Dietrich Bonhoeffer was imprisoned by the Gestapo in April 1943 and murdered two years later at the age of 39. These meditations--selected from his own writings and homilies--reflect on that deepest meaning of Christmas that can shine through even the darkest moments of life. The text and color artwork invite readers to share Bonhoeffer's deep faith in the reality of Christmas, no matter what our circumstances.
Works of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Protestant theologian of Germany, concern Christianity in the modern world; for his role in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, people executed him.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer served as a Lutheran pastor. He, also a participant in the movement of Resistance against Nazism and a member, founded the confessing church. Members of the Abwehr, the military intelligence office planned his involvement, which resulted in his arrest in April 1943 and his subsequent hanging in April 1945 shortly before the end of the war. His secular view influenced very many people.
We'd been searching for books and movies that would make this season feel like Christmas. After a few warm fuzzy ones failed that test, and after thinking longer about the real reason for Christmas, I thought I'd try some more serious books. This one was much smaller than I'd anticipated. Though the words may be few, the thoughts expressed by them could be pondered for hours. It's well worth reading, and I think it's one that would not wear thin with many re-readings. It's not a warm fuzzy, but as you ponder these meditations on Christmas, you discover that these thoughts are the deep, eternal blaze that ignites all the warm hints of good we see everywhere else. The artwork included is all quality... some worth studying though quite a few are woefully inaccurate to the biblical account.
