Packed with fun facts about the Arctic, polar bears, sea ice and the melting ice caps, this thrilling adventure is perfect for young listeners.
This is the last book in the series that our library has, and I don't love these enough to purchase. But they have been super fun, if a bit unrealistic. We love the teamwork aspects, the science and discovery, finding the hidden objects in each book, and especially the quiz at the end.
I have just discovered a new series of book - the 'Secret Explorers' books.' I hope that my husband buys a few more of these.
The book is about a group of chidren from many countries of the World who come together to help solve problems.
The children in this book:
Kiki - she is from Ghana.
Tamiko - the Dinosaur Explorer
Leah - the Biology Explorer
Ollie - the Rainforest Explorer
Gustavo - he is from Brazil and is the History Explorer
Cheng - the Geology Explorer
Roshni - the Space Explorer
Connor - the Marine Explorer
For each book there is a mission and two of the Explorers go on that mission. This mission was to the Antarcic. Helping to save a shi that got stuck in ice and saving a scientist are part of what the two Explorers - Kiki and Connor do.
Two of the team travel to the Arctic circle to help a stranded ship and locate a missing scientist. They even get closer to a polar bear than most would prefer. I appreciate how King interweaves informative text with the story, and then includes more facts at the end of the book. Naturally, the two do find and rescue the scientist and figure out how to save the ship as well. Easy to follow text for mid to upper elementary level readers.
Read aloud to my son whose interest waxed and waned. The moments of peril, especially involving a polar bear, excited him, but there were a number of slow moments that weren't heightened by the environment, given it's just a bunch of ice.
