Galactic Conflict

Rate this book
Fleet Admiral Streth has left Rear Admiral Jeremy Strong the difficult task of holding the system of Careth until he can return with a relief fleet.

Jeremy is facing impossible odds as the Hocklyns and AIs gather a massive force to crush his fleet and the defenses he has put in place around the bear’s home planet. Cut off from the Federation, Jeremy and his people have no idea whether the Federation still exists or if the Hocklyns and the AIs have destroyed it.

In the Federation, Admiral Streth is being forced to play a game of politics to get a relief fleet approved. His biggest fear is that he won't arrive back at Careth in time to save Admiral Strong. He knows that time is running out and he might be forced to take some desperate measures.

A good continuation of the series.

It was a good read. If you have been reading the series to this point, I recommend you buy this book. I skimmed certain parts where it involved interpersonal relations.

This book has some serious fleet action in it. It is really my type of book. I loved it. Actually, that has been true for all of the books in this series. This book takes off pretty much from where the previous one ended and, as you can see from the book blurb the Hocklyns and the AI’s are about to strike back and re-conquer Careth, or at least that is what they plan to do.

Almost the entirety of the book is about the defence of Careth. However, that is not really as “limited” as it sounds since the ramifications of this major battle are far-reaching indeed and the shape and goals of the conflict will change rather substantially due to the outcome. As in the previous book we are given a glimpse of the enemy side as well and the relationships between the humans and the Altons also develop a bit. The Altons make a rather ghastly discovery which makes the human struggle all the more important. I have to say that the nature of this discovery was not exactly a surprise though since it has been rather obvious to me what the AI’s were up to since some time. The Hocklyns also have some surprises in store for the human defenders although here as well it was fairly unsurprising what one of the Hocklyn leaders have been up to.

I only have two minor gripes with the book (small spoiler ahead). The ease by which the AI’s magically planted a virus in Ariel felt a bit to far-fetched to me. Actually, maybe three gripes because I cannot understand why they never attempt to make more AI’s given how effective they are combatting the enemy. I also have a problem with the timeframe. I have to admit that I have not gone back and really made a proper calculation but I just feel that, when adding up all the times mentioned for repairs, preparations not to mention the “Six Months Later” chapter at the end, then the time to completion that was mentioned of the nasty AI’s “little project” at the core of the galaxy have already expired.

This a minor gripes though. As I wrote above, I really loved this book. The writing is quite good. The characters are good. The space combat is really good and plentiful. The book advances the story quite a lot and, as far as I understand it, we are arriving at the conclusion of the story arc with the next book in the series. I am eagerly looking forward to this. Well not that the book series ends of course but the rest of the story.

Series is getting repetitive.

This series seems to be getting repetative, and many the characters and scenes are getting flat. I'm seeing the same tropes in this books as earlier ones. To try to up the suspense, we are getting more powerful, but equal weapons that do not reasonate. And the phrases reappear. For/to whatever honor.

As for the AI, they could probably have finished their endgame best by starting trade in book one. No one would have looked anywhere else.

A Hair-Raising Ending in this book

At the beginning of the book over 3 weeks have passedwe find that Admiral Streth has interrupted a meeting of the president and 28 Federation Senate members to threaten taking what's left of First and Second Fleet and return to Rear Admiral Strong at Careth and defend the system without the promised relief fleet.

Admiral Jeremy Strong and the rest of the Special Five, are trapped at Careth by the Hocklyn Fleets and 10 AI ships, and have no idea whether Admiral Streth won or lost and they are the last of the Federation Fleet.

Many action-packed battles will be fought for the Carethian system and many heroes made and lost. By the end of this book after the conclusion of a huge battle leaves you wondering ... for the galaxy to ever see peace, will the Federation have to commit the same crime of genocide the Hocklyn's were committing?

Amazing war chapters!

This book series has been leading up to this war of wars. I wasn’t disappointed how this ended, even though I somehow knew what could happen. Spoiler alert- the butler did it...

I am happy the friends I have come to love are staying true to their character. It is exciting to see how they handle each adventure. I am so ready to read the last installment.

I love this series! I know there are a few people who hate it for some reason, but this book has a 4.2 rating on Goodreads and I think it does for a reason -- cause it's good! Lots of action and suspense. The author tells good tales. I'm really enjoying this.

Page turning action

I loved the action and suspense of the battle scenes. The balance between loses of enemy and friendlies in each conflict made it seem real life. I was on the edge of my seat wondering about the outcome of each struggle.

I put off reading this book because I had read all the other books in the series one after the other! I just couldn’t stop reading them. This story line is really good and the characters are great. At one time it appeared that these books might be just about a group of young kids growing up during a galactic war but it’s far more than that. Yes, Jeremy Strong and Katie Johnson are part of the original story where their fathers first landed on the moon and found the crashed Avenger space ship. From that point on, Earth really got into the space age. Now Jeremy and the “Special Five”, as he and his four other friends are being called, are now in the middle of fighting off the Hocklyn invasion. They have found a new race of aliens that were former slaves to the Hocklyn’s but with Jeremy’s help, they were freed and now want to join the war against the Hocklyns. Admiral Jeremy, his friends and his ship, the Avenger, are assigned a fleet to protect the Carethian planet.

With additional defensive weapons and missiles sent from the Federation, Jeremy and the Carethians have built formidable defense grid around the planet. But, will it be enough? The Hocklyns and their masters, the AIs, are building up a huge fleet intent on taking back the slave world and destroying any and all human presence. Jeremy needs Admiral Streth to fulfill his promise to return and assist in the defense of Careth but Jeremy hasn’t heard a single word from New Tellus where the latest major battle was to take place. For all he knows, the humans have been wiped out and he’s not going to see any reinforcements, ever!

Great reading, I mean really great reading. I have lost a lot of sleep reading this entire series. Last night I finished this book and it was 2 am so you have been warned. Either start reading early in the day and have the determination to quit at bed time or plan on staying up very late! These books are very hard to put down.

I believe the next and last volume is due this October so I shouldn’t have to wait very long to get my hands on it but I’m kind of not wanting the series to end. I know some thing has to change and the war with the Hocklyns and AIs can’t last forever but I sure have made a lot of friends in these books and I will miss them when it’s over.

I know you’ll have the same experience when you get into this series. It is very, very good.

From My Book Review Number 132:

This review is on The Slaver Wars: Galactic Conflict, which is Book 6 of The Slaver Wars series by Raymond L. Weil.

This book starts with four hundred reptilian Hocklyn Federation warships and four Master AI ships waiting for even more warships to attack Rear Admiral Jeremy Strong’s Human Federation warships guarding the Carethian System. The Human Federation warships are greatly outnumbered and hope for reinforcements to help them before it is too late.

The battle for Careth is intense and defeat is almost certain but Admiral Strong is a brilliant commander and finds a way to save his fleet and Careth from the repeated Hocklyn attacks.

More detail is given in this story on the Hocklyn War leadership and its relationship with the Master AIs supporting them. The Hocklyn have a great empire and want to completely destroy the Human Federation, but they need the Master AIs to back them up.

The Human Federation is supported by the Alton race who gives them superior weapons and ships to fight the Hocklyn and the AIs. The tide of war begins to turn in Human favor.

Everything comes down to a final battle for Careth with the odds greatly in favor of the Hocklyn and AI attackers. If the Human Federation loses, all Human and Federation worlds will be lost. To make matters worse the Master AIs are working on a new weapon that could destroy all life in the galaxy.

I give this book Four Stars because the story is full of non-stop action and concludes with a thrilling space battle. It is one of the most intense and best written space battle scenes I have read in Military Science Fiction stories. This story ends with the knowledge that the Human Federation must find and destroy the new doomsday weapon being built by the terrifying Master AIs at the center of the galaxy. I look forward to reading the next and possibly final Book 7, which may end this exciting series.

Keep reading good science fiction and let me know when you find an interesting novel or author.

I truly wanted to rate this book (and it's siblings) higher as I really liked the premise, the setting, the tech, the science, and the overall story. Unfortunately, I could not give those extra stars because, as many reviewers have already noted, the writing could use some considerable work. I was hoping that as I made my way through the stories and novels the writing would improve. It did get better, but only marginally.

I appreciate the time and effort the author clearly puts into his books and I cross my fingers that the writing itself takes a leap forward. I do intend to purchase any further books in this series, I'll just have to grit my teeth and prepare to suffer through the presentation.

Doesn't disappoint!

Not quite as good as the previous book... But pretty darn good. The story flows fast and furious and by now we've gotten to the point where we can pretty much predict the outcomes of the various battles. It'll be nice to see how it turns out.

The Albanians, or Alton as they were known centuries ago, had jumped in to save the Federation’s bacon in the battle against the alien AI and the Hocklyn. The long lost history was brought to light by the Alton Ambassador on the Federation home planet and the Albanian Fleet Commander after the battle. The Alton was the people who originally created the AI to help with labor and manufacturing duties. As the people became more complacent the AI became smarter. As time went on it became obvious that the people had made serious mistakes. By the time the Alton tried to stop the AI it was too late and the AI turned against them. What Alton managed to escape remained hidden in underground cities. Contrary to prior behavior the Albanians err…Alton now shared their advanced science with the Federation so that they could continue the war against the AI and Hocklyn. We return to system Careth, the bears, and Rear Admiral Strong. Since being left to help protect the bears Strong was cut off from the Federation and was unaware of any happenings in the past six months. His mission was to protect the Carethians until Admiral Streth returned with a relief fleet. The Hocklyns were not sitting idle though. They had prepared a sizable fleet and were getting ready to attack the Careth space station. The upgrades provided by the Alton were a huge boon to the Federation. The new fusion reactor not only improved the ships jump capability, shields, and beam weapons, but virtually anywhere power was used. The anti-matter warheads increased the missile damage exponentially. For the first time in a long time the alien AI were worried. They knew who the Alton were and their capabilities. The alien AI immediately began to upgrade their shields and weapons. They also informed the Hocklyn staff about the Alton and upgraded their ships as well. The Alton also came up with a few more defensive surprises for the Federation; these additions were well received and appreciated. It was finally time to put pressure on the Hocklyn and take the battle to them!

Reasonably written sci-fi thriller. Plot is very predictable at times. Characters are well presented. The author develops the characters so that their feelings, desires, fears, ambitions, and futures become important to you. This is a 7 book series that hooks you from the first book with many unexpected plot twists and suspense. The series becomes less suspense and more filler at times after book 1. This is a series that I feel must be read from Book 1 in order to allow the plot, characters, and the "big picture" to make the most sense and greatly increase your reading pleasure!
