Then it’s all right here!Hi, I’m James Atkinson - Jim to my friends and readers. I am also more than happy to answer any questions so please feel free to drop me a message.
I’m a qualified personal trainer and fitness coach who loves to help others reach their fitness goals.
I have been training for over twenty years. This training has taken me from long distance running to bodybuilding competition.
It is fair to say that I have learned the secrets of weight loss and fitness from my own personal journey. There is a lot more about me and my career over at my website – jimshealthandmuscle.com so I won’t bore you with it here. :-)
So this book is all about fitness for the beginner. Believe me; I can empathise with the beginner!
There is so much contradicting information out there today that it will confuse the training newbie to a point that it will actually kill any motivation and stop a goal in its tracks.
This is why I wrote this book, If I happened to be a beginner to fitness, overweight, recovering from an injury or unhappy with my body in any way and I know what I know now, this 6 week routine is exactly what I would do to start me off!
Good luck and remember that I am always happy to help where I can so feel free to give me a shout if you need more info.
This is a down to earth easy to follow guide to getting into shape. It isn’t just about exercise but is a program that goes over six weeks and includes the motivation and lifestyle necessary to begin and carry through the program. The exercises are composed of cardiovascular and resistance training but the bonus is that you can do the exercises without bands as well as with them. So if you don’t have exercise bands don’t let that be a hindrance to beginning to get in shape and to get your mental attitude in a state to be fit. The motivational statements that were designed as downloadable signs to post to keep yourself moving forward and motivated were motivational without even beginning the program!
It’s not just exercise that the book covers. It’s a lifestyle; as diet and attitude are touched on as well. If you are looking to improve your life through an easy to follow fitness program – this is the book for you.
This is a wonderful book for anyone that wants to get in shape and an even better one for someone who doesn't know how, because this book will tell you and show you in very detailed explanations and photos so you get the movements right.
As I decided to change my life for the better 6 months ago and started eating keto , I was already down 50 pounds when I started and in only 2 weeks, you can see the difference that the programs makes in my body shape and definition! With this and the new way of eating I will be at my goals soon!
I read this book from start to finish and while following this program read the follow up book from cover to cover too.
He doesn't start off telling you to spend a fortune in equipment, and all you really need are resistance bands and an exercise ball; which means this is an affordable way to start. AND he has a follow up book that I bough that I will move right into when my 6 weeks are done!
May Not Be for Total Beginners or Those Who Are Weak
In general, I think this is a well-put-together book for beginning to work out at home. There are definitely some issues, unfortunately, for the true beginner, which I will get to in a bit. If you plan to follow the book, you will need to buy handled resistance bands and an exercise ball. Over half the book, despite the subtitle that states that the book is about a 6-week exercise program, is more about general information about exercise, healthy food, and motivation as well as introductory essays on resistance and cardio training. You can tell that the author knows his subject well and can appreciate problems that those who do not exercise regularly may have when starting a program like this. I particularly liked the motivation section with actual quotes that you could write down on a piece of paper and stick up around your house. Some do not apply just to exercise but to other parts of life as well. Loved the one about your comfort zone.
I did have a few issues with the book. In the 6-week workout section, it would have been helpful if, at least for the first few weeks, there were mini pictures next to the names of the exercises he wants you to do. All the exercises, with full photographs, are in the back of the book. This is definitely awkward for an ebook, as flipping back and forth between locations is not as simple as it is with a physical book. A visual reminder of each exercise could quickly bring it back to mind, especially in the early weeks.
The other issue with the book is that I do not think that the 6-week plan would work for those who are true beginners or are out of shape. I will admit that I was shocked that for Week 1, he recommended walking one mile for exercise. One mile is a pretty long distance for someone who is just getting into fitness. I remember when my mother was diagnosed with diabetes and started an exercise program; she was lucky to make it to the next house when she first started, and it took her a few days to be able to walk around the block, let alone an entire mile! I say: start where you're at and keep pushing the boundaries within reason. I also thought that some exercises used in the beginning weeks could possibly be problematic for those who are weak—particularly the triceps exercises, as I thought they could easily land someone with a thump on the ground and very sore shoulder and upper arm muscles, if not injured ones.
So I can only recommend this book with reservations. I think the front introductory material is excellent for beginners, but know your limits for the actual 6-week workout and do not press yourself so far that you get injured or want to quit because even his seemingly minimal standards may be too much for you.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Home workout for beginners, 6 week fitness program by James Atkinson Intro about what regular exercise and a balanced diet can lead to a heathly lifestyle. Bonus offer by signing up for the authors' recipes. Has a list of things you will need-nothing that cost a lot of money. Shows photos of things mentioned. Essential elements and a health check to make sure you're ready. Has section on what foods and not to skip meals and drink lots of water among other suggestions. Examples of good motiviational postit's are included. Explains more about the different types of training in the book and why you should use them and how. Love clor photos of exercises and words used to explain how they are done-so important to do them right. Love that you can do alternative exercises if you can't do the ones mentioned in the book and the author explains why. Other resources available to help with fitness and exercise motivation as this is only for beginners to get started with. Like ending parts where exercises are shown in color photos along with how to do them. Motivational challenges are also discussed. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end along with 'about the author'.
Jim has a direct, sincere approach to both newbies and those getting back to restarting a workout program. His approach is definitely doable for young, old and everyone in between. He genuinely cares about helping us be successful. He goes a step beyond expectations by responding to email directly in a very timely manner. I found both this book and Home Workout Circuit training informative, helpful and they got me “off the couch” and back to enjoying working out. Thanks Jim for giving me the knowledge necessary to improve my life.
I have access to a gym (military) but there are days when I cannot go (it is a 10-minute drive and someone borrowed my car, or it is icy out on the road) so I thought, hey I will check this book out and guess what! It is fabulous and means that I can do a workout every day even when I cannot get to the gym. Great information, excellently written and I can do it at home!!!

This book spends a lot of time going over the basics of what you need in the way of equipment (not very much), and the mindset you will need to keep going with the exercise system. It starts at an easy level and increases what is required for each week.
If you can keep up the motivation, or restart if you needed to stop, this book can provide what you need to take the first steps for a fitter you.

This is a great book that starts nice and easy for people like me! Having the book to read and follow helped with my motivation as it isn’t written in a condescending manner, it’s written in a way that I can believe the author actually does want me to follow the program and build a healthier life for myself.

A nice way to begin a new fitness program. Easy to follow with step by step instructions. The equipment is minimal if you are a tight budget this is a plus. Very motivating.

I also understand the meaning of the mind set. But like you say, it’s down to the individual to achieve they goal. I found this book very helpful as a steppingstone to get me started and look beyond the finish line to keep pushing as things could change.
This is a well structured workout plan for beginners, does what it says on the tin. But I think some bits just needed a few extra photos, like the list of the exercises having mini photos to jolt your memory, that's what I needed anyways.
