Start a bedtime Bible story tradition with your little ones tonight! Young children thrive on routine and rituals, and a Bible story at bedtime is one of the best routines to establish! A combination Bible storybook and book of prayers, Words to Dream On is the perfect bedtime storybook for young children, with a “once upon a time” voice that is also true to God’s Word. Over 50 stories—from the Old and New Testaments—create an overview of the entire story arc of the Bible. Stories are selected and retold for young children with a focus on God’s love, care, protection, trustworthiness, and power. Each story includes an engaging title, a Bedtime Blessing (a short summary thought), Words to Dream On (a brief Bible verse), and a Sleepy-Time Prayer (a good-night prayer tied to the theme of the story). The book also includes a short letter to parents that includes tested ideas for establishing a good bedtime routine with young children and tips for reading aloud to children at bedtime. Amazing bedtime book. 52 short (3-4 page) stories, each with Scripture ("Words to Dream On"), the Bible story, a "Bedtime Blessing" (ex: "God is with you everywhere you go."), and a Sleepy-time Prayer. The illustrations are FANTASTIC! My 2 year old & 5 year old both love it. I plan to look into her other books!
Words to Dream On: Bedtime Stories and Prayers is a wonderful children's book filled with over 50 stories of the Bible, including the Old and New Testament. Each story has a bedtime blessing, a verse to dream on, and a good night prayer. The beginning and the end of the book also comes with some ideas and tips on reading to your child and bedtime routines. This is a children's book but the writing and beautiful illustrations make it a perfect book to enjoy with your child or grandchild!
If your kids are anything like mine, they will think of anything to try to stay awake and not go to bed! One of our favorite bedtime routines is to read a story and then say a prayer. This book has an awesome concept because it combines not only those two things, but also throws in a Biblical verse to know and a Bedtime blessing! My sons who are three and five years old, very much enjoyed hearing their favorite Bible stories before going to sleep. The author picked each of the stories to show "God's loving care and His trustworthiness, power and protection." I could not think of a better way to go sleep than to be reminded of that, and I would definitely recommend this book as a must have on your child's bookshelf!
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher through BookLook Bloggers for an honest review.
I fell in love with the illustrations and just had to find more with the author/illustrator combo. This sweet book has been great to read with the kids every night before bed. I love the emphasis on scripture, the bed time blessing and the prayer. It is relatably written for kids but also encouraged me at the end of the day, when I was tucking them in exhausted after a full day of mothering, I was thankful to have this wonderful devotion.
When our new book first arrived I was instantly caught by the beautiful illustrations throughout the book and it's front cover. I love that the pictures reflect the story to help our son engage the story as we still work to help him gain some verbal skills. Pictures can sometimes be overlooked for importance but as I watch our son engage visually I'm beginning to realize how crucial a strong image can be for our little man.
The second thing I noticed was the binding. Some books you pick up and they go straight on the shelf, they're the type that extra care is required. Words to Dream On, however, has a nice thick cover and binding which I had no problem handing over to my 21 month old to explore and begin discovering right out of the box! I love that this will easily be around for many years of bedtime stories.
The third thing we all noticed were the stories. After years of volunteering and a Bible College degree I often get annoyed by children's stories that paraphrase and "dumb down" to the point that you're left with only moral thoughts and nice feelings (yes, sadly they exist). On the other hand, I'm equally discouraged by children's stories that are so long a child loses interest (training up a child I'm convinced also includes attention spans). Stortz offers a perfect compromise though with a 3-4 page average story that includes pictures, a bedtime prayer, the actual scripture reference (so mom and dad or older siblings can follow along at their own level afterwards) and a short blessing to tie things together. While the stories themselves are somewhat paraphrased, they've been true to the story and child accessible to the point that when #2 arrives this summer I know that the age gap won't be an issue for both of them enjoying this book for at least a few years.
Finally, I really appreciated the order of this book. Chronological in nature, families can choose to read through in order building upon the narrative and seeing how God's story unfolds over time or families can use the handy index to find stories that more closely connect to real life or family devotionals that may already be underway.
Finding a good collection of Bible stories can be difficult in today's market but if you're looking for a book that is durable, engaging, and will appeal to multiple family members I highly recommend giving Words to Dream On a second look!

If I could give a book 10 stars, it would be this one! The beautiful illustrations complement many wonderful Bible stories perfectly. The author has brought a fresh approach to Bible reading. Each page gives lots of opportunities for children to engage with their parents. My grandson is 7 and could easily read the stories aloud. I was delighted to see him want to discuss the exciting adventures found within the pages of the gorgeous hardcover book. What I found so complete and comforting is that you'll find the Bedtime Blessing, along with the Sleepy-Time Prayer, a perfect way to end your bedtime routine with your precious little ones. Pouring God's love into their hearts and minds is a marvelous legacy for anyone, especially grandparents. My family loves the book and I highly recommend to friends.
I wanted a nice Bible story book to read at bedtime and found this at Mardel for $5. We love it. My daughters are 5 and 6 and have Autism so I appreciated that each story is kept to four pages total. Each story has a Bible verse, a thought and a prayer, making it perfect for bedtime. I loved the Bible stories that were selected. I also had no issues with the theology. The whole book was set up to tell the story of salvation: How we sinned, the years where God promised to send a Savior and orchestrated events to ensure the Savior would come, Jesus finally comes, dies, rises, ascends and will come again.
We will be reading this book from the beginning again now that we have finished it. I bought one for my granddaughter too.
When searching for titles to add to our home library we take both the quality and content of the books into consideration. Words to Dream On Bedtime Bible Stories and Prayers by Diane Stortz meets and exceeds our high standards. The beauty of this book extends well beyond the cover - the stories, Sleepy-time Prayers, Bedtime Blessings, and amazingly rich illustrations made this book an instant favorite in our home.
This little book is adorable. The author wrote these short stories in a lovely style and the illustrations really complement the text. This book makes an ideal snuggly bedtime read for your little ones!
