Guardian of Heaven and Earth: The Kingdom of Kanbal wasn't as enjoyable as its predecessor for me, though it is hyping me up for the final part of the finale!

I have my own blog now, so please do give it a visit if you're interested in my other reviews :)

───────────────────

Do you ever feel, as you're nearing the end of a journey, that you're ready for it to end, but also don't want it to? This is what I feel at the current time in regards to the Moribito series. I was first exposed to it in its anime adaptation, when I watched it back in 2015. And since then, it's been my #1 anime series with nothing that came close to beating it for me.

7 years is not a very very long time in most contexts, but the weight behind it obviously makes it hit different.

So finally getting the chance to get to this final part of the journey I started with the Seirei no Moribito makes me super excited, while also feeling somewhat bittersweet. Which is probably the more internal reason of why I didn't enjoy this 2nd volume, as much as the 1st.

The political situation of the series has been a big issue since Traveler of the Blue Road, and it hasn't changed one bit in The Kingdom of Kanbal. In fact, it's the complete opposite. Chagum needs allies if he's ever going to save New Yogo and the fact that he's the crown prince instead of the Mikado or the emperor is not making it any easier.

This constant conflict between his duty to his family vs his duty to this people was very enjoyable for me. I could see how much he grew as a character, while seeing how much his mettle is being tested here. Balsa being there with him is the boost he needed to continue to try his best without worrying as much about his safety.

But even then, Balsa is not as young as she used to be. And that right there being one of the things that aren't brushed aside was brilliant. She's still incredibly powerful in both character and battle prowess, but I can definitely tell that the toll is much much bigger than it used to be.

Following the two of them as they went about the ultimate goal of unity against the common enemy was not bad per say and not exactly any different than what I have previously seen in the series. There are also even more added fantastical elements to expand the world, when it comes to Tanda, Shuga and Torogai which are always appreciated. Especially given the added level of danger it always adds to the series.

Ultimately however, I find myself praising this book with a definite "but" at the end of almost every sentence. And I'm not totally sure why, as individually, the elements are fun, the battles are exciting, but maybe because I believe that it didn't work together as well this time in comparison to before?

Could be. Which is an experience I've had with only one series previously to date, though that one ended up being an overall bad experience when it came to my enjoyment.

Thankfully, that doesn't end up happening here. There are many things to enjoy, it just felt a bit weird considering that it's not the level of enjoyment I expected coming into the book. Regardless, I'm still incredibly excited to see how it ends and if the new

English Translation: Guardian of Heaven and Earth
I read the fan translation by Ainikki
This review covers all 3 books, and is copy/pasted on each one.

Guardian of Heaven and Earth is a very interesting set of 3 books. It is not so much 3 volumes of a single book (like Guardian of the God), but a trilogy of books with a continuous narrative that end the Moribito series. It's also more of a quartet than a trilogy, because "Traveler of the Indigo Road" is as much a vital part of the narrative as any of the 3 individual volumes, and The Kingdom of Lota picks up immediately after its events. However you describe and group these books, you are in for a treat.

The 3 books are meant to be mirror images of the rest of the series. The Kingdom of Lota is meant to echo Guardian of the God, narratively and thematically. The Kingdom of Kanbal is meant to echo Guardian of the Darkness, and The Kingdom of Yogo is a direct counterpart of Guardian of the Dream and the original Guardian of the Spirit. Almost every major character from the other Guardian books shows up again and contributes meaningfully to the narrative in some way. It was good to see familiar faces, and it was good to get conclusions to both Balsa's and Chagum's major arcs.

Long and short, Guardian of Heaven and Earth is the way you end a series. It may not be the best story of the Moribito series, but it concludes the series and concludes it well. More than anything, this cements the Moribito series as a classic for all time.
