The 210th Day reveals another facet of Soseki's skills. Written almost entirely in dialogue form, it demonstrates Soseki's vivid imagination and his gift for striking images. It follows two friends' attempt to climb the rumbling Mount Aso as it threatens to erupt – recording their banter abouth their backgrounds, behaviors, and reactions to the things they see along the way. The 210th Day combines Eastern and Western genres – the Western autobiography and the traditional Japanese literary diary – into a work with a unified theme and atmosphere.

Author Biography: Natsume Soseki (1867-1916), novelist and scholar of English literature, is widely considered the foremost novelist of the Meiji period (1868-1914). Among his works, I Am a Cat and Master Darling are especially well-known in Japan.

About the author

Natsume Sōseki (夏目 漱石), born Natsume Kinnosuke (夏目 金之助), was a Japanese novelist. He is best known for his novels Kokoro, Botchan, I Am a Cat and his unfinished work Light and Darkness. He was also a scholar of British literature and composer of haiku, kanshi, and fairy tales. From 1984 until 2004, his portrait appeared on the front of the Japanese 1000 yen note. In Japan, he is often considered the greatest writer in modern Japanese history. He has had a profound effect on almost all important Japanese writers since.

"Give money to an idiot and he will usually want to become a tyrant."

This is a curious and sometimes unremarkable little book by Soseki. Probably only for the completist, since most folks not inured to his only occasional peculiarities will likely find it boring.
Nihyaku toka is the setting, which is the titular day of the year heralding what we might call the beginning of hurricane season. Two friends try to hike up to the rim of Mount Aso, a volcano. The short novel is composed almost entirely of their conversation. Most of this conversation turns on social themes, especially the them of the disenfranchised versus the weak. As the two friends talk and hike, the going gets rougher until they reach an impossible point. There is much subtlety here, more so than in Soseki's longer, later works, and it will definitely simmer on the back burner of your brain for a while. There is also more humor on offer, which also makes it stand out from some of his other novels.

Soseki Natsume is probably the most popular writer in Japan. His time period is in the teens and this particular book was written and published in 1915. It is about two friends who decide to visit and climb Mount Aso, which is a volcano.

Now what got my interest is that I spent time in this area of Japan, so it's great to read a book that deals with the location that is still pretty much the same. The book is basically dialogue between these two guys, and it's lighter than air. Nothing really happens. It is sort of like having a beer with Martin and Lewis, when they are in a mellow mood. They talk about food, Ebisu beer (good beer by the way), and a particularly funny waitress.

Do they make it to the mountain top? Well, basically no. So yes we have a short novel that doesn't really go anywhere. In fact it doesn't do anything. And that is why this book is so charming. It is not a major book by a major writer, but what it is, it is a book that is a minor work by a major novelist. And when you think of it that's not a bad thing. So yes I loved it, but I think most of you wlll hate it.

It was aight, maybe I didn’t fully understand the meaning behind the book. Seems like he likes tofu and the Roku hates udon. They only talked about the climb for %40 of the book, the rest of chatter between the two. I don’t think either of them are hot. Also who wears white clothing on a hike. Quick read tho. The end

An "okay" pick for a quick light read. Interesting and strong start. The theme was quite simple but successfully narrated a lot of good messages. Although, quite lost the momentum as it approaches the end, which also didn't leave much of an impact.

2.5. First Natsume Soseki. Should’ve picked something else maybe. Almost entirely dialogue. They don’t start climbing until the second half of the book and only for like 2 chapters. They mention tofu selling so often. Hard to finish.

This is a short novel ... a really quick read about two guys who climb an active volcano and talk. It’s 90% dialog (based on an actual climb Natsume Soseki did with a friend). It kind of cleansed me of Faulkner’s wordy sentences but did little else. I did find the following amusing:

"What use is this water?" asks Kei, the tofu seller’s son, swirling the water around in the bath.

"What use is it? According to the formula, it should be suitable for everything. But you know, you can go on rubbing it on your navel as long as you like, it still won’t go into your stomach."

"It is extremely clear, " says the man with the prominent navel, taking up some water in his cupped hands and drinking it.

"But it has no taste, " he protests spitting it out on to the floor of the bathing establishment.

"It’s drinkable, " Roku says, drinking it greedily.

Kei stops cleaning his navel and looks out through the glass with an absent-minded air while, leaning against the edge of the bath, Roku, up to his neck in the water, is observing the other’s chest.

"You’re well built, you know. Really like someone living in the wild...."

"I’m not a tofu seller’s son for nothing. If one’s not big and strong, on can’t fight the well-born and the wealthy. It’s one against all of them."

"You talk as if you really had an enemy. Who is it at present?"

"Just anybody."

Một câu chuyện ngắn chỉ vọn vẹn 5 chương, kể về hành trình lên đỉnh núi Aso của hai người bạn là Kei và Roku. Nét độc đáo duy nhất mình nhận thấy được là ở cách kể chuyện - cuộc đối thoại dài của hai nhân vật xuyên suốt cả tác phẩm. Qua đó, mình cảm nhận được tính cách đối lập hoàn toàn của Kei và Roku, một người luôn lạc quan, vui vẻ; người kia sống thực tế, hay phán xét nhưng lại rất tốt bụng. Tuy mình (có thể) hiểu một số ý tưởng về quan niệm sống mà Natsume Soseki muốn đưa ra, nhưng cách tác giả thể hiện vẫn còn khá mơ hồ và khó hình dung. Còn lại, mọi thứ khá nhạt nhoà: cốt truyện không đủ đặc sắc, giọng văn không hài hước cũng chẳng triết lí, cũng chẳng rõ trọng tâm. Theo mình tìm hiểu thì Ngày 210 chỉ là một thử nghiệm của Soseki, chắc vì vậy nên mình thấy thất vọng khá nhiều.

Ngắn thôi, câu chuyện về một chuyến đi của hai người bạn, qua những đối đáp và sinh hoạt hàng ngày.

Những tính cách rất Nhật Bản, hơi khác thường. Tưởng chừng như ngây ngô nhưng không hời hợt. Văn học tinh hoa nên nhiều yếu tố đặc trưng của đất nước mặt trời mọc được nhắc tới, bằng tên nguyên gốc, từ nhà cửa, áo quần tới ẩm thực.
Không biết thời nay, trong một quán trọ nào đó, có còn bà chị nào hiểu lầm khi khách gọi món "trứng luộc một nửa" giống như bà chị trong tác phẩm này nữa không.
Vẫn là lối kể chuyện rất bình tĩnh, thản nhiên, và khiến người ta phì cười.

Kusamakura, and especially Kokoro were much more rich books to me in terms of themes of being true to one’s art in the former, and betrayal in the later. Though the hypocritical Tofu owner’s son has some inspiring quips that are relevant even more so today like how the rich and wealthy like malice out of boredom and emptiness, the characters could have been a lot more interesting.

Sách đọc ko hay lắm.
Coi như làm quen với một hình thức tiểu thuyết thể nghiệm mới.
Cuốn này làm mình nghĩ tới Bồ Công Anh của Kawabata, 1 tiểu thuyết cũng được viết theo hình thức hội thoại giữa hai người.

Tôi vốn thích Natsume Soseki lắm mà cuốn này cứ ngang ngang không hấp dẫn gì cả. Có lẽ phần vì sách viết cách đây cả thế kỷ và cũng là thử nghiệm thôi chứ không phải sở trường của tác giả.

Check thấy cuốn trước của Soseki cho 2.5 sao, cuốn này 2 sao, không hiểu sao trong lòng vẫn muốn lì. Chắc đến "Nỗi lòng" hay "Tôi là con mèo" rồi nó sẽ hay thôi, chắc thế..

Thoại liên tục nên đôi lúc mình phải dừng lại đếm đoạn xem Kei hay Roku đang nói. Chẳng biết do cách dịch hay do bản gốc (người Nhật thời đấy nói chuyện với nhau thế?), thoại của hai người vừa phi tự nhiên, đùa chẳng vui vừa đầy mùi ái muội.

"Tối nay nhé, tớ sẽ lấy đầu mẩu thuốc trộn với cơm làm thuốc đắp cho cậu."
"Chỉ cần về đến nhà trọ thì sẽ ổn, nhưng mà..."
"Lúc phải đi bộ thì cậu khổ sở lắm, đúng không?"
"Ừ."
"Gay thật nhỉ!..."

Ừ, gay thật đó. Giả như hai cậu ái muội thật đi thì đã tự nhiên, nhưng đọc cả tác phẩm toàn thoại nó đều viết thế này chứ chẳng liên quan gì đến BL thì gượng gạo, kịch khủng khiếp.

"Những trường đoạn đối đáp của họ không chỉ thể hiện không khí căng thẳng khốc liệt của thiên nhiên vào ngày núi lửa và bão tố hoành hành mà còn cho thấy những xung đột xã hội gay gắt âm u."

Lời giới thiệu hơi quá hoặc do mình không cảm được. Không khí không đủ căng thẳng mà xung đột xã hội cũng không đủ sâu, nghe Kei lảm nhảm giống thanh niên cay cú sự đời hơn. Có lẽ nếu mình là con nhà bán đậu phụ sống ở Nhật thế kỷ XX thì mình mới hiểu được?

Cuối cùng ấn tượng nhất với mình là món trứng chỉ luộc chín một nửa. Chấm hết.

The 210th Day ( 二百十日 ) is my second Natsume Souseki’s novella. I was planning to read this book for my Japanese Literature Challenge 3, but somehow it always got push by other books. In the end, I read this for my Japanese Literature Challenge 4.

The book is very thin, only 100 pages including introduction by Marvin Marcus. There is not much to tell about this book because most of the story consists of long dialogue by the two main characters. This is my first time reading a book that emphasizes more on the dialogue rather than the explanation of the surrounding or the thought of the main characters. Most dialogues are written one after another without explaining who is the one speaking at the moment, so if I lost track of the dialogue I need to go back a little to see who made the conversation first. However, the more I read it the more I understand who is speaking at the moment.

To be honest, It's not easy to grab the essence of this book. It's short, packed with dialogues of two men on a holiday at Aso canton and their hike on Mt. Aso.

It's more like a short memorabilia of the writer's own experience. It's stated in the introduction that it's a minor work of Soseki and more like an experiment. I agree with the later.

All that I could conclude is that by the end of the story, the son of the tofu maker has won over his well-born friend, succesfully pursuaded him to hike on Mt. Aso, twice, despite the circumstances. I could only think that Soseki wanted to softly show this little winning, that you could win the sides of upper-class people through a good communication, friendship, and strong will.
