A constellation guidebook focusing on Ojibwe Star Knowledge. Greek constellations and astronomical objects of interest are included along with the Ojibwe constellations organized by the four seasons and north circumpolar stars. Written by four native authors: Annette Lee, William Wilson, Jeff Tibbetts, Carl Gawboy. Accompanies the "Ojibwe Giizhig Anung Masinaaigan" - Ojibwe Sky Star Map created by Annette Lee, William Wilson, and Carl Gawboy.
So fascinating. Why are we following Roman and Greek constellations when we live in North America. Interesting to learn Anishnabe names and teachings for the same stars, passed down by elders. Going to teach this to the kids when we’re at the cottage.
Nearly perfect, exactly what I was looking for, exactly what it says on the tin. I do wish there was a larger printed star map that encompassed a full two pages, though, just so that it's easier to see, or a fold-out or something. Minor complaint for a fantastic book, though. Same problem with both the D/Lakota and Ojibwe star map books like this, so this review will be posted to both.
This concise book is excellent for any researching Ojibwe culture and constellations. It often cites Western culture examples to orientate readers, and offers insight into why different Ojibwe tribes use different names for the same thing. Lots of colorful illustrations too. Overall, a great resource and kudos to the four authors!
Beautifully illustrated, very sparse in text. Full of tantalizing snippets of information but if you're looking for detail or depth you'll need to look elsewhere.
