But only one of them will win his millions: whoever finds out the truth about what happened to Maggie’s younger sister Cassandra, who vanished over eight years ago.

As her grandfather’s strange challenge pits Maggie against those nearest to her, she’s reluctant to drag up painful memories of her sister and distracted by a lingering attraction to Andrew. But as she delves deeper into her sister’s mysterious vanishing, she begins to discover that each of the contestants has dangerous secrets to hide—and with ten million dollars on the line, no one, not even those she loves most, can be trusted...

The Inheritance by Olivia Mayfield was first published as a 6 part serial. It has just been released as a full novel, with all the parts together as one book. I am not a big serial fan, so I was very happy to have been able to read it as one book. I must say, this was one helluva book written so well by Mayfield, who is totally new to me. I will gladly read any new book by Mayfield.

The Inheritance begins with our heroine Maggie Willings returning home after a long absence for her grandfather’s funeral. She left home long ago after the disappearance of her younger sister, who to this day has never been found. To Maggie’s shock, as she listens to her grandfathers will being read, his fortune is now up for grabs to the person who discovers what really happened to her sister Cassandra. Besides Maggie, 3 other people are to take part in this competition of finding the truth, and winning the 10 million dollar prize; Robert, is Maggie’s older other; Bethany, her ex best friend; and Andrew, the young man who broke her heart before she left town.

This story got your attention immediately, and never let go. It was wonderful mystery that kept you guessing every step of the way. I loved Maggie, who was the main character, as we watched through her POV. Everyone and more, were suspects, with so many twists and surprises. Throughout the book, the suspense intensified, as we had to know….What happened to Cassandra? Is she dead or alive?

Maggie doesn’t know who to trust, as her brother refuses to work with her, and she hates Bethany. Only Andrew wanted to work with her to solve the mystery, and he claimed that he wasn’t interested in the money. Poor Maggie, she still finds herself with feelings for Andrew, but can she trust him?
Maggie is determined to do everything she can to find out what happened that night when Cassandra disappeared, and enlists not only Andrew, but a former friend, who is now a cop. Along the way, as she tries to get information from the people who saw Cassandra last, the danger escalates and the excitement builds. Memories are sometimes best left alone, but as we get deeper and deeper, the plot thickens, with many of those twists coming quickly, as we race to the climax.

While we are caught up in the mystery and suspense, Maggie and Andrew rekindle their romance and it is very nicely done. Their chemistry was steaming hot, as was the sex scenes. The Inheritance was a fantastic, exciting and intriguing storyline. I am so glad I read this book in full, as I am not sure I could have handled waiting for the next book in a serial format. If you like a well done mystery, excitement, suspense, and a very nice romance, look no further than The Inheritance, which was so very well written by Olivia Mayfield.

I don't recommend reading THE INHERITANCE by Olivia Mayfield as a serial because it's not episodic enough. No gripping mini-cliffhangers at the end of each part that will compel you to grab the next one and keep on reading. The only way to stay motivated to read this novel is if you either have all 6 parts or you get the omnibus.

To be fair, THE INHERITANCE isn't good but it's not bad either. It's lukewarm at best and as I am not a fan of lukewarm reads, this tanked for me. This promised to be a sexy and suspenseful read and it is on paper but the execution is lacking. First off, I find the premise curious, we have a rich grandaddy setting up this investigation contest between his grandkids, a friend, and his young lover, to solve the mystery of his other granddaughter, Cassandra's, disappearance that happened many years back. It's odd because it doesn't seem logical but for the sake of Drama, I want to see how this would unfold.

As the story moved forward, it was quite easy to figure out who the perpetrator is so the excitement of solving the mystery is already gone before I even reached 50%. So I then focused on the intrigue between the MC, Maggie, and her ex-BFF, Bethany, who became her grandfather's lover. That didn't pan out either because there wasn't a lot of confrontations between Maggie and Bethany and in the end, these two made up thanks to Bethany's sob story. With that tanking, I was banking on the romance instead. It said sexy right so PLEASE! LET THE ROMANCE BE FANTASTIC! Le sigh... it wasn't that good either because it felt forced and it's like OMayfair added sex for the sake of sex. I found myself skipping this part after the first dry hook up. I did like the second chance in love that went on between Maggie and Andrew but it was too perfectly placed and saccharine sweet for it to be convincing. There's too much that happened between them that can't be resolved over a few overnights, heart to heart talks, and Chinese takeout!

Then there's the resolution, half of it is good while the other half isn't. As I've already figured out who the culprit is, and trust me, I suck at murder mysteries so the fact that I solved it early on is very telling. Anyway, I wasn't surprised when the players in Cassandra's disappearance were revealed. What I found heartbreaking was the what, why, and how of it. It's cold, careless, and sad, Cassandra was cast off like trash and in that moment I felt Maggie's grief. After all that wrapped up, the result of who won THE INHERITANCE was revealed. Meh! It's too neat, tight, and nice that I didn't buy it because the conclusion doesn't mesh well with the premise of the story: you have a murder, intrigue, greed, deception and you end your story with mush?

Sigh.

My review cross-posted from Wit and Sin: http://witandsin.blogspot.com/2014/07...

Everyone has a secret to be uncovered in The Inheritance . Olivia Mayfield’s debut novel is a well-crafted mystery that will have you reading late into the night.

Maggie is the heart and soul of The Inheritance . She’s a smart, focused woman who’s done her best to put her life back together after the disappearance of her younger sister nearly tore apart her family. Her grandfather’s will drags Maggie right back into the chaos as she’s forced to confront broken friendships, shattered family members, and an old love who still has the power to make her emotions go haywire. Maggie putting the pieces of her old life back together is every bit as important to the story as her unraveling the mystery of what happened to Cassandra. Ms. Mayfield does a fantastic job of weaving Maggie’s developing relationships (both romantic and platonic) in with the overarching mystery of the story. I loved watching Maggie peel back the layers of everyone’s character even as she started to gather evidence of what truly happened to her sister. And speaking of Cassandra’s disappearance, Ms. Mayfield doesn’t make the quest for answers easy on Maggie. Twists and turns await readers, some of which will be met with glee, others with a heavy heart. It’s difficult to talk about a story like this without ruining the mystery, so I’ll leave it at that. A dash of romance in the form of an old flame ups the stakes for Maggie and rounds out the story beautifully.

The Inheritance is interesting, energetic, and wholly entertaining. This story will hook you from the very first page and not let you go until, like Maggie, you have all the answers. I thoroughly enjoyed The Inheritance and I look forward to reading more of Ms. Mayfield’s work!

Note: The Inheritance was previously published as a six part serial.
