AKA Elaine Rome

Elaine Barbieri wrote over thirty historical novels that have been published worldwide. She was certain young adult readers would enjoy the excitement of historical romance if given a chance, and she welcomed the opportunity to write Miranda and the Warrior for this new audience. Elaine lived in northern New Jersey with her husband and family, and with Harrison, a demanding male who she is sure would be the ultimate hero -- if he weren't a cat.

This review is of “Tattered Silk” by Elaine Barbieri.

The Story: “Tattered Silk” begins in 1901 in Paterson, New Jersey. It is here where the heroine of the book, Sophia Marone, 17, lives. Sophia lives with her father, Anthony, her mother Maria, and her younger sisters Rosalie and Anna. All three Marone girls work at the Kingston Silk Mill. Also working there are two men who will play an important part in Sophia’s life: Joey Moretti, who, like Sophia, works with the silk fabric, and Lyle Kingston, the unacknowledged bastard son of the mill’s owner, Matthew Kingston. (Sophia is also pursued by a third man, Aaron Weiss, whose family owns another silk mill and who has a rivalry with Lyle.)

Sophia has a dream: to not make silk but to use it as a fashion designer. Aaron helps her in this goal by introducing her to a modiste, Madame Celeste Tourneau, who hires Sophia as a human mannequin. Unbeknownst to Sophia, Aaron and Celeste have a secret plan going on behind her back.
Sophia becomes Aaron’s mistress. This helps Sophia on one level, as Celeste and Aaron help her with her dream of being a fashion designer. However, Sophia pays a heavy price for the affair when Anthony and Maria disown Sophia, in part because of Sophia’s affair with Aaron, and also because of a revealed family secret.

Choices, and a tragedy compel Sophia to make choices about her personal and professional lives. Who does she choose? For the answer to that question, you’ll have to read the book.

Upside: As always, Ms. Barbieri writes her books in a way that as a reader, I felt her characters emotions, both positive and negative.

Downside: Other than Anthony, Rosalie and Anna Marone, I didn’t find the other characters to be particularly likable. There were also storylines that were not fleshed out enough.

Sex: Ms. Barbieri’s sex scenes are written so that readers know that two characters are engaging in sexual conduct, but are far from descriptive.

Violence: Maria hits Sophia twice during times when they argue with each other. The book ends with a fire which destroys most of Paterson, New Jersey.

Bottom Line: Emotionally, “Tattered Silk” is a five-star book. But the lack of likable characters and unfinished storylines brings the book down a peg for me. It’s still one of Ms. Barbieri’s better books, although that is damning with faint praise.

This is one of those really well written, emotional, and unpredictable romance novel with a cast of engaging but dark characters. I've only just recently started reading this author's backorder list and thus far, what I love most about her books is that her main character's personalities are so utterly complex and muti-layered. They feel so real to me, I suppose that is the appeal of this author's work.

I did not finish this book, not because it was a bad book, far from it (4 stars)! But because it was just TOO good, too human and too angsty for me to read right now. The heroine, who is superficially perfect and who knows it too, is torn between 2 obsessed men who equally draws and attracts her. They're both equally likable and unlikeable at the same time. I was getting so anxious, I actually cheated and read the back to see who she will ultimately end up with LOL... I haven't done something like this in 15 years of reading a romance novel, this book is unpredictable!!

If you want a emotional and realistic romance with a heroine who feels desire for BOTH men, give this one a try.

Okay, so I picked up the book because we had the same last name but I was pleasantly surprised.

It was a good book and I would read it again but can't find even a used copy anywhere.
