As a "guide" to self-discovery around your learning styles, critical thinking, and achieving academic success, this easy-to-read book takes a broad and very practical approach to defining, understanding, and mastering the tools needed for academic success at a postsecondary level. I worked my way through it over a semester at college, where the course is required as part of the General Certificate for Arts and Sciences - which I need to complete to "catch up" with science prior to studying astrophysics.

While the discussions in class around the topics in the book were at least as helpful as the text, I think all the case studies, examples, exercises, and self-diagnostic tools would work well for someone going through this book by themselves. Also, I think that this book can be used by beginners as well as "experienced" students like myself - it worked well as a refresher for things I had forgotten since my last experience at university (which was quite some time ago!).

If you need a book to help you develop strategies for succeeding academically, if you are willing to be honest with yourself and have an open mind about learning new things, and if you're looking for a guide to answer the questions of how to "learn effectively', then I can recommend this book.

I had to read this for a course in college. Even though I was a transfer student, I found this book very helpful for not only succeeding in college but also succeeding in life. It has a lot of useful information in the book and I recommend it to anyone who is starting out in school or even in the middle of their education. This is an excellent resource and I will be keeping this book for future reference.
