A woman running on fumes.

Kicked out of my mom’s house at fifteen years old after my dad died, I’m no stranger to hard work, picking up extra waitressing shifts at the diner and every odd job I can find on the side for the last ten years. Yet, no matter how hard I work, I can never seem to get ahead—not when I have endless car repairs, doctor’s appointments, and student loans to repay. My fiancé abruptly ending our engagement after a nasty fight and kicking me out as well is just the icing on the cake, and I’m running on fumes…

That is until one of my regulars at the diner starts leaving me outrageous tips that I haven’t earned simply by refilling his coffee. Considering all the reasons a handsome and successful older man like him should never have looked twice at me, I’m not sure why he’s taken such a bizarre interest in my well-being…or why he follows me, showing up whenever I need help long before I have the chance to call anyone.

A trucker caught up in her whirlwind.

As the largest employer in the region and owner of Berenson Trucking, I have the means to take care of the sweet, exhausted waitress whose whirlwind I’ve been inappropriately caught up in since the moment I laid eyes on her. Yet, no matter how much cash I tip her, she refuses to slow down and simply let me take care of her, and it’s not only because I’m over twice her age.

Knowing my darlin’ will never truly be mine, I keep my distance, watching her night after night from my truck discreetly parked outside her apartment, never letting on how obsessed I am with her. That is until someone starts targeting us, vandalizing our vehicles and my home, and we find out I’m not the only one watching her from the shadows.

No one can protect her better than me.

Which I will.

Even if I end up going to prison for it.

Castaway Whirlwind is the 3rd book in the Big Boys of Berenson Trucking series but can be read as a standalone. Castaway Whirlwind is a full-length, spicy, age-gap romance. Please read the Author’s Note at the beginning of the book before proceeding. Happily ever after guaranteed.

Self note:

I need safety deets. Hey, GR friends! 👋😉

Anyway, based on the author's note, there's OM/OW drama, but there's no cheating between MCs. What kind of drama, though, and how does it play out?

Also, the MCs have a large age gap (27) and it made me a bit wary, that's too much for me. 🫣

But yeah, I'm intrigued, but not enough to make me go in blindly. So....🤷‍♀️

I'm not too sure where I stand with this one yet- I definitely loved the dynamic between Layla and Russell (they were one of my most anticipated couples)! But similarly to the last book in the series, I feel like a lot of the side characters overcomplicated the story and took away from the romance as a whole.

It took me a bit to get into the book, which just came down to personal preference. I'm not the biggest fan of OM/OW drama, especially when one of the MCs has been in a very long-term relationship. That also mixed in with time jumps isn't really a combination that works for me.

To add to that, I did feel like the pacing of this was a bit frustrating? It took the MCs 3.5 years to start pursuing one another after they had met: which on one side I understand contextually; however, looking back on it, it felt kind of unnecessary. It just made me question a lot of things and certain characterizations, especially considering they didn't speak to each other properly once during those first 3 years, despite seeing each other almost daily.

All in all, this definitely wasn't my favourite in the series. I did find myself skimming a lot after the halfway mark, but again, I liked their dynamic. The epilogue was so sweet and well deserved.

Next level damsel-in-distress + caregiver pairing, where the FMC had been taught not to accept help from others and the MMC was gnashing his teeth and scheming when he just wanted to gruffly take care of his woman. 🤣😍

But don’t worry, it’s a May Alder book, so he had a lot of dirty/taboo thoughts too. And acted on them. 😏

The third act was zanier than I expected (it felt like one of those season finales where everyone starts singing and dancing), but the entertainment level remained high! I had a great time reading this one.

When I think about how to review a book, I do like against like. I'm not comparing books from a shifter series with a complicated and well-charted backlore to an historical series. I'm not comparing books that are polished and crafted, with sentences like jewels where a character's evolution is reflected in the punctuation chosen for their POV to one where there are cowboy brothers on a ranch and everyone's POV, male and female, in every book sounds the same and they they are all just vibing along having stories. All these books serve their function. Romance has a lot of genres, for any mood. We can read about Orcs at war, and the next day the struggles of female scientists in the Victorian era, and appreciate both. Which is to say I'm not sure how to review this book.

This corner of Alder's world is populated with young women who met waitressing at the same diner and the (much) older men who all work at the same trucking company who fall for them. Fans of insta-love, highly protective, caretaking men will enjoy these books. There's a lot to like about the universe Alder is writing in now; her characters are blue collar in a genre overpopulated by rich alphas, there's a strong found family of well-developed side characters, and she does a great job of planting seeds of future stories in a way that feels organic. I think she's a really smart writer, and she has found her sweet spot with heat that pushes right up to the boundaries sometimes (and blows happily through them, in some of her other books).

Here Layla is a young woman with a terrible boyfriend who catches the eye of a much older man. He obsessed about her for three years before she breaks up with terrible boyfriend. Then Russell, who has told everyone but Layla about his obession, switches and goes into provider/stalker/full obsession mode. Sure enough, she's into it, HEA. Too bad he never said anything earlier and saved her three years of exhaustion and misery.

The thing of it is, if I squint right, Alder is doing a subversive take on how the generational trauma brought about by purity culture and toxic masculinity hurts men, too. How behavior one might view as romantic, another might view as stalkerish, and obsessive. In fact, Alder has both called out explicitly on page as such. Maybe even the importance of letting people make their own mistakes, and own their own paths, even when we want and have the ability to make things easier. But then my gaze shifts even the tiniest bit, and I wonder how someone who professes to care for someone lets them grind themselves to the bone rather than have an honest conversation and risk rejection. How someone lets the person they profess to love, and have secretly built a life around (without saying a word) will let that person perform [professional] work for them rather than be even slightly emotionally vulnerable. Which is also called out by a character who is a bad guy, but not wrong. "Maybe she didn't start off as a [professional], but you sure as hell turned her into one." To me, it felt a little like she was trying to have it both ways, a knowing wink to a reader like me whose kindle notes are basically sputtering question marks and also a reassuring hand to readers who might appreciate the messages of masculine posessiveness and female docility. And there's no way to look around the fact that extra-judicial punishment is is carried out with tacit approval by all involved several times, if done for Romance Reasons (even when the actual judicial system is working as it should, for once). Is vigilante justice and encouraging police brutality romantic in 2025 of all years? Opinions, as they say, may vary.

If you like her other books in this series, or this genre of romance, then you will probably enjoy this book. Thanks to May Alder for the arc.

This series addition to the MF Berenson Trucking books does not have the charm of the previous two books.
The young downtrodden heroine has serious health issues and is hooked up with a louse of a man. The hook of the series is the hurt comfort provided by the long distance trucker MC’s in each story.
Here, Layla stays with the unpleasant boyfriend for three years after meeting trucking business owner, Russell, who is smitten with her and wants to help her.
I was surprised when the time jump popped up early on, a big one, too. Three years of the MCs not being together. The story did not have the relationship spark and the time jump was an odd literary device.

This is the first books in what feel like forever where I was anxiously waiting for the release. This whole series just hits all of my favourite tropes and this story is no exception. It’s got all the kinks, all the spiciness, all the softness, all the romance, all the big burly older MMC of my dreams. 🥹

I love that we’re getting to a point, where everyone just forms a big family including characters from previous books but also new arrivals. Trace is a hilarious golden retriever character that brought just the right amount of comedic relief 🤌 I was rooting for Layla and Russell since we first met them and I’m so happy they got their happy ending 🥹🥹🥹 13/10 I’ll read this again (and am now starting my patient wait for the next book which I HOPE will have Elliott as the MMC 👀👀👀)

Castaway Whirlwind is Book 3 in May Alder’s Big Boys of Berenson Trucking Series. Like the others, May incorporates real issues that many women can connect with and works them into the plot. Of course, readers will get a steamy romance, a significant age gap, and several spice scenes. But Layla, in Castaway Whirlwind, has struggled with endometriosis. I appreciated May Alder's attention to Endo's impact on Layla’s life. It was realistic. I adore Russell, the pining he did, his support, and how loving this guy was. Things do get dark, but I felt rightfully so. I liked Russell and Layla’s story a lot.

May Alder has gifted us with another installment in her Big Boys of Berenson Trucking series and this whirlwind romance is just as good the rest! This story explores the mysterious relationship we have caught the occasional glimpse of through this series: Russell & Layla.

What can I say about Russell and Layla..besides the fact that they are PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER!! Layla has not had it the easiest in life, yet she refuses to rely on others. She’ll run herself to exhaustion just to make ends meet, and it pains Russell that she won’t let him help her more. Russell is the sweetest man and clearly will always put the needs of Layla above all others. He cherishes her in a way that every woman deserves and I cannot express how in love I am with these two.

Russell is ashamed of the fact he has fallen for Layla when she’s so much younger than him. But he can’t stay away. And when a few extra bumps in the road of life lead Layla and Russell to spend even more time together, he knows he can never let things go back to the way they were. Little does Russell know, this love isn’t entirely one-sided. But it seems Russell may not have been the only one secretly keeping a close eye on Layla…

I cannot wait to view the future whirlwind of love that slams into the lives of the boys at Berenson Trucking!

ARC review.

Layla and Russell deserve their HEA! Layla deals with some heavier real life issues that I’m sure a lot of us can relate too. You see a lot of the characters from previous stories mentioned so it’s nice to see what they’re up to but at times it gets a little overwhelming trying to keep track of everyone plus all the other side characters. Also the spicy scenes were *chefs kiss* !

May Alder is up there amongst my favourite authors, her books are my happy place to go when I just need some smut filled, alpha male goodness.
And boy did she deliver that with Castaway Whirlwind! 😍

If you're fed up with reading books filled with tatted, buff guys. Who's ripped with six or eight packs then look no further than the Boys Of Berenson Trucking.
They are MEN! Pure burly, bulky and beefy men, who are obsessed with their ladies and I am so here for that.

Now this book is the third in the series and features Russell, an older guy (big age gap) who falls in love with Layla.
Russell is just yum! He is absolutely there for his girl and would do anything for her.
Yes, he also likes to jerk his gherkin over her while she sleeps. But who the heck cares! It's hot! 🥵😂
He is just the kindest (OTT) guy and I absolutely adore his character.

Now Layla has my heart.
She has been through so much and I think you need to remember this while reading the book.
Because at times I became a little frustrated with her, then I remembered what she suffered in the past and what she's suffering with now (Layla has endometriosis and fertility issues) and how she grew up with the Dad she had. You then understand why she lets people take advantage of her and treat her badly 😕
And that just made me want to hug her again 💔
She's a strong FMC, she just needed a little help from Russell to realise it.

I don't want to give too much away in my review, I mainly cover my opinion on the books I read.
But I loved this one so much, as I love the others in the series too.

And after reading the Author's Note at the beginning I knew this was going to hit home for a lot of women, even ladies without the same condition as Layla or ladies who have someone treating them like they aren't good enough.
It's heartbreaking to know this is happening.. Every woman deserves a Russell (or a someone with a pure heart) they need to read this book and realise that they can do better, that they do deserve better ❤️

I love that May Alder put that message out there for us. Yeah, it may have been amongst a great story line and some top tier filthy smut from a sexy hairy trucker. But the word is out and again I say, I am HERE for it ❤️

I read it, I loved it. Bring on the next one!

It took me a while to accept that it wasn't Faye and her man's story ^^
It was ok overall, a bit of all over the place and hard to follow who was who in the last chapters.

The best from this series so far!
Layla and Russell had already intrigued me since Goldie and Davis' book. It was all worth the wait because Layla and Russell didn't disappoint me. Their story was so good and satisfying to read. The kinda slow burn, the mild suspense, the found family, the small town, the unhinged characters (especially Russell and Elliott), and the characters' growths were something to look forward for this book.
I loved how the author delivered the kinda hard themes such as infertility, endometriosis, and even mental abuse with such care and sprinkling full of hope. I loved how the main characters and the side characters tackled the heavy themes around them as one.
Castaway Whirlwind, for me, is the best in plot twists, drama, and story deliviring among other May Alder's books I've read.

I am so lucky I got the ARC for this book, and this review 100% reflects my overall experience while reading without sugarcoating anything.
Thank you, Ms. Alder, for the ARC.

You know a book is good when you finish it in just under 12 hrs. So happy I got an ARC copy of this book.

I am a big fan of May Alders book since I stumbled upon The Guardians Angel.

I love this trucker series and I love how much these trucker boys love their woman.

I am so glad Layla got her HEA in the end after everything.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)
🔥🔥🔥🔥.5 (4.5/5 Spice)

Strap in this one is a long one. I've got so many thoughts.

Castaway Whirlwind by May Alder is the third book in the Big Boys of Berenson Trucking series, and without question, it’s my favorite of them all. I have been salivating for this book since it was first announced, and being honored with an ARC was a dream come true. Honestly, this book was everything I wanted and so much more.

Fair warning — this one is heavier than the previous two books. It deals with some serious topics: abusive relationships (depicted on-page for a chapter or two), threats of sexual assault, a significant age gap (MMC is 52, FMC is 25), infertility struggles due to endometriosis, somnophilia (consensual and soft-coded), and murder (off-page). If any of those are triggers for you, please approach with care.

Now, onto the gushing:
Layla and Russell owned my heart in a way the other couples didn’t (and I loved them too!), from the beginning. Like, I remember the moment we meet her in Runaway Whirlwind; I was hooked. Watching her journey — from her arrival at the diner and rocky engagement, to her slow-burn*, years-long love story with Russell — was one of the most satisfying, beautifully paced developments I’ve read in a long time. I would technically consider this slow-burn as it does span three years (if not more).

Layla’s backstory was so raw and relatable. The way the author explored gender norms, transactional relationships, childhood trauma, and self-worth through her lens was incredible. Sometimes in the most innocuous ways, I loved watching Layla learn and grow. Seeing Layla slowly build her independence, her backbone, and her belief that she deserves happiness was genuinely touching. I especially related to her struggle with accepting gifts or help — that deep-seated belief that nothing comes without strings attached or that you have to do something to earn the gift— and it made her eventual healing and openness all the more powerful. I can't tell you how much I felt that.

Steven, while an unpleasant part of the story, was essential to Layla’s arc. Seeing firsthand the emotional abuse she endured made her growth feel earned (even more so having her look back and realize it was abuse.... I was so proud of her!). Watching her thrive under Russell’s unwavering love and care was just… chef’s kiss.

Now, Russell. Oh, Russell.

My man here is down so bad it’s not even funny. Truly, he is the most “ass over tit” in love MMC we’ve seen yet. His low-key (okay, maybe high-key stalker-level) obsession with Layla somehow wasn’t creepy because it was so rooted in genuine love, respect, and the reality that she was off-limits for a long time.

And the way they finally come together (no pun intended)??
Top-tier. A++. 1000/10.

The spice in this book was also everything I could have hoped for and more. Their “Daddy kink” dynamic is beautifully rooted in the traditional caretaker role — not just sexual, but emotional and physical nurturing. Russell worships Layla, takes care of her every need, and adores her in a way that makes my heart grow three sizes. I felt like the Grinch as I was reading it, seriously.

It’s soft, it’s healing, it’s hot — and it fits them perfectly.

The somnophilia element (kink?) was handled so well too. It was consensual, respectful, and served to show just how truly obsessed Russell was, but in a way that was about her comfort and safety first and foremost. Unlike in the other books, this felt incredibly tender, not just sexually charged.

Layla moves from seeing sex as a transactional obligation to embracing it as something she wants and enjoys, setting boundaries and expressing her needs openly. It’s beautiful character growth, especially considering her past. She literally goes from thinking that a stay at home wife/mother/partner should put out, (as in that's their job), to understanding she can say no was beautiful. She realized that it's all about the love and care that you feel for that other person that drives you to want to share that part of yourself with them. It all stems back to how she was raised; it felt so grounded in reality it both broke my heart and loved it at the same time.

There’s technically a soft “breeding kink” at play — Layla desperately wants children, and Russell wants that future with her too — but it’s not the overwhelming, obsessive “breed now” energy you might expect from other characters in the series (looking at you, Wyatt 👀). It felt tender and right for them.

As for Russell’s brand of possessiveness — let’s just say he’s very much in the “touch her and d!e” camp, and I’m eating it up with a spoon. His fierce protectiveness is so extreme and unhinged I was screaming in the best way. He loves her, period. End of story.

I also really appreciated how May Alder depicted chronic pain and endometriosis. While I can’t speak to it personally, it felt thoughtful and sensitive, especially in the way it factored into their sex life. Russell constantly checked in, adjusted, and prioritized her comfort and pleasure, and it made their intimate moments even more special.

TL;DR:
This book was a complete home run for me, if you couldn't tell. No notes. No complaints. Only love.

If you love an emotionally raw, deeply caring, age gap, healing kind of romance with the best down-bad MMC, you need to read Castaway Whirlwind.

And please — shower May Alder with all the praise she deserves because she absolutely killed it with this one.

Listen. I feel like MA’s books, especially in this series, always start out hella strong and then take a nose dive somewhere around the 85% mark. Overall this was pretty good and I mostly enjoyed it. I do think there could have been more depth to this — it did feel only like mid-level deep; we got some depth but it still left me wanting. I did really enjoy Layla’s character - she was super sweet. Also, while I generally really enjoy the Daddy aspect of books like this, the huge age gap (27 years) Layla on ore than one occasion comparing Russell to her father did give me a slight ick. Fingers crossed that Elliot’s story delivers, because it sounds like it’s gonna be awesome.

ARC REVIEW

TROPES:
- Mutual pining
- Age-gap (FMC 25 & MMC 52)
- Rich MMC vs poor FMC
- Daddy kink
- He takes care of her
- She becomes his special maid (trust me on this)
- Endometriosis rep

Sometimes when I discover an author, I immediately know if I like their writing or not, but especially if their writing is better suited for short books. I thought May Alder's writing wouldn't flare well in a longer book, especially since I DNF'd Davis & Dolly's book. However, CastawatyWhirlwind proved me wrong! Her writing flows easily and I feel like it's progressed since I tried Runaway Whirlwind. I'm happy to have given this book a chance and I'll definitely go back and read her other full-length books.

Layla, the FMC, is relatable. The whole worshipping of a parent that deep down is just shitty is something I connect to and I know many other people will. Her way of thinking, of refusing Russell's money without "earning" it, how she handles her endometriosis, really made up her character. I feel bad for her and her story is just heartbreaking. Thankfully, she got her happily ever after with Russell.

Speaking of, Russell, my lordy, I adored him. He's the epitome of "i'll do anything for my woman" as I understand is a recurring theme with Alder's MMCs. He's older, obsessed, protective and only has eyes for Layla long before they even started dating.

What I liked:
- The way Russell stopped cursing for Layla and the way he takes care of her without any second thoughts.
- The SPICE and the daddy kink (blame it on the daddy issues). He's too big for her and she's too small so it makes for frenzey s*x scenes.
- The side characters! They added to the story and I love how quick they were to help Layla and Russell whenever necessary. You learn one thing or another about them and it leaves you wanting to know more about their stories.
- How Layla's past abuse wasn't overlooked and didn't get resolved just because she fell in love. Same goes for her endometriosis, it's very much a part of the story.
- The balance between the spicy scenes the plot. The spice didn't overshadow the plot so everything flowed nicely.

What I didn't like:
- I could be wrong about this (fuzzy brain and all) but the fact that Layla's butthole brother gets off easily after the way he treated Cora, their son and Layla herself. He was kicked out of the house and gone.

Why I think you should read it:
- He goes above and beyond for her safety and her happiness. Even against the law.
- If you like how Jessa Kane's MMCs are obsessed, Russell is the same way! He built her her dream house not long after they first met.
- If you like large age-gaps, daddy kink, supportive friends and MCs who only got eye for each other. This is the book for you!
- He stalks her but it's for her own protection
- The writing is addictive and smooth, you really can't put the book down
- If you like your spice to be mixed with drama, family trauma and the reality of what it's like to deal with endometriosis.

Thank you to the author for providing me with this ARC. I voluntarily leave this review.

ENG/ITA ARC REVIEW

CASTAWAY WHIRLWIND 🧸

ENG
If you're looking for your next comfort reading and you love age gap, a jealous/possessive/protective MMC, a resilient FMC, then this will be one of your favourite!

BLURB
At 25 Layla is working to her limits to have a chance for an operation against the worst of endometriosis. She's always tired and alone... but she doesn't know a very grumpy, very protecting angel is watching her from afar. At 52 Russell is the proud owner of Berenson Trucking. But what he cares the most about is his little darlin', Layla. When she's in real danger, Russell cannot keep to the shadows anymore and he has to show his feelings. Could they be happy together?

I love how May Alder writes her stories: not only the reader gets swept away by the small-town setting, but also by her side characters - who are very bonded friends and family - and the dialogues, a mixture of scorching hot dirty talking and so very sweet statements of forever love.

Russell is the ultimate protector. He's huge, intimidating, grumpy, but also caring and loving towards his Layla, who gradually discovers her true self and feelings while the story unfolds. Couldn't get enough of them and I'm really sad it's finished now! But I can't wait to read about dark Elliott, Russell's brother.

Thank you for this ARC opportunity, May, you're a talented, spectacular author and a very kind soul and I'm happy I found you in this big big world.

Out of the trucking series, this might be my favorite book yet. I loved Wyatt and Dolly, and Goldie and Davis were fine — but Russell?
Wow. We love Daddy Russell.

We caught glimpses of Russell and Layla in the earlier books — he’s the owner of the trucking company, and she’s the hardworking new waitress at Granny’s. I loved how Layla instantly connected with the other girls at Granny’s and became part of that close-knit community.

I wasn’t expecting Layla’s background to be so rough — working herself to death while her sorry excuse of a fiancé took advantage of her.
I really appreciated the way the author handled the time gaps and showed how Russell had quietly watched over her for years. Honestly, he should’ve gotten rid of Steven way earlier.

When Russell and Layla finally started giving in to the tension between them and realizing the feelings were mutual, I screamed with joy.

Steven getting drunk, kicking Layla out, and thinking he had the upper hand? Please. I was so glad he ended up in jail. And I figured out early that he was still trying to torment Layla from prison.

But what I didn’t expect was that the person helping him was the younger sister of the female cop in the story — that twist had me ready for Russell to fulfill his promise and take Steven out for good.

I absolutely love how the trucking boys handle business, and the way Russell almost killed that cop just for talking bad about Layla? Iconic.

And the house Russell built just for them? Perfect.
I loved how accepting his son, Paul, was too — their little family felt so natural.

The only one who didn’t seem to realize how much she was loved was Layla herself.

Russell paying for the IVF treatments and us getting to see them as parents was such a beautiful ending.

Also — the hints we got about his brother Elliott? I need his book next. He’s so mysterious, and I can’t wait to see his story unfold.

Castaway Whirlwind by May Alder – Daddy Dom + Stalker Vibes + a Massive Age Gap = Yep, I Ate It Up

This book? Five stars, no hesitation. And yes, I’m fully aware the age gap is wild (FMC 25 / MMC 52)—like “he’s got a whole AARP membership” wild—but that didn’t stop me from loving every second of this messy, obsessive, over-the-top ride.

Russell is giving full “mine now” energy from chapter one. He’s the richest, oldest, grumpiest, most dangerously soft Daddy trucker in the game. The way he watched over her from the shadows? Terrifying. Tender. Turned me on. May Alder stays playing in the dark, and I keep showing up to eat it.

I agree with the reviewer who said the series is getting formulaic… BUTTTT it’s a formula I like. Young woman in distress. Older man with money, trauma, and control issues. Kinks for days. Insta-obsession. It works. And it worked again.

What I need now? ELLIOT’S STORY. PLEASE. You can’t just tease us with the silver fox mystery and not deliver. I’m invested. I’m already simping for a man I barely met.

Final breakdown:
✅ Huge age gap
✅ Daddy kink (no age play)
✅ Somnophilia
✅ Breeding kink
✅ Stalking & obsession (the romantic kind… barely)
✅ Fertility trauma & hurt/comfort
✅ No cheating, HEA guaranteed

If you like your romance messy, spicy, emotionally intense, and just a little unhinged—Castaway Whirlwind delivers.

I absolutely love May Alder’s book and this book is no exception.

We finally get to meet the boss man – Russell Berenson – the man who owns Berenson Trucking and 😮‍💨 oh boy! This man DOES NOT PLAY about his Darlin’ Layla!

Russell is the way older man who fall deeply in love the minute he saw Layla.
Layla is the younger ENGAGED waitress – who is loyal to his sh*t ass “fiancé” and is dealing with health issues.

Although Layla is off-limits, Russell does everything in his power to protect her. When her fiancé breaks up with her and kicks her out – Russell is there to hold her together.

Let me tell you – I fall in love with him the moment he went out and made sure she had everything to start all over again. Not only did he help her get back on her feet – he made all her dreams come true.

I felt like this was a slow burn – but so worth it – the 🌶️ scenes where 🥵 – but nothing too crazy.

Overall – I loved this book.

Now I’m hoping Elliott is next – because the sneak peeks we got were so good! 😭

Overall, this was such an amazing book and the perfect addition to the Big Boys of Berenson Trucking Series.

Favorite Quote:

“This, right here, is why I work out. It’s so I can race toward my woman and meet her before she’s even left the patio. It’s so I can stand sturdy and strong as an oak when my future wife throws herself into my arms, finding comfort and safety within my arms. It’s so I can pick her up with one hand beneath her bottom, the other gripping the back of her neck as our lips move over each other’s while I carry her inside with her legs wrapped around my waist as far as they’ll go.” 🫠

Thank you May Alder for this ARC 🩵

On the one hand, there’s a lot to like about this book. The romance insanity level is a little toned down from the first two books, given that it takes 3 1/2 years for Russell and Layla to get together. I also appreciate the depiction of a character with endometriosis and how debilitating that can be, especially trying to navigate the hellscape that is the American healthcare system. Russell and Layla are both great characters as well, and their relationship is very endearing even though the age gap is really uncomfortable (Layla is 25, Russell is 52).

On the other hand, the end of the books starts to feel messy with so many characters and subplots going on. I would have liked it more if this had been split into two books with the second focusing on Cora, who is introduced about halfway or so through this novel. Several other characters are introduced but not developed enough to matter, and the plot does suffer for it in the climax. Since this book is an interconnected standalone with several characters from the previous two books appearing here, that makes it harder to add even more characters to the mix, in my opinion. The book is still enjoyable, it just felt a bit chaotic - not in the good way - for a while toward the end.

Content/spoiler warning: we find out in the book that Layla had a sexual relationship her boyfriend Steven when she was 15 and he was 18. I added a tag for child sexual abuse on that basis - it’s not depicted in the book, but it is brought up a few times.

My first ARC!!! I have been anticipating this book for what feels like forever so I was SO excited to finally get my hands on it!!!

May Alder has slowly become one of my favorite authors and this series has just sucked me in! I’m usually not a big series person, I’ll read them out of order or just read the 1 that I am interested in, but I just can’t get enough of this series and these characters!!! I want to read about all of them! I think Elliot has my vote for the next one 😉

I just knew that I was going to love Layla and Russell; I related to a lot of her personal struggles and so to be able to escape into a world where these characters always get their happy ending was so special. I’m a sucker for a heroine who has just been put through the wringer and then can finally relax with the MMC and that was definitely Layla. You just couldn’t not root for her. Russell was just everything. Possessive but sweet, kind, romantic, supportive, just everything. He was content to just look out for her without getting anything in return, just so sweet 🥹 he may be my favorite so far in the series.

I just really loved this book, it was so sweet and being able to read about these characters and their relationships again was so fun. I had to force myself to savor it and not read it all at once!!! Definitely recommend this book and the series!!!

everything I crave in an angsty, taboo age gap romance

Russell and Layla, I’ve been thirsting for this slow-burn coupling since book one, “Runaway Whirlwind,” and May Alder delivers! She didn’t just feed me a romance story—she slow-roasted me over a fire of tension, longing, and immeasurable angst.

While you can read this book as a standalone, I highly recommend diving into the full series first for the whole decadent whirlwind experience.

Russell and Layla gave me everything I crave in an angsty, taboo age gap romance and then surprised me with extra tropes I won’t dare spoil for you, dear reader. Just know, Russell isn’t just a grumpy, rugged boss. There’s so much more under his hard shell, and Layla? She’s on the brink of reaping everything she’s worked for. Watching her finally get her break is pure catharsis.

Of course, the road to HEA is paved with messy family reunions, heartbreaking goodbyes, and found family feels that punch you right in the chest—Granny’s Girls, for life!

And in true May fashion, just when you think you know what happens next, she dangles the most delicious tease for the next pairing. I’m once again feral, clawing at the pages, and shamelessly begging for more.

Also join me in the start of the official campaign for a next-gen spin-off! I need this saga to breed like bunnies and never end.

Whenever @authormayalder releases anything new it's an automatic read for me! So when she released an ARC for book 3 in the Berenson Trucking series I absolutely had to have one! I loved the first 2 and Castaway was no exception. I never thought I'd be someone into small town romances, as I usually love darker books, but I am a sucker for this world that May created. I am feral for OTT J/P alpha mmcs and this town is full of them!
I loved the relationship between Russell and Layla and how it started. What I wouldn't give to find a Russell out in the wild! May writes about Layla's struggles with pain and infertility with sensitivity and I appreciated how much Russell wanted to be there for her for everything. I would have loved to see more scenes of him taking care of her during her most painful moments or more scenes where she talks directly to him about her diagnosis and what that means for her but a lot (though certainly not all) of that happens off page.
I also just want to mention how much I love the little small town details - the betting the old guys at the diner are doing is hilarious and I just adore it when they pop up throughout the story to take more bets or to get paid from previous betting 😂. Each of the characters in this world are so well written, even the side characters, and you can't help but love them all! I can't wait to find out who book 4 is going to revolve around though I am hoping we get some more Elliott pretty please!!

GOTDANGIT!! THIS WAS FLUFFIIN TORTURE!!!!
I was conflicted between wanting to savour every single moment by reading slowly BUT AT THE SAME TIME WANT TO DEVOUR EVERY LAST CRUMBS 🥲🥲

I'm sooo happy that Russell and Layla got their HEA BUT IT'S SURE IS A HARD ONE!! 🥲🥲
LAYLAAA MY GIRLL SUCH A BADASS FMC FOR SURE!!! 🥲
It's surprising that this is probably not as 🌶️ as the other books BUT THE EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!!!
HOOOOBOOIIII 😭😭😭
And also this book is coming pretty close to almost dark romance territory WHICH I'M SO OKAY WITH IT!!! 💖💖
So if you're okay with obsessive over the top love story with some violence here and there. Then you're good to go!

AND ALSOO THE SIDE CHARACTERS!! AAKKKHHH I LOVE ALL OF THEEMM!!! 🥲🥲
TRACEEE AND CORAA!! THEY ARE SO CRINGE BUT SO CUTE!!! 🤣🤣
