Als ich noch der Waldbauernbub war

Rate this book

Peter Rosegger was an Austrian poet from the province of Styria. He was a son of a farmer and grew up in the forests and fields. Rosegger went on to become a most productive poet and author as well as an insightful teacher and visionary. In his later years, he was honoured by officials from various Austrian universities and the city of Graz. He was nearly awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913.
Most of his works are set in the rural areas of Styria, which he knew best, and are concerned with the social and political changes of the time. His poetry ranges from romantic to political.

A book by an Austrian, for Austrians. The "Heimatsroman" movement gained traction in the latter half of the 19th century as a juxtaposition to the novels that depict urban life (particularly that of the upper class). Consequently, these type of novels found their way into many households, as they tend to depict the life of the everyday man, especially rural farmers. Having spent a significant part of my childhood near Rosegger's hometown, his stories never fail to reinvigorate the wonder I have felt when I used to roam the Alps as a young man. This book in particular focusses on his childhood stories which range from funny to gut-wrenching. Life back then was by no means easy, but it was fulfilling.

This collection of stories are the childhood memories of the Austrian writer Peter Rosegger (1846-1918) growing up on a farmstead in the Austrian alps. They range from funny to serious, all lovingly yet realistically told. It is a fascinating glimpse into family life perched high in the mountains in the mid-19th century with all its hardships, but also filled with hope and even serenity, for it was grounded in a flourishing, deep, and abiding Catholic faith.
