The Bennet Gang Duology #2

Gentlemen of Honor - Book Two of the Bennet Gang Duology: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
VOLUME TWO of The Bennet Gang Gentlemen of Honor

Elizabeth Bennet is giving up her secret life as a highwayman in favor of her next great adventure...being courted by Fitzwilliam Darcy. But when new guests arrive at Netherfield Park, they bring danger and tumult with them. Can Elizabeth and her sisters contend with the evil Hargreaves while still successfully navigating matters of the heart, or will they be forced to choose between love, honor, and family?

Fitzwilliam Darcy is enamored with Miss Elizabeth Bennet. Unfortunately, making her mistress of his beloved estate, Pemberley, would require embracing a scandal that could ruin the Darcy name. If he could make her see that she must give up her mad ways, she could be his. That is their only recourse, their single path to happiness, because it couldn't possibly be the case that he needs to change.

Gentlemen of Honor is the high-stakes conclusion to The Bennet Gang Duology. This fast-paced, action-filled Pride and Prejudice Variation finds your favorite characters faced with all new reasons to be uncertain in love. If you take delight in Summer Hanford's distinct, entertaining tales, enjoy Gentlemen of Honor today.

Summer Hanford writes gripping Epic Fantasy, swashbuckling Historical Romance, and best-selling Pride and Prejudice retellings. She lives in the Finger Lakes Region of New York with her husband and compulsory, deliberately spoiled, cat. The newest addition to their household, an energetic setter-shepherd mix, has been trying, and failing, for six years to gain acceptance from the cat, but is adored by the humans.

Since the moment she read her first novel, Summer’s passion has always been writing. As a child growing up on a dairy farm, she built castles made of hay and wielded swords made of fence posts. She is also passionate about animals, travel, and organizing her closet. Nothing pleases her more than a row of tops broken down by sleeve length and ordered by color…except working on her latest novel with her cat in her lap, her dog lounging on the rug dreaming of squirrels, and a cup of tea at hand.

As much as I enjoyed the book that preceded this in The Bennet Gang series, this was even better!

The stakes are higher here, with the lives of Elizabeth's young half-brothers, Thomas and Matthew Oakwood, at risk. Lord Franklin and his sister are the horrible Hargraves, who quickly arrive after hearing from Caroline Bingley that their missing cousin may have been Mrs. Oakwood's second husband. With an earldom at stake, their motive is definitely suspect. Their younger brother, Nathan, is with them and doesn't seem as snooty, but can he be trusted?

Darcy and Elizabeth, although very much in love by now, are at odds over the Boney Bandits. Regardless of the end results, he sees their activities as indefensibly lawless. With no warning, he heads to London to think things over, leaving Elizabeth deeply disappointed in him as well as broken-hearted.

Lydia gets an even meatier role than in the first book. She chafes at being treated like a child (in this P&P universe, she is NOT out in Society). Curious, observant, and quick-witted, Lydia maneuvers herself into the middle of the action here.

The wonderful, fast-paced plot completely engaged my interest and emotions. This author demonstrates her storytelling skill on every page.

Content is clean.

Loved both volumes enough to purchase after reading them through Kindle Unlimited.

A little more Lydia

We see much of book two through the eyes of young Lydia. Not yet out, she practically idolizes her older sister Elizabeth.

When a new bad shows up in Meryton curtesy of Miss Bingley, the Bennets, Bingley and Darcy are in for a bumpy ride.

I really enjoyed the little switch ups in character and personality for some of the Canon characters. It allows for changes in the way relationships are built too.

Rbout a half a minute I nearly put it down, when it seemed like Darcy was going to be a complete coward, but I persevered and Darcy did too!!

Great story telling. A little different. It was fun seeing our dear girls being so fierce.

A Page Turner!

I have to first say I disliked the fact that the end of almost every chapter was so exciting you wanted to go on to the next chapter. How is anyone going to get any sleep when it is written like that?

But seriously, Book Two of the Bennet Gang Duology is exciting. I was a little surprised at the 'gentlemen of honor' because they accomplished so little. The dishonorable one, and his sister, play a much more prominent part, as dastardly as that is. But the gentlemen of honor fulfill their important but small roles quite well.

Don't start this in the evening. A weekend would be best! Well written and edited.

So very well crafted. The story is rich and original. I enjoyed a realistically portrayed Darcy who thought things through and exorcised his doubts.
Many people will love that the Bennet women were the real heros and that Richard had a role to play.
Have a good time reading this, it is very well written and the grammar was excellent. You say 'who cares' but it makes a good story great and unambiguous to read. This was an excellent book and even better than part one.

page turner!

Do not read this super fun book without first reading book one- you will thank me later!

I won’t post spoilers here, but will say this was a fun set of books with a lovely HEA for our favorite characters and a few new characters we get to know. Some of well known characters get quite the fun makeovers and these books are action packed. If you like sweet angelic ladies who sit around drinking tea, this one is not for you. However if you can suspend canon a bit and enjoy a different set of skills for our dear Bennet ladies, you are in for a treat!

This second in the series was full of angst, which I love.

Jane and Mary become engaged and promise their fiancés that they will give up any participation in the Boney Bandits and so, when Darcy is courting Elizabeth, he wants the same promise from her. While she gives that, later in this story she finds a real need to take up her weapons again. (I won't give away why.)

Caroline's invitation to the Hargreaves is accepted and we find very quickly the lives of the Bennet sisters' half-brothers in jeopardy. Matthew is on the edge of death. Thomas disappears... kidnapped? There is a cure for the poison Matthew ingested but getting hold of that is part of the angst here. Colonel Fitzwilliam takes part in that effort.

Lydia's presence is a large part as she now finds her "favorite" sister, Elizabeth wanting to train the younger sisters as she, Jane and Mary have been trained.

I highly recommend both of these stories.

Normally the first book is better, but in my opinion, it is definitely not the case here. This book is a breath taking finale.
Mary and Jane are both engaged but Darcy has a hard time accepting Elizabeth being part of the Bennet gang.
The Bennet sisters two younger half brothers are heirs to an earldom without their knowledge. Unfortunately Caroline Bingley wish to uncover Jane’s noble connections and thus stirs up an hornet’s nest.
There is a very good reason why General Oakwood has kept his heritage hidden, because his family is known for their bloodthirst. It being the norm to kill to get the title of Earl.
So the current heir to the earldom will do all in his power to keep the brothers from being discovered.
Of course the Bennet gang and their suitors will do anything to protect their brothers. Luckily Darcy stepped up and support’s Elizabeth and Coronel Fitzwilliam also joins the cause.
I will not write more, not to reveal too much, but I highly recommend the book.

This duology is just terrific -- highly original, well-written and a real page turner. They are so good I would have enjoyed a third volume, focusing on Lydia's story and indicating why Kitty deserved her happy ending.

This review is for both books.

Again, Ms. Hanford has provided a thrilling and intense tale to delight all of P&P fandom.
This tale, spanning the two books, is detailed and intriguing. I love tales where the Bennet sisters are not simpering misses only bent on securing husbands - that’s Mrs. B’s job! Although it always seems like one of them ends up silly and stupid. Even in this case, the one that is silly and stupid does not end up so.
I have only one nitpick with the story, is that the Boney Bandits did not fully use all their skills to obtain the information they required to save their younger brothers. I will take it up with the author with details.
However, over all, this is a series you don’t want to miss.

Wonderful Duology (review of both volumes, spoilers)

From a disconcerting start to Book One, where we see Jane and Elizabeth, in their male guises of Enaj and Azile, the Boney Bandits, rob an unsuspecting pair of men (Bingley and Darcy, of course) visiting the Meryton area, we gradually learn the three eldest Bennet sisters are indeed a modern-day Robin Hood and his Merry Men, enabling the local populace to survive by robbing the rich to anonymously support the poor. And poor they all are due to a horrendously awful Mr. Collins, who rules over the area.
There are lots of extra characters, a great deal of peril, and much deviation from canon. But through it all, the characters' essential natures, the pride, and the prejudice are intact, and a HEA for everyone who deserves it is achieved.
Very well done variation!

4.5 stars rounded up to 5. In this second part of the Bennet Gang variation on Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy has finally received Elizabeth Bennet's consent to a courtship at the end of the prior book, but he is no longer certain he wants to court her, since realizing that she and her sisters are the "Boney Bandits," a trio of highway robbers who, albeit they behave like Robin Hood by giving their loot to the needy, are nevertheless criminals and behaving badly for ladies of the gentry. He can't condone such behavior, can he? He decides he must warn Bingley, who has been courting Jane Bennet, but learns that Bingley already knows, and is not bothered by it, as long as Jane leaves that life behind her when they marry.

This leaves Darcy in a quandary, caught between his affections and his sense of right and wrong. But rather than confront Elizabeth about it, he leaves for London. Elizabeth is left wondering what happened to cause him to leave, and Bingley is too polite to explain. But she can guess, and it angers her, so much so that she wants to find a way to confront Darcy, so she arranges to visit London and stay with her aunt and uncle, the Gardiners, for a time.

Meanwhile, the Hargreaves, relatives of Mrs. Oakwood's two young sons, are scheduled to arrive for a stay at Netherfield Park, invited by Miss Bingley. The Bennets/Oakwoods are concerned that they mean no good, and that if young Thomas is indeed heir to an earl, he's in danger from these people.

This book is every bit as exciting as the first in the duology, but there is little humor here, and I do question Elizabeth choosing the moment she does to follow Darcy to London, knowing the Hargreaves are on their way. Still, it's another adventure, and even with some child endangerment and violence, it manages somehow to be a lighter weight adventure story that includes quite a bit of romance. Later I question Colonel Fitzwilliam's choice. Why, why, why? But I love this version of Lydia Bennet.

Fun and exciting

This book takes up immediately from the conclusion of book one, which you must read in order to understand anything in this book. This is NOT a standalone story. Darcy now knows the truth about Jane, Elizabeth, and Mary Bennett, Mr William Collins has been dealt with, and Darcy has told Elizabeth that he wants to enter a courtship. Circumstances arise involving Elizabeth's two young stepbrothers and their corrupt cousins, the cousins threatening to harm Elizabeth's brothers. Eventually Elizabeth's specials skills are needed, and Darcy objects, making him unsure about choosing Elizabeth for a future wife. Darcy has to do a lot of soul searching, while trouble sharply escalates in the Bennett/Oakwood home. Lydia begins training with Elizabeth, and her adventurous spirit gets her deeply involved in all of the mayhem.

Summer Hanford is a wonderful writer and a superb storyteller. The action is fast moving and exciting, and the romance is lovely. As was the case for book one, you must suspend belief and just go with this premise, and be prepared for a wild ride. I deducted a star because I object to the disposition of our beloved Colonel Fitzwilliam at the end of the book. He gets engaged to a character who is portrayed throughout both volumes of the story as cruel, spoiled, vain, and completely bratty. Say it ain't so!! I wanted a comeuppance for this character and instead she's rewarded with the colonel. Badly done!

Nonetheless, the book is very well written and well edited. I recommend it highly for a swashbuckling, fast paced, fun tale.

Its a fitting end to an amazing story. Darcy is so unsure. The struggle Darcy goes through shows his original upbringing, the set ideas on how Ladies should behave and what he sees and admires in the Bennet sisters . How he is sticker of rules so later how difficult it is for him to break that thought when all options fail. He needs the Hunsford style set down to come to his senses though here Elizabeth does the work with a single statement.

Elizabeth and Lydia shine in this book. How they work to save their brothers and the decisions they take are laudable. In the end even miss Bingley shines

The Hargreaves are truly snakes except Nathan and they truly are Evil personified

What i fail to understand is how come when everyone at home knows their is a threat to the 2 young master Oakwood's, how there is so lax security for the boys. this is even after the first attempt is already been made

that's the only point i could find to criticize. I highly recommend this book series for Pride and prejudice enthusiasts

Book Two Review

This was an entertaining read. I’ve highlighted the small details I appreciated about this story that set it apart from the many other variations of Pride and Prejudice:

- It doesn't follow the typical P&P storyline (Meryton to Rosings, then to Pemberley, and back to Meryton).

- Hanford's portrayal of Caroline Bingley feels more in line with how Austen's Caroline could have been developed. I’m glad this version of Caroline isn’t over the top.

- Lydia and Elizabeth take center stage in book two. I enjoy stories where there is a sisterly bond between Elizabeth and Lydia or where Lydia looks up to Elizabeth. With the right influences, Lydia is most likely to become like Elizabeth. Mary isn't too far behind.

- I appreciate that Hanford chose a different direction for Lydia. She was also able to find a young beau and marry him later in life.

- Connections to the peerage through Mrs. Bennet is always a plus.

A great second book to finish the story. I liked Darcy’s growing strength of character as he learned to become a true match and partner for Elizabeth. I also adored how strong Jane, and especially, Mary were in these books. Lydia was also admirable and found the strength to assist and make good decisions even though she was not totally included in the sisterhood.

It is revealed that young Thomas Oakwood (the eldest of the two brothers of the Bennet sisters) is the secret heir to his grandfather, an Earl. His cousins, of which the eldest is currently the Viscount and heir presumptive, is not willing to cede that position to Thomas. He has poisoned Matthew, the youngest Oakwood boy, and kidnapped and threatened to kill Thomas. When the law is not on their side what can the Bennet sisters do to save their young brothers? Will the Boney Bandits ride again?

My Favorite Summer Hanford Book!

What a delightfully fun and intricately woven story this was! I loved the interactions between Darcy and Elizabeth (some really delicious scenes). I also loved how each star had their own unique skills, talents, and role in their “gang.” Something I really appreciated was that the author didn’t shy away from the struggle Darcy would feel about the “Bandits,” with their Robin Hood-like mission conflicting with his abhorrence of disguise and his desire to follow the law. While I didn’t always agree with (or like) Darcy’s choices, they made sense for the character and his journey.

I’ve read a lot of good books by this author, and this is definitely my favorite! 10/10!

A very good sequel to our lady bandits

Elizabeth, Jane and Mary are to the rescue again and their siblings and loves are mixed in as well. I enjoyed reading of the siblings’ trainings and of the adventures the ladies attacked with gusto. I really enjoyed both of the well crafted stories. I’m only sad that the story has come to an end.
I will be checking out other books by Ms. Hanford.

A brilliantly executed duology.

A was reluctant to read these books as I thought the premise one step too far, but a 5 star review convinced me otherwise. I’m so glad I did. It’s a rollicking tale, until it isn’t. Vol 2 has a higher level of angst. I loved the superb characterisations, the strong roles for the women, the role Lydia plays, and the romances that, in some cases, reconcile enemies. The writing is excellent. Highly recommended.

wow! Book One was so fantastic, and I sort of just expected more of the same. Yes and no! Book Two was even more riveting than the first! Lydia plays a bigger role in this part of the duology, and she is so refreshing! There are all the elements of mystery, intrigue, greed, distrust, honor, and love heaped onto the Bennet gang, What fun to read!

Darcy’s Decision?

Darcy figures out the Bennet Sister’s secret and he runs! Elizabeth won’t take this decision lightly. She finds a way to confront Darcy, but then discovers her family is in trouble and needs her. Darcy offers to take her back home and tries to apologize to Elizabeth and help her family. Loved this new twist on the story. May the Bennet Gang live in infamy!

As a variation this is one of my favorites. Well moved away from the original storyline you still can love the characters you always knew, but enjoy the world only Austen could create. Plus little lines that hum of her original phrasing without quoting.

I loved both volumes very much. Wonderful villains. I felt sorry for Darcy, bumbling around. See, you (Hanford) made them seem like real persons. When I’m looking for a book and I see Hanford or McMann and Hanford, I don’t even have to read the blurb, because I know it will be good!
