Two months ago Kate McDermot had left for Las Vegas a levelheaded virgin -- and returned with a marriage certificate and a baby on the way. Experience had taught her Brady Brown would feel trapped by the news that he was going to be a father. So, in her baby's best interest, she'd wait to tell him until after they dissolved the union. But the more time she spent with her "temporary" husband, the harder it became not to reveal the truth hidden safe within her -- and the feelings hidden in her heart.
A Ranching Family: Though scattered by years and tears, the Heller clan share mile-deep roots in one Wyoming ranch -- and a singular talent for lassoing the unlikeliest hearts!
Victoria Pade is the bestselling author of numerous contemporary romances, six historical romances and two mystery novels. She began her writing career after leaving college to have her first daughter. That daughter was seven years old and there was a second daughter, before Victoria had her first book accepted for publication. That novel and the three that followed it were historical romances. But the exit of her husband and the urge to do more contemporary writing that explored the kinds of problems she was facing inspired a switch.
I found Kate extremely annoying - she was so busy guarding her 'heart' from hurt or heartbreak, that it seemed she caused most of the problems between Brady and herself. Brady was a much more exciting person to read about, as he kept trying to get a relationship between the two of them. I finished the book, but wasn't really excited about the story.
Two months ago Kate McDermot and her siblings went to Las Vegas to celebrate two birthdays, her brother's and his best friend's, Brady Brown. The morning after the celebration Kate and Brady woke up in bed together...and married. She swore Brady to secrecy and demanded he get them a divorce. She also kept another secret from her family and Brady...a pregnancy.
Kate had a lot of baggage that she refused to let go of, clinging to the hurt and pain as though it was her lifeline. She was filled with angst and a self-defeatist attitude. She nurtured her own past hurt and took her friends' heartache and hurt upon herself, as though it had happened to her, and used it to drive a wedge between her and Brady. (Kind of sick if you really think about it!) She was an incredibly weak heroine and her constant whining, complaining, and reviewing of every past hurt of hers and others got very tiring indeed...redundant is probably a better way to describe it.
I am sorry to sound so negative but it was actually difficult for me to read...but the upside...the last 3% was almost good if the heroine had not been so detestable and self-serving. I am sorry but I cannot recommend this book. Books that allow a character to repeat the same things over and over are a real turn-off for me as an avid reader.
