I'm going to be honest: I did not finish this book. However, the reason that I didn't finish this book is that I'm a Biology/Physics student and I was worried that I would accidentally internalize some of the information and write it on an exam and then FAIL because this book is OLD AS HELL and the science in it is paleolithic.
The beauty industry moves very quickly. If you want a book on cosmetic science, PLEASE pick something up from this decade. I'm aware science books tend to be extremely expensive and this is a cheaper option, but even at it's cheaper price point, this is almost worthless in terms of scientific information. Even if you were DETERMINED to wring this book for all it's worth, you would probably need to supplement with hours of research just fact checking.
Not to mention, a lot of the makeup information itself is outdated. This is actually kind of nice. It's one of the reasons why it gets two stars. The authors have legitimate expertise in makeup (in the 80s) so the information provided is interesting (in an archival sort of way). For instance, they bring up cosmetic products that someone my age has never even heard of. "Cake foundation," I read that and I was like, 'Wow, humanity has come so far in so little time.'
This book has good ratings on Amazon, which tells me that people actually are reading this and trusting it. I obviously have some scientific background, and I was able to derive some cool info from the book. However, I'd be concerned that someone who does not wouldn't be able to filter bad information from the cool stuff, and just walk away misinformed.
The only person who should look to this book as a source of information is someone who is both an expert in modern cosmetics and modern cosmetic science, and the only reason that they should do that is because they're interested in history.
