Sovereign Duty by KrisAnne Hall

I recently finished reading Sovereign Duty by KrisAnne Hall. I have been listening to her podcast and radio show for the past few months. She was recently on CSPAN-2, where they broadcast one of her lectures, and after seeing the presentation, I went online and ordered the book!

KrisAnne Hall is a very passionate speaker. I found myself reading paragraphs with her voice in my head, and emphasizing words the way she does on her radio show. The book is written in her voice, and flows like a lecture. As I read, I felt I was sitting in a classroom and being presented with all these new ideas and history of the United States I hadn’t heard before, or had forgotten over time.

Hall quotes the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and The Federalist Papers, numerous times through the book to give reference to her statements. She repeats the following quote enough times in the book, for me to pick up on the repetition.

“That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.” (pg. 50, Sovereign Duty)

This quote is actually paragraph 6 of the Declaration of Independence. (there is an extensive citations list at the end of the book). Hall emphasizes the rights of the States over the Federal Government. The book is a long call to arms for the American people to realize they are letting the Federal Government control too much. To remind us that the power lays in the hands of the people and the States, not the central government.

Hall discusses the 9th and 10th amendment in the book. In reviewing the 9th amendment she states, “It is the Natural Right to have the authority to protect Life, Liberty, and Property. Government doesn’t give you those rights; you possess them by the nature of your very existence.” (pg. 58, Sovereign Duty). Her emphasis on ‘Natural Rights’ is throughout the book and drives the point home that these rights are not bestowed on you by a government, but are your rights just by being born human on this planet.

Part 1 of the book is a history of the U.S. and interpreting the founding fathers’ writings. There is a chapter on the “constitutional Sheriff” that enlightened me to the oath a sheriff takes as opposed to the police officers in my county. I suggest picking up the book if not for just this chapter, and how you can work with your local Sheriff to make sure that you and your county are protected, “from all unlawful acts; even when those unlawful acts are by the government itself!” (pg.73, Sovereign Duty)

Throughout the book, Hall gives recommendation of other books, and websites to explore for you to continue your education. She also has a set of books for young adult readers to educate them on the history that may not get in their typical education. The author is a passionate Constitutional Patriot, and it is evident in her writing. This book reminds us that the original source of power in this country is, and always has been, in the People and the States, not the federal government, which, over time, has grown far beyond it's defined limits and powers that were delegated to it by the People and the States in the Constitution. The author shows us that, in the beginning, we were, and still are, independent and sovereign States that joined together under a contract/compact and created a common, limited central government. It is the duty of the States and the People to keep all 3 branches of the federal government in check, not just 1 or 2. Sometimes the People need reminding.

KrisAnne Hall is an attorney, a former Florida Prosecutor, and now a teacher of the US Constitution. She addresses current issues from the perspective of how the Constitution addresses the issues. This book is her opus. It explains the framework for putting state of our country back in order through our laws.
