'Daddies' has illustrations by Tibor Gergely and is excellent. 'We Help Daddy' has the kind of illustrations where the children look as if their cheeks are stuffed with dental cotton wool and smeared with strawberry jam. We see far too much of the girl's knickers but then I have nightmares about failing underwear elastic and had to avert my eyes. And that brings me to the third story, 'Animal Daddies and My Daddy'. It would have bothered me less were it not for the fact that after 50 years the myth of father-child bonds in the animal world is still with us. No, Lion Daddy wouldn't do anything to save his cub and Brown Bear Daddy doesn't show his cub how to catch fish. Harrumph.
