A nice little book, where the author provides a little history, followed by the description of 62 simple meditation exercises. He addresses mundane activities like showering or cooking, that can suddenly have a calming effect once we approach them more mindfully.
The line between meditation and mindfulness is a fuzzy one, however, and opinions and definitions vary. In simple terms, one could say that meditation is setting aside time to focus on something good for yourself — like exercise or prayer or breathing — whereas mindfulness is being more aware, much more aware, of everything going on around you and in you. The two combine in mindfulness meditation, in which one meditates and also focuses that meditation on the thoughts, feelings, and sensations of the moment. Bentley emphasizes the potential meditative moments within the mundane and encourages us to notice and appreciate all of the sensations we feel while performing simple tasks. We can try to ignore the various distracting thoughts and just be “in the moment.
The author is not austere towards the reader. He demystifies meditation, as it is not some mythical, magical solution that only the enlighten can achieve, but helps the reader see how there is value in whatever degree of meditation or mindfulness one can muster. All in all, it was quite helpful.
This was actually my first time reading up on meditation. I bought it because it was perfect for me - someone new to meditation, eager to learn tactics for anxiety / panic attacks. I have learned so much from it. I am thankful to have come across this book.
I thought this book was pretty good. Had easy but useful information. Was simple yet very informative in explaining what meditation is, how it can benefit you, & also many examples on how to practice it in your life. Easy step by step examples that are extremely easy to fit into your busy lifestyle because they also consist of things you already do in your daily life. This book is helpful & quick for the beginner to intermediate.
The first half of the book talks about the history of mediation. The second half deals with excises to do. Some are mediations to do with a simple yoga pose. Some are more mindful excise, drinking tea and noticing every thing about the tea experience. I really liked the book.
I brought this book after practicing meditation for over 2 months - I believed this book would allow me to gain a more insightful view to everyday life and further my knowledge and understand of mindfulness.
The book has 3 parts: Meditation basics, 62 Meditation exercises and Finding mindfulness. I liked the way the book is structured as the exercises are not at the end, this allows you to go back to them and continue reading further on in the book if you would like to. Another thing I love about the book is the fact it includes Sanskrit terms and their meanings, it states words that may crop up in meditation classes or mindfulness. I found this helpful and smart. Meditation goals is a huge part of why I started meditating; the book has a small table of things you may seek as a meditator which you can circle and underline depending on what you would like to gain. The three tables are titled, 'Health seeker', 'Creative thinker' and 'Performance enhancer' with adjoining listed individual goals you may want to gain from meditation, this was important to me as I like to have something to look forward gain when meditating.
This book has become a somewhat refuge for me - much like mindfulness. The strides I have made reading this book in terms of moving forward is huge; it awoke potential and allowed me to go away from the pages knowing I hold the keys to my own happiness and performance. Defiantly worth the read whether you're a beginner to meditation and mindfulness or whether you want to further your knowledge and gain insight into a less stress-free life.
