In Dare Gentry's mind, one female was as good as another. A fact he often pointed out to his Hellion brothers. He didn't believe in love, relationships and definitely wasn't into being a part of a couple. Loose, free and easy is how Dare liked his play.
That was until Ryley Daniels blows back into town ten years after they'd first met. And reignites feelings Dare's scarred heart never wanted to remember but couldn't seem to forget.
From the author of Hiding in Plain Sight, The Possibility of Trey and Reinventing Mel, comes the third novel in the Hellion MC Series.
Sometimes love can survive...distances, time and even the objections of your own heart.
My heart was beating so freaking fast. I could hear the murmurings of the crowd behind the curtain where I was hiding, that separated me from them. It was time. Time for me to come out and talk with them, those people from Goodreads that had read my books, rated my books and that wanted to know the person behind the words. I stepped my way carefully out onto the stage, my heartbeat the only sound my ears could hear. "Hi," I mumbled into the microphone. "My name is Judy and I write as J.A. Hornbuckle." Damn. My voice sounded as hesitant as I felt. "Tha-thank you so much for your interest." I was fumbling. But, I'd done this before. The public speaking thingie. And I really hadn't ever been this nervous before. But, geesh, I'd had notes then. Not now. Deep breath, my mind instructed. Okay, that I could do. "I, ah, I don't know what to…uhm, I'm uncertain what I'm supposed to talk about," I began. The fact that I couldn't see into the crowd was a problem. Talking to crowds is supposed to be like talking to other people. But I couldn't actually SEE the other people. Crap. Just start at the beginning. "I started writing because of a migraine," I started, my voice reedy and thin even in the amplification of the microphone. "I'd read three crap books in a row and thought I could do better." I cleared my throat which I hadn't realized beforehand would be captured by the speakers. "Sorry," I mumbled and tried again. "I read three books that convinced me that I could write better. I'm an avid reader. A voracious reader that consumed four to six fiction books a week. Three books, three crap books, meant that I had wasted fifty percent of my reading time. And I knew that I could do better, could write better." The noise in the large room lessened as I spoke and I gained courage from that silence. "As I laid on the floor of my walk-in closet because it, of all the rooms in my apartment, had no noise, no light, and with my frozen pack of corn on my head, thought of the book I might write." I remembered that time of pain. Of hurting so bad that my stomach would roil, where every heartbeat was torture and I couldn't breathe without the air hurting my teeth. "I started to think about Caitlin and Jake, about what was to become 'Pole Dance', and eventually I found that I could shove that pain to one side as I planned. I learned to stash a steno pad and pen in there with me and use my baby finger to hold the end of the steno pad and write in the dark." I heard a couple of chuckles which made me bolder. "I tried to capture the story on my computer in my 'dull roar' times. And, in a word? It was crap. I didn't know what I was doing. So I started to study. Read, absorbed. But you know what I found? Writing is like driving a car. You can read about driving, learning the rules of the road, reading about safety tips and precautions. But until you are actually behind the wheel? Oh, baby. Completely different story." More laughs this time. My knees were steadier and I felt my voice strengthen. I needed to finish up. "My name is Judy. And I'm a new author who is learning by the seat of her yoga pants as she goes. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing my books. You mean a lot to me." I smiled and waved into the glare that was hiding the group that had come to hear me speak. Because I've never spoken so much and with such honesty from my heart at one time.
This book was a bit different than the previous books of the Hellion MC series, it had more drama and issues than a real climax, and they didn't have an action climax where the heroine gets physically hurt like the previous one, here it's all about the emotions and bond.
Dare was a likable and funny character since the beginning, I liked how bold and jovial he was, and when he turned solemn it shows how his missing smile and laugh affected his brothers, In here his attraction to the heroine wasn't something new, it looked like it was the kind that went soul deep, they had instantly hit it off pretty intense when they were teen, but now they couldn't and wouldn't lower the degree of their want even a bit, I liked how he was all about his brothers and the club, how they gave him marital advice, how he used his observations about the couples to help him with his woman.
I don't have much to say about the heroine except I know how she feels about the frustration and suffocation from her family's over protectiveness and overbearing dictatorship. and I sympathize with her because her dad is an asshole, her ex *phew* fiancee is an asshole.
I loved the relationship between the main couple, they were so cute and obviously so in love, I liked how they confessed to each other, weather about their pain, their memories or their love, it was all sweet.
I liked how Trey was so into the big brother role for Dare, because his true brother was an asshole (many assholes are in this book this series, and our Hellions are only the best XD)
The character, Dare, has intrigued me since I read the first book in this series. Dare was always the joker of the group and always happy. He came across as your typical biker man-ho who shied away from any meaningful relationship. I really enjoyed reading his story and seeing the past life experiences that made Dare the person he was. The author weaves a story of first time young love that withstood the test of time. The second chance for Dare and Rylie was very touching. Dare’s background, as a child, was heart breaking and Rylie certainly came from a dysfunctional background. But their love held true throughout the years. Ryle’s father was determined to keep them apart but at times he was OTT and the only reason I could surmise was that he hated Dare for hurting his daughter. This book, as well as the others in the series, is full of quick wit displayed by hot, alpha guys and their one liners often made me LOL. I can’t wait for Silo’s story. He is one of the funniest characters in the series and fights hard against any committed relationship. I felt like the reunion with his brother, Jim, was glossed over and would love to have read more about that, but I’m feeling maybe another book about Jim is coming. At least I hope so. I highly recommend this book for those of you that love a good biker read with a strong h and a hot, alpha guy who also shows his softer side.
4 1/2 stars. This is not what I expected from Dare's story--but I liked it. It's probably my favorite of the series, since I felt it had a much better actual love story (and I didn't feel like beating the H over the head at times). Dare's character always seemed to be the larger than life sort. I really wasn't expecting sweet from him. Ryley was a good combination of though biker chick, and smart, caring heroine. I felt the story as a whole had a really tender romance, with good characters, and a side of biker life. (I realize it's not "realistic" biker--more on the fluffy side, but it was nice to read something lighter). There wasn't much conflict between the H and h--which I was expecting. More conflict happens with the main characters, and the h's family. Secondary characters from previous books are a good fit. There is a good background foundation given, and I don't really think it's necessary to read previous books to understand this one. I also enjoyed the writing style more with this one. I felt the dialogues felt more realistic, and not so over-the-top tough guy like before. I was pleasantly surprised.
Dare was such a man-whore in the first two books that I was kind of reluctant to read a story about him falling in love - just because I wasn't sure I'd be able to believe it. But I did! In fact, this particular love story seemed to explain his behaviour pretty well. I also ended up really liking Ryley - besides the whole letting her father control her bit. That didn't ring true for her in my opinion. I get that it was needed plot-wise, but really she didn't strike me as that chick. I really liked them separately - but I like them even more together.
The story was also pretty good. Despite the inherent violence in a series like this, there really wasn't much of that in this story. It was a simple reunion with the occasional fight thrown in. Overall, it was a sweet story.
I love this book series it just keeps getting better and better I am really looking forward to Silo's book next I can't wait for that one also I would love for Rinse to have his own book as I think the kid is hilarious ... :) his lecture about how to do laundry when he was talking to his sister was epic to say the least I loved it I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes and a cramp in my side ... :) I hope there are a lot more books in the series I would also enjoy hearing the full Story with Lock and her loud lover boy who has now jumped charters to be closer to her ... kind of awesome everybody is just moving to town in this book LOVE Love love it ... I can't wait for more ... :)
Dare when he was younger had a week with Ryley.. Ryley was from a different chapter and plus the president daughter .. When she left she left with a hole in heart and in Dare heart .. Years go by and she is back at his chapter .. Can Dare and Ryley find love ?? I enjoyed it .Was a great addition
Dare's a dick... But Dare can melt your heart. And he will be giving you one hell of roller coaster ride in the emotions department in this book. I am curious about a character that could have a spin-off potential, Jim Gentry.... I wanna hear his story for some reason.
So I've read the series and have loved them all!! Each story loved more than the last and "Taking A Dare" is my favorite!! Ready for Silo's story then we can move to Bishop's then we've gotta revisit Rinse & Derek....
