I read many “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” books as a child, but they were all the post-2000 ones with the metallic covers. I loved the pictures of the tattooed people and the quirky facts. It was interesting reading this edition which is copyrighted as 1979 because it is so different from the modern editions.
This edition gave me a better understanding of why the “or Not!” is included in the name. All of the pictures were hand drawn (really well done!), but there is less credibility for the trivia. It also seemed as though there was less fact-checking; for example, on page 112, it states “the muskox fighting a wolf, leaps high into the air to land on the wolf on its back.” If you’ve ever seen a muskox in person you would be very doubtful of this fact. I researched this afterwards and it appears all that muskox do with wolves is charge them or run away.
Overall, the trivia and pictures were very entertaining. I learned many new facts I had not known before and reading this book recalled my forgotten love of trivia. I would highly recommend this edition or any other editions of “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!”

I hope I marked the right one of the countless Believe It Or Nots... I suppose I read the 2nd edition, the 1931 one, but I do not know, whether this one is a reprint or not... well, well...
About the 1931 one: it was a quick, fun read about all kinds of weird facts from all around the world. Of course, since then, the world has changed a lot, so some of the unbelievable facts from that era are pretty much commin knowledge right now... aaaaannnnd not being an American I was being fed up with the numerous baseball references throughout. But there still were some mind-blowing instances (like the guy who could read with his tongue).
