When my daughter first began to like mermaids there weren’t many mermaid books out there. Hence how we ended up with this one. It’s not really a story, I guess you’d class it as a bedtime story. Each page has a greeting for a different mermaid and a different time of day. There isn’t an actual story or plot, and some of the pages are just totally random and don’t even fit in with the supposed pattern of the story “Mermaids love to blow bubbles!”...ok, but I thought we were doing greetings here? The sentence structure is also strange with subjects and verbs being reversed from the usual pattern (“Good work mermaid, saving the sailor from from the ship wreck.”) the illustrations are ok. They don’t seem to all fit the same style exactly and sometimes look like they could’ve been done by a different illustrator. Fine if you have a super obsessed with mermaids kid or see it at the library, but it’s not one I’d recommend buying.
While I would not buy Good Night Mermaids for Emmett, I would definitely buy it if I had a girl, especially one who liked mermaids. I remember when I was younger, I really liked mermaids and Arial, so this book would have been perfect for me. I thought it was interesting all the different things the authors had the mermaids doing. For instance, they had mermaids riding on dauphins, dancing with an octopus, playing dress up, playing music, and singing a lullaby. There was even a page where the mermaid was pulling a sailor to shore after a shipwreck. I loved how there was also a legend about when the mermaid finds their gem stone, their tail becomes the color of the stone. Overall, I think this book is perfect for any mermaid lovers out there, and I would definitely suggest it as a gift.
Pen and ink illustrations by Mark Jasper. Soft color with pen outline. Great ideas for mermaid activities. Nice dark night cover.

This book gets 5 stars because Bug loves it. She has two other books in the “Good Night” series, but this is by far her favorite. She wanted it read to her so many times that she memorized it the second day she had it.
Follows the same pattern as the other “Good Night” books as it goes through a complete day like a tour, except in this volume it is about mermaids.
I’m not really picky on kids books but this is probably the worst of this “good night xyz” I’ve read. Does not follow any order, no logic or storytelling. Just kind of random things about mermaids per page. Illustrations are pretty though.
Perfect little gift for my fourth child, the Mermaid Warrior, from her Aunt. Not much of a storyline by gorgeous, colorful, and fun illustrations and silly simple statements about mermaid life. Very fun and simple for the littles. Very durable and vibrant little square board book.
Beautiful illustrations but poor (non existent?) storyline and it doesn't read well grammatically - particularly for a kids book. "Howdy, mermaids, going seahorse riding." Far too many commas!
