She Journeys: A Memoir of Heartbreak and Homecoming

Rate this book
A debut memoir for fans of Love Warrior—a candid account of the emotional and psychological pain of infidelity and divorce; and the journey of a lifetime that one woman took to heal.

Few things can shatter our hearts like expectations. Sarah expected to live happily ever after. She expected her husband to honor his vows. She expected his military helicopter to land safely. But when the unimaginable occurred and her world unraveled so magnificently, the undoing of her expectations left her on her knees, fighting for her life. When everything we “expect” crumbles like ash after a fire, how do we reconcile what was lost?

One courageous step at a time.

Sarah packed her car, then set out to hike and camp across the country. But pain, codependence, and trauma challenged her as she moved forward. From a sailboat to a yoga studio, a therapist’s couch to a shaman’s ceremony, from selling everything and moving into a van—on the ashes of her former expectations, Sarah rebuilt, from the inside out.

She Journeys is a testament to the transformative power of healing. From darkness to light, from a marriage ended to a life reclaimed, we are reminded that it never matters how we begin. Only that we do. From wounds to wisdom, She is every woman who must find her way from heartbreak to homecoming.

Beautifully written, and I found myself reflecting on my own life throughout. Reflecting on what, who, and why we choose what we choose. This book was an inside look of a friend from the perspective of honesty of what happened and the authors own personal role she played. I loved bringing in the healing from generational trauma and how our own upbringing has sculpted us. Forming what we choose and how we react. I’m walking through my own acceptance on childhood trauma, family trauma, and found myself in the book of adult children of emotionally immature parents like Sarah. I’ve never looked at the connection on who we choose and how that stems from the roles we play. I appreciate the openness with her own story with the opportunity to look deeper at our own. And the gentle reminder that healing is not linear.

A moving memoir about learning to let go of the past and the journey it takes to acquire a powerful sense of self-love.

"She Journeys" reminded me of Cheryl Strayed's famous memoir "Wild" in many ways, so I hope that Sarah's book finds it ways to many of Strayed's fans. Sarah has lived through a tough childhood, an abusive marriage, and more trauma than I could ever imagine. Yet somehow, she has managed to find peace and joy in all apects of life. It obviously wasn't a quick or easy journey, but I find it so inspiring to hear people share their rough experiences and showcase how their life has managed to get better.

There are many different parts of this book that will resonate differently with certain readers. There are parts where Sarah is stuck in a dangerous relationship, parts where she is exploring the wilderness on her own, segments in which she is learning to live life on her own, and a great portion of the end of the book that features Sarah learning to love herself for who she is, not for what others view her as. There are so many valuable lessons packed into this book, and I feel that most readers will be able to relate to something penned in its pages.

One part of this book that really resonated with me is Sarah's exploration towards self-love. Much of the time, I am very proud of all of my accomplishments and how far I've come thus far in life. However, in today's society it's hard to feel like I'm not constantly falling behind or that I'm not good enough to meet other's expectations of me. Sarah talks about the most important kind of love is the love that you show to yourself. Everyone else's opinions are second and frankly, shouldn't hold as much weight as your own views. If you constantly think that you aren't enough, then you will truly begin to believe this outlook, and it will make your life miserable. Turning to others to find validation can be addicting, but it can also be dangerous. This book is a great reminder that seeking love from others is a vital part of being human, but that love should also be backed up by the love one feels for themself.

I think it is so cool that Sarah and her husband Andrew travel the country living out of their van, Rudy. To let go of the unimportant parts of life and pave a path to their own freedom is so amazing; I truly applaud them for being brave enough to take control of their own destinies like that. Following their book tour for "She Journeys" and Andrew's book "Now Is the Time: A Van Life Roadtrip" on social media has been really fun, and I encourage others to check out their travels!

Overall, I'm grateful that Sarah's book "She Journeys" found its way into my hands. It is a moving memoir that acts as a great reminder to what is most important in life. Sarah's story is uplifting and inspiring; I hope that her story reaches the ears of those that truly need it most. The trauma that Sarah has lived through is immense, but the strength she possesses to recover and seize the life that she truly wants for herself fills me with awe. I would definitely recommend this one to readers who love memoirs about resilient women overcoming life's obstacles. Also, if you are a fan of Cheryl Strayed's "Wild," I feel like you'd probably enjoy this book, too.

Note: I know the author's husband.

And I'm a 62 year old male who averages fifty primarily non-fiction books read per year over the past few decades. I say that to say this: this is one of the most engaging, meaningful books I've connected with in years.

Sarah's honesty and writing captured my attention and heart immediately. I had no intention of reading over half the book in one sitting, but I did. Stunned by the connection and recall of my earlier days in uniform and the pains of the grinding, ruinous, endemic relationship patterns in so many military, human lives. It's not trashy, but it's brutally honest.

Honesty is the tip of the spear that drives this book forward. As she works her way out of the morass, Sarah puts all of herself in plain sight. I never heard her say, "I'm right," rather, "This is what I did." This book is not an apology, Socratic or otherwise.

As the book closed, I was full of pride for her on so many levels. There is an emotional toll when living this life. Scars are made. Yet hope and gratitude are gained when people share their travels with us. I am grateful that Sarah did the work and shared it with me as She Journeys.

I found Sarah’s healing journey incredibly inspiring. Her words paint such vivid pictures that I honestly felt like I was walking every step of the path with her. This book is so deeply relatable and meaningful—whether you’re healing from something big, something small, or something you can’t quite name. I truly believe so many people will find comfort, clarity, and hope through her story.

I carried this book with me everywhere. I actually welcomed long lines at the grocery store and delays at the doctor’s office just so I had an excuse to keep reading. That’s how beautifully written it is. Her honesty, her vulnerability, and the gentle strength in her storytelling all come together in a way that stays with you long after you close the pages.

Sarah’s journey is a reminder that healing doesn’t happen all at once. It truly is a journey. Her travels, her moments of breaking and mending, her willingness to start over again and again—it made me reflect on my own path.

This book felt like sitting with a friend who’s been through the fire and is willing to tell the truth about what it really takes to rise again. I can’t recommend it enough.

She Journeys is a soulful read.
I related on many different levels with the author through the first part of the book. I reflected back on how my experiences differed but were parallel with May’s.
May bent herself to fit into a relationship that was volatile and fractious from the beginning.
I had no respect for her first husband and actually yelled at him when I read the book. I also shook my head as May kept communicating with him long after she should have.
Finding herself took many nuanced paths and approaches until May found what worked for her.
What readers gain from this book is leaning love yourself and know your worth is one of the greatest revelations.
Thanks She Writes Press and the author for the advance copy.

After losing everything she thought her life would be, her marriage, her husband, her sense of home Sarah May packed up her car and set off across the country. Hiking, healing, crying, letting go one mile and one moment at a time.

From therapy to shamans, sailboats to van life, She Journeys is raw, real, and full of the kind of soul-searching that hurts in the best way. But it’s not just about heartbreak, it's about coming home to yourself!

If you've ever had to rebuild after life knocked you down, this one will feel like a hug from someone who gets it!

⚡️Thank you Books Forward PR, She Writes Press and Sarah May for sharing this book with me!

She Journeys takes us through one woman's courage to reshape her life after knowing her marriage needs to end. On the day she plans to talk with her husband about this, he is in a horrific accident. Sarah stays by his side, taking care of him. Within this relationship, she loses herself.
When Sarah moves from this relationship, she searches for answers and understanding within herself. She takes a courageous journey deep inside, and like a phoenix, rises again. Her adventures breathe life into her soul. Sarah looks back in order to heal and move forward.
A great read with references of books and sources she used to help her get to where Sarah is today.

It doesn’t feel fair to ‘rate’ this book since it is so personal. I give the author 5 stars for her vulnerability and storytelling. As a fellow millennial woman who also went on a similar quest, I greatly commend the author for putting her experience down on paper and meeting her goal of writing the book. My mom gave it to me for Christmas since she met the author at the signing and our moms were friends! My mom thought we have a lot in common and it’s true! A quick and engrossing read. Some powerful words I lingered on: ‘Redemption is an inside job.’

What a great book! I found this at my local bookstore because the author was there promoting it. To meet her in person & read the story on the page made it so much more powerful. I read the book in 2 days because it was so good - couldn't put it down. Harrowing tale, incredibly vulnerable, very well-written. And I love the overarching message - that we must pursue what we know is best for ourselves and we can overcome & achieve our dreams.

She Journeys is a well written and compelling memoir on female empowerment and growth. Sarah’s greatest strength is giving breadth and width to the people in her book. Flaws are developed without judgment and compassion is given to all—even those who harmed her most. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys female memoirs that contain both the downward spiral of trauma and the upward rebound of redemption.

AMAZING read!! She Journeys is so authentically vulnerable and such an enticing story. Sarah May bares it all and in doing so, also teaches that there is a path to healing, even from some of the most unimaginable things someone can experience. Would recommend this book to anyone because firstly, its incredibly well written and engaging, and secondly because there's a lesson for everyone <3

I’ve enjoyed this journey through Sarah’s life so much! She shares the highs and lows and everything in between, and I am in awe. How much wisdom and inspiration can one person have at such a young age? Sarah proves that age means nothing in the evolution of the soul. I highly recommend you read this book.

This memoir is so many things: well-written, inspiring, raw and brutally honest. Though it’s not your typical prescriptive self-help book, Sarah left me feeling motivated and reflective on my own life and relationships. Her recovery from codepency, healing journey from divorce and abuse, her travels and journey into van life, all made for a dynamic and purposeful read.

This book is so well written that even though the subject matter was painful to read, I couldn’t put it down. I laughed, I cried and I got angry. I sincerely hope that Sarah May writes more books. I would read them all! Enjoy
