlo, a man who is both a player in the city's high-stakes world and someone with a deeply personal stake in Antonia's life.

Antonia’s life has been defined by bloodshed, control, and a lack of personal agency. As the daughter of a ruthless crime lord, she is a mere pawn in a larger game, her worth only as a bargaining chip. Her father’s latest move is to marry her off to a stranger, forcing her to choose between submission or death. It’s a brutal choice, but one that reflects the twisted dynamics of her world. Her belief in love is non-existent—her experiences have taught her that love is a fantasy, a story made up to placate the weak. Yet, as she embarks on this new chapter, there’s a flicker of hope that maybe, just maybe, love might be more than a lie.

Carlo, on the other hand, views the city as his personal playground, a space where everything can be bought and controlled. However, there is one thing he cannot have—Antonia. But unlike the others who may be content with just their physical or superficial achievements, Carlo has been quietly and obsessively tied to her for years. When the opportunity arises to marry her, he seizes it, not just as a favor for a friend, but because he’s long considered Antonia to be his. Yet, their marriage is a dangerous game. Antonia harbors a deep hatred for him, and the mystery of his true intentions looms over their forced union.

What unfolds is a story of power, manipulation, and the slow unraveling of emotions as Carlo works to win Antonia over, all while keeping secrets that could destroy everything. The tension between them is palpable—Carlo must navigate the delicate balance of proving his sincerity while managing the lies that brought them together. And as Antonia comes to terms with her situation, her growing connection to Carlo challenges everything she’s known about love, trust, and the darkness surrounding her.

Kylie Kent’s writing is intense and gripping, weaving a tale of love and hate in a world where nothing is as it seems. The complexity of the characters, especially Antonia and Carlo, adds depth to the narrative, with each chapter pulling the reader further into the tangled web of their emotions and the dangerous world they inhabit. His Playgrounds is not just a romance, but a story of survival, trust, and the battle between personal freedom and the inevitable pull of destiny. For readers who enjoy steamy tension and intricate plots set against the backdrop of crime and power, this book delivers on all fronts.

This book was cute, not the best writing and not the best plot flow.
I think Kylie Kent has a lot of work that need to be done in regards to her writing and development of plot, characters, overarching mysteries.

My first issue is the characters:
The FMC and MMC in every single book, follow the same development,
MMC - "I'm obsessed with you, and now you are mine forever (knows nothing about FMC)"
FMC - "I do not like you for some reason and I will never forgive you (forgives him in the next chapter) I love you (Knows nothing about MMC)"

They get married, the FMC is harmed in some way and saved by the MMC and they live happily ever after.
It is like she took all of the Mafia/Mobster tropes and she just jumped from cliche to cliche. The worst part is she had a good concept, with the Vegas strip idea.

My next issue is writing style, grammar and plot
So many of her lines are make no sense, super abrupt and weird, here are some examples
- “You’re awake? Shit, thank fuck! Damn, you’re awake.”
- "I walk up to the chef and my suspicion is confirmed. The asshole is dead. I must have stuffed the cloth too fucking far down his throat."
- "My fingers curl around the butter knife in front of me. God, I wish I were a violent person. Someone who wouldn't mind spilling blood all over this perfectly- dressed tables. I wonder whether the party planner chose the color scheme or if this was Carlo's doing (LIKE WHY DOES SHE SWITCH SO MANY TOPICS AND POINTS LIKE THIS?)"

The little girl “Jazzy” gave me some mixed feelings. I just don’t think she was written well either
- I liked her initial plot she , however I think Carlo could have warmed up/connected with her a little better.
- As soon as she was dropped off Carlos became the perfect father. He never had any hiccups, or mistakes as a new parent would be (especially a mobster with no parental figures).
- Besides that Jazzy says really random things like: "Are you going to die like my dead mommy?" "You’re the best not evil step mom".
-Sometimes the speaks like she’s 10-12 and other times she speaks like she’s 5-6

Plot points
- The author never resolves the pot point with Jazzy's mother, like why was she dying, why didn't she tell Carlos. The main characters start looking but they never come to any resolve.
- Any why her father weas trying to kill her was really fuzzy
- We never really know who Emmanuel is? What he is doing?

The plot points we do get are written like this - "I didn't cheat on you all those years, I faked it", "why?", "bc someone threatened your life", "why didn't you tell me?", "idk", "I don't believe you", **shows proof (picture), "Okay, I believe you"?!???!?!? like goodbye depth, details, explanations, apology's.....

At this point it really feels like the author is popping out book after book without proper editing, revision, filling missing plot points

I hope the other two books are better.

ARC Review of His Playground Book 2 in the Owning Vegas Series by Kylie Kent I love love love this book, a 5 ⭐️ read for me. I am obsessed with this series. I loved His Kingdom which is Charlotte and Louie’s story and have been waiting for His Playground which is Carlo and Antonia’s story since and it definitely did not disappoint. This is an interconnected series but can definitely be read as standalones but the same characters appear in all the books. I would say this is a darker romance because of the subject matter like the mafia aspect and violence but it still had me cracking up I love all the banter and tension between Antonia and Carlo and I love the friendship between Carlo, Louie, Sammie and Emmanuel and how much Carlo’s friends love his daughter and how these big scary men melt for her and compete to be her favorite uncle. Carlo will do anything for his daughter and the woman he loves he may be tough and scary to everyone else but is kind and soft with them. Even though I wish this book was longer it is really well written and smooth, a lot gets fit in and it doesnt feel disjointed or rushed, it feels cohesive with a well thought out plot. I loved the amount of suspense and the twists. This is a Mafia, Surprise Single Dad, Spicy, Fast Paced, Forced Proximity, Arranged Marriage, Second Chance, Darker Romance. This is Carlo and Antonia’s story. Carlo runs Aces High Casino and is in business with his best friends Louie, Sammie and Emmanuel. They are part of the organized crime (mafia) in Vegas. Carlo just found out he’s a dad to a 6 year old girl named Jasmine (Jazzy) when she arrives by herself at his casino with a note for him. Carlo is trying to find out who Jazzy’s mother is and where her mother is also while dealing with accepting an arranged marriage with Antonia the daughter of a rival crime family who he had a secret relationship with years ago but purposely broke her heart because he was trying to protect her. Now he's marrying her to form an alliance between their two families and to stop her father from marrying her off to someone else. Antonia loved Carlo but now she hates him for what he did or what she thinks he did. She tries to fight their connection and her feelings for him but the more she’s around him and the more she watches him with his daughter the more she can’t deny she still loves him once she has a talk with Carlo she promises him she will actually try with their marriage. I absolutely love Jazzy she is adorable and I love how much Carlo loves her and wants to be a good dad. I also love Jazzy and Antonia’s relationship. I loved this book and cant wait for the next one in the series

Three years ago, Carlo and Antonia had it all. Until he broke her heart and left her picking up the pieces. Fast forward to present day, she finds out that her arranged husband to be is none other than the man who tore her apart. But this time, he has a daughter and isn’t willing to back down from making Antonia a part of his family.

“I can’t protect my heart from this man, because he already owns it. He always has”

Antonia is a mafia princess with a real heart and soul. I found her insecurities and trauma to be relatable, her struggles with self worth and feeling like she wasn’t good enough as a response to how they ended really brought up some emotions for me and I totally felt like I could understand her. But what I liked most about her was how resilient she was, whether it be adjusting to her new life as a wife and step-mom, loving those around her, or just getting through her feelings for Carlo. And she knows how to handle a gun, what a queen!

Carlo was really refreshing to read. Yes he’s hurt Antonia in the past (for good reason), but inside that tough exterior is a man who is willing to do anything for the ones he loves. He’s so fiercely loyal, not afraid of responsibilities or changes, and just willing to step up to whatever challenge comes his way. I really liked him as an MMC cause he was authentic.

“I can show her that she is enough. That she’s more than enough. She is all I need. The only woman I have ever and will ever love.”

The found family trope is one of my favourites so to see the entire gang back together, growing their families and looking out for each other? Shout out to Matteo Valentino (the love of my life) for his small cameo. It’s so heartwarming and nice. Jazzy was the princess of the family and I adored seeing everyone doting over her, especially her uncles (the competition between them for who gets to give Jazzy better things? Ugh, loved it!) Antonia fit right into the family and I loved the bond that she and Charlotte shared.

I’m so excited for Emmanuel and Evie’s story as well as Sammie and Lailani’s. The Vegas gang is one of my favourites and whenever a new book comes out in this series, you know that it’s time to kick back, snuggle in a comfy throw blanket and get started. If there’s one thing Kylie Kent knows how to do, it’s to write amazing characters with depth and a plot that leaves you wanting more and His Playground really did live up to my expectations.

“His Playground” is the second book in the “Owning Vegas Series.” Carlo Bianchi was orphaned at eight years old when his parents were murdered. He went through a few foster homes before landing on the the streets, right alongside Louie and Sammie. Louie is the bossman and to “clean” the dirty money, he bought three casinos on the strip. Louie runs the Royal Flush, Sammie manages Wild Card and Carlo runs Aces High. Together, they have each other’s back!

“Blood, money, lust, love. It’s all right here. Las Vegas. The place where people come to try to win against the odds. The thing is… the house always wins. And me? I am the house.”

Carlo’s life is thrown a curve ball when he is called to front reception to deal with a “sensitive matter” and finds a little girl standing there with nothing but a note. “I’m Jasmine, but you can call me Jazzy. My mama says you’re my daddy.”

The next day in a meeting with Louie, Sammi, himself with Joey Marciano, he agrees to marry his daughter, Antonia Marciano, as a merger between both families, to bring peace. Her father has decided that “Antonia will be married regardless. It will either be to one of your men or someone from another family.” Now he is marrying the woman that he always wanted to, but how will Antonia take it - probably not too kindly! In twenty four hours he finds out that he is a dad to a six half year girl and is about to be a husband to a woman that may want to kill him!

The story is full of passion, humor, intrigue, betrayal, vengeance, power, control, twists and turns around every corner - most of all love ♥️ There is never a dull moment - you will be hooked! The book goes from pages that sizzle, to extreme violence, to the most beautiful tender moments!

You will fall in love with Carlo and Antonia, hoping that everything with work out for them and if they have a future together. There is never a dull moment - you will be hooked! I know I was - just love these two! A thoroughly enjoyable read from page to page, one chapter to the next - at times you are metaphorical “on the edge of your chair” wondering what will happen next. Overall, I would highly recommend this book and you will not be disappointed 😊
