She does not know who I am yet. That is fine. A lady in her position, riding high with her music career, would have no reason to know me. Not yet at least. That is all to change though. I will edge my way into her life, I will make her realise that I am the one she is supposed to be with. I can picture it now, she will see my videos dedicated to her on my YouTube channel and she will drop every thing to come for me. We will be the perfect couple. Far better than her current boyfriend - the abusive imbecile failing in his own music career if you can call it that. Someone needs to do something about him before he further tarnishes the reputation and career of my love, my Sindy Cole.
This is a short story from the twisted mind of Matt Shaw (Sick B*stards, Porn, Rotting Dead F*cks, Tortured).
MATT SHAW was born, quite by accident (his mother tripped, he shot out) September 30th 1980 in Winchester hospital where he was immediately placed on the baby ward and EBay. Some twelve years later (wandering the corridors of the hospital and playing with road kill when he was on day release), the listing closed and he remained unsold, he was booted out of the hospital to start his life as a writer and hobbit – beginning with writing screenplays and short stories for his own amusement before finally getting published when he was twenty-seven years and forty-five seconds old.
Once Published weekly in a lad's magazine with his photography work, Matt Shaw is also a published author and cartoonist. Has to be said, can be a bit of a flirt and definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, somewhat of a klutz.
Favourite books "Roald Dahl's Collection of Short Stories" Tim Burton's Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy Anything, really, written by himself. Because he is that good.
There were some funny moments when the narrator (James Edwards) lost his temper but otherwise this story was 90% inner monologue with some comedic rants mixed in. Then there was that ending...
Time and time again, Matt Shaw manages to amaze me. I've mentioned countless times that he's diverse and willing to push boundaries. He's also willing to tread into unfamiliar territory and produce something different...which is what he does with My Deadly Obsession. There's no violence, no blood. In fact, the worst you'll get in this story is some seriously naughty language. This is a story about one man's view on a particularly relevant subject in modern culture...and Shaw nails it. If you live on Twitter, turn away now...if you have time to pull yourself away from your tweets.
Twitter and Facebook, damn you be. Well, if this story is anything to go by. We've all seen the people who take social media way too seriously, the person who stalks their favourite band or singer or celebrity. My Deadly Obsession takes it one step further, producing an insightful, scary and sometimes realistic view of one man obsessed with a pop star. His obsession is so deluded he starts posting videos on You Tube declaring his love for the woman. When her rap star boyfriend beats her up, he makes it his mission to split them up and have her for himself. And he'll do anything to make it happen.
Now, in modern society, this sounds like your everyday news story. Whether or not Shaw saw this and thought, 'I have to write this' - I think he did, the guy's clever - he's produced a streamlined, accurate account of one person's obsession. At times, painful, embarrassing, psychological and, yes, humourous, MDO rings too true in a world dominated by social media, a gateway to people's private lives that were once that; private. You cringe when the character visits the home of his obsession and is turned away...these days, you can see it happening...literally thanks to a tweet or a like. Access is everything nowadays - much to the behest of the victim - and in this story, Shaw highlights just how crazy and hazardous it can be.
5* - Ingenious. And realistic. Whether it's the domestic abuse (much like Chris Brown and Rihanna), the fans changing their appearance to appeal to their chosen obsession or just one person going ape-shit over the smallest thing like a You Tube review or a mis-interpreted tweet...My Deadly Obsession is a character study on how social media and access to the ones you admire can ruin lives. This may not be your usual Shaw fare, but it deserves to be read. Authors with this type of flexibility are rare and Shaw proves once again that, without the gore or offensive material, he can still write riveting material and realistic characters. After all, this is what we want from our authors... even if some of us don't stalk them on Facebook. Essential!
First of all his is not your typical Matt Shaw story. This isn't horror. It's not gory. It is a very real story. It's about stalking and obsession. Nowadays we are so flooded with so many images and so much information about celebrities that we feel like we know them. The boy in this story just wants so badly to feel loved. Even his parents don't seem to care. I couldn't help but feel sad for him. It was a great, short read.
Another brutal little story from the twisted mind of Matt Shaw. It's scary how someone can be so delusional thinking that a general post on twitter for the fans of Sindy could be meant for just that one person. It's scary that the security of Sindy allowed someone to sit outside of her home all day and most of the night without realising. It's scary because I had to deal with a friend who got physically angry and threatening towards another friend for kissing his girlfriend near him because he was so obsessively in love with that girl. A girl who refused all his advantages and still get thought she was playing hard to get even after all his friends were telling him that she wasn't interested. It was a scary time for the girl involved and has brought up all the memories of the tension and trying to defuse the situation plus lying about her whereabouts to keep her and get boyfriend safe from the other guy.
This time, we follow a disturbed individual who has an unhealthy obsession with his favorite celebrity, and willing to do anything to be noticed by her
I love a good "obsession" story, and this one did not let me down! I enjoyed all of the social media aspects, the dialogue, the decline of the mental health of our main character. This was a great one by Shaw!
My Deadly Obsession is a short story by Matt Shaw. It outlines the dangers in the media coverage that celebrities now receive and one man’s struggle with an Obsession this media coverage is feeding.
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little disappointed in this book, there are a few reasons for this but the main thing for me is that I was expecting something just a little more gritty and unnerving. I expected this one to be a bit stronger than it is, but that’s just me. I guess I just didn’t feel like anything really happened in it.
I can’t really talk about the rest of the book without ruining it for any who want to read it, but I can say this, personally I felt that the end of the story was a bit of a let down. I’d be interested to see what other people’s reaction to it is though and whether it’s just me.
All in all it’s a simple, short story which will help you pass some time on. I’m happy I read it because I’ve been meaning to try out some of Mr Shaw’s work for a while.
I’ll be reading more of his books because I want to see what I’ve heard about and see just how gritty it gets.
You know what. This was very good. Better than I was expecting given the book cover (I know, don't judge a book by its cover). In fact it's a shame this was not just a short story but a full length read. The theme is pretty current actually. An obsessed fan who is deluded and uses YouTube to voice his devotion. It all came across as realistic to me and it would not surprise me if I searched on YouTube i would be able to find similar such fans voicing their opinions on someone or other. These type of underdog characters the author writes extremely well. Recommended if you like the Peter Chronicles.
