Auschwitz, 1943. Ella tries to ignore the coughs and crying, the whispered prayers. Her eyelids grow heavier, but then a melody floats though the block as if on a breeze. Her lips open on a gasp, joy making her heart sing even as it shatters. She would know that voice anywhere…
Sitting bolt upright, Ella rubs at her eyes and concentrates on the music. Is she dreaming? She’d fallen for Luka’s voice the first time she heard him singing on the street corner near her house, with his kind smile and joyous laugh. He was her first love, and the pain of being torn apart still slices at her.
He’s alive. But even as hope swells in Ella’s heart, terror threatens to swallow it. Luka is Jewish. If he’s here, he’s in grave danger—even more than Ella faces for sneaking into the ghetto to see him back in Warsaw… But she will never regret it. They had fought every day for their love, even knowing where it might lead…
Despair tears at Ella as she battles to find the strength to keep going, to search for Luka even on the days when the bitter cold whips through the camp—the days when her body feels weaker than ever and her friends are lost to the cruel regime. At night, she listens desperately for the sound of Luka’s voice as he’s forced to perform. Knowing he’s still alive even if she can’t see him is the one thing that brings her peace.
Until one night when, as his first haunting notes reach her bunk, an angry shout splits the night sky, the music stops, and there is only resounding, terrifying silence…
A beautiful, heartbreaking yet hopeful story that will restore your faith in humanity and in the power of love to triumph over evil. Fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Nightingale and The Choice will be blown away by this gripping page-turner.

This author is new to me and I plan to start reading her backlist. I read quite a bit of WWII historical fiction. This was one of the best I have ever read. Luka is Jewish and Ella isn’t. They are madly in love. Both are eventually sent to Auschwitz, she as a political prisoner and he because he is Jewish. I learned so much more about this era. I was often on the edge of my seat. A very emotional listen for me. Outstanding narration.
I was blessed with an audio ARC from NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own and unbiased. If you enjoy this genre and time period, I highly recommend.
I ordered this the minute I heard it was available for pre-order. I love this author and can hardly wait. My pre-ordered audiobook arrived today. I have set everything aside so I can absolutely devour it. I listened to the audiobook over two days" It was so gripping. The author has masterfully put it together. The plot differs from the multitude of Holocaust tales out there and has many twists, turns, strange beginnings, and near misses. The use of descriptive language, combined with the clever employment of the senses, and the warm, complex characters make for an enjoyable reading experience. I intend to read the print version so I can dissect every word. As an aspiring author, I am sure I could learn much from this writing style
Emotional, inspiring, superb, Shari J Ryan delivers yet another masterpiece. Set in Poland during WW2 the story follows the developing relationship between Luka, a young Jewish man and a young non-Jewish women Ella. The Singer Behind the Wire masterfully balances the weight of horror, starvation, torture and grief with the human spirit of love, bravery, resilience and strength. A heartbreaking, heartwarming novel that will have readers reaching for tissues. A highly recommended read. 5 stars I would like to thank the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for my free copy of this novel, in exchange for my honest review. #TheSingerBehindtheWire #NetGalley
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC of this novel. I love WW2 fiction and cannot believe that I have not read this author's books in the past. I liked the book, but perhaps I am getting burned out on this genre, because I can't say that I loved it. It was a little slow. However, I still plan to look for her other books about WW2...in a few months.
Luka, a passionate singer, found solace and expression in music. He would often perform on the street corner near Ella’s house, captivating passersby with his soulful voice. Their love blossomed, and they held onto the hope of a future where they could be free.
Now, in a camp, Ella heard the most beautiful sound—Luka singing in the night. But as she listened, she realized the danger he was in. Luka was Jewish, and his presence in a camp meant he was in grave danger. One terrifying night, the music she cherished filled the air, only to be abruptly silenced. Despite the hardships, Ella never lost hope of seeing Luka again.
“The Singer Behind the Wire,” a captivating tale written by Shari J. Ryan, weaves a profound narrative of courage, hope, and enduring love. This heart-wrenching story deeply moved me, shattering my heart into a million pieces before gently reassembling it.
From the very first page, I was utterly captivated by the story and found myself emotionally invested in the characters of Ella and Luka. I shared in their tears, reaching for the Kleenex countless times. This book was an absolute delight, a journey I couldn’t put down. I will never forget this story. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
This is an emotional and heartbreaking historical novel, set during Holocaust and WWII.
Luka is Jewish but has a beautiful voice and is a singer. He sings by voicing out his feelings and emotions. Ella hears the voice--initially she was reluctant to find the source of voice but she finds Luka. She falls in love with him and it follows a forbidden love story. But then soon, both of them are transported to Auschwitz and they need to learn to survive so they can be together again.
This was beautifully written and is quiet emotional to read as well. The story is told in the POVs of both Ella and Luka, each detailing their horrific experiences in Auschwitz during their imprisonment. Ella was determined to meet Luka and Luka was determined to survive in the Holocaust. Of course, by reading through the harsh and bitter conditions that the prisoners suffered made the story a whole point realistic. The ending was great .
Overall this book is worth five stars.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
I love Shari’s historical fictions. This is a fantastic book. Ella and Luka’s love story is gut wrenching. It really makes me think about how many people were torn from the loves of their lives because of the war. They had obstacles against them simply because of their different religions.
Ella wanted to help Luka and his family, and it ended up being detrimental to her. Even in concentration camps, they hold out for each other. Through everything they dreamed of returning to each other.
Emma does a great job portraying both characters. I loved listening to the audio and was able to devour this one while I did a lot of hated tasks around the house. I’m surprised I didn’t end up in tears multiple times.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copies of this book.
Wow! I love historical fiction and this is one of the best books I’ve read.
This was such a powerful piece of work, taking me on a rollercoaster of emotions while listening to this fictional account of what happened in the past during 1940’s to Ella, who has fallen in love with Luca, who is Jewish, their families, and people who tried to help them, and how they both ended up in Auschwitz. The characters and their situation felt so real and while the reader/listener in 2025 knows of the horror awaiting them, as the story unfolded their innocence about what was happening to them made me cry. The narrator did a great job of bringing the story to life. I love discovering a ‘new to me’ author with a huge back catalogue of books to catch up on.
The Singer Behind the Wire by Shari J Ryan is an unforgettable, heart wrenching journey between two young people in love during a horrific time in history. Ella is a Polish young girl whose family owns a market who becomes entranced by a lovely singer’s voice. Luka is a Jewish young man with dreams of being a singer. The two fall in love in a sweet way until the two are forced to deal head on with the changes in Poland during the German occupation, the Warsaw Ghetto and Auschwitz. The way the author portrays the love and sacrifice of these young adults will leave you grabbing for tissues and feeling heartbreak with every word throughout the story. The love that Ella and Luka felt and the way they fought to survive gives a glimmer of positivity through an unthinkable time. This story and the way the author told it will leave you heartbroken through much of the story. The events experienced and the way it was portrayed on the page makes you feel you are living it with the characters, feeling their emotions with them. I cannot recommend Shari J Ryan’s stories enough. Another unremarkable, heartbreaking story of love, loss and a glimmer of hope in an unthinkable time!
This. Broke. Me It’s taken me a few days to process and write this review. Singer Behind the Wire isn’t just a love story; it’s a story about bravery, strength, and resilience.
This unforgettable story took me deep into Auschwitz. Ella was brave; her thoughts were constantly about her first love, Luka.
The writing was so descriptive, taking me into the barracks and the silence of a horrific world.
Ella’s adamantness was a huge part of the story, as she never gave up despite starvation, grief, and the constant threat of death.
She constantly hoped—and hearing Luka’s singing voice across the camp kept her going.
This story was moving and powerful, and it will definitely be hard to forget. You’ll need tissues. I sobbed in parts.
Every time I read one of Shari J. Ryan's incredible WWII fiction books, I am emotionally wrung out and yet filled with hope for humanity.
When Ella and her Jewish love, Luka, are separated in Warsaw, they vow to never give up fighting for each other but are tested to the absolute limit when they discover each other incarcerated in Auschwitz a few years later. Luka's singing was what initially drew Ella to him and serves as a way for her to know he is still alive, listening for his voice as he is forced to sing while he watches his fellow Jews being led to their death.
I find it abhorrent that humans could, and still can be, as barbaric and cruel to others as happened within the Auschwitz camps. Shari captures the hope and love amongst the cruelty and her wonderful and inspirational characters are superbly well written with raw emotion oozing from every page. Ella and Luka's journey is something that will stay with me for a long time.
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Shari J. Ryan and Bookouture, for an ARC in return for an honest review.
“I’m not stationed by the chambers because they’ve decided I should die…yet. I’m here to entertain those who are waiting their turn to step inside. I’ve spent time at two of the four gas chambers until this point.”~ Luka
“You’ll receive a daytime assignment, I’m sure. You might not assume so, but there are several opportunities for Nazi chosen musicians here. However, you won’t find any to be gratifying, I’m afraid.”
“I pull in a breath to silence my body, straining to catch every note until the song grows clearer, the gentle melody a caress against my fractured heart. He’s still alive. That’s what matters. We’ve made it another night here. Despite the torture we all face here, Luka’s voice still somehow defies the despair surrounding us, carrying a sense of comfort and hope, even with the growing damage in his tone. It’s as if his life depends on each word…” ~ Ella
The author masterfully weaves personal love, historical tragedy, and the unspeakable horrors of war into prose that feels both intimate and universal.
I finished this with tears in my eyes and a heart both broken and grateful. A five-star read that I’ll carry with me for a long, long time.
I wasn’t ready for this one. The tension. The heartbreak. The history. Absolutely stunning. #BookTok #FiveStarRead #TheSingerBehindtheWire #NetGalley.
Where do I start …. This story was brutal and horrifying but I saw brief periods of love, hope and dreams. I loved this book I was totally captivated. This is exactly how I imagine a concentration camp in WW2 to be. Life was impossibly hard yet these strong and resilient people refused to give up whilst living in bloody awful conditions with barely enough food to sustain life. This book was so well written, I went through so many emotions whilst reading this story it was like I was on a rollercoaster. I felt wrung out by the end. Highly recommend, if I could give this more than 5 stars I would!
I am definitely going to seek out more from this author now! Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this one, I spent many nights up late because I didn’t want to put it down.
At first I did find it a little bit wordy, and overall I think another edit could have shortened it a bit - also it definitely needs an edit because there were many small errors left in (POV changing, name of minor character changing) which brought me out of the story when they happened. But I did enjoy the story enough to overlook those.
It ran as a dual narrative for most of it, with Ella and Luka’s alternating chapters as they found each other and lost each other and found each other again, over and over throughout the entire span of the war. A lot of time is skipped forward in many cases; it is really at heart the romance between the two of them which drives it and their experiences in Auschwitz and the Warsaw ghetto which come second.
As much as I enjoyed the book, Ella sometimes drove me a little crazy! That girl has no sense of self preservation- I swear most of the wild things she did would have seen her be killed if this had been real.
No spoilers on the ending but I like that what needed to be wrapped up was wrapped up quickly.
Shari Ryan this is a phenomenal book! The way you tell a heartbreaking but necessary story full of hope and determination moves me in a way that only you can. I know reading these type of historical books you are going to shatter my heart along the way but the manner in which you mend and heal it throughout their journey is breathtaking and keeps me hanging on every word! Luka and Ella are the sweetest couple and it’s easy to see why E would do anything to help and protect the young man she fell in love with before the world as they knew it was demolished. These two are fighters in a place that it would be easier to give in and give up but they don’t desperate for a future they once dreamed of. The unspeakable, horrific things they had to experience and witness will be burned in their minds forever! I held my breath, yelled internally and externally and cried sad and happy tears! Spectacular story telling of a heartbreaking time in history!
I am not familiar with this author, but I am excited to delve into more of her works. I have a strong passion for reading historical fiction, especially those centered around World War II, with a particular interest in stories penned by survivors of that era. Although literature about WWII can often be challenging to process, I find that I am drawn to narratives that are rooted in genuine experiences.
Luka is Jewish. Ella is not. The Germans are taking over Warsaw. It was unlikely that they’d ever meet and even more unlikely they’d fall in love. Can their love defy the odds and carry them through the rest of the war?
I read a lot of WWII books, and the stories can be redundant. I was so pleasantly surprised with this one! It’s different than the others I’ve read, and I particularly liked showing that political prisoners were also in the camps. The plot takes you from right before the creation of the ghetto through the liberation of the camps. I appreciate the length of time covered as you really get to know the characters. They are all wonderful. You feel their joy and sadness right along with them. Their loses are devastating. Their moments together are happy and hopeful. I was rooting for Luka and Ella from the beginning, and I held onto hope the entire book they would have a happy ending.
This is an absolutely fantastic book, and I’m excited to go read the other books written by this author!
*Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!!*
Do you know who needs to read this book?? Everyone needs to read this book. It should be required reading in high school and college. The author has written a story that crushed my heart. It should crush everyone's heart. It should have everyone in tears. We need to remember the horrors of the Holocaust. We need to take numerous moments every day and remember those that were treated with such cruelty. Remember. Never forget. Nerver repeat.
What makes this story so important is it illustrates the struggles experienced by numerous persons. Luka sings in a Warsaw town square to make money to feed his parents and grandparents. As a Jew he had lost his job. As a Jew he could not find another. As a Jew he was not to be with anyone that was not of Jewish descent.
The reader gets to experience how difficult it was to be with Ella, what they were willing to risk to be together. They could both be arrested or worse. When he and his family found themselves within the walls of the ghetto she didn't stop. The reader soon learns of the terrible conditions within the ghetto. I sat in silence wondering how anyone could survive the cruelties of the Nazis. I didn't think it could get worse.
I was so wrong. Different situations find Luka and Ella at Auschwitz. Pictures of the atrocities isn't enough. Feeling as if you were there because of the written word isn't enough. The inprisoned had names. We all need to learn the names, learn their stories, learn of the suffering. With knowledge we can hopefully make sure it never happens again.
The Singer Behind the Wire by Shari J. Ryan. A must read of a horrifying time in history. I’m emotionally spent after reading this. The all consuming love of Ella and Luka that never ends. This story is a wonderful heartbreaking portrayal of being in Auschwitz and surviving against death at a moments notice. The loss and hope flys at you from this book. Thank you to #NetGalley and #Bookouture Audio for this Arc. This is my honest review. Book releases June 5 2025
The Singer Behind the Wire is yet another beautifully written story from the talented Shari J. Ryan. She presents this heartbreaking journey of two young people in love, set against the backdrop of wartorn Poland with grace and respect once again. The delicate balance between reminding her audience about the horrors of the Holocaust and the possibility of true love in the middle of all that madness is a gift I have come to truly adore about her. And honestly, after reading this book and all those that proceeded it has only proven just how in tune she continues to be wrt these stories of hope despite all the despair that her characters are forced to endure.
The bittersweet romance between Ella and Luka, however, is what ultimately drives this book. Two very selfless people who only want to be together yet are torn apart by the evil that overtook their world all too quickly. I admired Ella's determination to make sure Luka's family had enough to eat and how she sacrificed herself as she continued meeting him even after he was sent to the Warsaw ghetto. My heart was once again in my throat as I knew she'd had to eventually be caught as part of the resistance of those not Jewish but willing to help those who were to stay safe and protected.
But it's the grueling day-to-day that Ryan describes that had me putting this book down several times at all the suffering once both Luka and Ella are taken to Auschwitz as the war ravages on and evil continues to win. It was very hard to read what each endured, Ella as a different kind of prisoner of war, first working at compiling lists of those Jews taken into custody. And then as one who had to go through treasured belongings to separate what might be valuable to the Nazis and what was simply tossed away. I could feel her withering strength to carry on yet all she could think about was finding and saving her Luka. To think about all the sacrifices she experienced is beyond humbling and I was rooting for not only her survival but for her hope that would one day be reunited with her love.
I wasn't sure just how the story might play out as I've noticed Ryan getting bolder with her storytelling and showing us the painful ravages of war with an increased amount of personal tragedy that touches our main characters. But I plowed on knowing my heartache was miniscule in comparison to what Ella and Luka might ultimately survive. With the war continuing on and cruelty as strong as ever as Luka becomes part of the entertainment night after night, I could only hope Ella might hear him sing from her own dreadful barracks and find the strength to keep hoping.
The Singer Behind the Wire is a powerful story of resilience and survival. A reminder of the past that is not to be forgotten especially in these troubled times. Wildly hard to fathom yet important nonetheless to admire how the human spirit can be brutally damaged but still withstand what is necessary to keep love in one's heart. With an ending that although poignant still felt a bit open, I have to be honest and say I might've wanted just a glimpse into the future to perhaps see that dreams, no matter how damaged and ravaged by war, can still come true. But I suppose for now I can wish that to be so in my own imagination.
Another winner for this amazing writer, when looking for something that will show you a side of history that will give you pause, I encourage you to read this book. It will sear your soul while filling it with the knowledge that yeah, perhaps love can conquer even when the world has seemingly gone mad around you. And ultimately make you glad that there continues to be someone to tell these remarkable stories in a thoughtful and stunning way.
The Singer Behind The Wire by Shari J Ryan is a powerful historical novel that will simultaneously horrify and also break your heart as you witness man’s inhumanity to man. The action is set in Warsaw during World War II before moving to Auschwitz. We see that there were those who could not stand by and do nothing. When they witnessed the persecution of others, they felt compelled to act, regardless of personal safety. Life was hard for all, but especially for the Jewish population. We witness the erosion of their liberties until they were squashed behind the ghetto walls – 400,000 in the Warsaw ghetto. We see that love can still happen – even ‘banned’ love. A young couple meet where they can – even eventually forced to meet in a sewer. “They can force us to behave in a certain way, but they can’t control the way we think.” When minds are free, there is still hope. Hope is what kept people going. A hope for a better tomorrow – but also aware that today was all they had. “Anything can happen tomorrow, so today is important.” Friends and neighbours ‘disappeared.’ Some were concerned. Others looked out for themselves. Betrayal was all around. A character laments: “how many people need to disappear until someone takes notice?” It reminded me of the poem First They Came by Martin Niemöller a German Lutheran pastor born in 1892. It is truly horrifying to witness the utter cruelty and depravity of the Nazi regime. It was horrific in the ghetto. It was even worse in Auschwitz. Within Auschwitz you needed luck to survive, and also hope. Alone, there is despair. You needed to find a friend to keep you going. They survived for each other. People were forced to do horrendous things in order to survive but “what happens here doesn’t define us.” There were things that people were forced to witness that they could never ‘unsee.’ “I will never be able to close my eyes again and see anything else.” Love keeps people going. When it is torn away, there is despair. “Grief is a consequence of love.” Shari J Ryan has written a powerful novel. It is difficult to read at times and will make the reader feel uncomfortable. There are some hard to read scenes but they are very necessary. Evil walked the earth, and we need to know about it in memory of the six million innocents who perished and of those who survived. Thank you Shari J Ryan for reminding us that even in the darkest pit, love can still bloom. I received a free copy from the publishers. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Ella is a young Polish girl living in war torn Warsaw. She’ had fallen in love with Luka’s voice the first time she heard him singing on the street corner near her house. When she meets him; his kind smile and joyous laugh brings joy to Ella. They soon fall deeply in love. However he is Jewish and she is not and therefore forbidden to marry.
They are separated in Warsaw and discover both have been sent to Auschwitz. Ella doesn’t know if he is alive or not. . Luka's singing brought them together and now his singing as he is forced to sing while he watches his fellow Jews led to their death.
Story follows Ella quest to find him.
This was my fifth story book by Shari J. Ryan. I was first drawn to her psychological thrillers which were all excellent!
I am not a big fan of WWII stories are usually so disturbing as it was a time when the unthinkable happened. However, I read and love The Family Behind the Walls I am not Jewish but I worked as the Director of College Guidance at a Jewish Day School. The founder was a wonderful Holocaust survivor who we all called Papa. He and his wife often told us stories of their survival; I know it is important that we never forget.
I love Ms. Ryan- she is a wonderful story teller. She is the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, Shari brings a deeply personal connection to her work. Her stories are rooted in truth and remembrance, written to ensure history is never forgotten. In this case she took a disturbing/emotional situation and had me glued.
A negative regarding this audiobook is that it did not include author’s notes and/or Acknowledgements which is rather typical of audiobook. However, it always something I enjoy reading. There is no doubt Ms. Ryan did extensive for this story.
I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this uncorrected proof. Publishing Release Date scheduled for June 5, 2025.
One thing about this author-she continues to amaze me. This novel was so intense and sorrowful that I could not put it down. The emotions that she brought out in me defy gravity and left me feeling out of sorts on how I would have acted during WWII. I like to think I am a good person and therefore would have been one of the first to jump in and help the resistance but there is another part of me that wonders if I would have the courage to stand up and fight. One thing for sure the Ella in this book had more than enough courage to do the right thing. She is everything I would hope to be in a most difficult time. The fact that she fell in love with a Jew in a time when it was forbidden speaks volumes about her character and instantly makes the reader fall in love with all she stands for. Luka her love interest, seems so dependent on her at times I wanted to shake him and tell him to quit being such a prima donna and on the other hand I loved the way he would remember Ella and the good times they shared even when it wasn’t permitted. He did deal with a lot of things that Ella did not have to deal with as she was Polish not Jewish. His grief alone could have led him down the road he was on. It all leads to the question on how. How many times did he say he should let her go so she would not get into trouble? Then she does and he spirals into a world of depression and guilt. Ella spends more time in Auschwitz than he does and seems to have it a little easier as she works in the administrative building. Maybe that is how she is able to find her strength to carry on. To think of living in that place as long as she does is just mind blowing. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that likes a Historical fiction book but be prepared it’s not all sunshine and roses and will make even the most avid reader cringe in spots. I would recommend this book to everyone. But be prepared once you start you won’t put it down until you turn the last page
Shari J. Ryan is a phenomenal writer and I automatically read anything she writes without even having to read the synopsis. The Singer Behind the Wire is set during World War II in Poland from the formation of the Warsaw Ghetto to imprison the Jews to the horrors of Auschwitz to the liberation to the period immediately following the liberation.
Ella heard the breathtaking voice of a young man one day, beauty among the ugly. Ella was not a Jew but was part of the Resistance and smuggled food to those who were desperate for it. She and Luka met each other in an unusual way and instantly connected. Not only did Luka sing but he also composed...and was a Jew. This came with terrible risks for them and those around them. They were involved with sewer tunnels escapes which came at a huge cost. Ella was forced to Auschwitz where she was humiliated, demoralized, starved, and tortured. Death was a constant part of life and details are not glossed over which I appreciate. Later, Luka was taken there as well and forced to sing for the Germans while suffering horrendous treatment. The juxtaposition of his gorgeous voice with the terrifying executions is haunting and surreal. Luka's relationship with his mother grabbed me with an deep intensity. What Holocaust prisoners endured is inconceivable.
Ryan described the emotional and physical toll the death camps took on its inmates in a harrowing and realistic way. Her imagery and details are dreadful to read but very, very important to know. My heart melted and ached during this all-sensory reading experience. Especially poignant and profound was the liberation and the aftermath of impossible conditions. It is difficult to put my feelings into words but oh, what a powerful novel! It knocked me off my feet completely. Do not miss this one.
A well written and heartbreaking story set in Poland during the WWII. The book was captivating, again we step into the world of horror, the Holocaust, what many people were put through. The story is about Ella Bosko, the daughter of a Polish Catholic grocer and Luka Dulski from a jewish family. The characters are like a true testament to what happened during the WWII. The people in this story, and what they lived through, how dangerous the situation was. One moment the jews were living their lives and soon the SS were there taking the jews and others that were resisting, trying to help the not so fortunate people. The jews were living in the ghettos until they were captured and deported to the concentration camp in Auschwitz. This story is unraveling the horror and difficulties that many of them were living. How not only jews would end up in Auschwitz. With time many of the ones that were kept barely alive, were malnourished, were working very hard or else they wouldn't see the next day. When the families were deported, many of them didn't make it they were lined up and not aware of what awaited them. Luka who entertains by singing to keep the waiting people calm. Ella has the strength to fight and try to help save those she gotten to know, she goes beyond barriers. Ella takes on her mission and is a very brave young woman and does all that she can to try and find the man she's fallen in love with. This book is an amazing read, and this time it is about the singer and his fight to stay alive behind the wire in the concentration camp of Auschwitz. Having lost so much there may still be some hope left. I'm grateful to have read this amazing book and I can definitely recommend this read. Charlotte N
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review.
I have to say that no one that I have read writes a story in this time period like Shari J Ryan does. She has this magical way of making you fall in love with these characters and be so invested in their lives that it feels like it is happening to you in the moment. I can't even imagine really though now that I have said that what these actual people lived though in that time period. It breaks my heart into little tiny pieces. This is the story of Luka and Ella. She is a young Polish girl whose family owns a market. Luka is Jewish and has been dreams of one day being a singer. It does not take long for Ella to fall in love with his voice and eventually him. However, big changes are happening where they live and the Germans have occupied Poland, the Warsaw Ghetto and Auschwitz. They are both taken to the prison though. She has a political prisoner and he because he is Jewish. I don't want to tell you about the story other than what I have said. I think that you need to discover that as you read this story. I can promise you that you will not forget this story ever. You can feel the emotions and trauma and the will to survive bleeding off the pages of this book. My heart broke so many times that I had to have a Kleenex near when I was reading this book. This is a breathtakingly beautiful love story. When you finish this book I would love for you to know that Shari Ryan has written several books during this time period. You need to go and search those out because they are equally amazing. The Girl With The Diary is one of those books I have never forgotten. You need this book in your life right along with this one.
