A trained hunter finds himself on an interplanetary run in Jimm Grogan's thrilling debut novel, "Negative Zero."
Tomek lives a seemingly quiet life as a spacecraft engineer for the interstellar Azten Empire of Federated Worlds.
No one knows, however, that during Tomek's frequent "vacations," he volunteers for his planet's police force, tracking down convicted criminals and delivering them to justice. Known for taking on cases that no other volunteer will touch, Tomek uses the code name "Negative Zero" in order to protect himself and those he loves.
Tomek takes on the investigation of a lifetime when he tracks down those responsible for two major crimes: one in which thousands of farmers die of a suspected plague, and another in which the mass murderer uses a mysterious drug to force victims to hand over their wealth before dying.
As Tomek unravels the mystery behind those responsible, he is confident that they will be brought to justice.
But the sinister Trident group has other plans in mind when they eventually find out who Negative Zero really is. As they close in on his location, using corrupt imperial guards as their henchman, Tomek must fight for his life if he is to survive.
Jimm Grogan earned an associate's degree in electronics and a bachelor's degree in computer science before launching a career as an engineer for Hewlett Packard, Inc. and PMC-Sierra, Inc.
Grogan currently lives with his spouse in Roseville, California.
Disclaimer - I won this book via a First Reads giveaway.
I enjoyed this book. It was a very fast (too fast, really) read. While it was somewhat typical of a futuristic sci-fi vigilante, it had a good twist. I liked the secret identity aspect, and NZ was was at least a multi-dimensional character - something that does not always come through in this type of book.
I liked the diverse alien races, and the appendices describing them were a nice addition. Although I would have liked more substance in their description, and perhaps some more of those aspects coming through in the book itself.
I also felt that the book was in too much of a hurry to get from one action to the next. Providing more details, especially into the "workings" of some of the technologies would have been helpful. Plus some more details of hte action itself would have been good.
For a first novel(la), this is a great effort by Mr. Grogan. Rather than moving onto another book, I wonder whether effort would be better spent on fleshing this book out into perhaps twice its current length.
So I was really surprised by this book. Most of what I read are all the same type of books Zombies or Gothic Horror, mainly because I find reading so difficult I really have to get interested in the book right away to be able to finish it. This book is not something I would normally purchase but it was offered as a free giveaway and I happened to be one of the winners. I am so glad I was because I dd actually enjoy it this book. Following Tomek as he attempts bring justice against those responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands was quite the adventure and I cannot wait to continue in what I hope will become a series of novels. To point out while I did receive this free it has not altered my opinion of this book.
Many years in the future, humans live in a galactic universe so vast that it actually encourages vigilantism to control crime.
Negative Zero is a near legendary vigilante investigating a plague, as well as an evil drug dealer.
There's some pretty good action sequences, and some interesting alien races, although there isn't a lot of nuts and bolts explaining how things work, or how the alien races think differently than humans.
Still not a bad debut, and this is the first book in a series. I enjoyed it. I especially liked the appendix with pictures of the different alien races.
