Their hidden past brings questions about their future . . . together.
Unsure of her future within the Amish community, Beth Peachy arrives in Lancaster County for the summer to care for her ailing grandmother. Yet with dementia threatening to steal away Mammi's memories, Beth's visit quickly evolves into an urgent search for answers to questions that her relatives seem determined to avoid. How can Beth possibly make a lifelong vow to the Amish church when her own family is concealing so much of the past from her?
Beth's childhood friend Danny Lapp faces his own dilemma as his ex-Amish older brother turns his back on their family upbringing, dishonoring his Plain heritage. Struggling to find some sort of connection with his brother despite their deep difference of opinion, Danny is determined to find a solution before church leadership becomes involved. As Beth and Danny reconnect and seek to help each other in their search for answers, they find themselves stirring up not only surprising revelations about the past, but questions about a possible future--together.
"A tender journey that explores friendship, second chances, and finding unexpected love."--AMY CLIPSTON, bestselling author of The Heart's Shelter
Book clubs and fans of Beverly Lewis, Suzanne Woods Fisher, and Wanda E. Brunstetter will love this can't-put-down mix of romance, family secrets, and touching faith in an Old Order Amish community.
Still Waters by Patricia Johns is a heart touching, uplifting and emotional read that shows how faith will bring renewal for rest and peace when we are still before the waters God Leads us to as the Psalmist wrote in Psalm 23.
I loved how Beth went to Shepherd Hill to care and assist her aging grandmother along with finding answers about her dad. Beth wasn't sure about joining the Amish faith without having answers. Danny Lapp was a neighbor to Iris Beachy and knew Beth when she was younger. Their re-connection brought heartfelt moments of the two of them talking openly about their views and what was transpiring in their families. The secondary characters added further depth to the story in so many ways.
The story is penned where I could feel the characters emotions whether it was the anguish, relief, grief, joy, peace and love for life with God leading them each step of the way. The hidden past brought answers that had layers of twists and turns. I applauded the way Johns' had the characters to respond in every situation. I was fully immersed in this story and wanted it to continue. I will be abiding my time and wondering what is going to happen in Through The Valley, book three in The Amish of Shepherd's Hill series. The characters have become like family to me, despite all they have encountered in life their trust, faith and love saw them through with God leading them in His quiet gentle ways.
I received an early copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers without any obligation to give a positive review. I have expressed my own sincere thoughts.
