First DNF for 2025. I’ve like some of her previous books, but this is just lazy writing. The story doesn’t make sense, and the flow doesn’t work. It’s almost like there was a list that needed to be ticked off and the writing was done around it. Really disappointing.

DNF….48 % I thought how they met was cute. Even the second time they crossed paths was cute, the rest was bad. I was trying force myself to finish the book but couldn’t.
FMC is Queen of Delulu. Even thinking he was more than a friend…yes your captor that’s it.
There was no description made of the FMC only her eye color.
The dog is cute, just got a little too much at times. It seemed like Rufus was also a main character
The instant love between the MMC & FMC was too much for me. I feel like this book had a lot of repetition

Nicole Fox does it again with the big cliffy that leaves you white-knuckling your Kindle, lol 🙈. Thank God we never need to wait long for the conclusion. Lots of laugh out loud moments and witty banter. The storyline wasn't the fastest, but still easily held my attention. Can't wait to see how this all plays out!

Ms. Fox's books have become exceedingly long in length averaging around 900 plus pages for a duet. In my opinion you lose something in a series that is too long because the drama and the story can become repetitive. Addressing the same elephant in the room over and over again is frustrating and doesn't move the story along but bogs it down.
I really enjoyed the first part of this book and even bought into the plot of a Pakhan meeting the dogwalker after a feisty Great Dane under Nova's care attacks Sam or recognizes him? Their initial banter/dialogue was very entertaining and I was intrigued in both Nova's character as well as Sam's until it all went down hill.
I literally skimmed the second half of the the book because of the number of times that Katarina, his half brother and Leonid set up Nova's character to appear as a mole or a traitor to Sam. The fact that he believed them was very distracting especially knowing these people so well. The lack of trust that he had in a woman he professed to "care about and want to protect" grew tiresome and lost its value.
Nova's character was an embattled young woman who was trying to help her friend Hope get a "dog walking" animal training business going. I liked Nova's character until she started making one bad decision after the other. She wasn't the best dog trainer, nor was she good at averting dog mishaps with people or other dogs. Second half of the book she became a train wreck as she is threatened, coerced, lied to, not trusted, kidnapped all in a matter of a short period of time. And.....of course she ends up pregnant with Sam's baby. Pregnancy is engrained in this genre whether it is forced or not.
I felt that Sam's character lost ground in book one as he was constantly being played by his half brother, father and ex-wife. I mean this guy is the head of a multi-billion dollar company and is the head of the Bratva, and yet they are always one step ahead of him. He just didn't live up to prior characters in other books that seemed like they had their act together as a Pakhan/business man.
I loved Hope's character. I would love to see a book about her.
Hopefully book 2 will elevate this duet to a higher rating.

I LOVED the meeting between the two characters but I ended up hating the male lead. But I also felt compelled to read more because it ended on a cliffhanger and I wanted to know what happened.
The heroine is a dog walker and the hero is a mob boss/businessman. They meet when the dog walker loses control of the Great Dane she’s walking and the dog tackles the hero with affection. It was absolutely adorable. They had a flirtation and it was so so cute. It made me so excited for the rest of the story but the rest let me down.
There was so much betrayal and back and forth of the hero deciding every time the heroine does anything that it’s a betrayal and she can’t be trusted anymore. It’s frustrating. Like she has no idea who he is and his ex wife approached her in the park and he immediately thinks they’re in cahoots. These types of scenarios happen at least four times in this book alone.
I need to know what happens though. I know I’m going to hate it but against my better judgement I’m going to start the next book.

This book would be a lot better if the fmc would stop taking him back every single time & if the male lead would apologize for every cruel thing he said or did. It's a doormat fmc & a cruel male lead which is okay because he has mommy issues apparently. Yuck

So far I’ve enjoyed reading this duet. I will say Sam needs to learn some communication skills for sure. But the tension between Sam and Nova is 🔥. Looking forward to seeing how it all ends in the next book.

I fear I just don’t like Sam. And why would I read a romance book abt a guy I don’t think is hot. I wouldn’t want a man like him, and honestly, Nova shouldn’t either.
In all realness though, this was just confusing. The plot (which I’ll get into) is a mess, but I really enjoyed the meet cute and coming together romance.
He was sweet in the beginning and I love a good push and pull love story.
But, even though I enjoyed this, (I enjoy trashy books leave me alone) my main issue is that it tried to be a meet cute romcom AND a mafia romance with graphic violence, and THEN tries to make millennial dog jokes. Which with a book like Lights Out, it works, because that’s the whole premise, but here it just felt like halfway the author decided to turn it from something cutesy to a dark mafia.
Conclusion!

Nova is in business with her best friend Hope. Nova is a dog walker. Nova had a horrible experience living with her father. Nova loves to visit her Grams in the nursing home and she has plans to move her Grams out into a two bedroom house with her. Nova is taking a Great Dane named Rufus for a walk in the park, Rufus is not trained and he starts humping a man in an expensive suit. Nova tries to rein in Rufus but he doesn’t listen until the man tells him to sit. Samuil is the pakhan of the Litvinov Bratva in Chicago. His ex-wife slept with his brother Ilya and they divorced. Sam is having problems with Ilya, Katerina, his father and the Andropovs. Sam is quite taken by the little dog walker Nova. Their next encounter is when Sam is talking on the phone by Lake Michigan and Rufus escapes from Nova again and they all go into Lake Michigan. Nova offers her apartment for Sam to get cleaned up in. They end up having sex and Sam can’t forget about Nova. Nova also thinks about Sam. Rufus is Katerina’s dog, she is Sam’s ex-wife and she is trying to take him down. Sam believes that Nova is conspiring against him with Katerina and Ilya so he kidnaps her and Rufus and takes them to his penthouse. Sam and Nova have ups and downs and she leaves to go back to her apartment. Sam goes to get Nova and bring her back. Will Sam and Nova be able to have a relationship without the interference of Sam’s family and his ex? Will Ilya convince Sam that Nova is indeed stabbing him in the back? Will Nova escape from Ilya? Will Sam find her again? Will Sam listen to Nova’s explanation or will he kill her?

In terms of Bratva books, this one was so/so. It's what I would consider "mafia light" when it comes to the mafia/bratva genre of romance novels. The fact that the MMC (Samuil) is a pahkan in the Bratva is definitely a factor and plays into the storyline fairly often; but we don't get a lot of that close up while reading. It's more on the periphery of the plot and plays into what happens with the two main characters. The FMC (Nova) was an innocent bystander who was flirting with a hot guy and gets caught up in Samuil's world without really intending to. But Samuil becomes obsessed and won't let Nova go without a fight, or ever. Things get really hairy when Samuil's brother Ilya finds out about his obsession with Nova and she becomes a pawn in a power play when her loved ones are threatened. There were a lot of ups and downs in this book and was definitely an interesting read. It ends on a cliffhanger, but the duet is complete so you can get the next book right away.
For a mafia romance story, the spice in this one falls flat. Not that it doesn't happen at all, but when it does, there isn't a ton of description and leaves a lot to the imagination and doesn't feel completed in nature. There's a lot of fading out when it seems like it should continue. And it for sure isn't as frequent as any smut reader would hope. So in terms of spice, which was 1/5 at best, it falls a little flat.
Despite being irritated with all the back and forth between Samuil and Nova and their combined failure to properly communicate or truly listen to one another; this was a fairly decent read. If you're into possessive Russian dudes, give it a try. If you really like the Brava aspect of things in a mafia genre romance, maybe try another one.
Some thoughts I had while reading through this book:
I completely understand lusting after a really hot guy that you just met and flirted with, who seemed interested in you. But giving life to that fantasy by verbalizing it to your best friend who is taking you on some sort of sexual vision quest doesn't seem the way to go about it. Oh, and the sexual vision quest takes place on the porch of a client of theirs. Very professional behavior. And regardless of the intentions, what kind of a friend would send such a raunchy ass voice memo to a guy that is really just a stranger she met like 3o minutes ago. Not a great one. Doesn't matter if there were positive results as a side effect of sending the voice memo; sending it in the first place was shitty.
Hope redeems herself later on in the book and proves to be a real ride or die friend, but I still think what she did very early on in the story was a shit thing for her to do.
Dude ... have some self respect, Nova. Samuil literally kidnaps you off the street because he can't trust fucking anyone. Yet you're drooling all over him after about 3 days. He's part of the mafia and has stolen you from your life, not worried about any of the consequences that will cause you. Get a grip girl. No dick is so good that you should be okay with being kidnapped. And the self disrespect just continues the further on you get in the book. Samuil might say that he wants Nova out loud, but his actions are speaking volumes and continues to not trust Nova and accuse her of more shit without talking to her first. He accuses her of selling him out like three times and Nova forgives him time and time again. Honestly ... it might be Stockholm syndrome after some point.

Dog walker - Nova ends up in a bit of meet/cute when the dog she's walking tackles Bratva Boss - Samuil. That leads to her friend - Hope taking matters into her own hands and playing matchmaker to them both to get them together. Only their sweet beginnings don't last for long as demons from Samuil's past have left him with deep seated trust issues that affect their dynamic. One of which led Samuil to kidnap Nova. Now I understood Samuil's trust problems but he didn't really give Nova the benefit of the doubt from the start of this book which grated on me slightly. Other than that I really liked Nova. She was sweet and quirky even with everything that she was going through. Myles and Hope were great buffers too. A good start and I'm looking forward to the next book now.

This book elicited both laughter and anxiety for me. Samuel is a character that evokes affection, yet he possesses a formidable presence due to his limited trust in others. In contrast, we have the endearing Nova, a dog walker who becomes romantically involved with an extraordinary man connected to the Bratva. She finds herself amidst chaos, having been kidnapped and forced to make difficult choices to protect her grandmother. Nova's struggles seem unending, and now Samuel believes she has betrayed him. I am eagerly anticipating the release of the second book to discover how their story unfolds.

You might want to hang on don’t blink and you might want to make sure you are buckled up because this is going to be one crazy ride usual mafia antics betrayal, jealousy, lies, secrets, murder, and throw in a little maybe even a lot of violence while we are at it but also a little love so buckle up 😊! Sometimes you want to hit your best friend in the head to the white me so to speak in other words you hate her and love her at the same time that would be the situation our girl Nova independent building her dog walking business with same said best friend which is why she finds herself in with her best friend, after recording their conversations about the hot stranger man and yep you guessed it sent it to him for a listen. Thanks to a lovable Great Dame puppy (who thinks he is small 😊 add that to the recordings and we have an adventure. Samuil sexy as all get out billionaire bratva pakhan nice when needed but on a good day dangerous, ruthless, but every day deadly will die or kill to protect those he cares for and when a certain puppy decides to pounce than begin to hump his leg well it was the women attached to the end of the leash that caught his undivided attention. The magnetic pull was there but the moment he heard the messages boy did that take the text messages to another level. They get to know each other but his enemies come out of the shadows ex-wife, half-brother her father all coming for him through her by kidnapping her to try and either get money or information will he get to her in time to save her, will she ever get back to her normal life without any complications, where are they headed?

Wow is all I can say. I could not put this book down once I started reading it. I love how the book started off. It had me laughing throughout the first few pages. I could just picture everything that was happening and all the feeling that went with each scene. As I continued to read, the story line kept me captivated forcing me to pick the book up any chance I could get. The story was well thought out and it ended with such a cliffhanger I had to pick up the second book immediately. The characters really changed and grew with each page of the book. I felt every emotion, including the fights and romance throughout this book. I can not wait to read the next part of this fantastic book.

This has got to be my favorite of Nicole Fox’s books yet! I love the setting (Chicago), the realness of the characters, and the dogs! I put off sleep and eating in order to finish this book because I just want Samuil and Nova to understand each other and have their HEA. I just love all the interactions from Samuil’s POV as he has fallen so completely and utterly in love without knowing! I also love Myles and enjoy reading his scenes and I hope he can get a HEA for himself. I cannot wait to start the sequel!!.

Book #8!
I stayed up wayyy too late to finish this one and start the second one! First Off,If you haven’t read any Nicole Fox books—you definitely need to. I have read a ton of her duet books and love them! They are always in a “duet” and leave off on a cliffhanger.
This one was intense. Nova a dog walker has a “meet cute” with Samuill when the dog she was walking knocks him down. She has no idea what she is getting herself into! They have crazy good chemistry lol. Lots of dogs,family drama and a cute grandma!

I have to admit this book was full of suspense, but it wasn’t the kind of book I prefer, that’s on me . I really did not enjoy the story line of Nova being treated so unfairly by everyone , and the verbal stuff coming from Sam was a real turn off for me , I skipped ahead a lot , I won’t be reading the next book !

This booked sucked me in at the beginning. Their first encounter was a fun meet cute that will grab your attention.
However I think this could have been a stand alone it really didn’t need to be dragged out to two books. I would have liked to see a story between the two best friends instead.

I love nicole fox and her books but this one was rough.. i hate that the fmc is such a pushover gor the mc, mc is closed off af and doesnt dhare anything with the fmc yet he expects her to understand the threats of his life, and howerver badly he treats her she just rolls over for him bc she loves him and is atracted to him and i hate that, there is no groveling after he breaks her time and time again they just fuck and we get some lame af dialouge from them shared in the dark which also explains nothing about him. If we didnt have the dual pov we wouldnt know what happened with his ex wife and brother bc he doesnt share it with the fmc which is just bs, i mean how can she know why their marrige ended, that she cant trust Katerina when she says he hit her and stuff when his explanation is “you cant trust Katerina “ i mean wtf?! I really love the author, all of her books are amaizing but this one just falls really flat with the dynamic between the couple.. im onto book two just bc im jnterested if he ever shares what happened with everyone but so far 200 pages in still nothing.

This story was very engaging. I adore Nova and her spirit. She has faced so many obstacles and refuses to be beat down by the struggles. Sam is just as broken but copes in a completely different way. The two of them is a journey to trust and healing. I can’t wait to see how things pan out in book 2!
One thing to note- I do wish there had been a trigger warning for on page dog attacks. I had to set the book down for a bit after that but was able to resume and get back into the story.

Not worth it.
The only thing this book has going for it are the occasional snippets of humor and the guy on the cover. The other reviews must be from bots bc this was a total waste of time.
The female character is weak and unrelatable. She loves being kidnapped. I mean who doesn't?
The male character is a Dbag who rubbed me the wrong way as soon as he unrepeentedly kidnaps her. Cocky is not sexy.
Tbh, this feels like a story you'd find on that one platform full of immature mafia stories over written by 13 year olds. It would fit right in. Also, the smut is boring and totally skippable. It would impart the same exact feeling if the author just wrote "And then they had sex.." instead.
