Once again I can say that this is not the style for me. I agree with her philosophically about how everything works, but I honestly can't stand the randomness of the truly scrappy quilts she makes. So, we have incompatible design vision (mostly) but compatible fabric tastes. Plus, great info about crafting, switching things around to keep ideas fresh, and the importance of color values. And probably everyone who quilts got there because they love the pretty, pretty fabrics. We're I to make one of these quilts she would probably be bored to tears, so I guess we're square in our dissimilarities. Also, I'm kind of fascinated that she does so much of the work by hand, although I can totally understand the appeal of having something to do with one's hands.
Some folks will love this book from the very talented, colorful world of Jen Kingwell. I would venture to guess that most people will rate this at 4-5 stars. If I could have I would have made it 3.5....
For me, the book was a bit of a let down. I found only one design that I might consider making (the one on the cover), but since I generally prefer a slightly more restrained, although still colorful approach to quilt design, my reaction does not really surprise me. I do think that Jen Kingwell makes the point, that I totally agree with, that all colors can, indeed, play well together.
I think that Ms. Kingwell is gifted, creative leader in the quilt world and she greatly enhanced the world of scrap quilts and exuberantly displays of glorious color!
An exciting and inspiring assortment of patterns and ideas for quilts. Jen is well known for her flamboyant quilting style, mixing colours, designs, and patterns to create unique blends that incorporate into wonderful finished pieces. The patterns are complex but can be accomplished by following the instructions carefully. Hand and machine stitch are included. Definitely a book worth owning, but beware, the temptation to begin 5 more quilts will be strong.
Jen Kingwell's name came up in a quilting FB group I follow recently, particularly around handstitching and the type of design seen on the cover quilt, "Daisy Do." She is a maker of scrappy and energetic quilts, using hand and/or machine stitching. I wish I had been able to read her appendix A "Before you begin" when I started quilting over forty years ago--lots of good practices and wisdom there.
This book has quilt patterns for both machine and hand-quilters. The patterns are presented as very scrappy, but there's a lot of flexibility regarding color choices. The book also includes sheets with patterns at the end of the book.
There are both quilts and pillows (which can obviously be made into quilts).
Here's the patterns I really like: Glitter (p. 7) For the Boys (p. 29) Bonnie Lass (p. 49) Home Run (p. 83)
Some quilts (color and fabric choices) remind me of Kathy Doughty quilts. Love: Glitter~spire shape on each end of block Spinning Around~3 strips of long row of 3 different pinwheels Daisy Do~repeat daisy block using variety of fabrics
