How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock

Alt cover ASIN: B00H46P2NS

In the small town of Crescent Rock, located in the most southern dip of North Carolina, high school senior and head of the cheerleading squad QUINN MCPHERSON leads a life … almost like the majority of her peers all over the country. Ruling her school with a firm hand, always followed by an entourage of personality-lacking wanna-bes dying to be just like her, Quinn takes the control she’s always had over her life and those in it as a given. Her word is obeyed, followed to the point and never challenged.

Until one night sends her perfectly structured life into a tailspin – literally.

As her car threatens to spin off the road, Quinn is saved in the last moment by a handsome new-comer who – as she soon discovers – is more than human, and his presence in town is not a coincidence. Although he’s never met her, ARNAUD DE LA ROCHE came to save her life. From that moment on, as one near-death situation pours into another, Quinn is constantly torn between feeling grateful for the safety of his presence and the almost desperate urge to claw his eyes out. Finding in Arnaud an equally strong mind, not used to backing down or taking orders, Quinn soon finds herself infuriated whenever she lays eyes on him. Not even when more and more supernaturals come pouring into Crescent Rock and dark secrets are dragged into the light of day are they able to set aside their differences.

If you think you are done with books about vampires , werewolves and similar creatures, think twice. This book may make you return to the genre and put a smile on your face.

It's not perfect though, it made me roll my eyes several times and it's full of clichés. However, the characters are likeable even when they are annoying and there are surprises you won't see coming.

I recommend this novel to fans of the genre who thought they had read it all.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock had me hooked from the very beginning. The first thing that I loved about this book is that the protagonist, Quinn, is a bitch. She is a high school senior, head cheerleader, who rules the school with her little minions. I couldn't believe how nasty she acted towards her friends and her little sister. I loved it! It was a nice break from the usual boring females that star in this genre of YA paranormal novels.

In the beginning, we get to know about Quinn, her family, and her daily routine. One night after a football game, Quinn has a car accident and a mysterious stranger, Arnaud De La Roche, comes to her rescue. Her parents invite him over for dinner to thank him properly and Quinn starts to sense something strange about him. Before long, Quinn witnesses Arnaud doing something that is not quite a 'human' thing to do and, after the death of someone in town, Quinn suspects that Arnaud is responsible. And in Quinn fashion, she decides that she must kill him! Her attempt was unsuccessful and she realizes that Arnaud is not the enemy.

Quinn soon puts her trust in him after they realize that someone is out to kill her. As they get closer, the banter between these two characters becomes hilarious and their love/hate relationship is believable and addictive. At first, I felt a disconnect with Arnaud but that changed drastically as the story progressed. Quinn's character impressed me the most once all of her layers started peeling off.

I also loved Quinn's closest friend, Julia, who was a wonderful person and also a teenage mother who still went to school. I can't even think of a book I have read that features a high school mother and I really enjoyed it. She is a beautiful, strong female character.

Anyways, I was more and more impressed with this book the further I got into it.

the suspense
the humor
the sexual tension
the action
the mystery

Yes, this sub-genre has been done a LOT but Bree Wolf put a fresh face on it that has me begging for more! I read a lot of paranormal book that have unrealistic characters and this isn't one of them. Her characters are believable.

I am not saying a word about the last half of the book except that it holds plenty of twists and turns.

And

Having ummed and ahhed between 3* and 4* for quite some time over this, I’ve settled on a 3.5* and rounded up to the 4.

So, I’ll kick off by saying ‘How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock’ was an immensely enjoyable read.

Plenty action and many surprising twists drove the story forward at great pace and maintained interest. There was a fascinating mix of supernatural elements and very effective dashes of humour. The bickery interactions between the characters were, without doubt, my most favouritist parts…especially those sparky to-and-froing spats between Quinn and Arnaud –they were tremendously amusing.

(Truth be told, mind, for quite some time I did struggle to get behind Quinn –her being a royal bitch from the first and all. Yet get behind her I –at some point - did. The slow development of her character was intriguing… It was actually pretty sneaky how she grew on me. Arnaud likewise, for that matter. ).

Ma-hoosive plus point: No wretched insta-love!

Moving on to where this fell down some for me...

Okay, now, don’t get me wrong here, for the most part this is a great tale well told. BUT. There were many instances throughout calling for more tidy-up attention. I feel one more edit would have been of great benefit to clear up the smattering of typos and grammatical errors (rogue commas and absent question marks being among the worst offenders), the few minor plot inconsistencies, and the far too frequent appearance of words such as Simply, Only, Just & Suddenly. These issues detracted a fair bit for me and that’s a huge damned shame.

I did also feel that certain aspects and situations were perhaps a little too…um, conveniently explained/ resolved away. (Can’t really explain beyond that, I just kinda got an overly-neat-fix-up sense of some bits I couldn't shake).

All in all, though, I had good fun with this. And the ending was brilliant! Tied up enough to satisfy, while still pulling off quite the enticing cliff hanger. I definitely intend to pick up book 2.

Big thanks to Bree Wolf for providing me a free copy of her wonderful story :).

I don't want to drop even a hint of a spoiler so I will put it this way: there is a sub-genre of young adult novels that is tired and overdone. Before I read this book, I wouldn't have cared if for the rest of my life, I never read a book in this sub-genre again. It's been done so many times I feel that now there are just cheap, derivative imitations published, writers hoping to ride the coattails of more famous books that have succeeded. And then I read To Live and Die in Crescent Rock. Bree Wolf took this sub-genre, breathed new life into it, and wrote a fantastically entertaining book.

She artfully created characters that you love to hate. Quinn is a head cheerleader at her high school. Most of her thoughts revolve around maintaining her status as queen of the pack. She barks out orders to her subjects (the other cheerleaders), cares nothing for the rules of the school and She worries about her status being tarnished by her not-as-popular younger sister, who she ruthlessly barrages with meanness.

Shortly into the story, Quinn is attacked--someone wants her dead. Anonymously, someone has sent her a mysterious protective amulet, which can warn her of danger. But it can't protect her when sabotage causes her to have a car accident. Arnaud de la Roche steps in and saves her...but is he a good guy? Quinn has her doubts suspecting him of evil but she can't help being attracted to him and slowly falling for him.

The antagonistic give and take between Quinn and Arnaud is not my favorite way to start a relationship but Bree Wolf does it masterfully. And, their banter is not entirely oppositional; it's also fun and playful, setting the scene for a lively romance. The dialogue is witty and authentic.

I enjoyed the way Quinn transforms--she starts out as a self-absorbed teen, but grows up upon discovering the seriousness of her attacker. She begins to care about other people, including her younger sister and the unfortunate cheerleader who ended up dead because the murderer mistook her for Quinn.

This book hooked me. I stayed up way later at night than I should have because I couldn't stop reading. It was steadily fast-paced with no lags. There are suspenseful sub plots that kept me guessing and I never saw the surprise ending coming.

I sometimes read the first book in a series, like it and intend to read the next book(s). But, the plot fades with time and blends with other books I've read in the meantime, and I end up not following up with the rest of the series. I finished To Live and Die in Crescent Rock a couple of weeks ago and it's sticking with me--I'm still thinking about it and am truly looking forward to the next books in the series.

What I loved: Besides the romance, the characterizations were terrific. I especially liked Quinn's courage--she channels her fear into anger and is fearless while facing death.

What I didn't love: I sat at my computer for five minutes and couldn't think of a thing!

Overall: Five stars for an outstanding, truly marvelous book!

I want to thank the author for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review! Just because Bree Wolf gave me How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock for review does not mean my opinion of this book has changed.

How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock was such an enjoyment to read and I had so much fun! While there were some flaws, I am definitely looking forward to the next book. Let's get to the review!

The Good

- The characters in How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock were very relatable and real. They very much seemed like real teenagers and their actions didn't seem far-fetched.

- The plot was so fast-paced and action-packed. Once it got going, it didn't slow down and I couldn't put it down!

- The ending was great! Talk about a cliffhanger! If I get a chance to read the second book, I'll definitely pick it up.

- The romance was very cute. It was slow building, and while not much happened in this one, I'm expecting some more in the second!

The Bad

- There were some grammatical errors that even I, a high-school student, picked up, and I wasn't even looking for them. If How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock had a good editor, the problems would be out in no time, so it wasn't a big issue considering that this is a self-published book.

The Ugly

- Nothing! There's nothing in this book that I hated.

Overall

This book was such fun to read! It was light and fun and I enjoyed it very, very much. While I had a little bit of an issue with the grammar in the book, I'm still looking forward to the second book and I urge you to pick up How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock.

How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock was gifted to me by the author after I fell in Love with another of her novels, Fireflies. I really enjoyed this book too, but not quite as much as I did Fireflies. It feels less well polished, and it ends with a lot of unanswered questions which I'm not a fan of. Still it was a captivating read, with some stereotyped characters evolving to become characters with their own strong personality. By the end of the book I was involved enough that I really wanted to know the answer to the unanswered questions and I have no doubt that I will read the sequel.

Quinn and her family seem very stereotyped at first. She is the perfectly narcissistic cheerleader with the less popular sister and the busy parents with a few secrets of their own. Her friends and her enemies are people you meet in most books about high school girls, but they develop and a few of them you really begin to feel for. The young mother still in school, the shadow girl who is Quinn's hanger-on, the other students; feel real and believable.

The flashes of paranormal are mild and would be ok for middle grade readers I think. There are no sex scenes, no heavy duty blood and gore, but still enough dangerous beasts and creatures of the night to be interesting in a way similar to the old tales around the campfire. Well done, Bree Wolf.

Thank you to the author, Bree Wolf, for gifting me with a copy of How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock in exchange for an honest review!

There is only one thing that bothered me a bunch while I was reading this. I just couldn’t get over the Twilight parallels. Naive girl finds out about the supernatural world via the hot vampire. She also sees werewolves (of whom happens to be the vampire’s friend). They fall in love while people try to kill both him and her. Sound familiar? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Other than that little glitch, it was pretty smooth sailing. The MC Quinn is definitely not your average protagonist. It was almost humorous to see how she “ruled” her school as well as her interactions with her friends and not-so-friendly-friends.

That plot twist at the end… I was NOT expecting that. I knew something was up with Jo but that? Yeah that came out of nowhere!

As far as the plot, it was pretty good. I mean, the action scenes were placed just so in the optimum spots and I was always looking for what was going to happen next.

The one thing I truly applaud the author for is the mystery of Jo. As I mentioned in one of the preceding paragraphs, it was a very well done mystery. I truly can’t wait to read the next book because of that last sentence!

The Final Verdict:

This is a very good book although the similarities to Twilight got to me. The mystery of Jo and the continuing action scenes kept me interested.

3.5 stars

Quotes:

Okay, I know for a fact that I highlighted things while I read it on my kindle. There must have been a glitch and it deleted them or something because this no quotes thing is getting a bit ridiculous! I'll go back through and highlight them again I suppose.

Where do I start? (No really, I had a massive review that got deleted when I lost wifi connection *sad face* haha). How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock Was a refreshing look at the supernatural YA genre. At first the book seemed like a Vampire Diaries meets The Mortal Instruments meets Buffy Kind of story, but it quickly set itself apart from these other stories.

The characters in this story, I have to say, really stand apart from the usual characters in this sub-genre. So often it seems that there is a certain character formula that these books seem to take and I really loved how the characters broke this mold, especially with Quinn. It's so nice to have a leading lady who isn't clueless, overly timid, and overly nice. This really made the story less predictable and so much more engaging.

In addition to the awesome characters, the book's writing style really stood out and added to the stories charm. The writing seemed to have a little spunk and made me laugh out loud several times at the snarky comments.

My only problem with this book was that some parts of the story came across as choppy and the third person narrative was a little awkward at times. I really think the book would have been interesting if it was written in Quinn's voice. Although, I could see how this might change the way the story is read (especially with an opinionated character like Quinn). These are both personal opinions and I really wouldn't let them deter you from picking up the book and giving it a read.

Overall, this was a really fun and entertaining book to curl up with and read before finals. :)

I was given a copy of "How to Live and Die in Crescent" by the author, Bree Wolf, in exchange for an honest review. This was a good read. It is intended for YA and I can recommend it for high school and up. There is no sexual content and only mild swearing. There is supernatural and occult themes in this book for my Christian followers(vampires, immortals, werewolves, and necromancers). The characters are interesting, the interaction between the two main, love interest is amusing, verbal battles abound. This is the first of the series. It ends with a cliff hanger. I will finish series when the writer is finished writing it. I need to know the ending.

I fell for this book right away. Quinn is a cheerleader at her local high school. She's not nice. She just isn't. She's surrounded by a group of other cheerleaders and most of them want to be her. One day, she receives an amulet in the mail with a note saying that she might need it soon. She also meets a guy named Arnaud, who saves her life. He proves to be a bit of a mystery. Then things start happening.

If you like paranormal stories with realistic romance, you'll love this story!

This was a fun read, refreshingly reconstructed from recent memes. The characters and the dialog are fresh and entertaining. The story rocks along at a brisk pace. The whole thing wraps up in a surprise ending that leaves a lot of questions still unanswered. It's easy to care about these characters and what they're going to do about their problems. It's a good debut novel from Bree Wolf.

Title: How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock
Series: Crescent Rock Series #1
Author: Bree Wolf
Genre: Supernatural, romance, paranormal, YA
Overall Rating: 4 stars

Quinn McPherson is the IT girl in her high school, head of the cheerleading squad and one of the most popular people in school, she likes to think she leads a normal life with people envying her, people copying her and her best friends supporting her. However, when she receives a mysterious amulet in the post, her life begins to change and with a near death experience comes the newest guy in town, Arnoud de la Roche who saves her life and submerges her in a world of vampires, the after life and assassins. Can popular girl Quinn keep her head in all this or will the insanity of her situation take over her?

When Bree Wolf contacted me about reading her book, I was excited simply by the title. It's a good title. The writing in this book definitely exceeded my expectations, whenever author's contact me, I never know what standard their writing is, but this author definitely has a very high standard of writing, a skill not to be criticised. The pace of this book was also very fast with many ups and downs, twists and surprises along the way. Usually, I get put off by popular characters as they tend to be bratty and whiny but Quinn actually had a personality! She was funny but sometimes and it was interesting to see the story through her eyes.

Another thing that puts this book on a podium would be NO INSTA LOVE. No line like "I seem him and was in love, fell in love straight away" bleh. It was good, I also applaud how the paranormal creatures stuck together, werewolves like vampires after all. And the plot twist at the end! Wow! Totally unseen, even though I knew she was connected somehow.

My only criticism would be that there were a couple of rogue typos through the book, although a small thing, going through with a fine comb would make the overall thing more professional!

Thank you very much Ms. Wolf!

If there's one thing I'm sure of it's that, as much as we want too, we will never see the world for what it is. Some things lie in the shadows. Maybe they're not meant for us to see. Some things we just need to accept. Some things we just can't fight. They are what they are.

This book just reminded me how sexy everything sounds when said in French, even curse words ... but leaving all jokes aside, I found How to Live and Die in Crescent Rock an easy, fluid read with all the ingredients of a well written book: mystery, slow buildup, tension, and not to forget sexy characters.

Quinn may be on the surface the regular queen of the school you often find in books, but what I found most enticing about her character is how there are plenty of other things defining her - courage, most of all. I loved the banter between her and Arnaud and witnessing their interactions was really fun.

The single thing I find difficult when reviewing this book is that I cannot say too much without stepping the spoiler line ... but I can say that I absolutely enjoyed the way the book was written, clearly detailed, so that the reader can have the scenes unfolded in front of her or his eyes, just like in a great movie.

A Review from Lex:
The plot was definitely interestingly portrayed, Bree took what would have been a typical paranormal plot of girl’s-life’s-in-danger-boy-comes-to-protect-girl-girl-and-boy-fall-for-each-other and put a new spin on things. It definitely left me with questions until the end of the book but didn’t make me feel like I needed to know what happened next, which is why I’m writing this 6 minutes from midnight. The plot was definitely one of the reasons that I continued reading instead of going into that dreaded t0-be-read-but-honestly-never-will-read pile. In short, the plot was interesting enough for me to read the book but I personally felt a lack of urgency to read it. Also, there’s a major cliffhanger and I totally predicted who that girl was once I read her name by the way.
