Ugly Duckling

Rate this book
It wasn’t easy being considered the ugly friend.

She’s known since she was young that life wouldn’t be easy, and that she would have to work hard for everything she got. Life was tough when you had a face that only a mother could love.

For years, Sutton Sway goes through life knowing that she’s never going to have a happily ever after that she’s always dreamed of. So she settles. She marries not for love, but for companionship, choosing a man that she never should’ve looked twice at, all so she could have a family of her own.

That family never happens, and within a year, she’s divorced and right back where she started.

Just when she’s at her all-time low, thinking life couldn’t get much worse, in walks Gunner Penn.

Gunner Penn, her protector. The man that saved her from all her high school bullies and proved to her that there were good men in this world.

He was the man that she’d compared all other men to, and probably always would.

But he’s not the Gunner she remembers. He’s harder, less forgiving, and a whole lot less happy.
He hates everyone and everything and doesn’t care who he offends.

That hate and anger for the world and its occupants doesn’t seem to include her, though.
No, Gunner Penn doesn’t hate her at all.

In fact, he’s loved her since high school. She was just too traumatized by life to see it.
But she sees it now. She feels it. She lives and breathes it.

Gunner Penn lost her once. But he won’t lose her a second time.

Not if there’s breath left in his body.

I was going to wait to read this, but I just couldn’t help myself. I started and then just got hooked. Sutton, OMG she had such time. First in high school, being bullied and then she married a total douchecanoe… And what happened at her wedding, freaking hell, I would have killed him…

Running into Gunner again, while she was running a race, was such a good thing for her and Gunner. They just seem to fit together so well. Being with Gunner and Lottie made her grow so much and start believing in herself.

Gunner had such a terrible life growing up. Losing his son made such an impact in his life. And then finding out he has a daughter made a change for him. And adding Sutton to it just made it so much better.

So much drama, a bit of suspense. And so much chemistry between them that just makes feel all the good feels. And of course others that doesn’t want them to be happy! But as usual the MC family is right there helping every step of the way 😊Loved the story, loved the romance, loved the drama, and absolutely loved little Lottie 😊

A lot of telling, not showing here. And the blurb describing the MMC is completely inaccurate. I liked the sample and purchased this book with my own money. It went downhill after that. Everything is very surface level and not much meat to the story. And the three year old spoke like a 6 year old, which is a big pet peeve of mine in books. I don't think this author's writing style is for me.

ARC Review of Ugly Duckling by Lani Lynn Vale
* * * * *
This romance read has all the steaminess, dreaminess, and drama you need. These lovers get a second chance in happiness, opening up about their feelings towards one another, reaching their dreams, and a little bit or revenge against those who deserve it.

Sutton was the ugly duckling, and she knew it. The constant mockery and redicule and abuse has followed her all her life from strangers to school bullies and even her ex. Even after some changes, she still believes she's not good enough in the looks department, thus focuses on her career.
Never in a million years did she think she would hook up with her school's former golden boy.
Gunner had it all once upon a time. A son who loved him, aspirations and a clear plan to a path in baseball. That was until he lost the most important person in his life, and his passion was lost to a drive that would better his existance. Now, with his daughter and trying to be the best father possible - considering the circumstances.
A long time ago, he was in love with the 'ugly duckling', who he always considered to be the beautiful girl that had heart and strength. Now, he gets a shot at keeping her in his life and just maybe be a little more than friends.

This is my first dive into the series and now I just want to read the first five books! The background of all the stuff I have missed just makes me want to uncover what else there could have been, especially with Gunner's MC background and those surrounding it.
Sutton has very few people in her corner until she gets more involved with Gunner. She starts to open up to the idea that she is not totally hideous and accepts that she is beautiful in his eyes.
Steamy scenes are spicy for sure!
The exes are crazy, the family chaos is wild, and divorce really does come with some interesting payments.

This is book 6 in the Content Advisory series, but can be read as a standalone even though some prior events are mentioned. I'd recommend this if you are in the mood for a medium spice MC club adjacent story about two people finally building a life together.

Overall, I rate it 4⭐out of 5 based on the following: 🤩Enjoyment - 4; 👥Characters - 4; 📖Plot - 3.5; 🗺️Atmosphere - 3.5; and🖋️Writing - 3.5 with the first 3 categories being most important.

What worked for me:
• Gunner's actions when they were kids and how he was determined to keep anyone else from experiencing the loss he did years ago.
• Sutton working to come to terms with her own insecurities.

I knew, I knew Gunner’s story was just going to break my heart. And it did. You think you know what’s coming and then BAM, curveball (pun intended). Gunner and Sutton grew up together, and he was basically her protector and he didn’t even know it standing in between her and her bullies. They lost touch for years, she got married and then divorced, and they are reconnecting at a marathon that his MC dared him to run. Will they be able to reconnect and pace their relationship with all the hurdles staining in their way?

In the last book Gunner found out a secret that blew his world apart. Now he’s living with the repercussions of his actions he can’t even remember.

Sutton Sway and Gunner went to school together. He always took up for her with the school bully’s. They were ment to be. It just took them many years to figure it out for themselves.

Crazy exes and evil are trying to hurt them but this club takes care of their own.
I had tears in my eyes more than once while I was reading this one. Emotional and heartbreaking but a HEA to die for!!

📖Genre & Tropes📖 : biker romance x childhood friends x friends to lovers x toxic ex plot x single dad x spicy

J'ai trouvé ça un peu "too much" ! Et finalement il ne se passait pas grand chose dans le livre ... J'aurais voulu quelque chose de plus signifiant, notamment dans leur relation !

Bref, une romance sympa mais pas inoubliable !

⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐

A biker romance that's a good read, but nothing special !!

I must admit that, unlike this author's other series, this one unfortunately left me rather indifferent ... And yet, I had high hopes for this volume because we FINALLY get Gunner's story (Parker's nephew, whose Maybe Don't Wanna volume is BRILLIANT !!), and I was super excited !

But even though the romance was nice ... I don't know ... I found the "bad guys" ridiculous, and the fact that the heroine is convinced she's hideous (when it's not true and there's no real reason behind her view of things) and that her ex gets away with what he did to her at her wedding ... I found it a bit "too much" ! And ultimately, not much happened in the book ... I would have liked something more meaningful, especially in their relationship !

In short, a nice but not unforgettable romance !

Sutton and Gunner may just be my series favourites.

Sutton has not lived an easy life. Despite being the most successful athlete in high school she was bullied to the point her self esteem was buried 6ft deep with her 6th distant grandma. Even worse she decides to settle in marriage because she wants to the dream of kids and her husband? .. dear fucking jesus that piece of crusty ass. Safe to say to poor woman deserved a break. She was smart, funny, strong and beautiful and thank the gods above Gunner saw that. Even if Sutton couldn't see it.

Gunner loved on Sutton from the time he first met her but he was young dumb and full of cum so lets say he didn't make good choices and then became a dad young and his priorities shifted. But he always saw her beauty, her determination and her kindness and never saw the ugly she was drowning in. He was sweet and thoughtful and genuinely just a nice guy despite being wildly popular and talented and even after the loss of his son he still was so freaking sweet.

Man this story is definitely a heart breaker with some serious subject matter that has effected so many. The loss of Gunners son and how he turned that tragedy into a reason to fight harder to protect schools had my heart breaking because that shit is real. Then him becoming a dad again unexpectedly and battling the overwhelming guilt, mourning and love was just heart-breaking and healing all in one. The dad that this man is is just something else. Then the bullying aspect and just how brutal words can be and the long lasting effect that they had on a woman who did nothing to anyone had my heart breaking all over again and yet despite it all she was not jaded or angry. Sutton held herself so well and was so deserving of the kind of love she would never have to question.

Sutton and Gunner together had me swooning and laughing hard. The way they just melded together and fit fit perfectly. The banter, the teasing.. the love and all the spice. I was here for every second. I love this series and these characters and this was another great addition and probably my favourite of the series. Also the secondary characters... as per were fantastic and added so much to an all ready great book. Now I cannot wait for Apollo's story!.

5 They Both Shouldn’t Doubt Themselves Stars!!

We’re taken on a very emotional journey with this newest book by LLV. Gunner and Sutton have known each other for what seems life forever. However, they lost contact right after high school not really giving it another thought. Gunner had so much going on as a teen single father, trying to make it to the MLB and everything in between. What neither of them knew though is that they each had a crush on the other. Oh the teen angst, especially for Sutton. This girl went through so much in high school. My heart truly hurt for her as I could empathize with what she went through.

Imagine their shock several years later when they end up in a race together… Sutton on purpose and Gunner on a dare. I have to say I was chuckling out loud while reading this part of the book. I mean he’s just so confident that he could do what he was dared to do by his brothers and their wives. When these two reconnect it was truly epic.

So many changes have happened in their lives. Sutton has experienced life altering physical changes and Gunner had a sweeping tragedy that changed every single thing about him and how he lives his life. We get so many details that LLV has been holding back until this book. I was weeping so much that I had to stop reading for a few minutes. This book is filled with so many moments of emotional and physical connection, witty banter, laugh out loud moments at some of the audacity of his crew and the suspenseful twist was so good!

I truly fell in love with these two and the way they both helped each heal from devastating events and moments in their lives but also understanding that those are the moments that will linger in their lives and hearts forever.

Whew! Gunner and Sutton are fire!

Listen. Ive been a fan of Lani's for years. I started pre-ordering and reading her books in 2014 or 2015. I cannot remember the year to be honest. Each book and series she writes; just gets better and better! You see a lot of past characters make appearances in this story. Gunner's uncle is Parker Penn from Maybe Don't Wanna. Tommy and Tally from Fear the Beard. The whole Uncertain Saints MC makes a cameo as well as other Content Avisory characters, some from The Carter Brothers series and the Semyonov Bratva. Im sure there are some I even missed.

Lani is so talented and works so hard to incorporate all of the characters of the past as well as building the new lives of the current and future characters.

What I loved about Gunner and Sutton is their back story. Sutton's beauty is not skin deep. Her beauty is from within and you can see that is what Gunner saw in her aswell.

We are often our own worse critic when it comes to our bodies and our beauty. When I imagine Sutton before the accident, I don't see her in my mind as "ugly".

Lani also did a great job of showing the reader how words hurt more than physical injury can. She brings to light every parents worse nightmare when it comes to violence in the schools. While reading Gunner's story about what happened to his son was difficult, it gets the reader thinking but also gets them in the feels.

Well done! Highly recommend this book and all of her others!

This one of those series that just keeps getting better and better with each book. Before I get started I wish to tell people reading this that while you don’t have to read the books in order, I strongly suggest it. It will make for a much greater reading experience. Sutton has always felt like the “Ugly Duckling”. She feels like she is no beauty by any means, especially after all the ridicule she took from the kids while growing up. So now she focuses everything on her career and doesn’t hope for any kind of relationship. Gunner lost his young son in a senseless school shooting. He now runs a company that travels to schools in hopes of setting up a security system for them. He doesn’t want many parents to have to feel the devastation he felt. If you read the prior book, you know that Gunner has recently found out he has a young daughter. A young girl he has been around, as his club brother has been raising her, but it’s only been recently determined she is in fact Gunners. But Gunner needs help with her. When he bumps into the girl he always thought was the prettiest girl in school with a heart of gold, he thinks it’s fate. But convincing Sutton isn’t an easy task. Will Gunner convince her to stay and be a family with him and his precocious little girl?

This is an excellent read. Like I said above, I can't recommend this series enough. Grab them up asap, you won’t be sorry you did.

Yet again, Lani Lynn Vale does not disappoint with Ugly Duckling, the sixth book in her mesmerising Content Advisory series. This story is heartfelt, emotional, and packed with the trademark intensity Vale delivers every single time.

Sutton spent her childhood and young adult years being called ugly, finding her only solace in running—and in her friendship with Gunner, her protector and safe place. But tragedy struck Gunner, changing the course of his life forever. Years later, fate steps in when they cross paths at a run, and their reunion ignites something neither of them can ignore.

Gunner is no longer the boy she once knew. Hardened by pain and shaped by his time in the MC, he’s angry at the world but fiercely loyal to his brothers and family. Yet when he sees Sutton again, something inside him begins to thaw. She might just be the one capable of breaking through the walls he’s spent years building. What Sutton doesn’t realise is that Gunner always had a crush on the girl who never saw her own beauty.

Passion sizzles on every page as Sutton and Gunner rediscover what it means to truly see—and be seen. Sutton is radiant, strong, and the light Gunner didn’t know he needed. Ugly Duckling is another captivating, emotional must-read that reminds us love can heal even the deepest scars.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the story of Sutton and Gunner. She is a girl who has known all her life that she would never be the girl who got the happily ever after. But that doesn't stop her from dreaming of one. Since she has convinced herself it will never happen, she is married to a man she would never have looked twice at for just some companionship. All she wants is a family of her very own. But, that wasn't meant to be and she was divorced before her marriage really even had a chance to be something, if it ever would have been. Now she is at her lowest point and the last person she ever expected to see was Gunner. A blast from the past that protected her from her bullies in high school. The first person to ever show her that not everyone in the world is cruel. But he has changed. Now he hates everyone and everything and isn't afraid to offend anyone. Well anyone who isn't Sutton.
I couldn't wait to get Gunner's story in my hand. But it sure wasn't what I was expecting. We all know that a huge secret blew his world apart and now we are witness to what that all meant. But I loved that he and Sutton reconnected thanks to a marathon he was dared to run. These two have some serious chemistry. This book has lots of drama and some suspense in it. But it is a book you won't lay down.

This is the story of Sutton and Gunner. Sutton, a girl who has always believed she would never have a happily ever after, still dreams of finding love and starting a family. Despite her doubts, she marries a man for companionship but ends up divorced before their relationship can truly develop. At her lowest point, she unexpectedly reunites with Gunner, who once protected her from bullies in high school and showed her kindness in a cruel world. I was eager to read Gunner's story. Gunner's life was shattered by a devastating secret, and we witness the aftermath of this revelation.

The reconnection between Gunner and Sutton, sparked by a reveal of their intense chemistry. This book is filled with drama, suspense, and a compelling storyline that will keep you hooked until the end. The friends were great and supportive, and engaging. Their daughter was a little heartmelter.

This was an emotional story that readers can relate to. Both characters have suffered greatly. We loved these two as a couple; they were truly meant for one another. You experienced their pain that these characters carried throughout the story. We found that this story does not have as much humor as this author's books normally have; it was more about emotional healing, mending old wounds, moving on, and allowing yourself to be happy without the pain weighing you down. We loved it!

Before I get lost in the review of the actual book, can I just give a shout out to the author for the dedication in this book as it hit right where it was supposed to and had me overwhelmed with emotion even before I had read the first page of the story. Gunner had not had it easy, first losing a son and then finding out he had a daughter when he swore he never wanted to be a parent again after such a heart wrenching loss. When a bet with his club has him running into a woman from his past he might have just one more than he could have ever hoped for. Gunner and Sutton were meant to be as far as I was concerned, however it was years of bullying and low self esteem that might have just kept these two apart for so long. As the chemistry and connection lights up between these two Gunner will stop at nothing to show Sutton just how beautiful inside and out that he has always found her. A story that is filled with drama, passion and hilarious moments that will find you unable to put this book down. I found it very easy to relate to Sutton character and Gunner stole my heart easily with how he was with Lottie and in the ways he showed Sutton how important she was too him. A story that shows you how sometimes you can turn a negative event into a positive one.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Gunner & Sutton: triggers- body dysmorphic disorder, bullying, school shooting, attempted kidnapping, assault, blackmail, bribery, stalking, cancer, betrayal, and drugs. I mean… *sniff sniff* I just can't. Finally getting the full story about Jett from Gunner’s POV just damn near broke my heart. Especially with everything that's happening with schools these days. And this is not a spoiler because bits and pieces about Jett have been released throughout the series and I believe this is why LLV did it. This book’s conflict wasn't as nearly as dark as the previous books’ or previous series’ but it gives the book its due justice. I think we've been waiting on a conclusion with these particular antagonists and we finally got it. The shocker and plot twist of the new antagonist for the story is what got me because LLV basically tripled down on her readers so we did not know who was coming from what angle. Excellent work. I loved Gunner and Sutton. You could really tell from the beginning just how he felt for her and vice versa. He was good for her self esteem. She was good for him too in helping him to grieve and continue to live. Good book. Great read.

Ugly Duckling is book 6 in the Content Advisory series, and it focuses on the characters Sutton and Gunner. Both characters knew each other from high school and whilst both excelled, Sutton was bullied relentlessly and believed that she was always the ugly duckling. Whilst Gunner, becomes a single teen parent and goes through his own trials and tribulations, not only through the loss of his son, but also gaining a new child and building a relationship with her. Sutton and Gunner meet each other again late on in life through their running and there we see their bonds redevelop and become stronger.

What both of these characters have been through it heartbreaking, and it is well written in regard to the loss of a child and also how self esteem can have a disfiguring effect on your mental health for the majority of your life. I loved how strong both Gunner and Sutton were and how this was a slow romance until it wasn’t. Another great addition to the series, with just enough drama, spiciness and great characters to keep you wanting more.

ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊

Whew! This one is definitely one of LLV’s more emotional stories. I just KNEW Gunner’s book would break me, but dang! The number of times I shed tears while reading this one

Gunner and Sutton have reconnected since they lost touch after high school and the sparks literally fly. The way these two have always been drawn to each other is just intensified now that they are older. There is a lot of emotional and physical growth within this story. Gunner finding out he has a daughter after he swore off having more children after losing his son. Being bullied her whole entire life, Sutton has no self esteem. The way Gunner is with her is heart melting. And the way she and Lottie take to each other is heartwarming. The way his MC family welcomes her with open arms is a beautiful thing.

I have never lost a child and cannot even fathom the thought. The way LLV brings to words the heartache that Gunner felt and the way she describes the school shooting had tears streaming down my face. Her stories always feel real and she is definitely not shy about putting her characters through the wringer. I loved the epilogue and I’ve just got one thing to say….Dr. Tommy! IYKYK

a must read, it is outstandingly wonderful

I adore the series and this book is my favorite so far. Of course I loved each book in this series. An old friend from high school reunites with his favorite girl friend from high school. While in high school, he lost his son in an armed attack at his son’s school. To lose a child in such a senseless act, is devastating. The whole incident was written beautifully so we understood the “if only” feelings and the horrendous loss felt by his family and the “what can I do now”.

The girl from high school felt unattractive and was bullied. Due to her ex husband inconsiderate actions she was severely damaged and had to have reconstructive surgery. She continued on from the high school track team to become an avid runner in the Olympics. They meet again and the attraction is intense.

There are several hideous “ex” friends who try to make their lives miserable. Thanks to friends, family including the MC family, they get their HEA. I adore this story and look forward to getting the audible version. Highly recommend this book! HEA, no cheating, no cliffhanger. Enjoy this one. Looking forward to getting book 7 next, already preordered.

A second chance for first love

Gunner is amazing, and we have lived through his loss of Jett and what Angel Security do, right through this series - it never gets any easier to read about. We also got to see him find out Lottie was his daughter, the mix of shock, fear and hope was both difficult and heartwarming and many tears fell as I read it. So to see them now and the relationship and bond the two have formed is really beautiful. But we see another side to his personality when he is with Sutton and we finally see him claiming something for himself. Life stopped Gunner and Sutton being together when they were younger, but fate has brought them back together and now is their time. They both have insecurities, they both have baggage, and unfortunately they both have crazy people from their past trying to steal their happiness and their future. But they are awesome together, they ride out the crazy by supporting each other, they push each other to reach the goals they strive for and they love Lottie and each other with every bit of love in their hearts. I LOVE IT!
Although I love this whole series, so no surprise I enjoyed this too!

This is the 6th book in this brilliant series from Lani and OMG I was waiting for Gunners story and she did not disappoint me! Gunners story was everything! He has been through so much, so much pain and heartbreak but was finally starting to heal with little Lottie in his life, he just needed his soulmate, to make it all complete.

I loved Sutton, she has been through so much herself but is stronger then she thinks. She went to high school with Gunner, he was her protector through a lot of the bullying she endured. She was desperate for a family and even settled with an idiot man to achieve this. Soon as Gunner and Sutton meet back up again running a marathon the sparks are flying and he is now going to go for the girl he wants!!

Lani did a phenomenal job with this one, she made me cry with both Gunner and Suttons stories but she made me laugh and swoon with the rest of their tales! It was a beautiful story of heartbreak, grief, healing, found family, friendships, love and undeniable, red hot chemistry making this a complete page turner!!

I was gifted a copy of this book by the Author and this is my honest opinion

Another great 'meant to be' romance in the Content Advisory series. This book is the turn of Gunner. He above all deserves his HEA. He has been such an engaging character through the earlier books, having lost his son to a high school shooting and then finding himself dad to Lottie out of the blue. Gunner needed someone strong but with a big heart to help him live with the trauma and understand his passion for making schools safer. His high school friend, Sutton, is that person.

I think the title is a bit misleading. I dont believe for a second Sutton was unattractive. I think she was dealt a bad hand with bullies that ruined her self-esteem. However, she does blossom once she finds her confidence with Gunner and Lottie. She finds new purpose and heals her heart.

These two have great chemistry, and I kinda loved that she discovered so many new things physically with Gunner. Without the hang-ups and negativity, Sutton finds freedom.

I loved their story, and I loved their HEA even more.

Filled to the brim with emotion and heart! Lani Lynn Vale is the queen of wrapping a couple around a reader's heart time and time again. Just when you think you can't love a pair of her characters more, she comes along with the next one to steal your adoration away ... but I don't mind being fickle on occasion! If you've been reading along with her always entertaining Content Advisory series, you will recognize the hero of this story from Audric's story. Gunnar has had a lot of turmoil in his life, but the precious cargo he was handed recently has changed his life for the better. Running into Sutton after all of these years only adds to his enjoyment of current times. I loved their connection from the past, and the fact that they still feel the draw to each other rather quickly. Lots of drama, equal amounts of sass and so much love all around their world makes for a really great read. I'm loving the guys of this series so much and the women they fall head over heals for are simply perfect additions to the fam. Can't wait for Apollo's story!

I could relate to the Ugly Duckling term that Sutton had in high school. I felt that way myself. We also get to see Gunner and how he met or knew Sutton. Sutton's story made me want to cry. My heart seized up as I read her backstory. I think back to high school and the boys I dated, and I could see one of them in Gunner, with how he treats Sutton. Gunner's story about his son really hit me in the feels. I work in Education, and that scenario really scares me in this day and age, given the current state of affairs in the United States. I love that Gunner getting to know his daughter helps bring him back into the light a bit. I only wish there were more real-life people like Gunner and what he does for a living. Be prepared to have this story hit you in the feels, just as it did for me. Have tissues handy! If you are starting with this book, I recommend going back and starting with book 1 first. Reading this series in order is definitely worth it. It can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading from the beginning. Enjoy the read!

Sway Sutton knows she's not the prettiest and believes no one will ever want her. But to me, she's beautiful and makes this story that much more powerful. As an ugly duckling myself, Sway made me feel seen reading her story. Another person who always saw her was Gunner Penn. These two went to school together, competed to see who was the best runner, and they were always in each other's orbits. When life happens and Gunner loses his son, his world is turned upside down. But he will do whatever he can to make sure that no other parent suffers his fate. Sometimes, however, fate has a way of throwing things back at you. For Gunner, that was a race that brought him face-to-face with the one woman who had always been in his mind and heart. She doesn't look the same, but her sass knows no bounds. When Sway sees Gunner for the first time in years, she realizes he's about to become more than just a friend. I loved these two. I loved reading about the devastation and healing Gunner has been experiencing. And I loved how effortlessly they clicked.

This is the sixth book in the Content Advisory series. They are stand alones, but we get to see all the members of the Truth Tellers MC in every book.

Now Gunner's story started in a different series, years ago. It was his uncle Parker's book (I'm so sorry I can't remember the name right now, it's been awhile).

Be prepared, this book will gut you. You will still have laughs. But you'll also be sobbing.

*Make sure you have a full box of tissues for chapter 23.

Both Sutton and Gunner are great characters that I absolutely love.

I really don't have a ton to say. I've sat on writing this review for over a week. And I know my words won't do this book justice.

I already knew what had happened to Gunner, but I still wasn't fully prepared for it in this book.

It is such a great read.

"Today we're going to stay hydrated and ignore people who give us high blood pressure."

"I may not put a twinkle in your eyes, but I can put that WTF crease in your forehead."

"Might give out a few free samples of my attitude today. Limited edition. No refund."

I have been hoping that Gunner would get his story and Lani Lynn Vale did not disappoint. I absolutely loved this story. Sutton is someone I can relate to and the way she was bullied, then she settles for what she feels she deserves. My heart went out to Sutton and all she faced, she deserved so much more... in walks Gunner back into her life. Gunner wow, did he go through it with Jett and was slapped in the face by life. His story broke my heart so much and I loved how Parker was there for him. Then there is sweet little Lottie whom I think healed both Gunner and Sutton more than they are aware. This story was so emotional and good, not to mention throw in some cray cray peeps in the mix with a devoted MC family, then you have the perfect story. I can't wait for more in this series and more from Lani Lynn Vale, bring it on girl I am ready!!!!

This book completely won me over, and I can honestly say I loved every single page. The chemistry between Gunner and the FMC was intense, believable, and so easy to root for. Their connection carried the story beautifully, and it never once felt forced.

That said, the real star for me was Lottie. She was absolutely adorable. Her presence added such a sweetness and charm that made the whole book even more enjoyable.

I loved how well-balanced the story was. The author wove in everything I look for in a great romance. There is friendship, strong relationships, plenty of heart, some laugh-out-loud moments, and those emotional beats that hit just right. She really has a way of pulling you into her characters’ lives, and my heart especially went out to Gunner, Theo, and Apollo.

Honestly, this might be my favourite book in the series so far.
I absolutely enjoyed reading it, and I’m already looking forward to the next book.

When she was a teenager Sutton was on the receiving end of bullying and teasing for the way she looked, and she believed it as well. Her one escape was her skill on the track and Gunner was the one person who tried to protect her however life took the in different directions which included a divorce from a man she never should have married.

In high school Gunner appeared to have it all and was destined for a career in professional baseball. Finding out that he was about to be a teenage father didn’t deter him until tragedy struck and left a gaping hole. Fate has given him a second chance both when it comes to being a father and being part of Sutton’s life and he isn’t about to let anything happen to destroy it.

Sutton and Gunnar have always belonged together and the connection between them is unparalleled. With every challenge they help each other heal from the past both when it comes to what they have been through and their past romantic mistakes.

Lani Lynn Vale does it again—this one hit me right in the feels. Gunner’s story—grappling with past grief over Jett while unexpectedly stepping into fatherhood with his daughter—was achingly tender and beautifully handled. Every scene with his little girl made me melt.

Sutton’s arc is equally powerful. The book gives her real depth (and the anger I felt about what she endured is real), and her reunion with Gunner—sparked in part by a cheeky MC bet—felt utterly inevitable and earned. There are moments of surprising twists and a couple of characters I wanted to throat-punch, which only made the payoff feel sweeter.

A moving, satisfying addition to the series with strong emotional stakes, great character growth, and some closure on one matter we all needed.

Thank you Lani Lynn Vale and Give Me Books Promotions for providing an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
