For them there is no such thing as the impossible, nothing is improbable; fairyland is a constant quantity and the supernatural quite familiar. The old rampart, logic; the old wall, reason; the old main stay of thought, good sense, break down, fall and crumble before their imagination, set free and escaped into the limitless realm of fancy, and advancing with fabulous bounds, and nothing can check it.

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.

The author-narrator begins with the remark that the subject of mental illness had always attracted him, and illustrates this with an account of a visit he had made to an institution for the mentally ill where he had participated in an interview with a certain Madame Hermet, who had always been excessively attentive to her beauty and was now absolutely convinced that she had marks all over her face and could not be persuaded otherwise. After the interview the institution’s doctor had told the narrator about the family event that had caused her relapse into such a profound state of mental imbalance when she refused to visit her dying son for fear of contracting smallpox and losing her beauty. After her son's death, she became insane, believing her face was disfigured

Guy de Maupassant's "Madame Hermet" is a short story of a very vain woman who cared more for her beauty than her own son. This is also a story of insanity.

Her beauty is everything and as she ages she is all consumed with this even in the asylum where she was taken after son's death and not seeing him because she was afraid of her beauty being taken away. He understood but thinks she can say goodbye outside his window and even this is too much for her. He dies broken hearted. She goes crazy. What is her beauty now being alone in an asylum? As I grow older I see the difference and though it is disappointing it is what it is approaching death and a need to be dignified.

This is one of the earliest demontrations I know of the 'female gaze' finding out about the 'male gaze'. In other words, the son, under normal conditions, thinks he should always and unconditionaly love his mommy. Now, mommy don't usually have a say about what she actually does, think or feel either about her son or anyone else.
