Holiness in Hidden Places

In places you least expected and in faces you've never seen, there are glimpses of holiness, traces of obedience learned through suffering. For in suffering we learn, as Christ did, what it means to obey. In Holiness in Hidden Places, Joni Eareckson Tada provides a lesson plan for the pursuit of holiness and how to recognize it when we find it, a lesson in learning from one intimately acquainted with suffering. In Tada's words, "It is a book about being set apart unto God . . . in a rugged, robust and demanding life whose pleasures and rewards are matchless and utterly superior."

It was the lovely cover of this book that caught my eye while browsing at the bookstore. But since my bookshelf space is limited I replaced it on the shelf and moved on. Then a quiet inner voice whispered, There are valuable lessons for you in that book. I try to listen to these kinds of inner directives so I retraced my steps and picked the book up once more, quickly flipping through it again.

I followed that gentle prompting and purchased the book, and over the next four months I read small portions of the book at a time, easy because the book is formatted into small essays, liberally interspersed with beautiful artwork and illustrations. The author, Joni Tada, is a quadriplegic and has been for over 30 years, yet all the beautiful artwork in the book is hers—lovingly and carefully painted with her mouth. Tada's insights and spiritual writings are personal and profound. I'm so grateful this book came into my life when it did. It's not only lovely to look at, it's also thought-provoking and very moving.

This lovely book was filled with the author's experiences during the years of her life as a quadriplegic and the lessons God had taught her through them. Her amazing pictures and sketches (all done by holding the brush or pen in her mouth) graced every other page. Reading her meditations reminded me to view my life with the right perspective. Hopefully I can remember to do that. Here is a favorite quote from the book: "Suffering doesn't teach me about myself from a textbook, it teaches me from my heart. It will always show me what I love -- either the God of all comfort or the comfort that can become my god."

I nice little inspirational book of stories from the life of Joni Eareckson Tada, about holiness in unexpected places. You almost forget that it is about holiness though, as it mostly vignettes from an life of faith, although also honest life of falling short. Solid for what it is written for, and not meant to go too deep. Nicely illustrated and a beautiful book to gift.

As I read this, I thought it would be a four star book. However, when I got near the end I found two meditations that lifted it over the top.
