How often is it that a poet with the critical standing of Selena Godden publishes their first collection 20 years into their collection? This is more than a sweeping up exercise, more than a greatest hits retrospective. Salena takes us on a hair-raising ride through the process of a writer, the highs, the lows, the drinks, the lovers, the sex (especially the sex) that she has embraced and shared with audiences over 20 years.
This is the type of book to dip in and out of, rather than trying to read from cover to cover.
I'm not a "poetry type" to be honest and thought that 2022 should be the year to combat that and try and dip a toe into poetry waters. Salena Godden is definitely a navigator of such waters. I really liked her Mrs Death Misses Death on audiobook.
There are absolute gems in here, forceful statements of existence and a call to recognition.
Some are not so great and feel like pseudo-Bukowski offerings, with predictable stories of fucking, drinking, partying too hard and memory loss!
Just great poetry with some longer stuff. She's a real poet who doesn't just magic up some pretty sounding nonsense but tells you about her life, a proper life with proper feelings through the words and with the skill of a poet.
