Introducing the King brothers-three red-hot Texas billionaire cowboys who are wildly devoted to their family ranch...and the women who can tame them.
SHE KNOWS WHEN TO HOLD'EM.
As a newcomer to the great Lone State, Chloe thinks she's immune to the charms of cowboys-until Ryder King comes along. A gorgeous rodeo star with a gambling problem should spell trouble for Chloe, who's as quick-witted as she is stunning. But there's something gentle in Ryder's otherwise wild nature that gives her pause. And she can only fight her attraction for so long...
IS HE READY TO SHOW HIS HAND?
Texas born, bred, and proud, Ryder has always had a way with the ladies-though not so much with poker. He's just bet, and lost, a third of his family's ranch in a game. Can Chloe, the daughter of a card sharp who knows how to play to win, team up with Ryder in Vegas to help him win it back? The closer Ryder comes to getting back the ranch, the greater he risks losing his heart to Chloe. Is he ready to lay it all on the line for her? And can she trust that Ryder is for real-or is one of Texas's most notorious playboys too good to be true?

3 - Poker was easy compared to dealing with Ryder King. Stars!
The Devil Wears Spurs, is the first book in the Texas Kings series. The Kings being brothers Ryder, Nate and Chase. This is also the first book that I have read by Soraya Lane, and on the whole it was an enjoyable experience.
"If I let you stay will you be in my bed?" "Sure… so long as you’re not in it."
Ryder King’s life is currently on a high, a bull riding champion, with women throwing themselves at him in general, and plenty of fun available on the circuit, it is safe to assume his ego may be a little too big for his Wranglers when he returns home to the King Ranch due to his grandfather’s ailing health. That ego is also what ultimately has the potential to be his downfall as well.
Overconfidence in a high-stakes poker game leads him to lose his third ownership of the ranch, and it is now a race against time to somehow win it back, and from the families biggest enemy no less, before his brothers find out and kick his ass into the next century.
"Darlin’, if I was winning, you’d be butt naked and riding me right now."
As luck would have it Chloe is working the bar that night and sees Ryder’s loss at the tables, even luckier for him she’s a bit of a poker officiant, due to her father’s less than stellar child-rearing skills, also short of cash herself and looking to make a fast buck to enable her to pay for her college tuition they strike an unlikely alliance.
What follows is an easy-going adventure to Las Vegas and back, and then back to Vegas again, Chloe and Ryder both suffer from commitment issues, and as such the agreement of ‘friends with benefits’ for the duration of their deal, is reached. The deal… Chloe with her poker smarts wins back Ryder’s lost stake in King Ranch, in exchange for the money to pay for her education.
While I enjoyed this book there were stretches of it that, did just that… stretch, and I found myself a little distracted. Parts of the story were really enjoyable, and in general I liked the voice that the author gave both characters, as well as the development to the King Family as a whole. Chloe was easy-going, Ryder; sexy and experienced, and together they were really sweet. The second half of the book if paced better than the first, but all in all it was a good start to a series.
"You look good in a suit, but I’ll never stop admiring your ass in a pair of jeans."
Cowboy Take Me Away is due at the end of 2015, and this is Chase King’s book, I will be interested to see where the author takes the series in general as well, a few snippets were left open in this book in regards to Nate, as well as the introduction of Clay King, Grandfather to the King boys, and in ill health, I am guessing there may be a few tissues required at some point in the future.

Somebody grab my fan and an ice cold glass of water because this book is on FIYAH!!!!!! I think I loved everything about this book. I’m anxiously waiting for the next book in the series.
Chloe Rivers is my kind of heroine. She’s smart, high-spirited, and has a big heart. Ryder King is all alpha male until he lets his machismo outweigh his good sense and loses his ranch while gambling. Fortunately for Ryder Chloe happens to be an excellent poker player, and she is willing to help him win his ranch back before his family finds out. At the end of the deal Chloe will have tuition paid at her law school and Ryder will have his ranch and the two will part ways never to meet again. Or at least that’s the way it should have been, but love has a way of changing even the hardest of hearts.
I almost cried when Chloe had to deal with her father. I cheered when Ryder stood up for her. I pleaded with Chloe not to leave Ryder. Then I pleaded with Ryder to go after Chloe. So I was definitely drawn into the story. I read the entire story in one sitting because I had to make sure that they ended up together. I love the steamy “throw caution to the wind and let’s worry about tomorrow when it gets here” type of romances. This one exceeded all of my expectations.
The characters were well developed. The author allowed the reader to see the strengths and flaws of each character. The other characters in the book like Ryder’s brothers and Chloe’s friend added depth to the storyline, and it really made me feel like this story was real. I can’t wait to read more about them in upcoming books. This author is now in my must read category, and she’ll be in yours too after reading this book.

I enjoyed this contemporary romance between main characters Chloe Rivers and Ryder King. It was my first book by Soraya Lane, and I'll definitely be reading more of hers. Chloe and Ryder were great characters and I enjoyed the storyline of Chloe agreeing to win back Ryder's part of his family ranch after he lost it in a poker game. The book was quick and easy to read, while keeping met interested and entertained. It was a great start to a series.
I liked the spunk and sass Chloe had, "seriously, Ryder, put some goddamn clothes on,” Chloe said, eyes narrowed . “I’m not just going to jump into bed with you because you’re half-naked if that’s your plan." When Ryder tries to be funny, he's just not, "sweetheart, if you’re not warming my bed then someone will be. I appreciate what you’re doing for me, but I’m not a effing monk." The accent and southern charm the boy had was just plain hot, "Darlin’, if I was winning, you’d be butt naked and riding me right now." I really loved Ryder he liked to take care of his girl, "just tell me they didn’t talk you into strip poker ,” he asked, talking straight into her ear before nipping her lobe. “I don’t want either of them seeing my girl naked." I enjoyed this book so much I can wait for the other King brothers to get their books.
So much love for The Devils wears Spurs! What a fun, sexy and entertaining read.
Loved all the characters, the King brothers had me laughing out loud with their banter. This book ticked all the boxes for me, I couldn't put it down. The storyline was fun and enjoyable and the characters were memorable and well developed.
Highly recommend The Devil Wears Spurs and I'm looking forward to reading Chase King's book next in Cowboy Take Me Away
Thank you to St. Martin's Press via Netgalley for the advance copy.
I had a lot more fun with this book than I thought I would. ALL of the characters were great, the story line was a touch different from most cowboy romances out there AND it kept me turning the pages until the very end. Oh, and Ryder, well...HOT! Yup! A great read for any fans of the genre.
This was definitely a fun and racy novel. Lane drew me in with her intriguing characters and kept me hooked with her wildly original plotline. She brought ranch life, rodeos, and gambling to the forefront in a vivid way that you can’t miss.
Lane’s characters really make the story. The main couple both drew my attentions, but in very different manners. Chloe’s personality was so natural that I couldn’t help but like her. Her past made me feel for her, yet her current strength ensured that what I felt wasn’t pity. Ryder was another fantastic character, and the perfect leading man for this tale. He shows us how a rodeo cowboy can be so much more. And Lane doesn’t stop her character development with these two, she develops friends and family in such a manner that you’re dying to know more about them, wanting to know what their stories are and what the future holds for them.
Lane’s latest release is definitely packed full of chemistry and heat, but it’s also so much more than that. It was a truly enjoyable read that kept me coming back for more.
Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.
I am a fan of a good cowboy story. Although I must admit that it was the cover that really drew my eyes. Right from the beginning this story started out good. I liked both Ryder and Chloe. I could feel the instant chemistry between them. Which did not disappoint when they did hook up. It was very steamy. Yet it worked because it was not just about the sex but a real connection. Ryder is the type of guy that you would find hard to resist. He is not only good looking and rich but he is also charmingly sarcastic. Chloe is a strong female lead that could stand toe to toe with Ryder. She even called the shots at times. Although the story was mainly focused on Chloe and Ryder, his two brothers, Chase and Nate were great too. They helped bring comedic relief. I can't forget Chloe's friend, Shelly. I look forward to reading the next book in this series, Cowboy Take Me Away which is Chase's story.
This romance was a toss up between 3 and 4. Parts of the story were extremely good, while others parts were so so.
The Kings are certainly a family I want to get to know better. The brothers intrigued me. Chloe was easy to like. She had a charm and grit that I jived with. Ryder was devilish and adorable. I could not help but like him.
I would give the other books in this series a try. There was definitely enough there to keep things interesting.
Nice western romance about a woman who meets a cowboy with a gambling problem. I liked that the hero in this story is not perfect. It made the read more interesting that he had to over come his gambling problem.
I had a hard time not laughing at first since I grew up around cowboys. This was by no means what I'm familiar with in them- needless to say, it was very comical. However, her writing is very gripping. The pages just beg to be turned! I hope to read more of her work.
Let me introduce the King brothers. Nate, Chase and Ryder. Owners a fortune raised by the maternal grandfather Clay, now they were divided taking care of business. Nate looked after the family property portfolio. This meant that he has the executive poser, traveling in the family jet to solve large transactions. Chase took care of part of the ranches. Ryder, the youngest, was lost as to his place amid the huge conglomerate, then, at eighteen, he left home and went to get his dream, to be on cowboy rodeos. He became very good at it, winning multiple awards across the country. When his grandfather became ill, Ryder returned home in Texas, but not abandoned what he was doing despite his brothers complaints.
And it was in one of his performances that he came across a beautiful girl. As soon as he came down from the bull, he went to her, but though she show any sign of interest, denied to him. It was enough to raise his interest, No woman snubbed a King.
Chloe lived in her friend's house and had moved to Texas to start a new life after he discovered that her father, an inveterate gambler, had stolen her fund to pay for college, plus a small inheritance that her mother had left. She worked as a waitress in a bar to earn money and back to law school, and was not interested in getting involved with anyone right now.
Days after her meeting with Ryder at rodeo, he appears at the bar where she worked and she ends up witnessing him lose part of his ranches to Parker.
Parker was part of a family that for years had quarrel with the Kings. They made a fortune intimidating poor in debt people, making them sell their land at lower prices. Every time Ryder's grandfather knew about that he intervened and helped the families, but not always his help was on time. The feud families only worsened when Ryder's father got involved with Parker's mother, when his wife was still alive. And even if their case has not been continued because she left town, the damage was already done. When Ryder's mother died at his birth, his father cared little for the children and didn't think twice when Clay offered money to he gave up the custody and go away.
Ryder was devastated by the loss and knew his brothers - and grandfather! - would kill him for being so stupid. But then came Chloe.
She had been raised by a gambler. Her childhood had been participating and watching gambling of all kinds, living like a princess when her father was in the hot luck, or as a beggar when he was in bad one. She knew all about playing and winning in poker.
Her offer was simple: she would regain Ryder's ranch if he paid the full college of her and left the game. Without too much nowhere to run, he accepted her proposal. But within the proposal just been something else, like they have to pretend they were dating for the men at poker table accept her in the game; she moved in with him by the time the plan was underway and a little trip to Las Vegas so she could take a well trained. And on this trip which was business turned pleasure ...
Chloe falls into the good graces of the King's family, including grandfather, and realize that she was more than in love with Ryder. Yes, he showed a hell of interest in her, but she was scalded to live with men who ended up disappointed her, starting with her dad who was again on bad luck and owed money to several people in Las Vegas - who met Chloe there, came charging her his due. So, as soon as their agreement had been fulfilled, she left without looking back.
Ryder was devastated but respected her decision and didn't go look for her. A month forward, again in Las Vegas, this time to defend his title at the rodeo, Ryder and Chloe met each other but an accident can make this love has not the happy ending they crave ...
I love these King brothers. All the best !! The pace of the story is good. The characters are charismatic. Typical wealthy bachelors who have women at their feet, but of course, they always prefer those that have snubbed them. The story was flowing very well but in the end I didn't like Chloe running away but then coming back the decision. Other than that, everything was great.
Waiting anxiously Chase King's story, COWBOY TAKE ME AWAY, to be released in December.
I have to admit, in my mind I was picturing this story to be back when Texas was first established like 200 years ago, not in the current. I can't even say why but it sure was a great surprise!
Chloe is a waitress at a bar, sleeping on her best friend Shelly's sofa until she can get some money saved. One day she and Shelly go to the rodeo. She isn't sure why she went but it turned into the day her life changed. She catches sight of a man as he sees her. He is gorgeous. Later he comes over and talks with her. He asks her out and for her phone number, which she refuses. Her friend Shelly, who is happily drunk, is yelling Chloe's number to the guy.
Ryder is the younger brother of 3 and feels inferior to them. His oldest brother runs the finances for the family and the second runs the ranch. Ryder left and established himself in the rodeo circuit to prove he is good at something too. His brothers are not happy with his choice because of the danger to himself. The family has money, a lot of it.
Chloe is working one night at the bar and has a shock. The really hot guy she saw at the rodeo is in her bar, playing cards! He is smooth with the come-ons, you can tell he has had a lot of practice. He is playing with a group of men and some serious cash is being used. They've all had too much to drink. Ryder has run out of money and after being chided by Parker, he bets his part of the family ranch and Parker bets one of his ranches. There has always been animosity between Ryder and Parker's family going back many years. They play the hand and Ryder loses, Parker played him.
Chloe is shocked by what she sees. Ryder walks out and a few minutes later she goes out to check on him. He is devastated by what he has done. His brothers and grandad will never forgive him and he doesn't blame them. Chloe starts seeing bits of the real man behind the suave comments as they talk.
She comes up with an idea. She will win back his ranch and in return Ryder will pay for her law school education. She had been a student but had to take a year off due to financial issues. They talk about how she can in a game with Parker and come up with an idea. She will pose as his girlfriend. She is of course very attracted to him as he is her and is worried about it since she is to come stay at his house and play the girlfriend role. They both decide to give into the attraction, when she has won the ranch back for him they will go their separate ways.
Will Chloe win the ranch back? Will she be able to leave? Will he want her to?
This book has such a great cast of characters! Ryder is cocky and quite sure of himself but he really is a nice guy. His mom dies right after he was born and his dad was just a jerk, should have never been a father. His grandad took he and his brothers and raised them.
Chloe has some serious trust issues. Her dad was a gambler and drug her all around Vegas. She was more of a chore than a daughter. Her mom took off and left her and her father. She learned Poker though and was good at it. She spent her money paying back her fathers bad debts until she got tired of it and left.
Shelly is her best friend and co-worker. She wants Chloe to get on her feet, go back to school and find a good man. Nate and Chase his brothers are good hardworking guys. The Grandad, Clay, is awesome and has always been a great role model for the brothers.
I would definitely recommend this book. It's got a sassy woman and hot men with brains! I am looking forward to reading about the King brothers!
This author really got my attention with her high strung alpha male and her sassy hot firecracker lady. When you lose everything or those things most important to you the only way to go is up. The author gives you two people who lost the most important things to them from two different sides of the track. They come together to get back what they lost one puts up the money the other plays the game. Separate they are outstanding but together they make an amazing team, will they put all the pieces together and realize a team is what they are or will they walk away from the best thing either of them could have?
Ryder always felt he must prove his self at 18 he decided he must make a name for his self to show his family what he was made of he started riding the bulls and became the best Bronco rider in the state. He is the bad boy, playing hard, drinking and gambling which he was good at until he gambled the wrong thing thinking he had it and was shocked to find he didn’t. Ryder is a wonderful character with soul, tough, alpha but gentle. There isn’t a woman alive that ever told him no until he met Chloe. Ryder isn’t going to let that stop him he is on the chase until he does the one thing she can’t over look…..
Chloe has had a very rough time, a bad childhood where her father used her and her money. She walked away from that vowing never to let a man get close. Her dream has always been to become a lawyer until her father gambled leaving her pay off his debts. She has had to put her dream of becoming a lawyer on hold until she makes enough money to pay her way. Meeting Ryder was fun she knows him for what he is a player. He could be fun until she watches him gamble way his ranch. With one thought in her head she can win this back for him she knows how to play the game. With him giving her back her dream to go to college and him getting back his ranch it is a win, win for them both. That is until feelings get in the way leaving them both hurt. I loved Chloe she is my kind of lady with her sassy attitude she brings Ryder down a peg or two.
The author gives wonderful down to earth characters you can relate you as you fall in love with them. This first book sets the stage for the rest of the series. It is a fun loving book which will make you laugh out loud with the trouble and humor these two stir up. This family of men are just the best they have overcome a bad childhood. Their grandparents took over their raising giving them the love they need to become the wonderful men they are. This is a very touching read with some serious issue that will make you want to cry as your heart breaks for each character. The author tells it in a way that really touches your heart as she gives you a wonderful down to earth story you find you cannot put down. I stayed up late to read this until I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore.
I just adored the supporting characters and can’t wait to read their stories. The grandfather is an amazing man I just adored him. I know when he passes on it will break my heart. I just loved him he reminded me of my own. You find a lot of wonderful characters and some you do not like to well. I am sure each will turn up as these series takes off. I enjoyed the humor the author brings to this story along with the passion, the common goals, hopes and dreams. She gives a wonderful plot with an outstanding read. I am really looking forward to reading more from this author.
Did you hear that noise? That was me beating my head repeatedly with this book. Why, you might ask, would I do such a thing? Well, silly, nonsense storylines often make me beat myself with the very book that I am reading! But I am starting at the end so let me backup a bit.
Ryder feels sorry for himself. He's rich, attractive and darn good at his chosen career. He has started to feel like maybe it's time to return home and become part of his family business. But as the baby of the family he feels so useless and left out. Oh, poor baby! So what does he do? He decides to bet his third of the family ranch in a poker game. And he loses. I know, shocking! And that lose makes him feel even worse.
Chloe is a beautiful women with a tough past. She is working hard to put herself through law school. She decides that living in Texas and working at a bar with her friend is a great way to earn enough money to keep herself in school! (I don't know why that rubbed me the wrong way.) Then Chloe claps eyes on Ryder and the attraction is BAM! She is there when Ryder loses his third of the ranch. Now she knows just how she can get the money for college! She is card sharp going way back and she can win the house and land back for him. She is awesome like that. And all she wants from him is free room and board while she works on her scheme, an all expenses paid trip to Vegas so she can practice her card playing (she's a bit rusty, you see) and then he will pay for the rest of her education. Afterall, a rich guy with a huge problem should always trust a hot chick after she confesses to being a huckster!
Yeah. I had trouble finishing this book. In fact, I put it down more than once and read other books. The writing wasn't bad but the story was just so painful. And then the characters fell in love after a like 2.2 seconds. I absolutely hate that! And then to rub salt in the wound, his family thought she was great and totally wanted the two of them together....forever! Yes, I believe rich, successful families would totally be on board with this relationship.
There is a ridiculous bad guy who is all bluster and no bite. There is a trip to Vegas that could have been full of strife but ended up being full of ridiculous, predictable bad guys. So much wasted potential!
The writing? I was able to form pictures of people and locations. I thought the characters had some great elements. I felt like there were some solid ideas in the book. I just felt like the plot was lazy and silly. I don't know if I will read the next book in the series. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't mind instant love. I would not recommend this book unless a reader has time on their hands.
Quotes: There wasn't a doubt in her mind that she'd regret helping him, but the poor guy had just bet away the deed to his ranch, and if anyone could help him, she could. If he gave her what she needed, she could solve all him problems. page 29
She blew out a breath, listening to Ryder but with her attention focused on the room in front of her. "Here's hoping." It still amazed her that he had trusted her, but then again he didn't have much to lose in giving her a shot. page 138
I don’t normally use the half star ratings, ‘cos I just round up anyway for the other places I post reviews. Yet reality is that often stories aren’t 4 or 5 but that in between place. For me The Devil W ears Spurs is a 4.5 stars story.
If you love Cowboy Romance, then you are going to love the beginning to the new Texas Kings series, The Devil Wears Spurs – a lot. There is just something about the youngest son in a family of over the top type of men. The three brothers – Nate, Chase and Ryder each have a third ownership of the family ranch. Nate and Chase have uniquely suited to their personalities and strengths duties for the ranch. Ryder – well, Ryder ran off and joined the rodeo. It is what he does the absolute best and he loves it and the lifestyle. Now after years on the circuit and championships under his belt he’s just a tad bid cocky and over sure of himself on and off of the circuit. He’s not a nasty arrogant type of man, simply one who knows his own worth – if he has one huge fault it is his determination to win at any cost in any thing. Ryder likes to gamble and tonight his luck just went far south. He’s lost his portion of the family ranch in a card game. It’s a loss that will change him, humble him, to a certain degree, and in the end give him the best gift he never deserved.
Chloe is aware of Ryder, it’s hard not to if you enjoy the rodeo. But while she might notice his moves in the spotlight, she has no intention of getting involved with a man who takes the kind of risks Ryder does – on and off the circuit. She has her own troubles and doesn’t need to add this cowboy to that list. When Ryder gets involved in that fated card game, it’s at the bar where Chloe works. Since Chloe’s father is a gambler she knows how to play and how to win. Ryder’s loss just might be a huge gain for her. Chloe makes a mutually beneficial deal with Ryder – she’ll win back his portion of the ranch that he lost and in return he pays full tuition for the rest of her schooling. Everyone wins. Ah, if only life were that simple.
The Devil Wears Spurs is a sexy, engaging, at times laugh out loud romp that anyone who loves a good romance and a solid story would eat up with a spoon. Ryder’s swagger is such a double edged sword for this guy. On one hand his confidence in his abilities makes him the strong, sexy man that we love to drool over – on the other it gets him into situations that end up to be over his head because he can’t lose, in his mind. I loved Ryder but I also rolled my eyes at him a few times, affectionately. I absolutely adored Chloe. This girl has been through so much in her life and she’s come out a strong woman determined to make her future count. There is a lot to admire in this character. Together they heat up the pages and give us a unique love story that any romance reader would enjoy.
I am definitely looking forward to continuing the Texas Kings series. I love a strong man and it’s a perfect story for me when a strong man finds that perfectly strong woman to stand together. Give this one a shot and you’ll be ready for the next novel when it releases.

The Devil Wears Spurs is the first book in the Texas Kings trilogy, which is a series of books about the three King brothers, Nate, Chase, and Ryder, from Soraya Lane. Ryder King's return to Texas is marred by an overly confident wager while playing poker. Now, he puts his fate in the hands of the very girl who captured his attention at his last rodeo ride--Chloe Rivers. The fact that she may not look like a gambler works to her advantage but she learned the tricks of the trade at her father's side, the same father she no longer wants anything to do with. At the end of their deal, both Ryder and Chloe will walk away with exactly what they want, until things change between them.
This was quite a delightful read, with a story that I've never come across before, one that included something I didn't expect in chapter twenty. Ryder may have initially reminded Chloe of her father, no thanks to that one ill-thought poker bet, but I loved reading about how she was able to see that there was more to him than the privileged risk-taking cowboy he appeared to be. Theirs was a playful but steamy romance, one that had a fair amount of flirtation and frustration on both their parts. These two were a great couple and while they were there to help each other out--Chloe with getting back Ryder's share of the land and Ryder with paying for Chloe's tuition--they were also able to be there to support one another when it came to family issues. This was definitely a relationship that was give and take and one that was based on love and trust and not just on lust.
Aside from giving readers an enjoyable love story between Ryder and Chloe, we're also introduced to the other King brothers and are able to have an idea of their personalities. They're three different men but all share a love for family, especially when it comes to their ailing grandfather. They're also quite protective of non-family members who are welcomed into the fold, such as with the case of Chloe. Based on this first book, I look forward to the next two books in the trilogy and will keep my fingers crossed that Nate and Chase are just as swoon-worthy as their youngest brother Ryder. If you love a good cowboy romance, I suggest you check out The Devil Wears Spurs by Soraya Lane, which I'm giving four stars to. ♥
"Always in the shadow of his over-achieving brothers, youngest brother Ryder fell in love with rodeos as a teenager and soon became the most successful bull and Bronco rider in the state. The ultimate playboy, Ryder likes to party hard, and he often makes bad decisions… including gambling. He's so used to winning that he doesn't hesitate to up the stakes one night, betting more than he can handle—his third of the King Ranch.
Chloe has seen Ryder on the rodeo scene, but she's also noticed him at the bar where she works. She's trying to work to save enough to put herself through college—she completed two years before she had to bail her dad out of a bad debt—losing all her savings in the process. Her father gambled all her life, and she had it tough as a kid, but the one thing she does know how to do is play—and win—at any kind of card game. When she finds Ryder in trouble, she makes him an offer—she will win his ranch back, if he pays her college fees and promises to walk away from gambling, for good. But while she's winning back Ryder's cash, what she doesn't count on is winning his heart."

What I liked from this novel....
I found "The Devil Wears Spurs" quiet interesting as well as captivating that will keep your attention all the way through the story. The readers will find that this author will keep you very entertained as you are reading through this sexy hot read about the two main characters ...Ryder and Chloe. It was interesting how they met at the rodeo with only a look that did it however, it wasn't until Ryder being the risk taker that he was needed Chloe that life for Ryder took on quite a new meaning for him. For Chloe it was that she had a goal to earn enough money for her education and she would do what she had to go to achieve it. The characters were all very well developed, defined and believable giving the reader by the end of the read a good love story. Would what started out as a little blackmail and friendship turn into something else for these two? Well, this is where I say you will have to pick up this read to find out how well this author presents it all so very well to the readers.
4.5 Stars THE DEVIL WEARS SPURS is the first book in the new Texas Kings series, introducing the King brothers – sexy, hot Texas billionaire cowboys! Whew! This should be good!
This book introduces the brothers, but focuses on Ryder King. Ryder is a gorgeous rodeo star that has women falling at his feet. He does have a slight gambling problem, though. You can’t be perfect, right?
Chloe sees Ryder at the rodeo and they connect – but she’s not going to be one of those simpering fan-girls that he’s used to. Nope, not her! She’s playing hard to get. Of course, this just fuels the fire that is already burning in Ryder to get closer to the beautiful Chloe. She’s not answering his calls or texts, which gets under his skin even more.
Ryder is playing in a high-stakes poker game and guess who happens to be the waitress at the poker table? The elusive Chloe! Things couldn’t have worked out better…that is until he lost a huge hand that consisted of him losing the deed to one third of the family ranch. Uh-oh! Now it’s a race against time to win back his part of the ranch before his brothers find out what he did. He’s already in bad favor because he doesn’t embrace the family business, instead of being a rodeo rider. His brothers are concerned about his health. If they only knew what he had done, that would no longer be an issue.
Chloe has more than a little knowledge of the game of poker. Her dad was a card sharp and she was a quick study. She’s going to help him win back his ranch, and he’s going to help her pay off her education. Sounds like a fair trade. Let the fun begin!
The story of these two is a heartwarming one of self-discovery, enterprise and initiative. Their lives initially seem complete opposites but, as the story develops, their skills, emotions and lives interlink more and more. A lovely story set in a fantastic region brought to life by the author. This book is a fun “friends with benefits” story that turns into so much more. You most certainly don’t want to miss this introduction of the King brothers and the women who might be able to tame them. Bring on the next book ASAP!

Soraya Lane begins a sizzling hot trilogy about the uber-wealthy and handsome King Brothers of Texas. The youngest of the brothers, Ryder, left the family’s ranching, land management, etc. behind to rodeo, and he is one of the best there is at riding broncos, groupies and bulls! He is in Texas Rodeo waiting for his next ride when he sees a beautiful woman in the crowd at about the same time she notices him. Chloe and Ryder are staring at each other and grinning like old friends. When Ryder gets thrown off the bull he was on, he finds Chloe in the crowd and asks her to dinner; she says no. This is a shock and a first for the good looking dude. He ends the evening in the back room of a bar playing in a high stakes poker game against a not-so-nice guy named Brent Parker. Ryder is flying high and taking everyone’s money. He notices the waitress serving his table, and lo and behold, it’s Chloe. Parker also notices Chloe and Ryder’s interest, and gets as obnoxious and chauvinistic as possible, which he knows will punch Ryder’s buttons.
Ryder challenges Parker to a quarter of a million dollars round of poker. When he is dealt a fantastic hand, he ups the ante. Parker calls the raise, but wants Ryder’s third of his Texas ranch thrown into the pot against several of Parker’s smaller ones.
Chloe and Ryder have a very push/pull connection. Strangely, Ryder thinks this beautiful stranger could be the one that could rope and brand him, but she sends such mixed signals. Chloe is totally besotted with this cowboy, but he is definitely not in her future. When she honestly believes she can walk away from him, she will give in to the enticement he holds over her. Chloe can help Ryder out of a horrible mess, but she has her price.
Soraya Lane has a smooth style of delivering THE DEVIL WEARS SPURS. Ms. Lane’s writing is skillful and her plotting is clean with just enough twists and temper. This first story in the Texas King series is truly hotter than a blazing six shooter!
This is my second read by Ms. Lane and I love her writing style. I loved every bit that I read but I still had lots of questions that were not answered but no matter what I’m looking forward to reading the next book. The King Brothers are men who command to be listened to and they are fine as heck.
Ryder King and Chloe Rivers were two people that were meant to be but first they both needed to work through their own issues. Chloe did not trust men very easily and she usually ran away. So when she saw him at a Rodeo and he saw her they had this instant connection. Ryder was a bull rider and loved doing anything that required a high but sooner or later that high would come down. But before that happened something that meant the world to him was gambled away and now his brothers and his grandfather were going to kill him. Chloe couldn’t believe what was happening to the King Brother he had just lost something dear to him and she knew that she could win it back. She needed to talk with Ryder and strike a deal if she would win it back from him he had to pay for her college tuition.
So when they end up going to Las Vegas she knew that there was a possibility that she would end up running into her father. Chloe just didn’t know that she would end up seeing people that her father owed money to. She was there to get back on the bang wagon of gambling because she needed to finish her deal. Ryder wanted Chloe and he was not going to allow anyone to harass Chloe. During their stay in Las Vegas they end up getting close and their relationship changes course. They both know something has changed especially when Ryder gets what he lost back. Only he didn’t expect for Chloe to run away from him without a word.
The Devil Wears Spurs was a great read. I love that there was dual POV and the dialogue was entertaining. The chemistry between these two characters was passionate and explosive. They both needed to deal with their issue of commitment before they could have a relationship.
I can’t wait to read Chase King’s book!! Totally recommend this read!!

Ryder King had always felt like he was in his brothers shadows. They had always known their place on the King Ranch while he often made bad decisions, road hard, and sometimes partied harder. Having rode the rodeo circuit since he was a teenager he may have been the most successful bull and bronco rider out there but this final bad decision may have just cost him the one thing that he truly loved and always thought would be there for him when he finally did hang up his spurs.
Chloe Rivers had been saying for years that she would never touch another set of cards but when she saw Ryder lose his ranch, she knew that she had to do something to help him win it back. This wasn’t just for him though, she knew that she could win and it would be her ticket back to law school. Only problem was that they had to go to Vegas for her to practice and there were bigger demons out there than just picking up the cards again. One was losing her heart to a sexy cowboy but another was running into people that may not feel too kindly of her being back in Vegas.
I really enjoyed this story but I kept waiting for something bad to happen and just felt like there was a lot of unfinished business so I’m wondering if things won’t come back to haunt her and Ryder in the stories to come. Other than that, I enjoyed Ryder and his cockiness but I really enjoyed Chloe. She was no push over and not just when it came to playing cards. She knew what she wanted and set out to get it the one way that she knew that she couldn’t lose.
If it wasn’t for the for the fact that I kept waiting for something to happen that never did, I would have honestly given this book five stars but in the end I’m only giving it four because it felt like too many things could have happened that would have made it better but they never did.
I received and ARC from St. Martins Press through Netgalley in return for and honest review.

#1 in the Texas Kings series. And this was a very good start to a western romance series about the 3 wealthy and hot King brothers who share a ranch in Texas. Nate, the oldest, manages the business parts, Chase handles the actual running of the ranch, but Ryder, the youngest really doesn't have a set role so he has become a champion rodeo rider, much to the worry and disgust of his brothers. In a moment of insanity and drunkenness, Ryder bets his portion of the ranch and loses it to their family's sworn enemy. Fortunately for him, the woman serving his drinks claims to be a star poker player and offers to win his ranch back if he'll then fun the rest of her law school tuition. An agreement is made, with no strings attached. But, of course, they also begin a sexual arrangement and fall for each other along the way. But both, especially Chloe, are commitment phobic and don't want to be tied down. I really loved the characters and very much look forward to reading more about the brothers in future stories. Chloe is strong and talented, bringing something a little different to the table with her poker skills. Ryder is talented as a rodeo rider, plus he's big and strong and intelligent and oh-so-sexy. It was interesting to read about the poker games and how a serious player prepares. The one thing I didn't really like was how it all ended up so neatly. I like a HEA, of course, and expect that. But this book went on a little too long, crossing all the t's and dotting all the i's, with little left to the imagination of the reader. So not a bad thing, just a little unnecessary to add so much of an epilogue to the book.
***I received this ebook from NetGalley and the publisher in return for my honest opinions.***
I requested to read this book because it sounded really interesting. Who doesn't love a sexy cowboy?? Granted Ryder is a ladies man, but throughout this book he is obviously intrigued by Chloe. Even from the very beginning he was interested in her because she told him a word he wasn't used to hearing..."No" lol. I loved it!
Skip forward a bit and we aren't enjoying an exciting rodeo, but a card game that at first appears to be a friendly game until all shit breaks loose. Ryder thinking he has a winning hand bets of all things....his families ranch! OMG what the hell is he thinking!:???? When he looses the hand he is devastated and in denial. What will he do? Chloe works in the bar he was just in sees what happens and basically tells him he is an idiot...which I totally agree with!
They make a deal that she will use her knowledge of poker to win back his ranch. They go on an adventure for her to get ready for the game and they are having to pretend they are together as a couple. Obviously when you take a sexy cowboy and a good looking lady you are going to get some chemistry lol. There are some really steamy scenes and at times I was fanning my face. Whoowee Ryder is a sexy man I'll tell ya lol.
I won't tell you anything else about the book, but Ryder has some seriously HOT brothers that I personally cannot wait to read about lol. Overall this book was a cute and good read that I have rated in at four stars. I look forward to more by this author!
Ryder has an ego the size of Texas. As the top rodeo rider in the state, he is used to always winning and isn’t afraid to up the states when he wants something big. Unfortunately, he gambles away his part of the family ranch. He meets Chloe at a rodeo and is intrigued by the girl that won’t say yes. Chloe is trying to make enough money for her tuition and doesn’t have time for anything fun. But, she feels sorry for Ryder and offers to help him win back his ranch…for a price.
Ryder is very full of himself and doesn’t take no for an answer. I didn’t really like his character at the beginning, but he grew on me. Chloe is so full of sass and attitude – I LOVED IT!! After being hurt one too many times by her own father, she doesn’t take any crap from anyone. I really liked the dynamic of Chloe helping Ryder out of a tough situation. It’s much different than the hero saving the heroine’s day. The story was sweet, fun, and funny at times. The trip for Vegas brought out strong emotions for Chloe and Ryder’s response was great. I adore these two together.
This story also sets up the rest of the series. The rest of the King family is on that has had some tough times, but they came out together in the end. Having been raised by his grandparents, they taught Ryder and his brothers about running the ranch and what it means to be family. I can’t wait to read more of this series and get to know the brothers even better.

This book was a perfect example of why I love Cowboy stories!
Ryder is your typical sexy, self-assured, drop dead gorgeous Rodeo Rider, the youngest of three brothers and born into family wealth; so he should have everything a man could ever want. But when his ego and a life long feud get in the way of common sense, a devastating loss forces Ryder to join forces with a woman who refuses to warm his bed, to regain his pride.
Chloe went to the Rodeo with her friend to let her hair down and have a bit of fun. But the moment she locks eyes with the incredibly handsome Cowboy across an arena, she fears she is lost. Chloe knows the seedier side of life, and is not prepared to be used or become anyone’s plaything; but seeing the desolation on Ryder’s face after making the biggest mistake of his life, pulls at Chloe’s heart-strings.
A business plan is forged that if successful will provide a satisfactory result for all concerned; but at what cost? And can Ryder and Chloe deny their mutual attraction, and refrain from mixing business with pleasure?
The storyline is well developed, with a strong, independent cast, captivating scenarios, a modicum of drama, and beautifully written HEA.
This is my first read of Ms Lane’s, but she definitely has a new fan, and I hope the sequel isn’t far away. Bravo to Ms Lane on a fabulous new series!!!
4.5 Stars Sexual Content: Sensual Language (Profanity/Slang) Content: Mild Violent Content: Minimal
Ryder King left behind his family's riches to make his own way as a rodeo star. He is now back as the national Bull Rider Champion. His family wants him to return to the ranch and his rightful place in the King family. The ranch is divided three ways among him and his 2 brothers.
One night in a drunken poker game, Ryder lost his part of the ranch. How can he even face his brothers or his grandfather?
Chloe, a barmaid that was a witness to the loss, offers him a solution.... she will win the ranch back but he will then have to pay her remaining tuition in law school. What does he have to lose except maybe his heart?
Ryder and Chloe must work closely together for the plan to work. The closer they become the harder it will be for both to walk away when their heart intact.
I wanted to hate Ryder because he was a cocky billionaire playboy that had everything but he was also a southern gentleman which I find hard to resist. He was protective of Chloe even though she resisted the idea. He was always there when she really needed him.
Chloe was a survivor, thought she needed no one.
The author was descriptive of scenes and characters. I watched the book happening before my eyes.
The Devil Wears Spurs by Soraya Lane begins with a gamble that sets my heart racing. While Chloe and Ryder scorched the pages when they are together, I must admit that it is the future of the family farm that kept me reading on way to late. I just had to know how it all worked out. There is so much other clouding this issue that it is by no means a given on how it will all turn out for the Kings.
Ryder King came off to me as first as an overly arrogant cowboy; more brawl than brains. As the story continued clearly he is a more complex man than my first impression, but still he does have some lines he uses with Chloe. Chloe is clever, cunning and full of country sass; never allowing Ryder to get by with any of it. No wonder, Ryder falls so hard for her. The King family dynamics add to the appeal of the overall plot.
In spite of the family farm being at stake this is a fun, flirty read. Having the same feel as the Ocean Eleven movie, only better since it is the cowboy honest version, no heist, just winning fair and square.
