Salem Spirits #5

G Is for Ghost

Rate this book
A routine school visit. A dearly departed teacher. Can an amateur sleuth ace a ghostly pop quiz before the final bell tolls?

Clara Kelly is ready to inspire young minds. While speaking to Salem High School seniors about starting her own bed-and-breakfast, she’s startled to find an unexpected—and very transparent—attendee. A history teacher’s sudden passing seems peaceful to everyone else, but Clara knows better … because his murdered ghost is standing right in front of her!

With her grand opening just weeks away, Clara has her hands full finishing renovations on her haunted B&B—complete with its own resident ghost, William Kensington, an innocent Civil War soldier branded a traitor. Between tracking down a slippery reporter who promised to help clear William’s name and nervously preparing for her first date in more than a decade, she hardly has time for spectral sleuthing. But with the ethereal educator lingering like an ungraded test, Clara must school a killer before the case gets buried in the history books.

Can Clara uncover the truth and help the teacher graduate to the next realm in peace? Or will this case prove that some ghosts cannot be dismissed?

G Is for Ghost is the light-hearted fifth book in the Salem Spirits Cozy Mysteries series. If you like endearing characters, unexpected journeys, and stories with a lot of heart, then you’ll love Dina Marie’s twist of fate.

I can not stop reading this series. I think this was the best book in this series, so far. There is so much paranormal activity going on. Mixed in with every day chaos. The characters are very likable. The story flows flawlessly. Along with humor, peppered in here and there. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Coerced into speaking at a high school event, Clara Kelly is dismayed when an octogenarian teacher is found dead. Given his advanced age, it is to be expected, but the ghost left behind suggests he has unfinished business. Charmed by this humble, yet pedantic, educator, Clara embarks on a mission to find his murderer.

This is the fifth book in the Salem Spirits Cozy Mysteries series, and the series continues to improve from strength to strength. It is so easy to slip into this world and relate to the characters within it. The main character, Clara, remains as warm as ever, and her relationships with the ghostly William, Ghost Cat, and Boy flourish. Her connection with the new ghost is delightful, while her feud with the newspaper reporter is frustrating and realistic.

The resolution to the mystery was surprisingly uplifting, as was the story itself, and I very much enjoyed being a part of it. This series is one of my favourites, and this particular book is currently my most loved.

Although this book can be read as a standalone, I would suggest reading the previous entries in the series to get the most out of it.

I recommend this series in general, and G is for Ghost in particular, to those readers who love a low-key paranormal mystery.

Thank you to Dina Marie and BookSirens for the opportunity to read this digital ARC. As always, my opinions are my own, honest and true.

**I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.**

G is for Ghost by Dina Marie is the fifth in the Salem Spirits Cozy Mysteries series. It follows Clara, the soon to be proprietress of a bed and breakfast in Salem, MA. While giving a presentation at a local school, she witnesses one of the teachers falling dead in the auditorium. With the power to see and communicate with the dead, she is on a mission to help the teacher find his killer so he can rest in peace and cross to the other side.

As I noted, this is the fifth book in the series. It is, though, the first I have read. I like to test series’ this way. It is the sign of a good author when a new reader can pick up a book without having read earlier in the series, or even knowing the book was part of a series, and be able to dive right in. I found this to be true with Marie’s book. There is enough context within the text to catch new readers up, and there is little need to know complicated relationships, even though the main one in this book seems to have a rich history.

The writing is crisp and keeps the story moving. It flows along as most cozy mysteries do, with sentences that are not overly long, situations that are out of the norm but are still somehow familiar, and enough bulk to keep characters from feeling two-dimensional. There is a trend towards supernatural cozy mysteries, to which this is a definite addition. The book does not stand head and shoulders above the competition, but that can be said of most cozy mysteries. One of the things that keeps them cozy is the formula that they follow. This is not bad, as it brings forth the cozy, but there are also no genre heroics.

I cannot think of much to say to the detriment of the book. The plot was fun. There is a strong focus on the importance of family, even found family. This is a positive message and one that is always important to hear. I enjoyed reading the book and give it four out of five stars.

First of all, I would like to thank author Dina Marie, BookSirens and eLuna Media for allowing me to read this ARC free for an honest review.

I'm always looking for a cozy mystery series to read and G for Ghost checked that box, with three other bonuses--ghost story (supernatural), a character from the Civil War, and the setting/location of Salem, MA. Although this is the fifth book in the series and I prefer to start with firsts, I was impressed with Dina Marie's ability to weave in prior information so that a reader who jumps into the series doesn't feel lost. That doesn't mean there weren't a few times where I was left wondering what had happened before, but instead has me wanting more by reading this series.

I've given 5 stars, though had considered 4.5 at first. However, while writing this review, felt there were quite a few qualities woven in to this story without being overtly "preachy" or otherwise. This was such a fun read and just what I was looking for in a new cozy mystery series.

I was reminded a little bit of the show Ghost Whisperer in that the main character seems to exude that same charm and sense of caring as Melinda Gordon, such as with helping ghosts find peace so they may pass on (oops, I ended that in a preposition). But be sure, they are different characters in their own right; Melinda is happily married, while Clara is getting a second chance at romance.

Her ghost characters are memorable as well--William is very intriguing and I like that Dina Marie has used his backstory to weave through the novel as a secondary plot and is something not easily resolved. As for the main ghost's story being told, Mr. MacDougal, an 81-year-old English teacher, makes for quite a delightful and memorable character. At times, the author could smoothly tie in local Salem history through Mr. MacDougal without it being information "dump." And having been an English major, there were some amusing moments where Clara, the main character, was put on her toes to watch her grammar; avoiding ending sentences in prepositions (something I had been drilled during my school days).

Other minor themes that were so refreshing, especially in more recent times, included the importance of family along with expanding sense of community and of friendships in this smaller, close-knit town.

The only "downside" (if one wants to consider it a "negative") to this novel was that it ended too soon (was a quick read), but not so much a bad thing either. I would have liked a little more investigating. Despite the resolution coming far sooner than I was ready, the ending was actually surprising upbeat; again, refreshing in books these days.

I highly recommend this series and can't wait to start with Book One. I even signed up on the author's website for her email newsletter and for a Salem Spirits Cozy Mysteries short story for free. Please checkout her website for more details: dinamariebooks.com.

I really enjoyed Book 5 of this series. All of the books in this series have been enjoyable and I hope to read many more.

We find Clara just a few weeks away from opening her very own Bed and Breakfast with William's assistance of course. A friend of hers reaches out and tells her there is some sort of business meeting down at the high school where business owners speak to the high schoolers about what they do and her friend had signed her up to speak. While at the high school, of course, one of the teachers dies. This teacher is 81 years old so nobody thinks it is odd that he just perhaps succumbs to old age but Clara knows differently because she finds his ghost at the high school before leaving. Being 81, Mr. MacDougal is something of a grammar expert and Clara finds herself being corrected just about every time she opens her mouth. Reminds me about being around my mother and how I am always on guard when I am texting my mother… she is always correcting my grammar. But Mr. MacDougal has lived in Salem his whole life and he knows all about the historical buildings in Salem and he and William get along fabulously. Clara is also still working on clearing William's name. Once again, Clara finds her life in danger when she figures out that Mr. MacDougal definitely was murdered and who the murder is and how that murderer intends to silence Clara.

All in all, a good story and a quick read. Can be read as a stand alone but I recommend starting from the beginning and getting to know the characters as you go.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thanks, BookSirens!

We're back with more Clara and William, as she continues her quest to absolve him of a crime he didn't commit (and history put him down as a criminal for), as well as, of course, as she runs into yet another ghostly friend to help into the Afterlife.

This time, she's asked to speak at a career day sort of function at the local high school, and one of the teachers, who reminds me of that ghostly professor from Harry Potter, ends up not just sleeping, but dead. Once he turns into a ghost, it's clear that she's got another murder on her hands.

The book features Clara finally having a first date with Sebastian, still making goo-goo eyes at William, and a return of the real estate agent who was shagging Clara's now-deceased husband behind her back. Also, the case-of-the-book this time, the deceased teacher, is a lovely ghost to have around and I really enjoyed the time she got to spend with him.

The case itself is fairly straightforward, inheritance, gambling, money, the works, but what I liked about it most is the expanding sense of community, of friendships Clara's making in the town around her, and how even the police officer who was so suspicious of her in the beginning has now warmed up to her after having to come to her rescue before she gets turned into a ghost herself!

All in all, another quiet, cozy read for a rainy afternoon.

Clara Kelly, busy with the near opening of her bed and breakfast as well as clearing the name of her Civil War era ghost, reluctantly agrees to speak to students at career day. During the assembly, the elderly teacher Mr. MacDougal appears to pass peacefully in his sleep. Clara knows otherwise as she is able to see his ghost. Convinced foul play is involved, Clara is determined to find the truth and help him pass over. Especially as having a ghost tagging along on her first date in years proves to be a distraction. But when the killer sets their sights on Clara will she be the next ghost haunting Kensington Manor?

The fifth Salem Spirits book offers a new mystery for Clara to unravel as well as furthering her growth from her own tragic past. Clara is clever and resourceful and I admire her dedication to proving William’s innocence despite the overwhelming odds. I also loved seeing her stand up to her former husband’s mistress. Mr. MacDougal was quite charming and I enjoyed his commentary throughout the investigation. His ending was heartbreaking and shows that despite our best intentions, we still make mistakes that cause pain to those around us. Ghost Cat and Boy both play roles in saving the day and are wonderful characters as well. Looking forward to more of this series and hoping William finally gets the honor he deserves.

Clara is a month away from her grand opening of her B&B. Her friend/resident ghost William is helping her with advertising and email communications. Yes, he is from another era but well adjusted to the internet. She has been asked to speak at a senior H.S. Career day where she does not think she has anything to offer the students, after all she is not employed in a professional career. With William's coaching, he shows her she has a lot to offer. Of all in the assembly, the students are high energy, snark and not wanting to be there. Even the teachers look bored, but one teacher is obviously sound asleep. Clara knocks her segment out of the park and the students hang on every word. Afterword, something is wrong. All but one class of students have left. The ones still there are surrounding their sleeping teacher. Mr. MacGougal is in his eighties and some of his students are the grand children of students passed. He, however was no longer sleeping, at least in the Earth bound kind. His ghost rises and only Clara can see him. Now, how is she going to juggle solving a murder, proving William was not a traitor, hold a successful opening and try to engage in a new relationship? Dina Marie has woven a book with non stop action and I can only dream of having even a ;little of Clara's gusto!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It centers around Clara, who is opening up a B&B. Clara can also speak to ghosts and has a knack for helping them find closure so they can move on. Her B&B has a resident ghost with a more complicated past. I really enjoyed Clara, a smart, kind, and thoughtful character. She is surrounded by other great, secondary characters, both living and ghostly. The book was interesting throughout, I read it in a couple days. It kept a good pace and really kept me intrigued. There were a few suspects and the ending didn't quite turn out how I thought it would, which is a good thing. It had an extra aspect to the crime that I wasn't expecting. The ending was sweet and really came together in a great way. It was a little bit of an adrenaline rush with some sadness, sweetness, and happiness. I love the premise of the story with helping ghosts find peace and pass on, but it brings some mixed emotions of happiness and sadness. Clara also has an interesting backstory that I would love to know more about, as well as the backstory of William. I can't wait to see where this series goes from here. Highly recommend! This series keeps on delivering joyful reads!

As someone who has read all of the previous installments I am impressed with Dina's ability to balance making it possible to read the books as stand-alones, while at the same time not making the installments too repetitive for those reading them in order.

This fifth book in the series is my favourite so far, a feat in itself! I loved the ghost of Mr. MacDougal; to me he was portrayed with much more depth and nuance than the ghosts from the previous books. Bantering about grammar and with constant commentary, he was simply a hoot.

In my previous reviews I have commented that I felt something lacking concerning one thing or another. In this installment, Dina has done a wonderful job in balancing all of the aspects and relationships I wished to see, and she has portrayed them expertly. You can feel through the pages the love and familiarity between Clara, William, Ghost Cat and Boy, giving a subtle yet important message that one's family is not necessarily forged by blood.

This is book 5 in the Salem Spirits Cozy Mysteries series. This series follows Clara Kelly, a woman who can see ghosts and helps them solve their murders so they can pass on.

This was such a good mystery! I really enjoyed MacDougal. It was really fun seeing him bond with William.

Speaking of William, I can’t wait to see if Clara finally clears his name!

I’m looking forward to Clara and Sebastian’s relationship growing. But I think I might have detected a little spark between Clara and the reporter Taylor’s brother…Taylor is the worst and it would suck if Clara has to put up with him more. His brother seemed so nice how are they related?!

In the next book I hope we see Clara win the inheritance case!

I love this series so much! The book covers are all gorgeous and I adore the fall vibes. I really want to go to Salem some day!

In the latest installment of the Salem Spirits cozy mysteries Clara's Bed and Breakfast is on the verge of it's launch. In the effort to market her venture, Clara attends a business leaders school assembly, sharing with the students her experience of starting a Bed and Breakfast. Obviously where there's Clara, there is bound to be a suspicious death because she can see the ghost of the elderly teacher who has seemingly passed away peacefully while in the assembly. Then begins the very interesting and somewhat dangerous sleuthing efforts.

I thoroughly enjoyed this part of the Salem Spirits series as well. I somehow dread the moment when Clara will be able to figure out what's keeping William Kensington in the mortal realm, since I feel that would be the end of this wonderful, spectral series. I laughed when Mr. Mac Dougal kept on correcting Clara's English. A light, fast paced read, G is for Ghost was a fun read.

Charming spectral cosy mystery set in Salem.

This is the fifth in the series, but the first I've read. There were some references to previous books, but I feel I missed out on some backstory and character description. This is the only reason I haven't awarded the full five stars.

Our heroine is busy juggling: the logistics of opening her bed and breakfast; her personal relationships; the needs and feelings of her resident Civil War officer factotum and settling into a new community. We are shown her values, priorities and determination through her actions and events she encounters.

Her solving the murder without formal police involvement at the outset is well set-up and credible also showing us using her special power to converse with ghosts. A comforting, pleasing and enjoyable read.

Who Killed Mr. MacDougal ? . . .

Clara Kelly’s life is getting quite busy with opening her Bed and Breakfast in a few weeks. When a friend, Stephanie, signs her up to speak as a business owner at a high school assembly to encourage the students about future endeavors, an elderly teacher, 81-year-old Mr. MacDougal, is discovered dead in his seat. His ghost lets Clara know that he was murdered and needs her help in finding his killer. He has always lived in Salem and he and William Kensington, Clara’s own nineteenth-century resident ghost, have much to chat about. Will Clara and her unusual team discover the identity of the killer before she herself is “silenced”? Will she still be around for her first date with Sebastian? Her adventures are always amazing, not to be missed. So grab your copy and see how her chaotic tasks resolve!

G is for Ghost is a charming entry in the cozy mystery genre, offering a delightful blend of lighthearted intrigue, family bonds, and the warmth of true friendship. While the mystery itself keeps readers turning the pages, what truly shines here is the focus on relationships—how family ties and the comfort of community guide the characters through their challenges.

The story balances suspense with heart, and the author does a wonderful job reminding us that solving life’s puzzles isn’t just about uncovering secrets, but about leaning on the people who stand beside us. The cozy atmosphere, mixed with moments of humor and tenderness, makes it a joy to sink into.

I’m grateful to Book Sirens and the author for providing me with an advance reader’s copy of G is for Ghost. It was a truly enjoyable read, and I look forward to following more in the series.

I Love This Series

In book 5 of this series Clara Kelly meets Mr McDougal, an 80 year old English teacher who has no idea of why he's a ghost, but Clara is determined to help him.

One of the reasons why I live this series is Dina Marie writes of surviving martial abuse. Her engenue, Clara Kelly is recently widowed. He died when he decided to burn down the historic home that his wife loves, and tripped over a ghost cat on the top stair. Clara then inherits the house, moves in, and decides to make it a bread and breakfast. Clara is still dealing with the effects of surviving abuse. I love that Dina Marie writes of Clara's nightmares, and insecurities from her eight year marriage, and of how charming her abuser was. Too many people think that if a man is handsome and charming that he can not possibly be a monster.

First of all I have to be upfront and confess that I am a huge fan of this series. William is my fave. He's come a long way since his first intro, and I'm still enamored with him, and

it gets better with each book, and he's more eye opening and humbling than ever. Poor old teacher lost his life, but still had the grace and integrity to say he forgave the killer, but it was a heartbreaker. Clara and William make quite the oddly wonderful sleuthing pair. I suspected someone else, but enjoyed following along. Still searching for retribution for William!!!! Come on Clara!!!

An engaging, captivating, and engrossing read. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest review.

Thank you to BookSirens for allowing me to read this ARC!

I absolutely love this series. I've read all of the books and am so happy it's still going. Clara is only weeks away from finally opening her bed and breakfast in Kensington House.

But while she is attending an event at the local high school, a teacher passes away and Clara is determined to find out what really happened. Was it simply an accident or was it murder? Clara is also still on her mission to clear William's name.

I really enjoyed how quick of a read this was. Less than 200 pages and I was at the end before I knew it. I'm very excited to continue this series and see what is in store for Clara when she finally gets her B&B opened for business.

Every book in the series just keeps getting better!

The time around, the ghost Clara is dealing with is a high school teacher. Considering the fact he is quite old, she was a bit surprised to see a ghost appear when he passed. Will she be able to figure out who murdered him and why, all while trying to go on her first date with Sebastian and get ready for the opening of her new bed-and-breakfast? I really enjoy this series. I love the way Clara is standing up for herself more and becoming more assertive, while not losing her compassion. The mysteries always keep me guessing and Clara is becoming more and more a part of the community in Salem.

Clara Kelly is speaking at an event for high school seniors when an elderly teacher suddenly dies in the audience that turns out to be a murder. The prime suspect is his daughter, who usually manages his medication. As Clara works to help the teacher’s ghost cross over, she’s also determined to prove that William. the ghost haunting her home was innocent of the crimes he was hung.

This is the first book in the series I’ve read, and I regret not starting the series sooner. Fortunately, the story is easy to follow even without reading the earlier books, and now I’m eager to catch up on the rest of the series.

Tragic accident or malicious murder?

Clara is just weeks away from her B&B opening when she gets roped into talking at a career day at the local high school. What she can’t anticipate is that a murder of a beloved teacher happens and she is once again caught up in a ghostly mystery.
Really loved this one. There’s a lot of fun historical facts and one very opinionated yet kindly teacher to share them. Clara is still on her quest for William but also making time for good things in her present. Great twist on the culprit and the catching of said doer. Really fun lighthearted read with plenty of ghosts to add charm and depth.

I'm loving this series so much! I cannot stress that enough. I absolutely love these characters. When Jasper passed, I'm not going to lie, I was hollering for Clara to take him to William. I knew that would be a good match. I'm glad that happened. Some of the secrets are coming to light and I'm excited for that. I'm ready for William's story to be told. His real story. And finding out about Alice's dad..I'm hoping he will be included in future stories. Something tells me he would be a good ally. I totally recommend this series. It's fun, historical, and heartfelt. A good reminder of friendships and family. Can't wait for the next one!

I love this series and the main character Clara who helps ghosts move on where she can and I look forward to one day when she solves her resident ghost’s reason for not moving on, although it will be disappointing also, as they have such a wonderful friendship. Not only has she overcome an abusive husband and renovated a historic home that has a resident ghost and I really enjoy their relationship and also the ones she develops with other ghosts until she finds out what’s keeping them from moving on. I feel good reading these books.

Once again, another excellently written cozy mystery. Clara Kelly is spunky, and set on helping the ghosts that can't cross over until their murder is solved.
No only is she helping recently deceased, but working on opening her own bed-and-breakfast, and trying to help prove that her resident ghost, William, is innocent of treason.
She has a lot on her plate, and each book brings us closer to William's past. Love this series.

I really enjoy this series! The last book was good with Clara’s business trip to Vegas but there was not enough William in the book for me. This book, G is for Ghost was great. Clara has to help another ghost this time and he gets to meet William. Clara is almost ready to open her B&B and she is still trying to help William. I love how William can interact with objects and how much he helps Clara. I’m looking forward to their adventures in book 6. Clara Kelly is asked to chat to students at Salem high school about her bed and breakfast venture.
While there an elderly teacher passes, but the fact she can see him means this could be an unnatural passing and he has unfinished business.
As usual she can't resist helping a ghost in need so she sets out to try and help Mr. MacDougal all the while preparing for the opening of her B and B and trying to clear William Kensington's name.
Another wonderful installment of the Salem Spirits series.
Always look forward so much to the next in the series, they never disappoint.

This was an interesting book. I love history, and reading more about the history of Salem is awesome. The best, of course, are the characters. A gentleman from the 1800s, an old-time teacher, animals, one a ghost, and a modern-day young woman, all living in an old house renovated and turned into a bed and breakfast. It's entertaining with a murder to solve and getting to know the various suspects. A page-turner worth reading.

Fast paced mystery! Part of a series. It does help to read in order for background information. Clara can see and communicate with ghosts. William Kensington is the resident ghost of Kensington House. Jasper MacDougall is a high school teacher, now ghost. Clara is doing research to clear Williams name from the Civil War. Now she is trying to solve the cause of Jaspers death. Salem has a history of ghosts and witches. If you like secret rooms, ghosts, and cozy mysteries, you will enjoy G is For Ghost.

Another good story for this series. I have really enjoyed this series, the MC has really come into her own and is leading the way. I love the way Salem is described, all the different shops and the people who live there. It makes me want to move there, even more than I had wanted to before this series. I'm hoping for a few more books in this series, as this storyline could go for quite a while and still be fresh and unique in each book.

I love this series! I just can’t get enough of Clara and William. Their friendship is so heartwarming.

This time Clara has to help a teacher who passed at a seminar she was a speaker. William helps out with him and gives the new spirit tips on how to do different ghostly things.

It was shocking and sad to find out who the murderer was. But William really saved the day in the end.

We also had lots of Boy cuteness!
