Target audience : Fourth through eighth grade.
Summary: A sort of hybrid book and magazine, each issue of Zoobooks deals with a particular category or subset of animal (Birds of Prey, Endangered animals, whales, baby animals.) The Birds of Prey volume breaks down this category of birds by range and species, explains how they capture prey, illustrates beaks, claws and nesting patterns and so forth. Beautiful illustrations give the reader an impression not unlike viewing a diorama at a natural history museum. Embedded throughout the text is a subtext emphasizing the interconnectedness of our environment and the need for conservation.
Strengths/weaknesses: Excellent general introduction to the topic. Lacks serious depth, more of an overview.
Illustrations: Very nicely illustrated with photographs, charts and diagrams.
