Dawn of the Chupacabra

Rate this book
The fourth chapter in the award-winning Chupacabra Series follows an A.W.O.L. Confederate soldier, who is hunted by a demon sent to avenge the innocent of his heinous crimes.

Before Night, Came Dawn

Jeremiah Whiting has been a survivor since birth. He endured an abusive upbringing only to fight as a private for the losing side of the American Civil War. But when the war ends, Jeremiah’s battle does not. He will meet his greatest enemy yet, in the form of a heinous entity sent to kill him for crimes against the Cherokee Nation, and the only allies willing to fight at his side are the remarkable instincts he possesses and the voice of a deceptive Soldier who possesses him.

Dawn of the Chupacabra tells the origin tale of a supernatural beast born out of hatred and rage. Sent to kill a man no less atrocious, the monster’s creators soon learn the error of their fatal mistake and abuse of power when the creature terrorizes above and beyond its intended purpose. Dawn of the Chupacabra breathes life into a legendary curse spawned from the ashes of war and begins what will continue to blemish the earth for centuries to come.

I love creature stories and Michael’s series just keeps getting better.

I’m sure you’ve all heard mention of the legendary beast, the chupacabra. the goat sucker. Well, Michael’s put his own spin on this creature and it’s scary as hell.

This book takes you to where it all began.

The chupacabra is terrifying. So relentless. So malevolent. And it will never stop coming for it’s victim. Don’t get in its way.

While the chup is awesome, so are Michael’s characters. They live. They breathe. They bleed.

This author so easily brings his characters to life. You’ll care about them. Worry about them. You’ll love some and hate some. All are important to the story. Even the minor characters add important elements to make this story shout from the pages.

A creature born from a lust for blood vengeance, the chupacabra is not to be controlled. Michael’s use of ancient Indian rituals makes this story even more eerie.

One man, with a horrible past, does despicable deeds. Called to seek vengeance, the chupcabra beings to hunt him. The war is over for most, but the final battle is just beginning for Jeremiah Whiting.

The beginning of this story follows Jeremiah from the battlefield to home and on to Cherokee territory. You won’t like him. You’ll loathe him. Wish him dead in all kinds of ways for the terrible things he’s done. Once he starts on his terrible path, he can’t stop. The voice in his head doesn’t help much and his luck is running out. Jeremiah is lower than pond scum and you’ll be anxious for his demise.

And it’s coming. It’s horrific. It’s hungry for blood. The chupacabra will find Jeremiah. It will toy with him. Torture him. And then… you’ll see the dark side of this cat and mouse ending.

Chilling and disturbing. Fascinating and addictive. The old west is twisted and remolded for Michael’s story. Adding a mythical beast to the mix takes you down a dark and chilling road.

When you think about it, the title and cover are perfect for the subject matter, the origin of the chupacabra. I love MIchael Hebler’s explanation of how and why the chupacabra came to be.

Jeremiah Whiting’s story ticked me off.

The Civil War caused some heinous acts to be perpetrated. A truly evil being wants to bring death and destruction to the world and will do whatever is necessary to ,ale it happen.

And then I met the American Indian, Yuma.

Michael Hebler has no trouble skewing even a good guy to the bad side, maybe even killing them off.

The details and descriptions are so deep, visualization is a snap, the surroundings coming to life.

Want to know what angers the spirits…you need to read Dawn of the Chupacabra yourself. LOL

Well, Michael, it has been quite the ride. The highs and lows kept me wrapped up in the characters, grieving for them when they passed, reveling with them when something good happens, and I can hardly wait to find another ‘family’ from you to hook up with.

DAWN OF THE CHUPACABRA is the fourth book in the Chupacabra series and now we learn, in detail, the origins of this unstoppable force. Fighting in the Civil War and longing to go home, Jeremiah Whiting is determined to make it back no matter the cost. Whiting has little to no impulse control, even with the Soldier whispering in his brain, which leads him into temptation and beyond. DAWN OF THE CHUPACABRA is a chilling tale with richly developed characters. I do wish the book had started out on a more positive note before we got sucked into the hateful life of Jeremiah Whiting. He’s not a character you will feel any empathy for at all, but it doesn’t detract from the fact he is so well-written it’s satisfying to hate him. DAWN OF THE CHUPACABRA is a remarkable tale of greed, lust, and revenge.

I've been a great fan of the Chupacabra series from the start, so of course I couldn't wait for this sequel, especially when I heard that it would reveal the origin of the Chupacabra. Sadly, I have to admit that my excitement vanished with each page I read further into the book.

Where was the Chupacabra? When would it make it's first appearance already? Instead, I was presented with the story of a man I despised from the start, which made it even harder to follow his actions. Once he was with the Cherokee tribe it got better, but only by a small degree. Then, at last, the Chupacabra was brought to life, but it's stage time was much too short and it remained a background character most of the time.

While I appreciated to finally get to know the how and why for the existence of the Chupacabra, those answers took only a short story portion of this whole novel, and I just couldn't relate to the main plot and characters that took up the rest.

I am devastated to admit that I did not like much about this novel, but that is my personal honest opinion. While part 1-3 will remain favorites on my shelf, this installment will definitely stay hidden behind in shame... However, the next book in the series has already been announced, so I'm looking on the bright side and forward to meeting the Chupacabra again.
