Sex and politics collide…with passionate results.

Catherine Davenport Carlton needs a break. After dedicating her life to her political-minded family, shocking scandals from the past have shaken her to her core. My Musings

Wow, I could not stop reading this book! It's fantastic. It has a great cast of characters from the hero and heroine to the delightful children, even has a awesome villain. The mother is just evil. So glad I read this one, but I wAnt Bennett's story!!!! Happy reading!

This being the second book in the Davenport series, I was a little concerned that I would feel lost going into it but thankfully the author did a pretty good job relating facts from the first book pretty quickly in the first few chapters without making it too detail oriented or feeling like too much of a recap.

Oh gosh, I don't think I was quite ready for the craziness that is the Davenport's way of life. A life of politics, scandal (or covering up scandals), lies, deceit, and anything else you could imagine. The only saving grace was of course, the sweet and spicy romance between Brody and Cat.

I loved so many aspects of this book and had to bite my tongue and cringe at so many others.

This was pretty fast paced and kept me turning the pages wondering what else would be discovered and unveiled. How can there be so many painful and life altering secrets between one family?

Besides all the crazy political goings on, what you really have is a very sweet romance between two people with a whole lot of history. A history that goes back about twenty years. A history that changed their lives in ways they didn't even know about until they meet again.

Sometimes life handed you crap. And when you got a second chance, would you redo your actions or made new mistakes?

Ah well, never mind my wise summarization. Basically this was soap-opera-like story of two political families, a modern political Romeo and Juliet. With the twist. There were discreet love liaisons, illegitimate off-springs, SECRETS!!! And in the end, true love conquered them all.
Pretty cliche, huh. :D

But what got me good were:
- A bespectacled gorgeous hunk of history professor. He's smart, had good bod (six pack great arse and all that), a playwright, had principles and good sense of humour.
Too good to be true for sure, but not really. He was rather hot headed and stubborn too. And that toy-complex he had for his car, to the extend it caused you to miss sex… Man, that was just hilarious! But I’m not a guy, so I could be wrong.
- Low level angst and drama. To me, for this particular story, it was good not to have the characters wary and suspicious of each other from the get go. Slightly questionable, given they had PAST, but it helped me got through to the end.
- No straight to the sack lovey dovey. Pur MCs met again after almost two decades and taken time to flirt first, not jumping each other bones first chance they'd got despite mutual attraction.
- The heroine was not clingy. Again, despite her past (and present) decision in the name of family blah blah blah...

What I didn't like:
- The villains did not have any redeeming qualities whatsoever.
I prefer shades of grey to pure black and white, and they would’ve made the story more interesting IMHO.
- After how I approved the MCs taking time to get to know each other, they turned into sex rabbits, who had at it, like, four/five times a NIGHT. Really? I mean, REALLY? They must've been really healthy and energetic mid-thirties couple.
- Predictable secrets and conclusions. This had lots to do with secrets hovering all over these two families, wouldn't want to spoil the fun finding them out. ;p

Not saying this was a bad story. It's quite entertaining, actually. I thought some scenes could be cut down to speed the pace a bit. But overall they were fine.

2.75 stars

This is the first book that I have read by Kim Law and it will not be my last as I loved it.

The story is about Catherine Davenport Carlton and Brody Hollister and a second chance at getting things right, they met when they where teenagers and both fell in love with each other, one night things got heated and Cat lost her virginity to Brody, then she disappeared and never returned the next summer as promised.

Cat is a 'Davenport' the daughter of a very influential family and her mother is running for senator, Brody is a history professor and lives in Dryersport the town where they met. After finding out about a family scandal Cat decides she needs to get away from everything to regroup and rents a beach house in the little town of Dryersport, where they originally came from, an added bonus for her when she arrives is was watching her hunky neighbour jog in the mornings. It was only after a visit to the towns museum that she finds out the man she has been lusting over was no other than Brody - her lost love.

Cat is still attracted to him and he is to her but they both have BIG major secrets that they are afraid to tell each other, both afraid that their new found friendship would be over before it started and their lives ripped apart if one of them told the truth. So they decided to have a 12 day fling but keep it to themselves because of whom Cat was and the scandals that were hitting the tabloids regarding her family, she could not cope with adding to these.

There are lies, deceit, illegitimate child, passion and a fantastic story line about how Cat and Brody learn to cope with their families and the outcome of some of the lies. I absolutely loved this book and I would recommend it to all romance lovers out there. The story flows and there are a few surprises along the way. Congratulation Kim Law on your fabulous new release.

These people are NUTBALLS! LOL We all know that with politics comes a life of hiding and secrets and deceit and cover-ups and drama drama drama! But even knowing all that, it does not prepare you for the crazy that is ... The Davenports!
Catherine and Brodie met when they were teenagers. They were in love :) She gave him her virginity. And then she disappeared. Never to be heard from again. Until now.
OK, so present day .... Catherine needs a break from the family drama. She goes off and rents a little beach house to get some much needed R&R and space from her family. And as a lovely bonus, she gets to watch her gorgeous neighbor jog every morning! Yeah .... but well, said neighbor is none other than Brody (lol). They find that they are still VERY much attracted to each other BUT neither is ready to share with each other the whole truth and nothing but the truth about each other. Both of them have MEGA secrets they are keeping and they are afraid that telling each other will only cause them harm. So what do they decide is best to do about their attraction? Yeah, have a SECRET fling. Because that always ends well, right?! (lol) I'm pretty sure you guys can guess what comes now ... a story FULL of twist and turns with lies and drama that is beyond excessive!
Everything I just mentioned is what makes this story FANTASTIC! It is a page turner people! You will be glued to it. TRUST!
Their road to HEA was not a smooth one, but oh so sweet in the end! Highly recommend this to ALL romance readers out there!

FANTASTIC!!! The perfect blend of politics and romance. This may've been the second book, but you really don't need the first one to get through the series...

I loved the romance, writing, main character (she was such a kind, intelligent individual, and she really developed throughout the story, and just the plot in general.

But man did Cat go through a lot in this one. She went through heart-break, shocking secrets, paparazzi, steamy love, and so much drama, it made me dizzy. She had so many obstacles to have her happily ever after, I thought I had a lot, but I guess not.

I liked this one, and I am now interested to see what is in store next.

Are there really families like this? If so, why do people waste their time reading about them? I do not like to fill my mind with images of people of low character, regardless of their net worth or political clout.

4 House of Cards Stars!!

Source: eARC for Honest Review Courtesy of Author

Here, we have a political Romeo and Juliet type story. There are two political rivaling families the Davenports and the Harrisons. This is the second book in this series but I read it as a standalone. This family is like a house of cards with all their secrets. From the gist of it we find that Cat Davenport needs a break from her family after finding out some doozy family secrets. So, she runs to a place that means more to here then she even realizes.

Here she has a chance to be childless for a few weeks and enjoy some alone time which she doesn't get often being a widow and in charge of the Davenport's Legacy. One shining part of her vacation is her sexy neighbor with a firm butt that she secretly covets through binoculars every morning.

As she's on vacation it's quickly ruined with more family drama and being caught between the war of these two battling families. While she's there she also is mourning a loss of few things lost 19 years ago. What she didn't expect is that her sexy neighbor is also one of the things from her past that she never thought she would see again.

Brody Hollister is a history professor at the local university and loves what he does but finds himself being lonely at times. While hating being part of a political family that is nothing but bad. When Brody finds Cat Davenport being his new neighbor his feelings from the past resurface and for the first time in a long time he wants something more but to get that he has to hide a part of himself to get it. Because with the Davenports their appearance means everything.

"You do that, Miss Davenport. Put your public face back on. Wouldn't want to be caught living your own life, would you?"

After rekindling with Brody, Cat starts to realize the reality of the manipulation that is her family. Especially holding a devastating secret that can ruin everything. As Brody and Cat continue with holding their secrets their relationship blossoms until some of the secrets start leaking out. Can Cat go beyond being a Davenport or will she always choose her family over herself?

I did like this political romance and it had me captivated with all the layers of secrets and nasty game playing. I have to admit I hate it when both parties of the main couple have secrets and one secret is WAY bigger than the other, but there's such a double standard when they find out the other secret first and go all 'woe is me, how could you?' when there secret is WAY bigger and more damaging. Argh!!! I have to admit that part drove me bat shit crazy but thankfully someone who is much younger and wiser than them teaches them some life lessons so they can get over their own shit and pride and see things for how they really are.

With this house of cards so many secrets are coming reveal, while more are to come. I can't wait to continue with this series. This was my first Kim Law book and will not be my last. :)

I'm quickly becoming a Kim Law fan. She has interesting stories with great characters and romances. This was no exception. This was the second in the Davenports series. In the first, we learned some of the secrets of this Davenport family. Secrets that the Davenport matriarch doesn't want coming to light, considering she expects the Davenports to keep their seat in state government.

In this one, Cat has gone to Maine for vacation, to distance herself from her family. The family secrets in the previous book were kept from her as well, and she is still sort of reeling from learning about them. She's gone to Maine because she had such a wonderful time when she was 16 and there on vacation. That was the summer she met Brody, and they had a real connection. Or she thought they did until she returned home and never heard from him again.

But as luck would have it, Brody is her hot neighbor she watches run on the beach through binoculars (before she realized it was him). He decided to make Maine his home. They don't realize their close proximity until they come face-to-face at the local museum, where he's teaching and she's touring. They're both thrown off-kilter, but neither can deny the sparks they once shared, and while time has passed, their connection seems just as strong.

But of course there are more secrets. And Emma Davenport should be ashamed of herself. In a big way. Being an election year, mud is being slung all over the place. I have no idea if real politics is as cutthroat as portrayed, but it's no wonder we have no good people stepping up to the plate. Who wants their lives to be torn apart like that?

I was so glad to see Cat stand up for herself against her mother and all the secrets and lies, and I was glad that Brody was able to forgive. I was very happy with how the story ended up. I hope the next story is about their big brother. Sounds like he drew the short stick within the Davenport clan, and as much as Cat and JP have found their happiness, he definitely deserves some of his own. Especially with what we discover at the end of this one (which I suspected).

I received a copy of Caught in the Act from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Kim Law continues with the Davenport family and politics in this second installment. This book however, is about Catherine Davenport Carlton and her need to get away from everything including her family and just be herself for a change. She has always believed in her family but now shocking scandals from the past have shaken her to her core. So she decides to spend the summer in the quiet town of Dyersport, Maine.

She becomes fascinated with the super-hot neighbor right next door, whom she discovers is Brody Hollister, the boy she fell in love with as a teenager. Their romance was eighteen years ago, but she’s still haunted by a terrible secret that could devastate Brody.

Brody Hollister loved and lost touch with Cat Davenport all those years ago. They had met young and loved passionately and then she disappeared from his life.

The book deals with the Davenport family and also their rivals and what links they will go including deceit and lies within their own family to protect their run for office. Will Brody and Cat break free from her family’s political ties and the scandals and lies that could ruin their rekindled romance? In my opinion this is the best one yet in the series and I would love to see another book written.

Received from NetGalley

Caught in the Act (The Davenports #2) was second in a series but I didn't know that when I requested it. Book #1 follows Catherine's brother I believe so I'm not sure it's needed unless you want a fuller background picture. If you like contemporary romance and second chances at love, then I highly suggest you pick this one up. It was a fast read and though I didn't read #1, I followed most of the book with no issues.

Catherine Davenport has always played by the rules laid out for her. She fell in love as a teenager but they didn't last (we find out why in this book). Fast forward 18 years and her first love is living next door to her. We watch Catherine struggle with her past as it meets her present and see her finally grow up and stick up for herself. This was probably on the Nora Roberts level of smut so some heat but nothing raunchy or super smut-tastic. I enjoyed the book enough to put #1 on my TBR and not so secretly hope for a #3. The publication date is January 20, 2015 and you can preorder it at Amazon now.

A second chance love story between "kitty" Cat and Brody. Cat has taken a vacation to Maine for some quite, down time and to spend time with her neighbor, Brody. They have a history of a summer fling as teenagers. The relationship starts up again but will family secrets and politics keep that from happening.

This is the second book in the Davenport family, from can be easily read as a stand alone. This book is packed with family drama, secrets, politics and of course plenty of romance. Once you start this book, you will not be able to put it down. Love Kim Law's writing style. she will grab you in and not let go. I highly recommend this series!

Loved this one! It's a wonderful second chance story filled with all the lies and webs of deceit political families deal with. At the core of the story though is Cat and Brody. Once teenage loves, torn apart when youth, circumstance, and family take over. Now reunited in a sleepy little town in Maine, can they put the past behind them to look to the future or will the pull of politics and family keep them apart once again. This is a great read that everyone should have on their must read list. I highly recommend it!

I loved revisiting the Davenports. I also loved the concept of reuniting with the "great teenage love of your life." The story was so well written that I was cheering for Brody and Cat from page one. There were so many twists and turns in the political minefield between the Davenports and Harrison's. I was not expecting the ending at all (not that I will spoil that here!). Fantastic book with excellent plot and character development.

Simply put FANTASTIC!!! I was able to get this book from the Goodreads Giveaways in exchange for an honest review. Even though this was book two, there is no need for number 1.

I loved it! The romance, the writing style, the development of the main character as the story progressed and the story itself; the plot development. Heart break, secrets, drama...Does Cat have an opportunity for happily ever after? Read on to find out!

Full Review posted at A Book Lovin' Mama's Blog

Caught in the Act is the second book in Kim Law’s The Davenports series. I enjoyed this one more than the first, but it put me through the wringer. I’m going to warn you that this one was a tearjerker, at least for me, especially in the beginning and the ending. I should have grabbed the tissue box when I got to the end. Kim Law definitely knew how to bring on the waterworks with Catherine Davenport Carlton’s story.

The second book in the series has a lot of drama, like the first one, between the two main characters and the whole Davenport family. Cat has a secret that has been haunting her since she was sixteen years old that only a select few knew about, and it is a tearjerker of secrets. Brody has his own secret, but it pertains to the truth of who his birth father is in the story. There are so many secrets between the characters that it’s bound to cause issues, especially when they try to establish a relationship again nineteen years later.

Overall, this book receives 4.5-stars from me. Yes, this book made me cry, but it did have an epic happily ever after for Cat and Brody, who deserved it.

Kim Law writes sweet contemporary romance stories, but she does make the characters go through some drama to find their happily ever after with each other.

Trope(s)/Element(s): Star-crossed Lovers (Romeo & Juliet), Second Chance at Love, Family Secrets, Family Drama, Political Drama (Scandals), Teenage Pregnancy/Adoption

HEA: Yes.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you enjoy sweet Contemporary Romance stories with drama and secrets, this book is for you.

In this audiobook, we are back with the Davenports. A political family with many skeletons in the closet and more continue to be exposed.
Catherine Davenport is a widow with two children, but eighteen years ago, when she was just a teenager, she fell in love with then teen, Brody Hollister. He was her first love and her first everything. Afterwards she never knew why he had ghosted her.
But Cat also has a secret she never revealed to anyone except her mother.
When Cat’s kids go to visit their paternal grandparents , she decides to return to Maine, the place she first fell in love. Never expecting to come across Brody Hollister.
From that moment on , a friendship develops but secrets on both sides and lies of omission threaten any type of relationship.
Will they be able to overcome the past, and trust again? Or Brody once again be left heartbroken?
While it was entertaining, the number of secrets were at times overwhelming. Occasionally I just wanted them to be honest with each other.
At the end, it was an entertaining story with interesting characters.
The narrator, though not my favorite, was ok.

Love this book by a new author for me

This is a great book with twists and turns, some expected and some not. It deals with family secrets and how they were handled. This book grabs you from the beginning. Cat has returned to Maine to take some time for herself and to see what direction she wants her life to go. The guy in the beach house next door catches her attention, but is she in for a surprise when she finds out its her old boyfriend, Brody. As they get to know each other again and fall in love can the secrets they both have stop them from havib by a life together this time. The bombshells keep coming at these two. Will they survive

Wow, this one was convoluted. Lots of secrets and lies. I couldn't live my life that way. That's for sure. I'm glad that Cat was able to find herself and separate herself from her toxic mother a little bit.

I felt like the book was a little long and could have been trimmed a but in the middle but other than that, I liked it. I will say the I wish that there was a male narrator for the book because all of Natalie Ross's male voices sound the same to me. I found myself reading more than listening because of that.

Gosh! So so good!

Based on the reviews, I was expecting to enjoy this. And I did! This book is 380 pages, and I could barely put it down. It has a straightforward plot, but with intricacies, and twists. The MC's for the most part, have an open, honest and sometimes blunt dialogue. That is refreshing and welcomed. There is a satisfying ending.
This is so nearly perfect, but unfortunately has about 3 word issues. It's still going on my favorites shelf. Highly recommend.

Intriguing

This book had so many twist and secrets that affected the plot. I did not see what happened to Annabelle coming. Bennett I sort of figured that out. It held my interest and I could not put it down. Cat had to experience so much pain and heartache because of her mother. Brody judged Cat's decisions before he realized he was also young and didn't have all the answers. A book truly worth reading.

So many secrets.....

And there she is just in the rental house next door. It has been 19 years and he still doesn't know why she ghosted him. A meddling mother that's who! She is part of a rich and powerful political family who dominate her life. Seemed by here wss much bed hopping in the past, which is soon becoming uncovered. A really entertaining story.

I enjoyed cat and Brody’s story in book two and I really do hope Annabelle gets her own book! I personally thought the sex scene where they had sex four times in one day was not only ridiculous but a little over the top but other than that the sex/romance was pretty well done. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series! 😍
