Rate this book
A struggling psychic girl steps out into the big, wide world amidst the murky depths of racial segregation in England, 1961.

As a teenage psychic, Josephine Fontaine knows what it’s like to be different. At Peregrine Place, a school full of youngsters with gifts just like hers, sixteen-year-old Josie is growing tired of her life and looking for excitement beyond the grand manor house’s walls. When an opportunity arises to work in a local music bar, she jumps at the chance, learning to balance her new job with the pressures of studying the ways of the Synsk.

There she meets the charming Tommy Asher, a fellow psychic with a talent for music, and Jake Bolton, a handsome, surly stranger with coffee-coloured skin. Throw in the return of her old crush Dai Bickerstaff, and Josie finds herself embroiled in a drama much bigger than she could have imagined, especially when certain parties take issue to her developing a friendship with a boy who isn’t white-skinned. When a mysterious record mogul offers Josie help to improve her psychic gifts, her world turns totally upside down, and she begins to question everything she thought she knew about the world, her family, and even herself.
Coming of age was never so intense as it will be for Josie in the winter of 1961.

Josie has always been different, a psychic teen caught between childhood and adulthood in an era of racial tensions and segregation. For Josie, coming of age is a harsh lesson taught too quickly.

Among students with gifts like hers at Peregrine Place is great, but sometimes a teen just needs ‘more,’ a place to spread one’s wings and to be part of the outside world. Little did Josie know that first flight could bring so much joy, confusion and pain, as she struggles to face it all head on in a world filled with hatred, deceit, hope and emotional turmoil far beyond anything she was ready for.

A Place Halfway by K.C. Finn is more than a paranormal tale of a teen in transition. K.C. Finn brings real life drama to her tale as she tackles one of life’s worst demons, racial prejudice, as well as the machinations of one man who hides his identity from her, gains her trust, answers a lifelong dream, and then breaks her heart with the truth. If not for the mysterious and edgy boy who worked at the musicbar with her, Josie would never know what love and caring could be, but first she had to break through the chaos she heard in his mind to find the young man who had golden dreams of his own and a voice to match.

K.C. Finn tackles tough issues and does it with bold strokes, never backing down from the details that will have you clenching your gut or opening your eyes to the real world that existed over fifty years ago, and still hasn’t been conquered to this day. Her paranormal take on being different is a fresh, yet sometimes gritty look with dark edges and shadows, as she guides us through what being “different” really means to more than the students at Peregrine Place. Start to finish, this is a magnetic read filled with all of the elements of great reading for more than just paranormal fans!

I received this copy from K.C Finn in exchange for my honest review.

I got lucky enough to receive an ARC from the author, K.C. Finn for an honest review
The whole SYNSK series has just been amazing from book one, The Mind's Eye. Leighton's Summer continued five years later from The Mind's Eye, after World War II. A Place Halfway jumps to 1961.
Josie is 16 years and physic. She has powers that she inherited from her father that was unknown to her. She decides that she wants to get a job at a new place opening up in town close to the boarding school that was started by Kit and Leighton's parents for children with special abilities.
During the 1960's America was experiencing many race riots. It was a horrible time here in the United States, but also at the time England was experiencing its own race riots.
Josie read of story of a black man getting beat up and left to die. She was horrified about the events. When she gets a job in town, she meets Noah and Jake, who are black. She finds out that they were related to man that was killed.
Josie has been caught up on Dai Bickerstaff She secretly hoped that he would finally notice her. But after she comes to know Jake, many things change. She knows she is falling for him, but Jake isn't sure that it is right for them to be together will all the race riots going on.
I got an education. I never knew that England experienced its own race riots like the United States did during the 1960's. But this book was just amazing. K.C. Finn brought back many of the characters from the first two books but still made this book its own story. It could be read alone, but the series is just amazing. It took a turn that I didn't expect to with Josie. I am looking forward to the next book in the series that she comes out with.

I thought than no book in this series could compete with book 1. I was right with book 2 but boy did this book make its mark!! The pace kept fast; the suspense continued and the words just jumped out of the page.

I especially enjoyed the jump in time so that we were following the kids of our previous favourite characters! Visiting how their lives were years later was interesting and the relationships between them all still keep you with a constant smirk on your face, especially when the relationships between the kids were affected by this.

A Place Halfway is the third instalment in a must-read series. Due to the time shifts they could be read as stand-alones but I personally feel that you would be missing out on the character's dynamics if you didn't read them in order :) Happy reading everyone!!

A Place Halfway is the third installment in the very unusual SYSNSK series. In theory these are supposed to be able to work as "stand alone" reads and with the gap in years you could probably get a lot out of it reading it by itself but my advice would be to start at the beginning with the Mind's Eye (especially as that is a free read and I guarantee you will want to read more!

Book 3 has more of a feel to me that book 1 had and I loved it! I was immediately sucked back in time and I LOVED the connections made later in the series to the earlier books (which is why I think you will miss out starting here).

The characters are vibrant and I swear at times the scenes are so well written you can HEAR the music! Amazing! Definitely a series to add to your list!

Josie is a teenager with special "half-way" powers. This is a good continuation of The Mind's Eye and Leighton's Summer, bringing all the characters back. It ended kind of abruptly, I would have liked it go go on a little longer and tie the relationship with Josie's mother and father up a little more.

Josie's story was awesome. A unique story for a unique girl. :) I love the music atmosphere Josie's story was wrapped in and I love how K.C. Finn in each fiction story of the SYNSK series introduces us to a serious aspect in life along with the psychic abilities of her characters and the adventure they are in.
In "The Mind's Eye" her main character is fighting with a sickness that has her cripple on a wheelchair and a way to walk again.
In "Leighton's Summer" through her secondaries characters we get glimpses to orphan's lives and war post traumatic lives.
And now In "A Place Halfway" we are introduce to the discrimination colored people experienced in earlier years.
I love how K.C. Finn enriches her stories with many aspects of life! SYNSK stories are really Beautiful ones. X-Men quality in their own unique way.

Wow! My favorite in the Synsk series so far, and that is saying a lot, because I really loved the first two books. Josie is such a wonderful heroine. She's brave, smart, and loving. She fiercely protects those around her, and she sees the world in a way that I wish more people did. Jake and Noah are so likeable. I was rooting for those boys almost from the moment I met them.

I love how Ms. Finn continues to bring in the characters from the earlier books. It's great to see where they are now, and their families. Truly, this is a can't miss read!

Fine. They were great, whatever.

I REALLY didn't expect to like these books. I totally liked these books.

This one was interesting- race in England and the reactions of those from WW2 to white supremacists and the issues of interracial dating...just well done!

All three focus on two things without really pounding you in the head with it- when bad things happen, are you the type who runs or the type who stands up for what's right? and family. Family in all and many forms, including the one you make yourself.

Anyway, yeah, they're good, whatever ;)

Enjoy!
